----

A rival (Japanese: ライバル rival) is one of the main characters in the Pokémon games that is well known to the protagonist and has similar skills, goals and achievements. Rival characters appear frequently during the hero's quest, having a role in several of the games' events, and often challenges him or her in battles. Defeating a rival may be a primary or necessary goal of said character.

In the games
In the main series, a rival is a recurring opponent to the player throughout the game. This class of characters has appeared beginning in Generation I, and in every main series game since. Typically, rivals will be met by the player early in the game, usually around the time the player receives their starter Pokémon. In most games, the rival will also obtain a starter Pokémon, and will usually participate in the player's first Pokémon battle against a Trainer. From then on, rivals will appear frequently throughout the player's journey, always being one step ahead of the player as the player moves through the region, meeting and battling the player at various points in the game with a progressively stronger and diversified party. Usually they must be defeated in order to continue the game; the most important of these battles happening either right before or during the player's challenge to the Elite Four. After the defeat of the Elite Four and the Pokémon Champion, the rival can usually be battled at the player's leisure, but only at certain times with increasingly powerful Pokémon. More often than not, they will have the starter Pokémon of their home region that weakens the one the player chose at the beginning of the game, though Wally, Bianca, and Blue in Yellow are exceptions.

The antagonism and importance of the rival character has decreased with time. In Generations I and II, the player's rival was depicted as rude, egomaniacal, or even criminal. These rivals often challenged the player late into the game, with their utilitarian philosophy of raising Pokémon contrasting the player's supposed heartfelt, compassionate approach. In Generation III and onwards, the negativity of the rival was toned down, starting with Brendan and May, who are depicted as friendly and helpful. Consequently, the rival no longer challenged the player as late into the game, with that climactic role being assumed by villainous teams.

The following are the characters considered to be rivals in the games. It should be noted, though, that only Blue and Silver have ever received the Rival trainer class; all others have been referred to as Pokémon Trainers. Additionally, for one battle in FireRed and LeafGreen, Blue is referred to as "Champion Blue".
Various rivals for the main characters have also appeared in the anime.
*Ash has had Gary Oak, Paul, Barry, and Trip as his major rivals. Minor rivals include Nando and Conway, who, while they battled Ash more than once across an entire saga, have a smaller role than the other four. Many other characters also collect badges and may be counted as rivals in the future.
*May has Drew, Harley, and Solidad.
*Dawn has Zoey, Kenny, Ursula, and Jessilina. A minor rival included Nando.
*Johanna had a childhood rivalry with Lila.
*Brock had a friendly (and short-lived) rivalry with Suzy.
*Jessie and James have a rivalry with Cassidy and Butch, respectively.
In the manga
In the Pokémon Adventures manga
section
In Pokémon Adventures, Red's first rivalry blossomed when, just as their game counterparts did, he and Blue were each given the first two Pokédex, as well as starter Pokémon to compliment their already growing parties (somewhat unlike in the games). Red received Bulbasaur, while Blue acquired the starter that weakens his, and both times his Charmander evolved before Red's. As would become a tradition in the manga, Green, hearing of these two fellow Pallet Town Trainers' big send offs on journeys, stole a Squirtle (weakened by Red's) and proved to be a somewhat irritating obstacle for Red at times, stealing two of his badges and shrewdly taking his Moon Stone for later use before using the boy as a pawn to gather the seven known badges at the time to create Zapmolcuno (not knowing at the time that it would create a three-headed bird monster, a kind which she fears above all else). She also competed in the Pokémon League after Red's excursions in the Viridian Gym against Giovanni, as well as his capture of Mewtwo. She finally faced the then-disguised Professor in the semi-finals, but after her phobia of bird Pokémon was exploited, she lost, and after Oak's forfeit, Red defeated his rival in the final match.

Yellow, who took over as the protagonist two years later, had no real rival, but as both she and Lance of the Elite Four had the psychic healing powers of Viridian Forest, he would most closely match this description.

