A '''badge''' (Japanese: '''バッジ''' ''badge'') is an item which denotes a [[Pokémon Trainer]] as having defeated a [[Gym Leader]]. Trainers need to collect a certain number of [[gym]] badges in order to qualify for a region's [[Pokémon League]]. Young Trainers usually begin their initial Pokémon journey by traveling from city to city in order to collect them. Badges are small enough to fit easily between one's thumb and index finger and can be pinned to a shirt or kept in a badge case.

In the games, Badges affect a {{OBP|Pokémon|species}}'s behavior. A symbol of competence on the Trainer's part, badges force [[trade]]d Pokémon under a certain [[level]] to obey. Additionally, Trainers cannot have a Pokémon use an [[HM]] move outside battle without the appropriate badge. Also, beginning in [[Generation IV]], the number of badges a Trainer possesses affects the items that various [[Poké Mart]]s will sell. The more badges, the more expensive and rare items become available for purchase.

===Sinnoh League===
When badges are touched in the games, they play a single note, and will make a C major scale when all eight are collected. When a player rubs the stylus across them numerous times to polish them (they gradually tarnish), they will begin to shine. This process can be continued until four sparkles are visible. The notes are also the most clearly defined and accurately tuned when there are four sparkles.

Unlike previous generations, these badges apparently do not affect stats; if they do, no one informs the player of this fact. Furthermore, it is the number of badges that determines which Pokémon obey the Trainer, rather than the badges themselves (this distinction is important owing to the fact that the order of obtaining the Cobble, Fen, and Relic Badges can differ). For every second badge the maximum level of obeying Pokémon increases (2 badges - Level 30; 4 badges - Level 50; 6 badges - Level 70; 8 badges - Level 100). The number of badges collected also affects what the player can purchase in [[Poké Mart]]s.

==In the anime==
The {{pkmn|anime}} has a few different rules for badges than in the games. Primarily, badges seem to do nothing beside signify the defeat of a given Gym Leader. A Pokémon may choose not to obey its Trainer even if he or she has gained all eight badges, such as [[Ash's Charizard]].

Gym Leaders are quite lenient about giving out badges in the anime. Additionally, Trainers do not necessarily have to win a battle with the Gym Leader in order to earn a badge. The Orange Crew, for example, all have entire Gym matches devoted to unconventional battling styles and [[Ash Ketchum]] was awarded several badges because of his kind heart and determination.

Participation in the [[Indigo Plateau Conference]] yields a final Indigo League badge at the closing ceremony. It is larger, however, and square shaped.

[[Pokémon Tech]], a boarding school which educates Pokémon Trainers, is an expensive school for children of wealthy families. Moving up a grade in Pokémon Tech is the equivalent of winning two Gym badges. Upon graduation, students may immediately apply for entry in the Pokémon League.

Trainers can take a three-part test that awards a single badge which allows entry into the Pokémon League, as seen in ''[[EP056|The Ultimate Test]].'' The test is called the Pokémon League Admissions Exam. It is convenient for people whose age, health, or work keeps them from traveling around to collect badges.

It's also implied in the anime that a Gym Badge serves as a primary ID for a Gym Leader (and probably a secondary ID for a Trainer), as Brock used his Boulder Badge to identify himself in order to clear his name from any accusations of stealing parts from a machine shop in Cerulean City.

So far, Ash Ketchum has only obtained badges that are available in the games, with the notable exception of those he obtained in the Orange Archipelago. Several unknown badges can be seen at the beginning of ''[[EP013|Mystery at the Lighthouse]]'', while many Trainers Ash has met have had badges that differ from those that are obtainable in the games. This suggests that there are gyms in locations which do not appear in the games and therefore more than eight gyms in each region. Trainers with badges not seen in the games include:

===Gary===
[[Gary Oak]] acquired more than the standard eight Kanto League badges, thus leading to confusion as to whether or not there is an infinite number of badges that can be given out in a given region. By ''[[EP063|The Battle of the Badge]]'', he is shown to have at least ten badges, only three of which correspond to known Kanto league badges, suggesting there are at least fifteen gyms in Kanto. This would, therefore, provide one gym for each of the (at the time) fifteen types. Among these may include the [[Fighting Dojo]], a gym shown to be defunct by {{game|Red and Blue|s}}.

