Synopsis
Synopsis cleanup
The Pokémon Contest is rapidly approaching, and May is training hard for it. She thinks about how she cannot wait to battle Drew, and runs off to train with her Beautifly, leaving her Torchic with the others. Torchic feels left out and upset as it watches its Trainer running off.

Ash, Brock, Max and all their Pokémon are eating when Max jumps up. He is annoyed because May keeps leaving Torchic alone; it seems like she does not care about Torchic anymore, only Beautifly. Ash explains that it is OK, Torchic will always be special to May because it was her first Pokémon. Max wants to know what Brock's first Pokémon was and Brock remembers back to his tenth birthday when he woke up and found an Onix leaning into his room with a red ribbon around its neck. He and his father (Flint) sat on Onix's head and watched the sunrise. Max imagines the Pokémon he will have when he becomes a Pokémon Trainer, thinking that his father could give him anything, even a Slakoth. In the imagination bubble, Slakoth falls on top of Max and squashes him.

Nurse Joy comes by on her way to do her rounds of the Pokémon, and Brock grabs her and insists on coming with her (even when she says she does not need help). Joy suggests that they all come along to check on the Pokémon. She sees Mudkip, Torchic and Treecko all eating, and is surprised at their great condition, telling the gang that there is a new Trainer coming to the Pokémon Center to choose a Starter Pokémon. The gang follow Joy to another room, where Max is allowed to release the Pokémon from their Poké Balls. The Torchic is in a fighting mood; the Mudkip bursts into tears and is comforted by Brock's Mudkip, while the Treecko clasps its hands together and simpers (apparently a female, due to its interest in Ash's Treecko and the way it holds a flower in its mouth as compared to Ash's Treecko holding a twig). Max gets very excited when saying "Treecko, I choose you!" because it is something he always wanted to say.

A video call from a rather panicked May comes in. She explains that there is a Wailord beached where she is training, and Nurse Joy runs off to help it, telling the kids to look after the three starters and not let them go outside because they are not used to it. Brock follows her. Team Rocket are standing outside the window and hear about the Wailord. They decide they want to catch it.

The Pokémon Center's Torchic runs off towards the outside. It seems rather strong; every time one of Ash's or Brock's Pokémon (or May's Torchic) tries to stop it, it attacks them and keeps going, even Corphish. Corphish tries to attack it but Ash stops it from hurting the smaller Pokémon. Pikachu stops it momentarily with its lightning cheeks, but it pulls a tears-in-its-eyes trick and Pikachu relaxes and lets down its guard, allowing the PC Torchic to run by again. It makes it outside and Corphish chases it, attacking it to make it stop. Accidentally, the Torchic evolves into a Combusken. Ash and Max are less than amused. They panic.

Ash and Max decide that the only thing to do is to substitute May's Torchic for the evolved one, and try to stop the Trainer from choosing it. They flinch as they imagine what May would do if she caught them, so they just have to keep her away.

It turns out that the Wailord will be fine, and it just needs to rest a bit. May and Joy return to the Pokémon Center. May sits down and Max brings her a cup of tea, asking her if she needs anything else. She starts to get a bit suspicious and asks where her Torchic is. Max freaks slightly and says it is outside. She heads for the door to go find it. Max tries to stop her and she gets really suspicious.

Meanwhile, on the other side of the same door, Stephanie, the young Trainer, is inspecting the Starter Pokémon with her father. She is very indecisive and cannot choose between them. She stops in front of Torchic and says that she chooses it, but Ash says "Forget it!" She does not quite hear him and Ash quickly covers up by saying that Torchic is a bad choice, because it is smelly and noisy and disobedient etc. There is a banging noise and Nurse Joy does not know what it is, but Ash says it is just the wind. May comes into the room, and her Torchic sees her and runs to her. She hugs it and demands to know what is going on. This is when Combusken, who Ash and Max hid in a cupboard, bursts out. Nurse Joy is surprised at this and Ash and Max explain what happened.

They look out the window and see Wailord floating in the sky, high above them, in a sling with the Team Rocket "R" on them. They run outside and saw Team Rocket, in their balloon, reciting their motto. Then, Combusken jumps up and attacks the balloon. The ropes holding the Wailord are cut and it falls into the sea. Pikachu attacks Team Rocket and they blast off before falling down again.