One year later, the tradition of the rival character acquiring a starter that weakens the protagonist's would again be revisited when Silver steals his Totodile while Gold took a Cyndaquil. Once again, the rival would evolve his starter before the boy when his Totodile became a Croconaw before Gold's evolved to Quilava, but after they were horribly defeated and narrowly saved by Entei, they would fall into a coma lasting for several weeks, during which a third protagonist, Crystal, is given a Chikorita, the last remaining starter (along with the final Pokédex), and it too evolved to a Bayleef. The three then were reunited in the Whirl Islands, and evolved to the final stages simultaneously.

Years after the Masked Man's defeat, Ruby and Sapphire would be given opposite starters, but unlike before (possibly attributed to the fact that Sapphire is female), Ruby would now acquire a Mudkip and Sapphire would be given the disadvantaged Torchic. Both evolved to their final stage similarly, though again the rival of the main playable character, Ruby, would evolve hers first both times.

Ironically, Treecko would again meet the fate of being partnered after its chums when it at last becomes Grovyle with Wally, and is revealed to have been smuggled into the Battle Factory after evolving to its final stage in the wild. As originally intended, it ended up with Emerald.

The protagonists for the Diamond & Pearl received the same type starters as the RGB seniors years before, when Diamond (based on Lucas) ended up with a Turtwig, Pearl (based on the rival character) with a Chimchar, and Platinum (based on Dawn) was given a Piplup. However, unlike the first protagonists, their starters evolved almost exactly at the same time, with Diamond and Pearl's starters evolving simultaneously both times.

Trivia
* Ash has at least one species of Pokémon each of his major rivals own. Gary captured a Krabby, Paul uses a Torterra and Gliscor, Barry uses a Staraptor and Heracross, and Trip uses a Janovy.
* Ash also has at least one species of Pokémon that some of his minor rivals own. Ritchie owns a Pikachu, Charmeleon and a Taillow while Morrison owns a Gligar and Tyson owns a Sceptile and a Donphan.
* Almost all of the rivals in the games are from the protagonist's hometown. Only Silver and Wally come from other places, with Silver's hometown being unknown and Wally hailing from Petalburg City.

Archer (Japanese: アポロ Apollo) is one of the four Team Rocket Executives introduced in Gold and Silver. However, he went unnamed until HeartGold and SoulSilver.

In the games
At first, Archer seems to make an appearance in FireRed and LeafGreen, as an unnamed male Team Rocket Admin in the Rocket Warehouse on Five Island. He is the leader of the Sevii Islands branch of Team Rocket, and accuses the player of spreading rumors that Team Rocket has disbanded, something he does not believe. When the player defeats the him, he recognizes the Earth and accepts that Giovanni has been defeated, finally disbanding Team Rocket, but he vows to find him and resurrect Team Rocket someday. The computer he was working on mentions the effect of radio waves on Pokémon evolution, foreshadowing Team Rocket's actions three years later.

Three years later, Archer is the interim head of Team Rocket during the absence of Giovanni. He leads the team in its takeover of the Goldenrod Radio Tower, aiming to locate his missing leader and bring him back to the team.

Just like other Executives, Archer received a major overhaul in HeartGold and SoulSilver, where his identity was expanded on. In addition, his color scheme was noticeably switched, where he now wears white clothes on the topmost layer, as opposed to the traditional black outfit.
In the Pokémon Adventures manga
Archer appears in the HeartGold & SoulSilver of the Pokémon Adventures manga alongside the other three executives. They appear at the end of the first round to take over control of Team Rocket from Carr, saying that they will stay true to Giovanni's intentions.

Trivia
* Archer's design in Generation IV is based upon the original sprite of all male Rocket Executives from Generation II. The other two male Executives (now known as Proton and Petrel), who also used that sprite, were given entirely new designs. Similarly, Ariana's design is based on the original female Executive sprite, being the only female Executive in Johto.
* Before Archer's name and identity were revealed in Generation IV, Pokémon Adventures and Golden Boys had adapted the original male Executive as Carl and Grey, respectively. Having similar roles to Archer and owning a Houndour, they should be considered as his cross-canon counterparts.
* Considering Saturn is left the assets of Team Galactic in Cyrus's absence, Archer could be seen as his parallel, as he controls Team Rocket in Giovanni's absence.
A Pokémon Trainer (Japanese: ポケモントレーナー Pokémon Trainer) is a person who caught, training, cares for and battles with Pokémon. The majority of people within the known Pokémon world are Trainers.