===Otoshi===
In addition, before Ash competes in the Indigo League, a Trainer named [[Otoshi]] is shown in the episode ''[[EP073|Bad to the Bone]]''; he owns eight badges, but only shares four in common with Ash; later in the episode another Trainer is seen with eight other completely different badges altogether. In total, Ash, Gary, Otoshi and the other Trainer display 27 different types of badges, so there must be at least this number of gyms in Kanto at the time, assuming they are all from the same region.

On closer inspection, Otoshi's badges each look somewhat similar to Ash's badges and only differ in size and shape. Similarly, what can be identified as a Soul Badge, Thunder Badge, Marsh Badge, and Volcano Badge slide across the screen every time his Marowak knocks out a Pokémon in his flashback. His badges are in this order from upper-left to bottom-right: Thunder, ? (Rainbow), Cascade, Volcano, Marsh, Soul, Boulder, and Earth. This hints that there may be different varieties of the same badge.

Later, during Ash's Johto League challenge, he is given what is referred to in the show as the "{{DL|List of key items in Generation II|Silver Wing}} Badge"; however, this is not an official gym badge and is not recognized in the games as a badge at all, but rather a [[key item]] used to make {{p|Lugia}} appear in the [[Whirl Islands]].

===Morrison===
At the Hoenn Pokémon League Championship in ''[[AG126|Saved by the Beldum!]]'', [[Morrison]] is shown to have an eighth badge different from Ash's, suggesting that there are at least nine gyms in Hoenn.

===Mismagius===
In {{Ash}}'s dream in ''[[DP043|Malice in Wonderland]]'', Ash has many badges that haven't been on-screen before, as well as some older badges. Considering it was only a dream, it is probable that some of the badges seen don't exist at all.

===Barry===
In ''[[DP101|Barry's Busting Out All Over!]]'', it shows that {{an|Barry}} has three badges. While the Forest Badge and the Mine Badge are no different, Barry has a third badge that is different from the eight Sinnoh badges. In ''[[DP163|Fighting Ire with Fire!]]'', Barry was revealed to have obtained eight badges already, two more of which are different. This could imply that there are at least eleven Gyms in Sinnoh. The possibility of more Sinnoh Gyms is further supported by something [[Tower Tycoon Palmer]] says to Ash in ''[[DP141|Challenging a Towering Figure!]]''. After the Twinleaf Festival is coming to a close, and Ash and the gang prepares to depart, Palmer asks Ash about the Pokémon League. Ash says that he needs just one last badge. Palmer then suggests (or something to that effect) that Ash choose Sunyshore to be his final badge, as if there were other possible choices. The same unknown red badge that Barry owns is shown at the end of ''[[DP182|An Old Family Blend!]]''.

===Nando===
In ''[[DP174|Last Call, First Round!]]'' it is revealed that [[Nando]] has acquired seven badges. Nando has two badges that are the same as two of Barry's unknown badges.

==In the Pokémon Adventures manga==
In [[Pokémon Adventures]], badges have mystical and mysterious qualities that can somehow increase the power of the Pokémon owned by the Trainer who wields the badges, just as the Boulder Badge increases the Pokémon's Attack stat in the games. In addition, badges that don't allow higher leveled Pokémon to obey, such as the Soul Badge, do indeed allow the wearer to control even legendary Pokémon such as {{p|Articuno}}.

It is not known what sort of material badges are made of, but it has been confirmed that the Gym Leaders each own a badge made of different material than the kind given out to normal trainers, as that is how the [[Masked Man]]'s identity was narrowed down to among the 16 known Gym Leaders when [[Aibo]] scraped off a part of his hidden badge with its {{m|Scratch}} attack.

[[Team Rocket]] used seven Kanto Gym badges to power a machine that combined {{p|Articuno}}, {{p|Zapdos}} and {{p|Moltres}} into [[Zapmolcuno|a single beast]]. The machine also had a secret slot for the Earth Badge, which Lance manipulated to further his own goals by turning [[Cerise Island]] into a giant badge energy amplifier to fuel the legendary {{p|Lugia}} with.

Badges are not required to enter the Pokémon League tournament; however, without eight badges corresponding to their home region, a Trainer must battle their way in to qualify for the finals.

==In the Electric Tale of Pikachu manga==
In the [[Electric Tale of Pikachu]], badges work in a way similar to the anime, however, there are some minor differences. All badges have the Pokémon League logo printed on them.

