==Synopsis==

As [[Ash]] and his friends are on their way to [[Shippou City]], {{an|Dent}} and {{an|Iris}} had stopped somewhere in the forest to battle. {{Ash}}, observing them from the side, questions why he isn't the one battling. Iris tells him that he is too serious, and a {{m|Volt Tackle}} from {{AP|Pikachu}} would be unbearable for {{TP|Iris|Kibago}}. She then commands Kibago to use {{m|Scratch}} on {{TP|Dent|Yanappu}}. Slowly, Kibago trots over, and Yanappu starts firing its {{m|Bullet Seed}} - one seed at a time. However, before Kibago could even reach Yanappu, the extremely gentle Bullet Seed attack proved too much for Kibago, and Kibago starts crying. Iris runs over to console Kibago and Ash hears her telling Kibago that it was only a practice. Dent then explains that they are practicing so as to get Kibago used to battle, and it was agreed previously that only 'soft' attacks at twenty percent will be used. Ash claims that battles are more productive when full effort is being put in, and Iris rebukes him for not being a gentleman and for acting like a child. Dent tells Ash that as one of Kibago's first battles, they should let Iris decide how it should be conducted, which Ash reluctantly agrees.

When Kibago is feeling better, Iris tells it to perform another Scratch attack on Yanappu. Slowly, Kibago trots over to Yanappu, but the latter blocks its attacks by grabbing the fin on its head. As Kibago flails its arms around, Iris complains and requests Dent to be more serious. Dent tells them that they ''are'' being serious; this is the strategy they usually employ in [[Gym]] battles: to block the opponent's attacks then follow up with a close-ranged attack. Yanappu then charges its {{m|SolarBeam}}. As Iris panics, Ash asks if Kibago knows any other moves it could use to counter. Iris then claims that it has one other move, but while contemplating on whether or not to use it, Yanappu unleashes the SolarBeam attack which it had been charging: a tiny fleck of light which hits Kibago squarely in the head and causes it to roll over. Shortly after, Ash tells Iris to let Kibago use 'the other move' as using a variety of moves is also part of training. Frustrated, Iris orders Kibago to use {{m|Dragon Rage}}. Kibago starts charging energy, its belly glowing in blue light. As its mouth gapes open, ready to launch the attack at Yanappu, it suddenly blunders, causing a gigantic explosion and a large crater to form. All but Kibago were then covered in soot and severely surprised by the attack.

Meanwhile in an abandoned building, [[Jessie]], [[James]] and {{MTR}} are huddled together in front of a computer-like device. [[Giovanni]] appears on the screen, and instructs the [[Team_Rocket#The_trio|Team Rocket]] trio to travel to the [[Resort Desert]]. As it appears, the Resort Desert is at the center of an energy flow with the same energy signature as the one found at the [[Site of Dreams]]. Obtaining such an energy is a key component of Team Rocket's ultimate plan, and as such, they are to meet up with another Team Rocket agent to investigate a meteorite fragment that is located there.

Taking a break on the branches of a large tree, Iris glumly explains that Kibago has not mastered Dragon Rage yet. Ash and Dent then joke that it was more like a "sneeze" than a "rage", which only offends Iris. As Iris is troubled by Kibago's Dragon Rage, she reveals to them that Kibago only knows the two moves it had used earlier on, and with regard to its Dragon Rage, it always explodes instead of being shot out as a ball. Iris was hoping that by taking things slowly, it would gradually improve its performance. Meanwhile, Kibago returns with fruits it had plucked from a tree, and was praised by Dent. It then returns to the tree to pluck more fruits.

As Ash and Dent comments positively on Kibago's potential, Ash then offers to battle with Iris' Kibago. However, Iris refuses to, and says she does not want to lose. Ash and Dent then became curious as to how she got Kibago in the first place. She then explains that it was given to her by the old matriarch from her hometown, a place which specialized in raising {{type|Dragon}}d Pokémon. There, it was a traditional rite of passage for a young trainer to be given a Pokémon, and to go on a journey where they would grow together. A trainer had to raise the Kibago he/she was given into an {{p|Ononokus}}, a proof that the trainer had grown to fully understand its Pokémon and its heart. As they had already left their hometown for some time, Iris became concerned about how Kibago was developing and thus requested to battle Dent. She then realizes that Kibago had disappeared.

