==Biology==

Deoxys is an alien-like, bipedal {{OBP|Pokémon|species}} that has four Formes, each focused on a different stat. The main components that are constant for all four Formes are dominantly a red color, a light blue face, and three light blue dots on its back arranged in a triangle. Typically, there is a purple stripe running down the center of its face and a purple, crystalline organ in its chest. Its white, circular eyes are set inside rectangular, black eye sockets. It is shown [[M07|in the anime]], that Deoxys may have a green crystalline organ and facial stripe.

In its Normal Forme, Deoxys has tapering legs with a segmented, vertical, blue stripe on the upper portion. The abdomen is black with vertical lines, while the majority of its skin is reddish-orange. The arms are capable of taking different forms, usually a pair of tentacles coiled in a double helix. One tentacle is the primary skin color, while the other is light blue. Alternately, it can form more humanoid arms with a red top and blue underside and a five-fingered hand. This Forme has a blunt protrusion with a single blue stripe on either side of its head and stubby tail.

While in its Attack Forme, Deoxys's legs remain tapered. However, its blue stripes are no longer segmented and run the entire length of the leg and there is now a large spike on the knee. Two pairs of whip-like tentacles with pointed tips, one reddish-orange and one blue, replace its previous coiled, blunted tentacles. The protrusions on its head are now triangular with an additional one extending from the top of its head. Most of its reddish-orange skin has receded, revealing a striated, black chest and abdomen. Finally, its tail is now longer and more pointed.

Deoxys's Defense Forme has bulky, wide legs that are somewhat flat at the end with a bluish-green spot on each knee. It retains its two pairs of red and blue tentacles, but they are now flat and broad. The head has fused with its body and all protrusions are gone, causing it to resemble a helmet. The reddish-orange skin now covers the entire body, so none of its inner black portions are visible. There is now a single blue stripe on each shoulder, and its tail has disappeared.

The Speed Forme of this Pokémon has a sleek black body with thin striation. The reddish-orange skin now covers only its head, hip joints, and the area around its crystal. There is now only one tentacle on each side of its body, one red and one blue. The protrusions on its head now point upward and the back of its head now forms a long spike. There is a long, thick blue stripe running down the center of this longer protrusion. More blue stripes appear on either hip joint and on its legs.

Deoxys was formed by the mutation of a virus from space. The Pokémon is highly intelligent; its brain appears to be the crystal in its chest. This organ is capable of firing laser beams. Additionally, Deoxys can use psychokinetic powers, which are useful for its [[signature move]] {{m|Psycho Boost}}. As shown [[M07|in the anime]], it is able to regenerate any part of its body that it may have lost during a battle. It has also demonstrated the ability to create an aurora without changing its Forme. These auroras can have different electromagnetic wavelengths and are used to communicate with other Deoxys. It is also shown that the various electromagnetic waves given off by people, Pokémon, and all electronics can obscure its vision if there is enough interference with its communication. This Pokémon came from {{DL|List of Pokémon by habitat|Rare Pokémon|outer space from inside of a meteor}}. Deoxys' different forms each possess different abilities and techniques.

In the anime and manga, Deoxys has been observed to create clones of itself. These clones have lifeless eyes and duller color, lack of the trademark crystal on the chest, and seem to be unable to change from the Normal Forme. Furthermore, they seem unable to morph their tentacles into hands. When these clones are defeated, they dissolve into dust-like particles.

Deoxys debuted in ''[[M07|Destiny Deoxys]]''. Two fell to the {{pkmn|world}} in a meteorite; one had a green crystalline organ, and the other had the standard purple one. When the Deoxys with the green crystal (which spent most of its time as a crystal in the {{pkmn|movie}}) was taken to [[LaRousse City]], the purple crystal Deoxys followed behind and began to search for it. As {{game|Emerald}} had not been released when the movie was produced, only its {{stat|Defense}}, Normal, and {{stat|Attack}} Formes appeared.

In ''[[DP112|Cheers on Castaways Isle!]]'', a Deoxys was seen in all of its Formes. It crash-landed as a meteor on a deserted island in the middle of [[Diablo's Ocean]], shattering upon impact and leaving only its crystal. As a result, the local {{type|Water}} Pokémon worked together to gather meteor fragments to help restore it. This eventually worked after receiving help from {{AP|Pikachu}} and {{TP|Dawn|Piplup}}.