In addition, Pokémon Trainers are organized by class, much like Pokémon Tech "Class D", "Class C" and so forth. Badges increase the the rank of the Trainer who owns them. Ash once believed that he could increase his rank by capturing rare wild Pokémon, however this was not the case.

I noticed that in the games, Pikachu can only be found "in the wild" in the Kanto Region. In GSC, Pikachu was only on Route 2 in Kanto, in RSE, it was only in the Safari Zone, which contained only "imported" Pokemon (that is, no Generation III Pokemon), and in DP, it's only in the Trophy Garden, a place that's basically confirmed to be importing Pokemon from other regions.

These "coincidences" lead me to believe that Pikachu is native to the Kanto Region, and its appearance everywhere else is due to humans bringing them to other locals.

The only fossil there is Aerodactyl, which is suitably found in an ancient area, not that fossils are that special any more.

The TCG has a card called Flying Pikachu. The Pikachu has balloons tied around it, so that it could fly. Its attacks are Thundershock and Fly.

Old Glitch with the Yellow Pikachu. Use it in one of the two Stadiums through all eight battles in one of the cups and it can learn Surf. I personally have never been able to do it because I could never get my pika high enough to battle in the Cup, but I hear it can be done. Only method I know of. ==Geography==
To get on the S.S. Anne in the [[Pokémon games|games]], players must first obtain an [[S.S. Ticket]] by helping out [[Bill]].

This ship contains many [[Pokémon Trainer]]s, including many [[Gentleman|Gentlemen]] and [[Sailor]]s. In [[Generation III]], in one room on the first floor, a lady will restoring all {{obp|Pokémon|species}} on hand to full health. Before reaching the captain's cabin, {{player|players}} will encounter {{ga|Blue}} and must battle him.

With the rival defeated again, the player will be able to enter the Captain's quarters, where they will find him seasick. By choosing to help him by giving him a backrub, players will be able to get {{HM|01|Cut}}.

Once the captain is healed, the S.S. Anne will sail away the moment player exits the ship. Although it is said to return once a year, none of the games in which it appears have a [[time]] system capable of measuring this, and the ship will not be seen again. The only way in which one can get the ship to remain is by losing a battle and [[black out|blacking out]], thus returning to the [[Pokémon Center]] (or using a [[#Rumors|Generation I glitch]]).

In the [[Pokémon Diamond and Pearl beta|programming code of Diamond and Pearl]], an [[item]] called "S.S. Ticket" has been found. According to its in-bag description, it is a "ticket for the Luxury Liner S.S. Anne," which means that S.S. Anne was possibly meant to reappear in [[Sinnoh]] or that [[Pokémon Diamond and Pearl versions|Diamond and Pearl]] were built off of a heavily modified Generation III game engine.

Anne's port]], which seems to serve no evident purpose except as scenery. With scenery being very sparse in the [[Generation I]] games, and this being one of the few sprites with no other purpose than to exist in one spot, fans began speculating that another purpose existed for this truck, and that it could perhaps be moved with {{m|Strength}}. Thus, a popular rumor sprang up that a [[Poké Ball]] containing {{p|Mew}} could be found underneath it. Anne leaving. [[Player character|Players]] have found ways around this through [[glitch|glitches]], or by trading a Pokémon knowing {{m|Cut}} to other games which did not have the [[HM]]. This rumor was proven false shortly after it was announced.

The ship will not set sail if the [[Player character|player]] challenges a {{pkmn|Trainer}} after obtaining the move {{m|Cut}}, and loses the battle. The {{player}} would be teleported to the last [[Pokémon Center]] visited, and the ship would not leave the dock, making it accessible later in the game when the player had obtained {{m|Strength}} and {{m|Surf}}. In the [[Generation III]] remakes of Red and Green, the truck is still present, however, there is actually something of a point to get to it this time around. On its pier, if the player walks down a bit, they can find a {{DL|Status ailment healing item|Lava Cookie}}, normally unavailable until [[Sevii Islands|later in the game]]. This could possibly have been put into the game as a reference to the old rumors.

After the S.S. Anne leaves Vermilion City, it never returns. However, some players spread another rumor about it in the Generation I games; by defeating the [[Elite Four]] 365 times, players would supposedly make the ship return with more powerful opponents on board. This was supported by an NPC in Red and Blue explaining that the ship was a luxury liner for trainers that visited Vermilion once a year. However, there was no way to make time pass in Red and Blue, so this was obviously just a hoax to get people to try something extremely tedious.