Meanwhile, Kibago is standing on a thin branch, trying to pick a cluster of fruit dangling near the edge of the branch. As it inched closer and stretched out, Pikachu cries out in warning. A while later, Kibago finally moves close enough and grabs one of the fruit. However, the branch it was standing on now bends threateningly low; as the stalk of the fruit cleaves from the tree, the branch springs up, and Kibago loses balance, tumbling down into the bush below and into between the horns of a sleeping Pokémon. Alarmed, the gigantic purple centipede-like Pokémon awakens from its slumber and shakes its head rapidly and violently, trying to free Kibago from its horns.

For a moment the {{t|Bug}} Pokémon tried to escape, Pikachu jumps off the tree and attacks it with {{m|Iron Tail}}. Enraged, it charges at Pikachu only to miss and send the tree behind Pikachu flying into the air. Pikachu tries to run away, and Kibago attempts a Dragon Rage attack on its captor. However, once again, the attack explodes before it could be launched.

The group notice the explosion, and realizing where Pikachu and Kibago were, they run towards it. Pikachu comes running in the opposite direction, and upon seeing Ash, he tries to explain what had happened. The gigantic bug Pokémon pops out from behind a bush and Kibago is heard screaming, apparently being shaken wildly again. Ash checks his [[Pokédex]] and realize its called a {{p|Pendra}}.

Pendra appears in front of the group and begins chasing the group, firing {{m|Toxic}} globs that dissolves a large rock and a nearby tree. Ash and Dent then attempt to battle it and rescue Kibago, using Yanappu and {{TP|Ash|Tsutarja}}. Yanappu starts by firing Bullet Seed at its feet, and while the wild Pendra finches, Tsutarja grabs its horns. However, Pendra proved too strong against Tsutarja when it spun her around wildly, thereby causing her to faint from dizziness. Pendra then continues its rampage. As it approaches Ash and Dent, Iris steps in front of them and takes out another [[Poké Ball]], hesitating to send the Pokémon out. After Ash had reminded her about the urgency of the situation, she plucks up her courage and hurls the Poké Ball into the air, releasing a curled up Pokémon. Ash then checks his Pokédex, and it is revealed to be a {{p|Doryuzu}}.

Iris begs the stationary Doryuzu to assist her in saving Kibago. However, after being ignored, she decides to help Kibago herself and devises a plan. Yannapu starts charging SolarBeam while Ash sends out {{TP|Ash|Pokabu}}. Together with Pikachu, Pokabu attacks Pendra at its feet, delaying its advance and giving Dent's Yanappu time to launch its SolarBeam to stop the Pendra in its tracks. Right from above, Iris grabs a vine and swings over Pendra's head, grabbing Kibago's leg and then landing safely. The team then celebrate; Ash recalling Pokabu, and Dent, his Yanappu.

However, their celebration is short-lived, as Pendra recovers and turns to Iris, ready to attack. It brushes its hind feet against the ground in preparation to charge, but doing so, it accidentally knocks Doryuzu and sends it rolling away. Agitated, Doryuzu {{m|Dig|burrows underground}} and surfaces, hitting Pendra in the face. The two Pokémon stare at each other, eyes glowing with fury; a battle is about to ensue. Ash asks Iris to give commands, but Iris simply states that Doryuzu will not listen to her, and as such, the team watches as Pendra launches another Toxic attack at Doryuzu. Doryuzu, being a partial {{Type|Steel}}-type Pokémon, is not affected by {{Type|Poison}} attacks, and merely slaps the toxins away. Doryuzu then uses {{m|Drill Liner}}, before tossing a charging Pendra into the sky and across the forest as it tries to use a counter-attack. Doryuzu lets out a victorious roar, and as the group express their gratitude towards it, it stares into the sky for a while before grunting and returning back to its dormant drill-like state. Iris recalls Doryuzu.

