Platina is a member of the house of Berlitz, a 200-year old family of wealthy scholars famous in [[Sinnoh]]. She wears diamond and pearl rings. The Berlitz family tradition is for members coming of age to travel to the peak of [[Mt. Coronet]] to obtain materials to make their personal family crest. At the suggestion of the Platina's butler, Sebastian, her father hired two bodyguards to protect her in her journey. [[Professor Rowan]] provided her with three [[Pokédex]]es, three [[Pokétch]]es, and the three Sinnoh [[starter Pokémon]] so that Platina would share them with her bodyguards to assist him in his research.

However, because {{Spe|Diamond}} and {{Spe|Pearl}} coincidentally match the bodyguards' description--one in a red scarf and the other in a green scarf--Platina presumes they are her bodyguards instead, and the duo think that this journey is a sort of [[wp:Reality television|reality TV show]]. Platina assumed that they were actually her bodyguards, chosen so the trio would not seem odd.

Platina is amazed by the closeness of Pearl and Diamond, as well as their various skills: Pearl's assortment of [[Battle|battling]] advice and Diamond's ability to cook [[Poffin]]s and instincts on Pokémon. She also is an audience for their various Manzai attempts and is amused by them at times. Platina often can be demanding of Pearl, annoying him. Platina is also unaware of a {{s|CommonerShipping|crush}} Diamond has on her.

Platina is very knowledgeable as a result of reading lots of books during her childhood. However, since beginning her journey she has decided that it is better to actually experience as much as possible. For this reason, Platina challenges the [[Gym]]s of Sinnoh and also takes on other challenges such as the [[Super Contest]]s of [[Hearthome City]]. She has shown a natural tendency to recognize patterns and has an almost encyclopedic knowledge of various areas of Sinnoh and Pokémon in general, although towards the beginning of her journey, she had difficulty dealing with wild Pokémon.

It seems, that after saving her from [[Team Galactic]], Platina gains respect for Diamond and Pearl, by calling them by their first names, but, she still refuses to give her name. Diamond has a somewhat natural instinct to judge how a Pokémon feels and can be quite observant when something perks his interest.

A mix-up has them thinking they will gain a prize for escorting {{Special|Platina}} to [[Mt. Coronet]]. Platina, mistaking them for her bodyguards, has given them [[Pokédex]]es, [[Pokétch]]es, and [[starter Pokémon]] from [[Professor Rowan]]. Eventually, they are told the truth by Platina's real bodyguards, although Diamond knew long before Pearl that Platina wasn't a tour guide. He figured this out from various clues such as the fancy hotels, and Platina not actually acting like a tour guide.

Diamond has a large amount of respect for Pearl; the two are as close as brothers. Diamond also has a not-so-small {{s|CommonerShipping|crush}} on {{Special|Platina}}.

However, Diamond has changed a lot from the beginning of his journey. He was convinced by Pearl to set aside their dream of becoming great comedians to protect Platina until she finishes her journey after the incident in [[Veilstone City]].

He first appeared in the {{ho|Battle Frontier}}, having been brought there by {{p|Latios}} and {{p|Latias}}. There he met [[Todd Snap|Todd]]. After he bound and gagged {{Tucker}} and stole his {{p|Salamence}}, Emerald was about to be banned from the Frontier, until it was revealed that Emerald was attracting media attention. Upon the risk of losing major publicity, the [[Frontier Brains]] and [[Scott]] eventually agreed to his challenge: he would defeat all of the seven Brains within seven days.

Emerald seems to have an issue with his own height, as he wears his hair tall, clothing with extra long sleeves, and platform shoes. Much of his clothing appears to be intended to make him look taller than he really is. Even despite this, Emerald is much shorter than he already appears, as revealed by {{Greta}} and Todd while he is sleeping.

Emerald doesn't like [[Pokémon]] themselves, but he likes [[Pokémon battle]]s. To the amazement of Todd, he is an expert at battling. As he does not train his own Pokémon, he borrows the Pokémon he uses from {{Special|Crystal}}.

Later on, Emerald's reason for visiting the Frontier is revealed: he was assigned by [[Professor Oak]] and Crystal to capture {{p|Jirachi}}. He attempted first time after his fight with {{Brandon}} at the [[Battle Frontier (Hoenn)#Battle Pyramid|Battle Pyramid]] and was almost successful. However, after that, he went back to his original challenge.

