A new day dawns. Ash and Pikachu are on the top of a hill. The camera lowers and the Pokémon D/P logo appears.

[[Ash Ketchum|Ash]], [[Ash's Pikachu|Pikachu]], [[Brock]] and [[Dawn (anime)|Dawn]] are on the top of a tree while {{t|flying}} Pokémon, like {{p|Altaria}}, {{p|Fearow}} and {{p|Murkrow}}, along with non-flying types like {{p|Misdreavus}} are flying in the background. A {{p|Chatot}} flies near the camera.

On a tree's branches, three {{p|Cherrim}}, a {{p|Kricketot}}, a {{p|Pachirisu}}, a {{p|Burmy}} and a {{p|Budew}} are dancing with happy faces.

Ash and [[Ash's friends|his friends]] are chasing a {{p|Glameow}} in a city. The Glameow runs towards an alley.

Then, they are crossing a {{p|Bibarel}}'s [[wp:Dam|dam]] and exploring a dark cave, where they find a {{p|Drapion}}.

Hoenn designer [[Jun'ichi Masuda]] has explicitly confirmed that Hoenn is modelled after [[wp:Kyushu|Kyushu]], the fourth of the main islands of Japan, in the 15th article in his [http://www.gamefreak.co.jp/COLUMN/column002.html Director's column].

Masuda's parents were both born in [[wp:Kurate District, Fukuoka|Kurate District]], [[wp:Fukuoka Prefecture|Fukuoka Prefecture]], and so he has many relatives in Kyushu. When he was young, he went to Kyushu for his summer vacations. The happy memories he had of Kyushu eventually led him to choose Kyushu as the stage for [[Pokémon Ruby and Sapphire|Pokémon Ruby, Sapphire]] and [[Pokémon Emerald|Emerald]].

As with Kyushu, Hoenn (a pun on 豊縁 ''hōen'') is a place where the relations (縁 ''en'') between Pokémon and people, between person and person, are abundant (豊 ''hō'').

When the main character is moving to Hoenn in Ruby, Sapphire, or Emerald, they are driving in a moving van. It is later revealed that their family is originally from Johto. It is unknown how they took a moving van, since Hoenn is an island separate from Johto. However, Johto is not mentioned in Emerald. It is replaced by someone mentioning that the family had moved from somewhere far away.