Dent then encourages Iris to train at her own pace with both Kibago and Doryuzu, when Ash offers to battle them. Iris refuses again, telling Ash that if he wants to battle so badly, then he should battle with Pikachu. Taking her comment literally, Ash excitedly agrees and both trainer and Pokémon stand across each other in the open ground, taking their places and ready to battle. Ash tells Pikachu to shock him with {{m|Thunderbolt}}, and subsequently ram him with {{m|Volt Tackle}}, to which the {{t|Electric}} Mouse Pokémon complies. Dent comments that they both are a truly unique couple while Iris is awestruck that they took her seriously. Pikachu continues to shock Ash, lighting up the entire forest, as both Iris and Dent watch, speechless.

==Synopsis==

After arriving in [[Isshu]], having being struck by blue lightning from a thundercloud and losing to [[Shooti]]'s {{TP|Shooti|Tsutarja}}, {{AP|Pikachu}} is now in [[Professor Araragi]]'s lab, and is being excessively charged by electricity. {{p|Mijumaru}} watches from outside the room, while the two Professors, [[Professor Oak]] and Professor Araragi attempt to restore power to the lab's electronics. Meanwhile, a large blue lightning bolt continuously rains downwards, and the silhouette of the legendary Pokémon {{p|Zekrom}} is seen hiding within the clouds. Its wings glow bright blue and with a burst of energy, it flies up towards the sky.

Pikachu falls on all fours, screaming in pain. {{Ash}}, in an attempt to calm it down, immediately grabs Pikachu, and is shocked by the electricity. Immediately, the blue lightning and the black clouds disappears suddenly and the sky is calm once again. Ash falls back onto the ground, and [[Delia Ketchum|his mom]], out of concern, rushes to his side. Pikachu lies on the ground on its belly, its cheeks emitting sparks. The electronic systems in the lab then mysteriously regain power.

Mrs. Ketchum, followed by Mijumaru who walks up to Ash, both express their concern over him. Ash reassures them and gets up immediately, apparently worried about Pikachu. The {{t|Electric}} Mouse Pokémon gets up on its feet, smiles, then charges its tail with electricity, showing its Ash that it has recovered. In order to test out Pikachu's electricity further, Ash commands Pikachu to use {{m|Thunderbolt}} and {{m|Volt Tackle}} on him. After shocking Ash pretty good, Ash comes to the conclusion that Pikachu is back to normal, before collapsing due to exhaustion from the electric attacks that shocked him.

Later that night, while having dinner together with Pikachu, his mother and [[Professor Oak]], Ash announces that he wants to begin a new adventure in Isshu, to be able to meet new Pokémon and make new friends, and will be challenging the [[Isshu League]]. Approving of his decision, Professor Oak tells him that he will take good care of his other Pokémon while he is away, while Ash's mother advises Pikachu to look after Ash. Professor Oak, as a [[Pokémon Researcher|researcher]], then requests Ash to occasionally report to him about new Pokémon and discoveries. Right after their dinner, Professor Araragi gives him a [[Pokédex]] and five [[Poké Ball]], and tells him that the first [[Gym]] is at [[Sanyou City]]. She also reminds him that he may meet his rival, [[Shooti]], while on his journey.

As the sun rises in the morning, Ash is now prepared to leave for his journey. Meanwhile, Mrs Ketchum, standing beside the two Professors, now rattles off a list of advise and to-dos for Ash on his journey. He tells her that he is not a small boy anymore, and when Professor Araragi informs him about the [[Pokémon Center]] after leaving the forest, he turns around and sets off, the three adults cheering him on. Mijumaru watches from behind.

Ash walks into the forest, wondering what kind of Pokémon he will capture first. He then hears rustling from a bush he jogs past, and seeing something purple, he checks his Pokédex. The electronic gadget displays a picture of a {{p|Kibago}}, apparently green in color. Talking about Kibago's properties and behavior, Ash wonders why what he sees is so different from what it is being displayed. Nevertheless, without thinking, he throws a [[Poké Ball]], and it hits... a girl's head! The girl rises from the bush, engraged at being thought of as a Pokémon. Apparently, it was actually her purple hair that Ash had spotted while she was picking fruits. Ash immediately apologies. Accepting his apology, the girl raises the fruit she had picked to her hair and a Kibago pops out, grabs the fruit and lands on the ground, eating it.