In [[PK21]], a Deoxys saved Pikachu, Piplup, and a {{pkmn2|wild}} {{p|Skitty}} when they all fell from a stone staircase.

In ''[[SM124|Living on the Cutting Edge!]]'', a Deoxys was battling {{p|Rayquaza}} in outer space. The battle accidentally caused one of the meteors to head towards [[Alola]], though it was ultimately cut up by a {{DL|Ultra Beasts (anime)|Kartana}}, saving the [[region]] from harm. Deoxys plays a large part in ''[[DPAS1|Deoxys, The Phantom Pokémon! (Part 1)]]''. [[Hareta]] and [[Mitsumi]] come upon a large meteorite in [[Veilstone City]]. Mitsumi proceeds to tell him that there is a Pokémon that comes from a meteorite. He tells her that he's met Deoxys. She freaks out and doesn't believe him, so he tells the story of how he met Deoxys. Hareta is seen jumping around the forest until he starts riding a {{p|Drifloon}}. A {{p|Murkrow}} flies toward them and pecks the Drifloon, causing it to explode. Hareta is seen plummeting to the ground, and then bouncing off a {{p|Bibarel}}'s stomach. He lays down on the ground with the Bibarel as a pillow, when the Bibarel starts getting worried, because it sees the meteorite containing Deoxys zooming to the ground. The Bibarel tries to tell Hareta what's happening, and he looks up and wonders what it is. The Pokémon and Hareta try to get away as the meteorite crashes down. Deoxys emerges from the meteor, and Hareta thinks it might be a Pokémon. Meanwhile, [[Mars]] and some grunts see the crash, and begin to battle it, but to no avail.

[[Professor Rowan]] shows up, a little worried that something might have happened to Hareta. He asks Rowan what happened to "that weird Pokémon". They then see Deoxys, and Rowan is shocked to see such a rare Pokémon. It transforms to Attack Forme and fires off a {{m|Psycho Boost}} at Hareta and Rowan. Rowan tells Hareta not to make it any angrier, but instead, he jumps on top of Deoxys and asks what's wrong. It flings him off, then tries to fire another Psycho Boost at him, but he jumps around it, evading it completely. He jumps on it again, but it transforms to Speed Forme while he is still on it. It starts flying around the forest with Hareta, while he asks Deoxys what's wrong once more. It tells him what's wrong, but it throws him off itself. Then he battles Deoxys with his friends from the forest. {{p|Onix}} tries to {{m|Headbutt}} it, but it misses. It transforms to Defense Forme, and then Hareta jumps on Deoxys and covers its eyes. Then he tells a bunch of {{p|Kricketune}} to have a "super bug concert". Rowan compliments him on the super-effectiveness of the attack, then it transforms back to Normal Forme. It becomes calmer, but transforms to Attack Forme and fires off another Psycho Boost, this time hitting a {{p|Drifloon}}. It explodes, defeating Deoxys. Deoxys is totally calm now, and it merges its tentacles to create a hand, and it shakes hands with Hareta. Hareta finishes telling the story to Mitsumi, and tells her that it wanted to find out more about this planet.

Deoxys appears to draw inspiration from certain representations of {{wp|alien}}s and visual representations of the {{wp|nucleic acid double helix}}. ==Biology==

Deoxys is an alien-like, bipedal {{OBP|Pokémon|species}} that has four Formes, each focused on a different stat. The main components that are constant for all four Formes are dominantly a red color, a light blue face, and three light blue dots on its back arranged in a triangle. Typically, there is a purple stripe running down the center of its face and a purple, crystalline organ in its chest. Its white, circular eyes are set inside rectangular, black eye sockets. It is shown [[M07|in the anime]], that Deoxys may have a green crystalline organ and facial stripe.

In its Normal Forme, Deoxys has tapering legs with a segmented, vertical, blue stripe on the upper portion. The abdomen is black with vertical lines, while the majority of its skin is reddish-orange. The arms are capable of taking different forms, usually a pair of tentacles coiled in a double helix. One tentacle is the primary skin color, while the other is light blue. Alternately, it can form more humanoid arms with a red top and blue underside and a five-fingered hand. This Forme has a blunt protrusion with a single blue stripe on either side of its head and stubby tail.