Background
Many Trainers leave home at about the age of ten, sometimes accompanied with a starter Pokémon obtained from a Pokémon professor, such as Oak. Many will travel around one or more regions, doing such things as gathering information for a Pokédex, perfecting their technique, collecting badges, and working to become a Pokémon master. No matter what their specialties or aims, there is one code that they all follow - when two Trainers make eye contact, they must have a battle.

Pokémon Trainers come in all sorts of classes: Youngsters tend to stay close to home, and Bug Catchers swarm about the Bug-filled forests; Hikers traverse mountains and caves, Fisherman are rarely far from water, and Ace Trainers aspire to compete in the Pokémon League. A Trainer's class may reflect their Pokémon of choice, the areas they prefer, their technique, and their level of skill; however, even among their classes, Trainers may vary greatly.

Many towns have a Gym run by a strong and experienced Trainer known as a Gym Leader. Other Trainers may challenge a Gym Leader, and if the Gym Leader is defeated in battle, he or she awards them a Pokémon League badge. However, in the Pokémon anime, the Gym Leader may award the Trainer a badge for other reasons, since the badge is a symbol of the Trainer's skill. For example, Ash Ketchum won several of his early badges by refusing to take an unfair advantage or going out of his way to save a gym, which proved himself as an exceptional Trainer outside of battle.

Above the level of Gym Leaders are the Elite Four Trainers and Pokémon League Champion. There are also a special class of Trainers known as the Frontier Brains, but they are unique to Emerald, Platinum, and HeartGold and SoulSilver and part of a privately owned institution known as the Battle Frontier, and so may not be recognized by the League. These Trainers are considered the cream of the crop, and can only be challenged if a Trainer has met requirements such as winning eight badges. Should a Trainer defeat other Trainers at this level, it is not uncommon for him or her to be offered a place in these high ranks.

However, just as there are many Trainers with noble goals and lawful methods, there are also corrupt Trainers, including a number of villainous teams. These Trainers often use powerful Pokémon to take what they want and further their plans.

Super Smash Bros. Brawl
Red (game)#In the Super Smash Bros. series
There is a playable character called "Pokémon Trainer" in the game Super Smash Bros. Brawl. His appearance is based on Red's Generation III design, and he uses SquirtleIvysaurCharizard of the evolution families of the Kanto starters to battle against the others.

As a Trainer class
In the games, Pokémon Trainer (rendered as "PKMN Trainer") is used as the Trainer class for certain storyline characters. These opponents tend to be the most powerful non-arena trainers the player will face, notably including the rivals of all generations; Red from Pokémon Gold and Silver, Crystal, and HeartGold and SoulSilver; and Steven from Pokémon Emerald. In link battles, all players have this Trainer class.

Trivia
* For Gettin' Twiggy With It!, Professor Oak's lecture is about the Pokémon Trainer. He writes this Pokémon senryū about it: さあ10さい　ぼくもわたしも　トレーナー Sā jussai, boku mo watashi mo torēnā. "Ah, the age 10; we will all be Trainers."
* Even though it is stated in the anime that a person may not become a Trainer until the age of 10, there are many Trainers in other media that are obviously below the minimum age, such as the Twins and the Tuber.
* In Generation I, opposing Trainers' AI would always choose a move whose type is super effective against the player's Pokémon, even if the move itself does no damage (using Mist, for example, on a Dragon-type Pokémon), until that move's PP ran out.
Generation I
Explosion does damage, and causes the user to faint. Though its power is 170, the opponent's
defense will be halved when damage from this attack is calculated, giving it an effective power
of 340. The game will bump 0 up to 1 to avoid infinite damage, so Explosion will then
effectively have a power of 170 if used against an opponent with a defense value of 1.

If Explosion breaks an opponent's substitute, the user will not faint, though its image will be
replaced by a blank image. Additionally, if the user of Explosion had a substitute at the time
of such a situation, uses Substitute later, or switches out, its regular image will once again
become visible.