Nurse Joy tells Stephanie that Combusken probably is not the best choice for a beginner, so she chooses Mudkip. Treecko gets upset and starts to cry. Stephanie's father is touched and and gets upset too, and asks if it is too late for him to have Treecko and become a Trainer. The others assure him that it is fine, so Mudkip and Treecko prepare for a new life on the road with their new Trainers.
Trivia
*The English dub is based on the phrase "having a whale of a time"
* Ash telling Brock that his father sounds cool, receives the reply "I guess..." This unenthusiastic response is presumably related to the fact that his father abandoned his family.
* The Hoenn starter Pokémon featured in this episode seemed to have the opposite personalities of the main characters' Hoenn starters. The Treecko was peaceful, the Torchic was tough, and the Mudkip was cowardly.
* This was the last episode to air before Jirachi: Wish Maker debuted in Japanese theaters.
* Exactly 100 episodes later (initially 101, due to the canceled episode), Brock would return to the Pewter Gym to see his family and Brock. This would also be the last time he would see his Onix before it evolved into a Steelix prior to Grating Spaces.
*The Treecko in this episode seemed to have a bit of a crush on Ash's Treecko and even mimicked it by holding a flower in its mouth.
*When Ash and Max think about what will happen if they swap May's Torchic for the Combusken, Max says "Congratulations, May! Your Torchic evolved into Combusken!" This is a reference to the message displayed when a Pokémon evolves in the games.
Sandshrew (Japanese: サンド Sand) is a Ground Pokémon.

It evolves into Sandslash starting at level 22.

Biology
Physiology
Sandshrew is a ground-dwelling pholidote notable for its defensive capabilities. Its body is mostly covered in a dry, tough hide which is colored to blend in with the sands of the desert. It can curl into a tight ball about the same size as a basketball to protect its soft underbelly. Its primary weapon is the small but sharp claws on its paws, which are also useful for burrowing and can sometimes be poisoned.
Gender differences
None.
Special abilities
Sandshrew's special abilities are extremely limited compared to other Pokémon. It has a greater control over the ground and sand than the average Pokémon, mostly derived from adaptation to its habitat.

Behavior
In the wild, Sandshrew are mostly defensive by nature. They spend much of their time hidden underground in their burrows and will kick up sand or curl into a ball to escape predators. They may venture out to hunt, taking advantage of the desert sands to hide themselves.

However, with the help of a Trainer, a Sandshrew can become bolder and much more daring, and can even be trained to swim despite the fact that they are weakened by the water. They are still fond of curling up, though, even if not for defense.

Habitat
Sandshrew are adapted to dry, arid areas. Thus, they can be commonly found in deserts and grasslands, and sometimes in river valleys or the upper levels of caves as well. Wherever they are, they live underground in burrows.

Diet
Pokémon food
Sandshrew do not require a lot of water, due to a very efficient system of staying hydrated with minimal moisture. They hunt for prey in the wild.

Major appearances
Sandshrew was first featured in The Path to the Pokémon League. It was owned by a Pokémon Trainer named A.J.. Despite A.J.'s seemly barbaric training methods (e.g. using a whip, training in a pool), it was very loyal to him.

Mira enlisted Ash and his friends to help her retrieve her Sandshrew that is lost at the bottom of an artificial lake created by a dammed river in Sandshrew's Locker!.

Minor appearances
Ash Ketchum and Pikachu pass three Sandshrew in Pokémon, I Choose You! while being chased by a flock of wild Spearow.

An ailing Sandshrew is seen briefly near the beginning of Clefairy and the Moon Stone.

A Sandshrew was one of the Pokémon that played Hide-n-Seek in Pikachu's PikaBoo. Sandshrew hid in front of a brick wall.

A Sandshrew was used by one of the students of the Pokémon Trainer's School in Gonna Rule The School!.

It also appeared in Pokémon Ranger and the Kidnapped Riolu! Part One.

A Sandshrew appeared in Camping It Up!.

A Sandshrew was also seen at the Shelter Town's Pokémon Center in Battling a Cute Drama!.
Trivia
*Sandshrew is the first Ground Pokémon in National Pokédex order.
*Sandshrew and Sandslash share the same species name with Rattata, Raticate, Pikachu, and Raichu. They are all known as the Mouse Pokémon, though Rattata and Raticate have also been called the Rat Pokémon.
* Although Sandshrew was introduced in Generation I as a pure Ground, it could not learn any Ground-type attacks via level-up until Generation III.
* Sandshrew gets Rock Slide and Swords Dance as egg moves, despite it being compatible with the TMs for aforementioned moves.
Origin
Though its design appears to be inspired by armadillos, its actual inspiration was the pangolin, which is a scaly-anteater by another name. It curls up into a ball, has sharp claws, and lives in desert regions.
Name origin
Sandshrew's name is a combination of sand and shrew, a small rodent-like mammal. Its Japanese name simply refers to sand.
Synopsis
Ash and Paul are still in the middle of their full battle, both sides down one Pokémon. Ash's Pikachu faces off against Paul's powerful Paul. Ash warns Pikachu not to let its guard down. Dawn, who is on the sidelines with Brock, Reggie and her Dawn (as well as Jessie, James and MTR in disguise manning the scoreboard), looks up Magmortar in her Pokédex. Dawn wonders why Paul did not counter with a Ground Pokémon, but Brock suggests that it wouldn't have mattered because Ash could simply switch with Buizel at any time. Reggie adds that Paul is not only thinking about type, and as the battle goes on they would find out.