Despite his protests, his Pokémon love him greatly and tend to get jealous of each other; recently, his {{p|Sudowoodo}} (revealed to be [[gender|female]] because of its motherly nature) and {{p|Sceptile}} got into an argument over Emerald's food and began cooking with [[Berry|berries]] in a frenzy before being broken up by Emerald's {{p|Dusclops}}. His Sceptile's interest in Emerald's [[Pokédex]] indicated that it evolved from [[Wally]]'s {{p|Grovyle}}. This was later confirmed.

Emerald carries several gadgets with him, primarily his extendable mechanical hands. He also has a pistol that shoots soil from various places around the world. By shooting a Pokémon with a "seal" of soil from its birthplace, the Pokémon is calmed by a sense of nostalgia.

Emerald has the ability to determine the birthplace of any Pokémon by sight. He uses this ability along with his gun to calm rampaging Pokémon that have been illegally added to the Battle Frontier, and has taken three of these cured Pokémon as his own.

It was later revealed that he was one of the orphans that Crys was helping. He looked up to her and wanted a Pokédex of his own, Professor Oak did want to offer it to him at one point but declined due to his animosity towards Pokémon while in the Pokémon Academy. He spent his time roaming around Hoenn and met the [[Trick Master]], who gave him the gadgets that were inspired by a [[Fiore|faraway land]]. He also found a green gem that was used as a test to call out {{p|Rayquaza}} but Emerald found the gem and it got attached to his forehead.

Sceptile, as a {{p|Treecko}}, was supposed to be Emerald's starter; however, the day he was going to receive it was the {{p|Groudon}} and {{p|Kyogre}} catastrophe. Emerald arrived just seconds after [[Professor Birch]] lost Treecko's Poké Ball in the waves. Treecko was eventually found by [[Wally]], and helped him to climb the [[Sky Pillar]] to awaken {{p|Rayquaza}}. While climbing, it evolved into {{p|Grovyle}}. When they reached the top, Rayquaza's power sent Grovyle flying out of the pillar, and it got lost again. After that, he became a rental Pokémon in the [[Battle Factory]]. He went berserk and Emerald calmed it down, then he used it in the battle against [[Factory Head Noland|Noland]]. After defeating Noland, Emerald took it. It was later proved that this Sceptile was the same lost Treecko when {{Special|Ruby}} and {{Special|Sapphire}} went to the Battle Frontier and their starters, Zuzu and Toro, recognized Sceptile.

However, their challenge was delayed when they teamed up to stop the rampaging {{p|Kyogre}} and {{p|Groudon}}, who had been awakened by [[Team Magma]] and [[Team Aqua]]'s actions, and ended up with only a day to beat the final Gym and Contest. Both of them succeeded in winning their final frontiers.

He believes that Pokémon battles are barbaric, and get his Pokémon dirty—something that he hates.

Ruby's extremely good at sewing and knitting. He makes clothes for all his Pokémon to wear, and even made Sapphire the clothes she wears for much of her adventures. His other hobby is photography. He has a photo album of all of his Pokémon's biggest moments - such as evolutions or contest victories. He's not shy about showing it off, either.

Ruby can be quite shallow at times, putting too much emphasis on outward appearances. He even once kicked Mimi out of his party for not being beautiful enough. Recently, however, Mimi returned to Ruby and, after being mocked by [[Archie]] for being weak and ugly, Ruby declared that Mimi had inner beauty and it evolved into a Milotic.

His first Pokémon were a {{p|Skitty}}, {{p|Poochyena}}, and {{p|Ralts}}, all given by his father [[Norman]]; his "starter" Pokémon was a {{p|Mudkip}} which he received from [[Professor Birch]].

==Ruby's journey==

Ruby once lived in [[Goldenrod City]], [[Johto]]. Ruby's family moved to [[Hoenn]] in volume 15, against his will as he felt that he preferred the modern cities of Johto to the wilderness and countryside in Hoenn. Ruby enjoys participating in {{g|Contest}}s, and wound up running away from his new home in [[Littleroot Town]] because he felt that he was being oppressed by his father, [[Norman]], who didn't approve of Ruby's lifestyle choice of being a Pokémon Coordinator to win all the Contests. Ruby despises Pokémon battles and refuses to battle unless he has no other choice, though as a child he adored battling.