If the user of Explosion attacks first and faints itself, the opponent will not attack or be
subjected to recurrent damage during that round.

In Stadium, if Explosion breaks an opponent's substitute, the user will faint.

Explosion has a power of 170 in Generation I.
Hyper Beam is a slightly inaccurate and very highly-damaging Normal-type move introduced in Generation I. It is often represented falsely as the most powerful move ever.

Effect
Generation I
Hyper Beam does damage. A recharge turn is required on the turn after damage is done, during
which no action may be performed.

Hyper Beam will not require a recharge turn if it misses, breaks a Substitute, or faints the
opponent, or if the user is targeted by a partial trapping move (even if it misses), flinches,
or is put to sleep after the attack but before the recharge turn. However, freeze does not
negate the recharge turn of Hyper Beam. If the user is confused, the recharge turn of Hyper
Beam will not count towards the number of turns the user will remain confused.

In a round where the opponent attacks before a user which must recharge, if the opponent uses a partial trapping move that misses, the user will automatically use Hyper Beam during that turn. If at such a time Hyper Beam has 0 PP, Hyper Beam will still be used, and afterwards its PP will roll over to 63, and full PP ups will be applied to it.

If a frozen Pokémon that has not recharged gets defrosted via Haze, it will remain unable to attack, switch, or do anything, and nothing (not even getting refrozen and then defrosted by a Fire move) will be able to change this.

In Stadium, Hyper Beam requires a recharge turn every time it is used.
: Its long tail serves as a ground to protect itself from its own high voltage power.
: When electricity builds up inside its body, it becomes feisty. It also glows in the dark.
; Pokémon Stadium
: Its electrical attacks may reach 10,000 volts. It discharges electricity from its tail, so it is not harmed by its own power.
; Pokémon Gold
: When its electricity builds, its muscles are stimulated, and it becomes more aggressive than usual.
; Pokémon Silver
: If the electric pouches in its cheeks become fully charged, both ears will stand straight up.
; Pokémon Crystal
: If its electric pouches run empty, it raises its tail to gather electricity from the atmosphere.
; Pokémon Ruby
: If the electrical sacks become excessively charged, Raichu plants its tail in the ground and discharges. Scorched patches of ground will be found near this Pokémon's nest.
; Pokémon Sapphire
: This Pokémon exudes a weak electrical charge from all over its body that makes it take on a slight glow in darkness. Raichu searches for electricity by planting its tail in the ground.
; Pokémon Emerald
: If it stores too much electricity, its behavior turns aggressive. To avoid this, it occasionally discharges excess energy and calms itself down.
; Pokémon FireRed
: Its electric charges can reach even 100,000 volts. Careless contact can cause even an Indian elephant to faint.
: A Pokémon that manipulates psychic power at will. It doesn't stop bouncing even when it is asleep. It loves eating mushrooms that grow underground.

Name origin
Spoink's name is possibly a combination of spring and oink, the sound a pig makes. Baneboo is probably derived from 発条 bane, spring, and ぶうぶう būbū, the sound of grumbling. The end of its name may also be a shortening of 豚 buta, pig.

It is possible the inspiration for Spoink came from the proverb "do not cast your pearls before swine, lest they trample them under your feet." The pearls were supposed to represent wisdom given to an audience who would not appreciate the teachings. Spoink and Grumpig appear to instead use those pearls of wisdom to enhance their mental powers. It is obviously based off a pig
Jigglypuff (Japanese: プリン Purin, German: Pummeluff, French: Rondoudou) is a Normal-type Pokémon. Jigglypuff is notable for its use of the move Sing, the sound of which can put most any trainer or Pokémon to sleep. This has frequently been used as a joke line in both the Anime and games, especially in Pokémon Yellow, in the Pewter City Pokémon Center. Jigglypuff evolves into Wigglytuff with the use of the Moon Stone.

: Nothing can avoid falling asleep hearing a Jigglypuff's song. The sound waves of its singing voice match the brain waves of someone in a deep sleep.