As Pikachu walks forward towards Kibago, it was spotted by the girl and was grabbed. She then starts playing with its cheeks, hugging it tightly and starts cuddling it. She asks Ash about Pikachu, and the two then formally introduce each other. The girl is actually named {{an|Iris}}. During the conversation, Pikachu struggles to breathe and discharges a lot of electricity, causing Iris to drop to the ground. Later on, Iris apologizes to Pikachu, and she questions Ash about the incident that happened yesterday. Upon hearing that Professor Araragi described the Pokémon as Zekrom, she starts further questioning him, but Ash and Pikachu, having spotted a {{p|Shikijika}}, became distracted and chases after it.

Somewhere in a cave, [[Jessie]], [[James]] and {{MTR}} are reporting to [[Giovanni]], who has learnt that their infiltration to the Isshu region was successful. The [[Team Rocket]] trio, plotting to capture Pikachu and a legendary Pokémon they had encountered, requests to have their Pokémon that they had left in the Headquarters. However, [[Giovanni's secretary]] interrupts, and tells them that using Pokémon that are not native to Isshu would raise suspicions, so they will have to catch Pokémon only found in Isshu. {{MTR}} then wonders if he will be alright, as he is not native to Isshu. Giovanni takes his leave, and the three become very determined to succeed. Back at the HQ, Giovanni once again reaffirms his secretary's doubts by telling her that trusts the the trio, and that he is sure that their operations will result in Isshu's secret organization revealing themselves. Meanwhile, the trio are inspecting the 'Starter Kit' they have been sent (which comes with Poké Balls), when a colony of {{p|Koromori}} flies towards them.

Back in the forest, Ash spots a herd of Shikijika near a pond, and checks his Pokédex. Without thinking again, he throws a Poké Ball at one of them, to which it easily deflected with its head. Iris then tells him that he has to weaken a Pokémon before it can be captured. Ash was about to send Pikachu into battle when suddenly, one of the Shikijika alerts the herd, and they all run away. Apparently, the Shikijika was alerted because a scurry of {{p|Minezumi}} was on a rampage, rather than it being due to Pikachu's presence.

Night soon approaches and the sun begins to set. As Ash and Iris begins searching for food, Ash picks an apple from the tree and wonders if it could be eaten. However, Iris manages to obtain a mountain of apples from the same tree, significantly burying Ash and Pikachu underneath.

As night falls, Iris and Kibago are sitting on the tree, while Ash and Pikachu are sitting on the ground, all four of them eating apples. They soon talk about yesterday's incident whereby Pikachu was unable to generate electric attacks due to Zekrom's mysterious powers. Iris then exclaims excitedly about encountering Zekrom, while Ash starts talking about the possibility of meeting mysterious Pokémon like Zekrom everywhere. Ash looks up, and realizes that Iris and Kibago had fallen asleep.

Ash and Pikachu begin admiring the brilliant, star-filled night sky, when a shooting star, a symbol of good luck, runs across their field of vision. The two soon become excited about their journey, and as they drown themselves in a babble of energized chatter, Mimjumaru appears from behind a bush, oblivious to the two of them...

The next day, Ash wakes to find Iris missing, but nevertheless continues with his journey. He sees a {{p|Mamepato}} flying above the forest, checks his Pokédex, then starts chasing after it. Reaching a clearing where a flock of Mamepato had gathered, Ash tells Pikachu to engage the one closest to it. Pikachu, using its super-effective Thunderbolt against Mamepato, causes it to faint. However, when Ash is about to throw a Poké Ball, the enraged flock of Mamepato attacks Ash and Pikachu with {{m|Air Cutter}} and {{m|Quick Attack}}, buying enough time for the fainted Mamepato to recover and flee. As the entire flock of Mamepato flee, Ash feels dejected and tuckered out from the massive attack they just sustained... until one particular Mamepato walks in front of Ash and starts pecking at the ground.