As a child, he met Sapphire once, and the young Ruby and Sapphire had a lot of fun with each other... until their fun was interrupted by a Salamence. Acting quickly, Ruby was able to knock it out with his [[Pokémon]], but got his forehead split in the process. It was his fault that day, when his father failed the Gym Leader Test because the Salamence broke into Rayquaza's containment area, and set it free. At that time, Rayquaza was being held by the Pokémon Association near the place he and Sapphire were playing. Sapphire ran away crying, and later came to realize she ruined Ruby's dignity, and vowed to become stronger. Ruby, on the other hand, realized he had been too brutal, and promised to suppress his strength in battle.

After running away, Ruby encountered {{Special|Sapphire}} once again without recognizing her as the girl of so many years ago, who challenged him to a contest of her own—to see if he could win all the contests in Hoenn within 80 days, and if she could defeat all the [[Gym]]s. Ruby accepted readily, thinking that he would win without a doubt. However, their challenge was abandoned when they teamed up to stop the rampaging {{p|Kyogre}} and {{p|Groudon}} by using the Red and Blue Jewels. The challenge, made 80 days ago by {{Special|Sapphire}}, ended in a tie, with Ruby winning the [[Rank|Master Rank Contests]], and Sapphire winning the Balance badge.

==Backpack==
Besides necessities, Ruby also has a "Makeup Box" and "Sewing Box" in his backpack, for his contest appearances. Ruby has a pair of [[Running Shoes]] made by the [[Devon Corporation]]. He received them from his father for his eleventh birthday. They're extremely powerful and useful, and propel Ruby along the ground with bursts of compressed air.

Ruby's eyes are [[wp:Myopia|myopic]], and he has a pair of glasses to correct this. He's usually too vain to wear them, though.

Although by now her arms have been completely healed, Crystal has retained the habit of kicking her Poké Balls instead of throwing them. She's caught all non-legendary Pokémon for [[Professor Oak]]; more than any of the other characters in Pokémon Special.

She later adds Hoenn Pokémon to her collection and apparently begins to work full-time as one of Professor Oak's assistants. Crystal's Pokémon collection is used by {{Special|Emerald}} when he goes to the {{ho|Battle Frontier}}.

Crystal's special skill, as described by [[Professor Oak]], is Pokémon catching, and she is known as the "catcher" (捕える者).

==Pokémon==
Her "starter" Pokémon was a {{p|Chikorita}} which escaped from [[Professor Elm]]'s lab, longing to go on a journey. It should be noted, however, that Chikorita was not her first Pokémon, as she by her introduction already owned six. All of Crystal's party Pokémon have a symbol of a star somewhere on them. Some wear star necklaces or stickers, but her Cubone and Parasect had natural markings in the shape of stars.

The suffix "ee" (Japanese: "pyon") of the nicknames of her Pokémon was insisted by her mother, who named everyone except Chikorita.

Mega was a starter Pokémon under Professor Elm's care. With his friends setting out on a journey ({{p|Cyndaquil}} with [[Gold (Special)|Gold]] and {{p|Totodile}} with [[Silver (Special)|Silver]]), Mega wanted to set out on a journey as well. After some convincing, Crys let Mega join the team. He evolved again to a Meganium in the Whirl Islands.

'''Gold''' (Japanese: '''ゴールド''' ''Gold'') is the fifth main character of the manga series [[Pokémon Special]]. His starter Pokémon is a {{p|Cyndaquil}} which he "borrowed" from [[Professor Elm]]; what his actual first Pokémon was is not clear, since he grew up in a house full of Pokémon. His neighbors in [[New Bark Town]] refer to his family as the "House of Pokémon". He likes playing billiards, but sometimes he may use his Pokémon to cheat. His favorite idol/DJ is [[DJ Mary]] from the [[Goldenrod City|Goldenrod]] Radio Station.

He usually wears a pair of goggles and travels on a scooter. Instead of throwing/kicking his Poké Balls, he uses a billiard cue to shoot them out. Gold's hobbies include gambling, skateboarding, and trying foods from different cities. [[Prof. Oak]] noted that while {{spe|Red}} had some odd habits, Gold is much more immature and mischeivious.

Gold's special skill, as described by [[Professor Oak]], is Pokémon hatching and is known as "the hatcher" (孵す者). He has the ability to draw out the largest potential of a baby Pokémon, having lived with Pokémon his whole life.