Name origin
Jigglypuff's name is a combination of jiggly and puff, referring to its wobbly shape and ability to inflate itself. Many people have been unable to decipher its Japanese name, but concede that it may simply be taken from the Japanese word for pudding, purin.
In the anime
From The Song of Jigglypuff through the end of the Johto series, a wild Jigglypuff followed Ash Ketchum's group, intent on performing its trademark song without causing its audience to fall asleep. It rarely if ever succeeded. Anything that fell asleep after hearing the song, that Jigglypuff would scribble all over the sleepers' faces. After Johto, Jigglypuff suddenly stopped appearing, but it did feature in one early Advanced Generation episode. This Jigglypuff was voiced by かないみか Mika Kanai in the Japanese version.

A green-eyed Jigglypuff was featured in AG138, who was voiced by 池田千草 Chigusa Ikeda.

Jigglypuff was featured in Super Smash Brothers as a secret character and in Super Smash Brothers Melee as a character available from the start.

Super Smash Brothers Melee is a fighting game for the Nintendo Gamecube and the sequel to the Nintendo 64 title Super Smash Brothers.

It pits your favourite Nintendo characters against each other in fast-paced combat.

Note: MS= a meteor smash under certain conditions. A meteor smash is a smash your opponent will have little chance of recovering against.

The info on this page is directly from the Nintendo Power guide. All attack names and character info were gathered from here.
Pokémon Characters
Super Smash Brothers Melee features four playable Pokémon characters: Pikachu, Jigglypuff, Pichu, and Mewtwo.

Pikachu
Pikachu is a very fast character and pretty easy to knock of the stage due to his lightweight. Here are his attacks as follows in Super Smash Brothers Melee:

*A: Headbutt
*A while Dashing: Running Headbutt
*Up+A: Tail Smack
*Left or Right+A: Pika Kick
*Down+A: Tail Sweep
*Smash Up+A: Tail Somersault
*Smash Left or Right+A: Thundershock
*Smash Down+A: Electric Flower
*A (in air): Pika Roll
*Up+A (in air): Tail Chop
*Foward+A (in air): Electric Drill
*Backward+A (in air): Glider
*Down+A (in air): Electric Screw
*B: Thunder Jolt-A ball of electricity will slinky across a level until it hits something or shorts out.
*Up+B: Quick Attack-Pikachu will teleport in the direction you want up to two times. This counts as a Fourth jump and pikachu will unable to do any moves until it grabs a ledge or falls onto solid ground.
*Down+B:-Thunder-An extremely short-range attack. A Thundercloud will strike a bolt strait down, hitting the highest platform on the stage. It will land from the spot of the execution of the move; if it hits Pikachu, it will splash-damage opponents around him as well.
*Side+B: Skull Bash-Pikachu will charge up and rocket sideways. Depending on how long you hold down the B button will make Pikachu fly farther and hit harder.
*Z or R+A: Grab
(after grab, while holding the opponent)
*A or Z: Electric Shock
*Forward: Electrocution
*Backward: Submission
*Up: Electric Skull
*Down: Electric Slam
*Taunt: "Pika-Pika!"-Pikachu waves at (or away from) you.

Pichu
Pichu's attacks are identical to Pikachu's, although Pichu damages itself while using electric themed attacks. Pichu is really fast, actually one of the fastest, but is also lighter and easier to send flying. Pichu's attacks are as follows in Super Smash Brothers Melee:

*A: Generic attack.
*Up+A:
*Side+A: Headbutt
*Down+A:
*B: Thundershock
*Up+B: Quick Attack-Same as Pikachu. Pichu can sustain up to two to three damage.
*Down+B: Thunder
*Side+B:
*Taunts: "Pichu!" Pichu does a happy wiggle on the floor.

Mewtwo
Mewtwo is surprisingly easy to send flying in the air and has a very delayed jump reaction. He is more of a technical character and a very good teammate when he is with Ganondorf, Capt. Falcon, or Ness.