Ash orders Pikachu to use Quick Attack, which successfully connects and knocks Magmortar backwards, but quickly recovers. However, once Pikachu lands, it is immediately surrounded by fire. Dawn wonders how Pikachu was hurt when Magmortar did not use an attack, and Brock explains that Magmortar has the Flame Body ability, which has a chance of burn an opponent if it makes physical contact, as a result of Pikachu's Quick Attack. Ash asks Pikachu if it wants to continue, and Pikachu, desperate to help defeat Paul, agrees. Ash thanks Pikachu and commands a Thunderbolt, and Paul responds by ordering a Flamethrower. Magmortar fires the Flamethrower from its massive bazooka-like arms and it connects with Thunderbolt, causing a massive explosion. Ash then has Pikachu use Volt Tackle, and Pikachu heads straight towards Magmortar. Paul commands Magmortar to use Rock Tomb, and Magmortar starts to fire purple energy which turns into rocks when they hit the ground. Pikachu, forced to run straight due to the Volt Tackle, smashes head-first into the rocks which causes Volt Tackle to fail and throws Pikachu back, where it continues to suffer from its burn. Paul then commands Magmortar to use Smog, Magmortar releasing a poisonous cloud towards Pikachu. Ash commands Pikachu to use the Counter Shield technique which they developed for the Gym battle against Fantina, and Pikachu rolls on its back while releasing electricity, successfully countering the Smog, to which Paul is shocked and Team Rocket amazed. Reggie is impressed by the move and Brock explained that Ash developed it as a means to both attack and defend at the same time. Pikachu is then hurt by its burn again. Reggie knows that this is bad and that the longer that Pikachu carries on the greater the disadvantage it's in. Paul orders Magmortar to use Flamethrower. Ash tells Pikachu to jump and use Iron Tail from above. Pikachu jumps out of the Flamethrower's path and successfully hits Magmortar across the head with Iron Tail, but Magmortar is still ok and Pikachu once again takes damage from the burn. Ash then recalls Pikachu for some rest after battling so hard.

Ash decides to use type-advantage against Magmortar, sending out Buizel and ordering an Aqua Jet. The attack hits directly on the chest, sending Magmortar reeling back but it's still able to carry on. Ash then follows the successful move up with Water Pulse, however Paul orders another Rock Tomb, and Magmortar creates a wall of rocks which protects itself from the Water Pulse. However, Ash knows that it won't stand against a Water attack and orders Aqua Jet. Buizel smashes through the rocks, only to find Magmortar gone. Ash and Buizel don't know where Magmortar is, and Buizel looks up to see Magmortar release another Smog, which hits Buizel and poisons the Pokémon, causing Buizel to reel in pain. Brock realizes that Rock Tomb was used to stop Buizel from seeing what Magmortar was up to. Magmortar lands and Paul recalls it, sending out Paul. Ash orders Water Gun, but Paul orders a Hammer Arm, which successfully counters the attack. Ash wonders how it managed to counter Water Gun. Paul then orders Bulk Up which increases Ursaring's strength and defense. Ash soesn't care about this and tells Buizel to use Aqua Jet while Paul orders Ursaring to use Slash. Ursaring, after resisting Aqua Jet, hits Buizel with its sharp claws, sending Buizel to the ground. Ursaring uses Focus Blast, and Ash responds by having Buizel use Counter Shield which causes the Focus Blast to backfire onto Ursaring. Ash asks Paul if he likes the Counter Shield and that Pikachu isn't the only one who can use it, to which Paul says nothing. Ash then orders a SonicBoom, and Paul tells Ursaring to use Hammer Arm. Ursaring runs through the SonicBoom and lands a direct hit on Buizel, smashing him to the ground. Ash prepares to recall Buizel, but Buizel wants to stay in the battle, so Ash allows it to. Buizel launches another Aqua Jet, but Ursaring hits Buizel head-on with another Focus Blast, knocking Buizel out of the battle. Dawn felt very sorry for Buizel, but Reggie says that Buizel was eliminated because of Ash's poor judgement and Brock adds that he should have recalled Buizel before the Focus Blast.