Grabbing this opportunity, Ash commands Pikachu to use Quick Attack, and Mamepato is sent flying across the ground. It then manages to get onto its feet, recovers and tries to regain an awareness of its surroundings. As it was doing so, Pikachu jumps into the air and its tail hardens into block of shiny metal. With one fell swoop, it lands its {{m|Iron Tail}} attack on Mamepato, causing it to fall back onto its belly. Ash quickly throws a Poké Ball, and Mamepato turns into a red blob of energy that is soon drawn into the red-white sphere. The ball lands on the ground, and starts tethering back and forth. Ash and Pikachu watches quietly, waiting for the indication on the Poké Ball to signify Mamepato's capture. For a moment Ash thought he had caught it, but the Poké Ball eventually burst open and Mamepato escapes into the air.

Now, in retaliation, Mamepato attacks Pikachu with {{m|Gust}}, Quick Attack and then an Air Cutter. Confident of itself, it attempts to finish Pikachu off with a second Quick Attack. This time, however, Pikachu jumps into the air in time and dodges it, and Mamepato flies uncontrollably in the air, hitting a nearby tree. Pikachu then prepares a Thunderbolt attack as Mamepato gets up, trying to avoid the attack, but fails - it was hit and became unconscious. Ash throws a Poké Ball again, Mamepato turns into a red globe of energy and is, once again, drawn into the ball. The ball drops and shakes, Ash waits in anticipation. Will he be able to catch it? The red light soon disappears, and the ball stops moving. Ash has caught Mamepato!

As Ash and Pikachu celebrate the success of their first capture in Isshu, Iris shows up with an apple, saying that his celebration over catching a Mamepato is typical of a small child's behavior. Ash then exclaims that he now has a new partner when competing in the Isshu League. During the conversation, Kibago splits the apple given by Iris and shares it with Pikachu. However, before the two Pokemon could finish eating, pair of mechanical hands grab them. Ash and Iris turn around to find the Team Rocket trio, standing beside the 'hands'-machine and reciting their new [[Team Rocket mottos#Isshu|motto]].

Iris questions who Team Rocket are, and she soon realizes that they are a group of people who steals Pokémon for their evil ambitions and aim to conquer the world. Iris immediately demands Team Rocket to return her Kibago, but she also notice that Meowth is able to talk. As she is amazed, Meowth then self-proclaims that is it far more intelligent than all {{p|Meowth|other Meowths}}. Team Rocket then place Pikachu and Kibago in a glass cage, forcing Ash to send out Mamepato. In an attempt to show how strong Pokémon from [[Kanto]] are, Jessie sends Meowth to battle, who attempted to use {{m|Fury Swipes}}. With great flaps of its wings, Mamepato sends Meowth flying backwards with a {{m|Gust}} attack. Jessie then sends out a bat-like Pokémon which she had captured: {{TP|Jessie|Koromori}}. (She only learns of the name only when Iris announces it.) Koromori starts attacking Mamepato with an {{m|Air Slash}}, but Mamepato evades the attack and charges at Koromori with a Quick Attack. Koromori dodges to the side, turns around and uses Gust, knocking Mamepato down. Mamepato hits the ground and faints, and Koromori is recalled by its owner.

James then prepares a purple {{wp|Balloon (aircraft)|balloon}}, ready to escape from Ash and Iris. Desperate, Ash and Iris both climb a nearby tree, and Ash jumps off from the top, ready to grab the glass box that was hanging steadily underneath the balloon. However, he misses and falls back all the way to the ground. Seemingly hopeless at rescuing Pikachu and Kibago, Mijumaru suddenly appears from nowhere and throws its shell at Team Rocket's balloon. Air escapes from their balloon and they now descend downwards towards the ground, eventually shattering the box which contains Pikachu and Kibago. As the box breaks open and and the captured Pokémon fly out, both Ash and Iris jump forward to catch their Pokémon, while Mijumaru catches its shell, places it back at its belly, and jumps for joy.