At the end of the GSC saga, Gold goes to train with {{Special|Red}} on [[Mt. Silver]]. Later, during the Emerald saga, he bonds with {{Special|Emerald}}, likely due to their mutual mischevious natures.

She first appeared in volume three, when she was saved by {{Special|Red}} from a rampaging wild {{p|Dratini}}.

When Red goes missing, {{Special|Blue}} sends Yellow out to find him, and has her disguise herself as a boy. Most of the characters did not learn her real gender until the end of the G/S/C saga. Yellow's straw hat hides her ponytail as well as containing the [[Rainbow Wing]] and [[Silver Wing]].

Yellow's first Pokémon is a {{p|Rattata}} that Red caught for her. Her starter Pokémon is [[Pika|Red's Pikachu]] which travels with her when she searches for Red. She later obtained her own Pikachu, Chuchu, which made a {{p|Pichu}} egg with [[Pika|Red's Pikachu]] at the Johto [[Pokémon daycare]].

Yellow's special skill, as described by [[Professor Oak]], is Pokémon healing and is called the "healer" (癒やす者). She received psychic abilities from the [[Viridian Forest]], which include the ability to read the emotions of Pokémon and heal their wounds. Yellow is physically small and can still pass for a boy even at 14, something that is a running gag within the manga.

Green debuts in the first round of the manga, ''[[PS001|A Glimpse of the Glow]]'' where he and his rival {{Special|Red}} sees a {{p|Mew}} in a [[Pallet Town]] forest. Green has a serious, calm, and focused personality in everything he does. Although Red and Green were once bothered by each other because their personalities are so opposite, they ended up resolving their differences.

Green and his Scyther were trained by Chuck of Cianwood City when he was a child. Thus, Green has some cursory knowledge of martial arts, and his Scyther knew [[Generation II]] techniques.

Green also has a rivalry with [[Koga]] of [[Team Rocket]]. This began when Green almost killed Koga's {{p|Arbok}} by having his {{p|Charmeleon}} {{m|cut}} it in two, and continued on throughout the series till Koga's reclusion.

Green and Red set off to compete in filling up the [[Pokédex]] for Professor Oak. Green receives a Charmander from his grandfather and trains it extensively, causing it to [[evolve]] quickly.

During the course of their adventures, Red and Green accidentally traded Pokémon. This caused Green's {{p|Machoke}} to evolve, and Green took the opportunity to teach Red's Pokémon more exotic, varied, and useful moves. Red's training on Green's Pokémon made them more playful and lighthearted, something that greatly annoyed Green.

Green's cockiness becomes subdued as the story continues, and his personality becomes less mocking and more aloof and quiet. He often becomes flummoxed by {{Special|Blue}}'s hyperactive meddling in everyone's affairs.

At the [[Pokémon League]] tournament, Red's [[Saur|Venusaur]] barely defeats Green's [[Green's Charizard|Charizard]]. This tames their rivalry as the two finally begin to respect each other, and begin to become friendly rivals.

In the Yellow Saga, Green tutors {{Special|Yellow}} in more intense strategies for [[battle]]s. He later teams up with Koga to fight [[Agatha]] of the [[Elite 4]].

Green takes on the role of the [[Viridian City]] Gym Leader after Red is forced to turn it down. He captures several powerful Pokémon that were enraged by the Pokémon March Radio song and assists in the final battle with the [[Mask of Ice]].

Green and Red go to Professor Oak's lab at the professor's request. They don't see the professor but find a note that tells them to return the Pokédexes. As they leave they are attacked by a mysterious [[Pokémon]].
They decide to go to the [[Sevii Islands]].
He and Red go through a series of tests given to them by [[Brinca]] to obtain the ultimate attacks, {{m|Blast Burn}} and {{m|Frenzy Plant}}. Green teaches the legendary {{type2|Fire}} move Blast Burn to his Charizard.
After meeting up with Elite Four member, [[Lorelei]], they split up to defend the Sevii Islands from Team Rocket.
Green fights with [[Oca]] of the [[Beast Warrior Trio]] and his {{p|Shuckle}}s, learning that Team Rocket kidnapped his grandfather.
After saving Prof. Oak, he traveled back to Kanto, and helped stop the Team Rocket airship from crashing into [[Vermilion City]].
He was turned into stone soon afterwards by an energy explosion.