{{Ash}}, [[Misty]] and [[Brock]] boarded the ship after two schoolgirls, who were actually [[Jessie]] and [[James]] in disguise, offered them free tickets. This was part of a [[Team Rocket]] plot to steal the {{obp|Pokémon|species}} of all {{pkmn|Trainer}}s on board. However, Ash and his friends enjoyed the St. Anne, which provided large amounts of food for people on board and allowed [[Pokémon battle]]s below deck. While on board, James was swindled by the [[Magikarp Salesman]] into buying a [[List of Pokémon temporarily owned by Team Rocket#Gyarados|Magikarp]] in a gold-plated [[Poké Ball]], and Ash traded his {{AP|Butterfree}} to a Gentleman for a {{AP|Raticate}}.

Out on the open ocean, Team Rocket, including Jessie, James, {{MTR}}, and a number of [[Team Rocket Grunt]]s began taking the Pokémon of everyone else on board the St. Anne by force. Ash led a counterattack against the Rockets, leading to a large battle and many of the members of Team Rocket being 'blasted off' through the side of the ship.

Afterwards, the St. Anne started taking on water, and the passengers had to be evacuated. Ash delayed evacuating to trade back the Raticate for his Butterfree, and while rushing to escape the St. Anne jerked and knocked out Ash, his friends, and the Rocket trio. When they awoke, the St. Anne was upside down and underwater, balancing on a {{wp|seamount}}.

The two groups fought at first, but Misty took charge and began directing all of them in an emergency escape plan before the ship fell into the depths of the sea floor. Since the ship was upside down, they would need to escape through the thinnest point in its {{wp|hull (watercraft)|hull}}, which Misty knew was in the engine room, having built a model of the ship herself. They made their way through the ship to this point, and then Ash ordered his {{AP|Charmander|Charizard}} to burn a hole in the hull. With the help of {{AP|Squirtle}}, {{TP|Misty|Goldeen}} and {{TP|Misty|Starmie}}, Ash and his friends were able to swim to safety, while Team Rocket nearly drowned since all they had to rely on was James's Magikarp, which could only {{m|Splash}} around on the floor.

Once everyone was off-board, the St. Anne's balance tilted, and it fell off the seamount, down towards the {{wp|abyssal zone|abyss}}, never to be seen again.

{{Ash}} says, "Look at all the different Pokémon! This has to be the Safari Zone!" Suddenly, Ash sees a {{p|Chansey}} stick its head up and he gets ready to throw a [[Poké Ball]]; however, a [[Officer Jenny|Ranger Jenny]] pops up with a gun and arrests Ash for Pokémon poaching. She takes them back to the station and explains about the Pokémon Preservation Area where it's illegal to catch Pokémon.

Ash says he didn't know, so Jenny lets them off with a warning. Immediately after, shes sees a red dot on her radar, saying that there are more poachers; Ash offers to help. Jenny thanks him, and the whole group travels to the location by jeep. They drive up to find [[Team Rocket]] trying to capture all the {{p|Kangaskhan}}. Ash looks at his [[Pokédex]], which says the Kangaskhan charge until they feel their young are out of danger. Team Rocket fires a rocket and scares all the Kangaskhan, making them charge towards the jeep. The group manages to escape, but Team Rocket traps all the Kangaskhan in a net.

Jessie throws a Poké Ball and it is hit by a boomerang; suddenly, a kid begins to yell, cutting the net and setting them free. The Kangaskhan attack Team Rocket, sending them blasting off.

The kid jumps into the pouch of the biggest Kangaskhan. A helicopter soon lands and two parents come out, saying they heard a report of their missing kid in the area. They all go back to the station and they hear that Tommy, or Tommo, is living in the area. Ash, Brock, Misty, and Pikachu leave the jeep and go to look around and find the infant Kangaskhan that was supposed to be where Tommy went; they give it a {{DL|Potion|Super Potion}}.

The kid thinks they are hurting it, so he jumps down. He asks Misty. "You people or Pokémon?" Misty punches him and says that they are people. The parents run over and talk to Tommy, and his father smacks Tommy with a piece of wood hoping it knocks the memory of Tommy's parents back into his head. He remembers his mom; his father opens his shirt and Misty smacks the father with a piece of wood, saying, "One memory at a time!" Jenny rushes back because of poachers, so Tommy runs to the Kangaskhan.