However, Team Rocket will not retreat without a fight. As Ash and and Iris refuse to hand over their Pokémon, Ash tells Pikachu to attack with Thunderbolt. Jessie immediately sends out Koromori, and the Bat Pokémon uses Air Slash on Pikachu and Kibago before Pikachu's electric attack could hit. For a second time, Jessie tells Koromori to use Air Slash. Just before Koromoro could perform its attack, Mijumaru jumps in front of the two Pokémon and uses {{m|Water Gun}} on Koromori, sending it flying towards Team Rocket. Pikachu gets up. With a surge of electricity, it charges itself and attempts to run its {{m|Volt Tackle}} into Team Rocket. However, James throws a smoke bomb and a smoke curtain is formed, causing Pikachu to run into the smoke. When the smoke has cleared, however, Team Rocket had already disappeared. Pikachu and Kibago, tired and exhausted, faints and collapses onto the ground. Ash grabs Pikachu and thanks Mijumaru. Then, together with Iris, they both rush to the [[Pokémon Center]]. Mijumaru stares blankly as they disappeared into the distance, puzzled as to what had happened.

Later that evening, Ash's Pikachu and Mamepato and Iris' Kibago were healed at the Pokémon Center. [[Nurse Joy]] exclaims that it is the first time she had seen and healed a Pikachu, and Ash makes his introduction. As she learns that Ash is from [[Pallet Town]] in the [[Kanto]] region and it is his first time visiting an Isshu Pokémon Center, she formally welcomes him on behalf of all Pokémon Centers. Iris then thanks Ash for helping her rescue Kibago, but Ash says that Mijumaru should be thanked instead. As Ash wonders why Mijumaru had helped them, the Sea Otter Pokémon secretly peeps into the Pokémon Center and observes Ash...

It first aired in Japan on February 7, 2008, and in the United States on July 19, 2008.

== Synopsis ==
{{Ash}} and {{ashfr|his friends}} are excited as they spot [[Veilstone City]]. Their excitement is cut short when a blue sphere of energy flies towards them. They ducked and noticed multiple spheres coming from one spot, Ash identifying them as {{m|Aura Sphere}}s. They head to the source, {{AP|Pikachu}} and {{TP|Dawn|Piplup}} leading. A blast destroys a portion of a fence, which the group uses as an observation point. Inside, [[Pokémon]] watch as a [[Maylene|pink-haired woman]] dodges an oncoming {{TP|Maylene|Lucario}}. Ash, having [[M08|encountered a Lucario before]], is thrilled to see it and checks his [[Pokédex]] as Lucario battles the woman. She dodges the Pokémon’s attacks and even kicks an Aura Sphere back to Lucario, the Pokémon standing aside and dodging the attack. Ash is awed while {{an|Brock}} fills {{an|Dawn}} in on what Aura Spheres are and how they’re connected to [[aura]]. Lucario prepares a {{m|Bone Rush}}, which the woman anticipates, somersaulting and dodging multiple strikes. The Bone Rush eventually fades mid-strike as Dawn notices the battling being too intense for {{pkmn|training}}.