He, along with the other four who were turned to stone, are being shipped to the {{ho|Battle Frontier}} in a box to be revived.

For most part of this chapter, he, along with five other Pokédex-holders, remained turned into stones. It was only at nearly the end of the chapter that he and the others were liberated by {{Spe|Emerald}} with the help of the wish-granting [[legendary Pokémon]] {{p|Jirachi}}.

The original Blue was designed after the early sketches for a [[Lass]] and a [[female]] protagonist shown in early concept art for [[Pokémon Red and Green Versions]] (however, the idea of choosing the character's gender was unable to be implemented until [[Pokémon Crystal Version]] due to the limitations of the game card). Blue first met Red and tried to scam him out of his money by selling fake items. Red hunted her down to reclaim his money, but she used this opportunity to steal his [[badge]]s. Then Red learnt that her Squirtle was stolen from Professor Oak.

Later, she reveals that she was kidnapped by Ho-Oh as a child, and was in fact originally from [[Pallet Town]]. She has ornithophobia and is afraid of {{type2|Flying}} Pokémon because of this.

Blue eventually ends up as rival to [[Sabrina]], and helps Red and Green defeat the [[Elite Four]].

Afterwards, she manages to get into the 9th Pokémon League tournament without badges by making it through special qualifying elimination rounds. Blue makes it to fourth place, but is defeated by Professor Oak, who uses her fear of birds against her by using a team of Flying-type Pokémon to defeat her. At the end of the story, {{Special|Gold}} becomes impressed with Red and goes to train under him at Mt. Silver.

Red, Green, and Blue return to visit Professor Oak, who was kidnapped to make [[Pokédex]]es for Team Rocket and taken to the [[Sevii Islands]]. There at the islands, Red, Blue, and Green fight the new Team Rocket Admins, the [[Beast Warrior Trio]], as well as {{p|Deoxys}}, who is under control of Giovanni. Red undergoes special training on the second Sevii Island where his {{p|Venusaur}} learns the legendary {{type2|Grass}} move {{m|Frenzy Plant}}. However, he is still defeated by Deoxys, who he shares a strange connection with.

Mewtwo shows up and offers to battle under Red's command to get revenge on Deoxys. Mewtwo manages to defeat Deoxys on the Team Rocket helicopter. However, one of the Beast Warrior Trio has placed his {{p|Forretress}} all over the helicopter and ordered them to use {{m|Explosion}}, and while Deoxys transports everyone else aboard to safety, Red stays behind to defeat the Forretress and stop the aircraft from blowing up over [[Vermilion City]].

He later discovers that Deoxys absorbed Red's blood when it broke free from Team Rocket's lab.

At the end of the saga, Red is turned to stone along with the other main characters by Sird's beam intended for Deoxys.

He is impatient and is often accidentally getting himself and his friend, {{Special|Diamond}} into trouble. He is the straight man (''[[wp:Manzai|tsukkomi]]'') of the [[wp:Double act|comedy duo]], with Diamond as the funny man. His appearance is based off that of {{ga|Pearl}} from the video game series.

A mix-up has them thinking they will gain a prize for escorting {{Special|Platina}} to [[Mt. Coronet]]. Platina, mistaking them for her bodyguards, has given them [[Pokédex]]es, [[Pokétch]]es, and [[starter Pokémon]] from [[Professor Rowan]]. Pearl is eventually enlightened by Platina's real bodyguards about her true identity, and is shocked when Diamond had figured it out already. Afterwards, Pearl convinced Diamond to set their dream of becoming great comedians aside for the time being to protect Platina.

While Pearl does not have an active interest in battling, his father taught him a lot and so he has picked up a lot of useful techniques. He puts this into use by coaching Platina for her Gym challenges. Pearl is fairly hyper and tends to overeact at times. His most useful skill is being able to tell what move a Pokémon will use next and counter accordingly. He eventually begins to seriously train his Pokémon after discovering Platina's heritage.

Pearl is the unoffical leader of the party; he also composes battle strategies for Platina's Gym challenges. Pearl and Diamond are practically as close as brothers, however, that doesn't mean Diamond doesn't get on Pearl's nerves, at which point Diamond receives a smack to the head. Pearl has a deep respect for Platina, amazed at her level of skill in practically everything. But this is usually masked by Pearl's annoyance at her for being aloof.