*A: Dark Flash
*Rapidly tap A: Dark Flame
*A while Dashing: Dark Torch
*Up+A: Flip
*Side+A: Tail Whip
*Down+A: Tail Sweep
*Smash Up+A: Galaxy Force
*Smash Left or Right+A: Shadow Blast
*Smash Down+A: Shadow Bomb
*A (in air): Body Spark
*Up+A (in air): Somersault Kick
*Foward+A (in air): Shadow Scratch
*Backward+A (in air): Tail Flick
*Down+A (in air)(MS): Meteor Kick
*B: Shadow Ball - Mewtwo charges up ala Samus. If he is hit he will lose the charge. Hitting left or right while charging will "stock" the moves current charge and powers. Mewtwo's hand will emmit a dark aura when it is at full power. The move has an erratic flight path when shot and has recoil.
*Up+B: Teleport - Mewtwo teleports once in the direction of your choice. It can't go through thick floors, however, and the teleport transition is slow.
*Down+B: Disable - Short Range attack that temporary disables the opponent, rendering it unable to move. Aids in timing for a throw; also for releasing a charged Shadow Ball.
*Side+B: Confusion-Short Range. The opponent is turned around, causing damage.
*Taunt: "Hahaha!"-Mewtwo twirls around, laughing sinisterly.

Jigglypuff
*A: Generic Attack
*Up+A:
*Side+A:
*Down+A:
*B: Pound- A quick punch foward.
*Up+B: Sing (?)
*Side+B: Rollout
*Down+B: Rest Jigglypuff falls asleep and an opponent, if they are lined up correctly, will be sent flying.

Poké Ball Pokémon
One of the items your character is able to pick up in Super Smash Brothers Melee is the Poké Ball, with it you can summon numerous Pokémon that fight against your enemies. These pokémon and their effects in the game are listed below:

Venusaur

Similar to DK's Down + B attack, Venusaur causes an Earthquake around him that causes all characters touching the ground to go flying.

Charizard

Similar to the fire flower, this Pokémon uses the Flamethrower attack when released. He alternates between shooting it left and right.

Blastoise

This Pokémon uses the Hydro Pump attack when it comes out.

Clefairy

Uses Metronome to use the effects/attacks of a random Pokémon. It will copy either, Blizzard, Explosion, or Fire Spin

Electrode

Very similar to the bob-omb, Electrode uses Explosion after 3 seconds. You can throw him in the last second or so if you're quick enough.

Weezing

Emits gases and juggles and person that comes in close contact.

Chansey

Uses Softboiled to releases eggs that may contain additional items.

Goldeen

No effect, just flops around.

Staryu

Chases after the nearest opponent, then locks itself into position and shoots Swift.

Snorlax

Flies up into the air and descends over a large area of the screen using Body Slam. Any character who comes in contact with Snorlax in either direction is sent flying.

Articuno

Uses the Blizzard attack. Anyone in the attack range when Articuno unleases this attack will be frozen for a few seconds.

Zapdos

Uses the Thundershock attack. Anything in the attack range will be hit by several electrical surges, and sustain quite a bit of damage.

Moltres

Deals quite a bit of damage to anyone who comes in contact with it.

Mew

No effect, but earns bonus points in One Player and bonus modes.

Chikorita

When released, unleashes a Razor Leaf attack hitting anyone in its path.

Cyndaquil

Similar to Charizard, unleashes the Flamethrower attack, but only does so in one direction. It can be hit off the screen with a strong enough attack.

Togepi

Has several attacks that are randomly selected with Metrenome, all with different effects. The screen can black-out due to Night Shade, opponents can be driven into the ground by Magnitude, fall asleep due to Sing, or end up with Leech Seed

Bellossom

Puts any nearby characters into a deep sleep while it is visible.

Marill

Runs across the stage, juggling any opponents briefly.

Unown

Flies across the screen, returning with a large swarm of Unown moving in a random direction. Any character caught in the storm is damaged and juggled.

Wobbuffet

Uses Counter, damaging anything that hits it. This is the only Pokémon that will damage the character who releases it.

Scizor

Similar to Maril's tackle, except it flies around the screen and causes a lot more damage.

Porygon2

Uses a powerful Tackle attack. When it connects, it sends characters flying.

Raikou

Uses a Spark attack, electrocuting anything that gets caught up.

Entei

Fire Spin attack, trapping anyone who lands in it and dealing a lot of damage.