Suddenly, {{m|Thunder|an electric attack}} strikes near Ash and his friends, tossing Piplup facedown onto the field as Pikachu defends Piplup. An {{TP|Paul|Electabuzz}} comes out from behind a tree snickering, Pikachu shocked at who the adversary is, apparently recognizing it. Ash and his friends notice as Piplup rushes towards Electabuzz, Pikachu following. Piplup {{m|headbutt}}s Electabuzz right in the chest, but it repulses the Penguin Pokémon, making it crash into Pikachu. Both Pikachu and Piplup are angry and get into a hand-to-hand brawl with Electabuzz. While attempting to stop the fight, Ash and his friends wind up getting shocked. The woman and Lucario stop sparring and notice the situation, Lucario launching an Aura Sphere into the fiasco, stopping the battle and dazing the Pokémon. She rushes up to them and apologizes for Lucario’s rough action, but Lucario shrugs it off. A [[Reggie|purple-haired man]] comes up to help, identifying [[Maylene]], who in turn identifies him as [[Reggie]]. Electabuzz tries to sneak away, but Reggie catches the Pokémon, Electabuzz turning around and laughing sheepishly. Ash suggests that maybe the Electabuzz is [[Paul]]’s, which Pikachu confirms. Maylene and Reggie take note of the comment and Reggie identifies Pikachu as one that can use {{m|Volt Tackle}}. He formally introduces himself and mentions that he is Paul’s older brother, surprising Ash and his friends, as well as confirming that the Electabuzz is indeed Paul’s and that he leaves some of {{cat|Paul's Pokémon|his Pokémon}} with Reggie to train since he's a {{pkmn|Breeder}}. After formal introductions, Ash brings up his goal form a [[gym]] battle and asks if Paul has already won a [[badge]] in Veilstone. Reggie mentions that Paul defeated Maylene, pointing her as the [[Gym Leader]]. Ash formally asks for a gym battle, but she declines, which causes Lucario to blast her with an Aura Sphere. Reggie explains why Lucario is upset at Maylene for wanting to give up and is simply trying to help her out. [[Team Rocket]] eavesdrops nearby and plans to steal the powerful Lucario.

Maylene gets up after Lucario’s attack as a group of {{OBP|Black Belt|Trainer class}}s meets her, displeased at her complaints. Reggie mentions that despite being well respected as a battler, her short rein as Gym Leader is causing her to have doubts about her fighting abilities. Maylene continues to plead as Lucario launches another Aura Sphere, which Maylene blocks without looking. Reggie confronts her, asking if what Paul said upset her. Ash asks what happened, and Reggie fills Ash in regarding what happened in Paul's battle against Maylene.

The [[Veilstone Gym]] is a {{type2|Fighting}} Gym, and therefore Paul brought {{type2|Flying}} Pokémon to use {{t|Flying|type advantage}}. Reggie explains that Paul's {{TP|Paul|Murkrow}} had recently [[Evolution|evolved]] into a {{p|Honchkrow}} which took out Maylene’s {{p|Meditite}} and {{p|Machoke}} in no time. When Maylene then brought out Lucario, Paul used a {{TP|Paul|Magmar}} and as Lucario is part {{type2|Steel}} it was defeated just as quickly by Magmar's {{type2|Fire}} moves. Maylene acknowledges her poor performance and lack of sync with her Pokémon and says that what Paul said after she gave him his badge was true. Ash asks what Paul said.

Reggie admits that Paul always had a cruel streak, but Maylene is upset at the memory and runs off, Lucario starting to follow but stopping. Reggie offers to console Maylene and apologizes to Ash about the situation. Brock suggests to find another gym for the time being but Dawn steps forward and offers to talk to Maylene instead. Lucario leads Dawn and Piplup to the location as Ash wonders what her plan is.

Maylene tries to meditate near a river as she senses Lucario. However, seeing Dawn gets her attention. Back at Reggie's home, he feeds Pikachu and {{AP|Chimchar}} while talking to Ash and Brock about Maylene's doubts about being a Gym Leader, something Brock [[Pewter Gym|is familiar with]]. Dawn talks with Maylene about her similar feelings, having suffered [[DP049|two]] [[DP061|previous]] {{pkmn|Contest}} letdowns recently which have led to her taking a break from contests for a while. While Piplup exercises and swims, both continue to share their similar doubts, how Dawn may tie down Ash's progress and Maylene letting down Lucario. Team Rocket, eavesdropping the whole time, reveal themselves and recite their [[Team Rocket mottos|motto]], wanting Lucario. Maylene gets ready to battle, as with Lucario.

Meanwhile, Reggie pets Chimchar, remembering it as Paul’s former. Reggie asks how Ash tolerates Paul’s [[rival|rivalry]] and brutal training tactics, which angers him and wanting to be one with his Pokémon. Reggie looks forward to a battle between Ash and Paul. While Team Rocket tries to sway Lucario to join, the Pokémon simply prepares a Bone Rush and sends them flying. Maylene thanks Lucario as Dawn realizes Lucario only wants to battle. Dawn asks for a battle with Maylene as she agrees, Lucario also pleased.