While in its Attack Forme, Deoxys's legs remain tapered. However, its blue stripes are no longer segmented and run the entire length of the leg and there is now a large spike on the knee. Two pairs of whip-like tentacles with pointed tips, one reddish-orange and one blue, replace its previous coiled, blunted tentacles. The protrusions on its head are now triangular with an additional one extending from the top of its head. Most of its reddish-orange skin has receded, revealing a striated, black chest and abdomen. Finally, its tail is now longer and more pointed.

Deoxys's Defense Forme has bulky, wide legs that are somewhat flat at the end with a bluish-green spot on each knee. It retains its two pairs of red and blue tentacles, but they are now flat and broad. The head has fused with its body and all protrusions are gone, causing it to resemble a helmet. The reddish-orange skin now covers the entire body, so none of its inner black portions are visible. There is now a single blue stripe on each shoulder, and its tail has disappeared.

The Speed Forme of this Pokémon has a sleek black body with thin striation. The reddish-orange skin now covers only its head, hip joints, and the area around its crystal. There is now only one tentacle on each side of its body, one red and one blue. The protrusions on its head now point upward and the back of its head now forms a long spike. There is a long, thick blue stripe running down the center of this longer protrusion. More blue stripes appear on either hip joint and on its legs.

Deoxys was formed by the mutation of a virus from space. The Pokémon is highly intelligent; its brain appears to be the crystal in its chest. This organ is capable of firing laser beams. Additionally, Deoxys can use psychokinetic powers, which are useful for its [[signature move]] {{m|Psycho Boost}}. As shown [[M07|in the anime]], it is able to regenerate any part of its body that it may have lost during a battle. It has also demonstrated the ability to create an aurora without changing its Forme. These auroras can have different electromagnetic wavelengths and are used to communicate with other Deoxys. It is also shown that the various electromagnetic waves given off by people, Pokémon, and all electronics can obscure its vision if there is enough interference with its communication. This Pokémon came from {{DL|List of Pokémon by habitat|Rare Pokémon|outer space from inside of a meteor}}. Deoxys' different forms each possess different abilities and techniques.

In the anime and manga, Deoxys has been observed to create clones of itself. These clones have lifeless eyes and duller color, lack of the trademark crystal on the chest, and seem to be unable to change from the Normal Forme. Furthermore, they seem unable to morph their tentacles into hands. When these clones are defeated, they dissolve into dust-like particles.

As a result, the local {{type|Water}} Pokémon worked together to gather meteor fragments to help restore it. This eventually worked after receiving help from {{AP|Pikachu}} and {{TP|Dawn|Piplup}}.

Deoxys plays a large part in ''[[DPAS1|Deoxys, The Phantom Pokémon! (Part 1)]]''. [[Hareta]] and [[Mitsumi]] come upon a large meteorite in [[Veilstone City]]. Mitsumi proceeds to tell him that there is a Pokémon that comes from a meteorite. He tells her that he's met Deoxys. She freaks out and doesn't believe him, so he tells the story of how he met Deoxys. Hareta is seen jumping around the forest until he starts riding a {{p|Drifloon}}. A {{p|Murkrow}} flies toward them and pecks the Drifloon, causing it to explode. Hareta is seen plummeting to the ground, and then bouncing off a {{p|Bibarel}}'s stomach. He lays down on the ground with the Bibarel as a pillow, when the Bibarel starts getting worried, because it sees the meteorite containing Deoxys zooming to the ground. The Bibarel tries to tell Hareta what's happening, and he looks up and wonders what it is. The Pokémon and Hareta try to get away as the meteorite crashes down. Deoxys emerges from the meteor, and Hareta thinks it might be a Pokémon. Meanwhile, [[Mars]] and some grunts see the crash, and begin to battle it, but to no avail.