They find a giant Kangaskhan, which is actually a machine built by Team Rocket. It pretends to be injured; the other Kangaskhan go to help, but are stopped by the leader. However, they go anyway, and all are hit by tranquilizers; the leader goes to hurt Team Rocket but is hit as well.

Ash then brings out his Pokémon: {{AP|Bulbasaur}} uses {{m|Vine Whip}} and {{AP|Squirtle}} tries {{m|Skull Bash}}, which does not work. Then Team Rocket powers up, but the Kangaskhan break
free. Pikachu and Charmander come out while Tommy throws his boomerang, knocking the gasoline out, and Charmander's fire sets it ablaze. The Kangaskhan robot is set on fire, though it still works.

Suddenly, the helicopter comes in and crashes into the mechanical Kangaskhan; it explodes, and Team Rocket blasts off again. Tommy thinks his parents are dead, but they get up. They are revealed to be wearing similar things as Tommy and they say they will join Tommy.

The episode ends with Tommy, his parents, and an infant Kangaskhan in the leader's pouch, with Ash and his friends leaving.

I was wondering if you could give a little more detail about the staff discussion that lead to the change from ''SPECIAL'' to ''Adventures'', ''PPP'' to ''MPJ'', switched Blue and Green, etc.. Was it only related to those specific issues, or more generally to the use of English names on the English project? 
Despite the timing, I’m less interested in the argument caused by my recent rash and unfortunate actions( although it would disingenuous to suggest that I haven’t considered the relationship between that and my question) and more curious about the use of in-article terminology. Specifically, I’m wondering about the use in prose, headers, and {{tt|article titles|list titles, particularly}} of the term “Round” for the smaller subdivisions of ''PA'' Chapters. It makes sense in Japanese where most of them are named “{{tt|VS[Pokémon]|e.g. Round 1 VSミュウ, Round 34 VSミュウツー（前編)}}”, but those are not the names in the Viz translations, nor( most of) the Chuang Yi volumes. Accordingly, CY and the Viz 1st editions call them Chapters( which admittedly could be confusing), while the Viz reprints call them {{tt|Adventures|e.g., ADVENTURE 001: A Glimpse of the Glow, ADVENTURE 34: And Mewtwo Too!?}}. I don’t think it makes sense to keep calling them rounds, especially in light of the shift towards English. 
Is there any opinion or consensus from the aforementioned discussion that would have a bearing on that? I intend to bring it up in the Project discussion soon but I would like to know the hard facts about the staff’s recent decision going in. I’m asking you specifically because you gave the most helpful answer to my question there about the reasons for the sudden policy reversal. :Well, that's a good question... But I'll have to discuss it with CoolPikachu and our Editorial Board. Generally - yes, we're an English wiki, and we prefer English names, with the sole exception of epicodes (PS001 will not be changes to PA001. And yes, there's a reason for that, but I won't go into it now). We can't use chapters, because the story arcs are referred to as chapters in Adventures. We for ADVENTURE 001... Well, a lot of manga series use names like that for their chapters (I can think of [[Mezase!! Card Master]] and [[Pocket Monsters Platinum: Aim to Be Battle King!!]] which use "BATTLE 1", [[Pokémon Get da ze!]] which uses "GET 1"). We still prefer chapters for consistency, but again, we can't use chapters in Adventures. Hi, I noticed you replaced my list of Pokémon with a redirect. I hadn't seen the page [[List of Pokémon by anime debut]], as it wasn't linked from [[List of Pokémon]], but I have added it there now. However there are a couple of sortability problems with this page, as:

* Page is split into sections so is not globally sortable.
* Page does not place movies in their proper place within the order.

(We know that the symbol in question--a star--indicates Viridian due to previous episodes.) It can also be noted that the Jennys of the Orange Archipelago are outfitted with uniforms of a distinctly lighter blue, almost white in color. I was re-watching some of the older episodes, and I think we can learn in "In The Pink" about some pokemon's diet. In the episode, it is said that the pinkan berry gives a pokemon a pink coloring. Later, we see pokemon such as diglett, which have an unknown diet, with the pink coloring. Shouldn't it be added to all the pink pokemon's diet information that they eat fruit?