Suicune

Uses a Blizzard of icy wind, causing high levels of damage.

Lugia

A rare find, it flies up and then lands in the background, shooting large gusts of wind using Aeroblast.

Ho-oh

Unleashes a spiral of Sacred Fire, dealing a ton of damage to anyone caught in the blast.

Celebi

Like Mew, doesn't affect the battle, but adds bonus points where applicable. The first time you see it, you get a trophy for it.

Nintendo released several custom products including a Pikachu N64 which came in two colours (blue and orange). It had several customisations such as a Poké Ball for the on button and Pikachu's foot for the reset button.

N64 Myths
It is popular belief that the Nintedo 64 was the first 64 bit console, the first console with four controllers and the first console to use an analog stick. This however, is not true. The first game console to bill itself as "64-bit" was actually the Atari Jaguar. The first console to use an analog stick was the Emerson Arcadia. And the first to feature four controller ports was the Bally Astrocade.

I've noticed that people have been saying both "moves" and "attacks" when refering to Pokémon attacks, what are we sticking with? I say attacks, I think that's the official name for them. Once we decide Bulbapedia:Manual_of_style should probably mention it. - Ferret 22:34, 27 Feb 2005 (UTC)

I think the actual name for moves is technique, but I referrenced move in one article, because that's how they are in the wiki... for example, I think there's a "Hydro Cannon (move)" article. -GreenGiant

I just checked my Silver and Sapphire English booklets (the ones that come with the game). They both use "Move" to refer to the attacks. To add to it, using "Move" keeps consistent with any place that may use the term "Moveset". --Meowth346 20:52, 28 Feb 2005 (UTC)

R/B manual calls them both abilities and techniques. Fr/Lg manual says moves. The G/S manual calls them MOVEs. Okay I give up, we'll call them moves.... - Ferret 05:14, 1 Mar 2005 (UTC)
Trainers need to collect a certain number of Gym Badges in order to qualify for a region's Pokémon League. Young trainers usually begin their initial Pokémon journey by travelling from city to city in order to collect them. Badges are small enough to fit easily between one's thumb and index finger, and can be pinned to a shirt.

In the Anime
The Anime has a few different rules for Badges than in the games. Primarily, Badges seem to do nothing beside signify the defeat of a given Gym Leader. A Pokémon may choose not to obey its Trainer even if he or she has gained all eight Badges, such as Ash's Charizard.

Gym Leaders are quite lenient about giving out Badges in the Anime. Additionally, Trainers do not necessarily have to win a battle with the Gym Leader in order to earn a Badge. The Orange Crew, for example, all have entire Gym matches devoted to unconventional battling styles and Ash Ketchum was awarded several Badges because of his kind heart and determination.

Gary Oak acquired more than the standard eight Kanto League Badges, thus leading to confusion as to whether or not there is a finite number of Badges that can be given out in a given region.

Moving up a grade in Pokémon Tech is the equivalent of winning two Gym Badges. Upon graduation, students may immediately apply for entry in the Pokémon League.

Trainers can take a three-part test that awards a single Badge which allows entry into the Pokémon League.

In the Pokémon Special manga
In Pokémon Special, Badges have mystical and mysterious qualities that can somehow increase the power of the Pokémon owned by the Trainer who wields the Badges.

It is not known what sort of material Badges are made of, but they have been used for other purposes. The Mask of Ice, for instance - made an armored mask out of crushed Badges.

Team Rocket also used the eight Kanto Gym Badges to power a machine that combined three different Legendary Pokémon into a single beast.

Badges are not required to enter the Pokémon League tournament, however without eight Badges, a trainer must battle their way in to qualify for the finals.

In the Electric Tale of Pikachu manga
In the Electric Tale of Pikachu, Badges work in a way similar to the anime, however, there are some minor differences. All Badges have the Pokémon League logo printed on them.

In addition, Pokémon Trainers are organized by class, much like Pokémon Tech "Class D", "Class C" and so forth. Badges increase the the rank of the trainer who owns them. Ash once believed that he could increase his rank by capturing rare wild Pokémon, however this was not the case.