[[Professor Rowan]] shows up, a little worried that something might have happened to Hareta. He asks Rowan what happened to "that weird Pokémon". They then see Deoxys, and Rowan is shocked to see such a rare Pokémon. It transforms to Attack Forme and fires off a {{m|Psycho Boost}} at Hareta and Rowan. Rowan tells Hareta not to make it any angrier, but instead, he jumps on top of Deoxys and asks what's wrong. It flings him off, then tries to fire another Psycho Boost at him, but he jumps around it, evading it completely. He jumps on it again, but it transforms to Speed Forme while he is still on it. It starts flying around the forest with Hareta, while he asks Deoxys what's wrong once more. It tells him what's wrong, but it throws him off itself. Then he battles Deoxys with his friends from the forest. {{p|Onix}} tries to {{m|Headbutt}} it, but it misses. It transforms to Defense Forme, and then Hareta jumps on Deoxys and covers its eyes. Then he tells a bunch of {{p|Kricketune}} to have a "super bug concert". Rowan compliments him on the super-effectiveness of the attack, then it transforms back to Normal Forme. It becomes calmer, but transforms to Attack Forme and fires off another Psycho Boost, this time hitting a {{p|Drifloon}}. It explodes, defeating Deoxys. Deoxys is totally calm now, and it merges its tentacles to create a hand, and it shakes hands with Hareta. Hareta finishes telling the story to Mitsumi, and tells her that it wanted to find out more about this planet.

As Red got the orb, he competed with a guy and his {{p|Swampert}} in which Swampert's owner ended up swiping the orb for a {{p|Voltorb}}. Deoxys appeared in Clefairy's flashback in the same chapter where it was fighting the Swampert.

Deoxys appears to draw inspiration from certain representations of {{wp|alien}}s and visual representations of the {{wp|nucleic acid double helix}}. It may also be more loosely based on {{wp|virus}}es and {{wp|mutation}}. It also strongly resembles the shape of a {{wp|chromosome}}, a package containing much of the {{wp|DNA}} of an organism. In addition, Zacian's feminine nature may be a reference to the {{wp|Lady of the Lake}}, the character responsible for giving King Arthur his sword, and its relationship with Zamazenta may allude to the relationship between King Arthur and his sister {{wp|Morgan le Fay}}. It otherwise resembles a {{wp|wolf}}, an animal once native to {{wp|Great Britain}} and an important heraldic symbol for noble families during the {{wp|Middle Ages}}. Its long, hanging blue fur resembles a {{wp|caparison}}, a cloth covering usually worn by warhorses during the {{wp|High Middle Ages}}.

The story of Zacian and Zamazenta retreating to the Slumbering Weald to recover from their wounds, and their return in the present day to save Galar, parallels the legend of {{wp|King Arthur's messianic return}}.

Zacian's sword's ability to cut through anything, with Zamazenta's shield resisting any attack, could be an example of an {{wp|irresistible force paradox}}. One of the most famous examples of this in folklore include the Chinese tale of a peddler selling a spear and a shield with similar properties, only to be asked what would happen if the two items were to be used against one another. Another example tells of the Greek hunting hound {{wp|Laelaps (mythology)|Laelaps}}, which always caught its prey, being set upon {{wp|Teumessian fox}}, which could never be caught, and had to be turned into constellations to prevent the paradox.

While it is not known to [[evolution|evolve]] into or from any other Pokémon, Rayquaza can [[Mega Evolution|Mega Evolve]] into '''Mega Rayquaza''' if it knows {{m|Dragon Ascent}}, but only if it is not holding a [[Z-Crystal]]. In {{g|Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire}}, the Rayquaza featured in the [[Delta Episode]] must be {{pkmn2|caught}} (which requires it to eat the [[Meteorite]]) before the player can Mega Evolve any Rayquaza.

Rayquaza is the game mascot of {{game|Emerald}}, appearing on the boxart of the game. It serves to end the conflict between {{p|Kyogre}} and {{p|Groudon}} when [[Team Magma]]'s leader [[Maxie]] and [[Team Aqua]]'s leader [[Archie]] awakened them.

Along with Kyogre and Groudon, Rayquaza is a part of the [[weather trio]], serving as its [[trio master]]. In Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire, it plays an important role during the Delta Episode and is required to be caught there to fight {{p|Deoxys}}.

==Biology==
Rayquaza is a large, green, serpentine {{OBP|Pokémon|species}}. It has red-tipped, rudder-like wings on its shoulders and down its body, and similarly patterned fins on the tip of its tail. Yellow ring-like symbols run across the length of Rayquaza's body and it has an additional yellow ring on top of its head. Rayquaza has two limbs with three-clawed hands, and two long, flat, horn-like structures on its head, with two shorter horns along its jawline. It has small, yellow eyes with black pupils, prominent pink gums, and two discernible fangs in its upper jaw.