Meanwhile, Reggie asks Ash to battle, wanting to evaluate him as a rival. Ash plans a three-on-three battle, similar to [[DP003|the one Ash and Paul had]], and Ash and {{cat|Ash's Pokémon|his Pokémon}} rush out. Reggie notes Chimchar is far happier now that it ever was with Paul as Brock notices that on top of the fireplace mantle are a complete collection of framed badges from [[Kanto]], [[Johto]], [[Hoenn]] and [[Sinnoh]] and six of the seven [[symbol]]s from the Kanto [[Battle Frontier]]. The Frontier Symbols frame is notably missing {{FB|Pyramid King|Brandon}}'s Brave Symbol. Brock thinks they're Paul’s, but they're actually Reggie’s. Dawn and Maylene arrive in time to watch the battle begin. Ash brings out {{AP|Gligar}}, which comes down on Ash's head. Ash asks Gligar to watch. Ash summons {{AP|Turtwig}} as the first as Reggie summons {{p|Bibarel}}. Turtwig fires {{m|Energy Ball}}, but Bibarel uses {{m|Super Fang}} to negate the attack before using {{m|Secret Power}} to consume Turtwig. Due to the grassy field, the effect puts Turtwig to {{status|sleep}}. Bibarel sends Turtwig flying with {{m|Take Down}}, but it wakes Turtwig. Bibarel charges with Super Fang, but Turtwig dodges and uses {{m|Razor Leaf}}. Ash mentions his inspiration from [[Gardenia]]'s {{TP|Gardenia|Turtwig}} as Turtwig prepares Energy Ball. Bibarel fires {{m|Ice Beam}}, but Turtwig jumps to dodge and fires Energy Ball, [[fainting|knocking out]] Bibarel.

Reggie recalls Bibarel while Turtwig happily latches onto Ash's arm. Ash gets the first win as Dawn mentions his consistent training for Energy Ball. Lucario notices Maylene watching Ash’s battle skill intently. Reggie summons {{p|Swalot}} as Ash recalls Turtwig, checking his Pokédex before sending out {{AP|Staravia}}. Staravia launches {{m|Quick Attack}}, but Swalot absorbs it and uses {{m|Stockpile}}, gaining size and power. Ash repeats Quick Attack, and Swalot repeats Stockpile. Brock notices the pattern and predicts the outcome. Staravia switches to {{m|Aerial Ace}}, but Swalot uses {{m|Spit Up}} to unleash the energy, striking Staravia. Swalot returns to normal size as Staravia recovers and uses Aerial Ace. Swalot shoots the Starling Pokémon down with {{m|Sludge Bomb}}, and Ash catches Staravia from the fall, giving the win to Reggie.

Reggie complements Ash’s Staravia and offers to demonstrate a [[move]]. Reggie summons {{p|Staraptor}}, stunning Staravia as Ash checks his Pokédex. Ash has Staravia watch as Pikachu takes the lead. Pikachu fires {{m|Thunderbolt}} as Staraptor dodges and charges with {{m|Brave Bird}}. Pikachu tries to spin-dodge past, but Staraptor extends its wing and strikes Pikachu, knocking it down and hitting with the full attack. Staraptor flies away as sparks emit from both Pokémon taking damage. Staraptor charges with {{m|Steel Wing}} as Pikachu uses {{m|Iron Tail}} to jump and dodge. Pikachu comes down with Volt Tackle as Staraptor uses {{m|Wing Attack}} to counter. Both attacks land and Pikachu lands, shaken but standing. Staraptor took the full hit and hits the ground, unable to battle. Ash wins the match. Reggie recalls Staraptor as the two {{pkmn|Trainer}}s thank each other. Ash knows that Brave Bird was the move demonstrated, and Reggie offers to teach it to Staravia, which Ash and Staravia agree to. Reggie asks Maylene to reconsider the match between her and Ash, but Dawn objects as she asked for a Gym Battle first, shocking everyone else. The episode ends as Dawn prepares for her first ever Gym Battle, which may hopefully help both Maylene and Dawn regain their shattered confidence.