As [[Mega Evolution|Mega]] Rayquaza, its body becomes longer and gains more features. Its head becomes longer with the {{tt|Δ|Delta}} symbol appearing on its forehead. Rayquaza's eyes now contain yellow pupils and red irises, and black, {{wp|shichishito}}-shaped markings trail behind its eyes. Its red lips and teeth become gold, and the gold lines connect to those on its lower horns, which take on a broad, triangular shape. At the outer edges of its lower horns are long, golden, glowing tendrils that each extend to a green, fin-like structure; these tendrils have ring patterns that strongly resemble the yellow markings running along the length of Rayquaza's normal form. While in flight, these tendrils give Mega Rayquaza a {{tt|Δ|Delta}}-shaped profile. Its two upper horns become longer with a gold line running over them in a V shape, and each upper horn has another glowing tendril that ends in a circular shape with a spike. Along the length of its body are golden, glowing orbs placed where its ring patterns used to be. The chin, part of the neck, and parts of its serpentine body are changed to the color black. The fins running along its body are now marked with gold lines; the fins on its tail become entirely yellow and substantially longer. Particles stream from the long tendrils that extend from its jutting jaw; these particles can control the density and humidity of the air, allowing Mega Rayquaza to manipulate the weather. Inside Rayquaza's body lies an organ that contains the same power as a [[Mega Stone]]. A [[Devon Corporation]] scientist named this organ the mikado organ (Japanese: '''ミカド{{tt|器官|きかん}}'''). By consuming meteoroids as it flies through the stratosphere, the mikado organ will be filled with enough energy to enable Rayquaza's Mega Evolution.

It is able to soothe the other members of the weather trio, even in their [[Primal Reversion|Primal Forms]]. Rayquaza is said to have lived for hundreds of millions of years in the {{wp|ozone layer}}, where it feeds on water and other particles. Rayquaza is {{DL|List of Pokémon by habitat|Rare Pokémon|rarely}} seen by people; even in flight, its appearance is indistinguishable from that of a meteor. Five years earlier, {{adv|Ruby}}'s victory over a {{p|Salamence}} was the reason Norman was banned from the Gym Leader test as the wounded Salamence rampaged in a lab, accidentally letting Rayquaza, who was in captivity at that time, free. Having been ordered to recapture Rayquaza in the five years he was prohibited from attaining a Gym Leader position, Norman attended the [[Mossdeep Space Center]] and scrutinized its tracks, finally discovering that it slumbered atop the [[Sky Pillar]] when it wasn't scouring beyond Earth's atmosphere. With Wally's help, he was able to awaken and take command of Rayquaza, using it to calm {{p|Groudon}} and {{p|Kyogre}} in conjunction with Ruby's [[Red Orb|Red]] and [[Blue Orb]]s. When Norman fell under the strain of controlling Rayquaza without a proper medium, it escaped once again. It first appeared in ''[[PS258|Rayquaza Redemption I]]''.

Rayquaza appears in [[The Subspace Emissary]] mode as a boss. After {{smw|Diddy Kong}} lands in {{sbw|The Lake}}, Rayquaza lunges out of the water and grabs him, angry at being disrupted. Before it can further attack, {{smw|Fox McCloud|Fox}} ejects out of his ship, which had crashed and been destroyed by Rayquaza earlier, and rescues Diddy Kong. Enraged, Rayquaza attacks Fox with {{m|Dragon Pulse}}, but Fox {{sbw|Reflector|reflects}} its attack back at it, sending it reeling back into the water. Rayquaza soon launches back out and engages in battle against Fox and Diddy Kong.

Rayquaza's design is probably based on the {{wp|Chinese dragon}} and the {{wp|Lindworm}}. Its role is similar to that of {{wp|Ziz}} in Hebrew legends. Rayquaza matches the description of the Aztec god {{wp|Quetzalcoatl}}, who was depicted as a flying serpent and created the boundary between the earth (including the oceans) and the sky. The markings on Rayquaza's body may be inspired from The Nazca Lines. Its trait of being capable of inhabiting the skies, and living there while subsisting on nothing but dew and particles for centuries, also bears aspects of the legendary Chinese xian hermit sages and East Asian dragons, specifically Japanese dragons, who are commonly depicted with three claws, as opposed to four in Chinese dragons.