Ash then sends out Staraptor, launching Aerial Ace. Paul orders another Hammer Arm, but Staraptor dodges it and scores a clean hit with Aerial Ace. Paul orders Focus Blast, which hits Staraptor in mid-air, but not critically damaging it. Ash orders Staraptor to use Close Combat, but Ursaring's Slash attack stops Staraptor before it can get close enough to attack. Ursaring finishes Staraptor off with Hammer Arm, taking it out of the match. Ash thanked it for a good battle.

Paul swaps Ursaring out for his Paul, and Ash sends out Chimchar. Team Rocket are excited to see Chimchar battle. Chimchar uses Flamethrower, but Electabuzz uses Protect to block. Paul has Electabuzz put up a Light Screen before immediately returning it to its Poké Ball. While Jessie, James and Meowth complain about the constant switching of Pokémon, meaning more work for them, Brock is impressed that Paul got Electabuzz to use Protect and then Light Screen. Reggie believes that Paul used Protect to cover Electabuzz then Light Screen to cover his next Pokémon. Paul sends out Paul, which confuses Ash as Torterra, a partial Grass, has a disadvantage to Chimchar, but carries on. Ash orders Chimchar to use Flame Wheel, but Torterra counters with Stone Edge. Chimchar immediately dodges the Stone Edge by changing the direction of the Flame Wheel, but Torterra has the pointed stones follow, amazing Brock and Dawn. Chimchar is unable to outrun the stones and suffers a hit. Ash has Chimchar use Flamethrower, which hits successfully, but the Light Screen protected Torterra and made the Flamethrower do only half the damage. Brock knows it is getting really difficult and Reggie adds that Chimchar is in danger of being hit by Stone Edge if it's too close to Torterra, leaving Ash and Chimchar with very few options. Realizing that Chimchar would not be able to defeat Torterra like this, he recalls it, making Jessie complain loudly about the extra work that Ash was giving them by switching Pokémon. Ash sends out Gliscor against Torterra again and orders X-Scissor. Torterra uses Frenzy Plant, scoring a hard hit this time and instantly knocking out Gliscor. Ash returns Gliscor to its Poké Ball, realizing that he is down to two Pokémon while Paul still has five. Pikachu requests to go up against Torterra, and after making sure it was okay to battle, sends it in planning to use speed and Iron Tail to gain the advantage, only for Paul to immediately return Torterra.

Paul sends out Ursaring again, leaving Ash unsure of what to do, as he knows that Ursaring is very powerful, having taken out two of Ash's Pokémon. Pikachu reminds Ash that he had the first move, and Ash orders Quick Attack, while Paul orders yet another Hammer Arm. Pikachu hits with Quick Attack, but Ursaring's Hammer Arm knocks the wind out of Pikachu and sends it flying back. Pikachu recovers and Ash orders Pikachu to use Iron Tail. Paul orders Ursaring to counter, but Ursaring suffers from paralysis from Pikachu's Static, and Iron Tail scores a clean hit, although Pikachu still suffers damage from the burn it received from Magmortar earlier. Just then, Ursaring's eyes begin to glow red, pleasing Paul. Reggie notes that Ursaring's Guts ability has been activated by its paralysis. Pikachu looks up to see Ursaring glowing red and screaming with rage, having suddenly just gained a lot of power. Paul commands Hammer Arm, while Ash orders Pikachu to counter, and Pikachu responds with a massive Thunderbolt, but it does not stop Ursaring. The Hibernator Pokémon grabs Pikachu with Hammer Arm and sends it flying into Lake Acuity, where after disappearing under the water, it lets out a final burst of electricity. Ash runs into the lake looking for his partner, while Reggie explains that Guts works by using the fact that Ursaring was suffering from a status condition to give it more power. Dawn and Piplup are very worried about Pikachu, and even Paul casts a glance towards the lake where Ash is looking. Pikachu emerges from the water, seemingly okay, but it quickly faints, not only exhausted but injured from Ursaring's attacks. Ash carries Pikachu to the sidelines and promises to get it to a Pokémon Center after the battle. Ash knows that Paul still has five Pokémon while Ash is down to only Chimchar, but he also knows that all of Paul's Pokémon have taken damage and he is still determined to continue, which concerns Pikachu. Ash sends out Chimchar while Paul leaves Ursaring in. Chimchar uses Flame Wheel, but Ursaring knocks it back with Slash. Ash then tells Chimchar to use Flamethrower, which scores a direct hit, and Ash then has Chimchar use Dig. Paul commands Ursaring to use Hammer Arm, but Chimchar emerged from Dig before Ursaring could pull off the attack and causes even more damage to Ursaring. Chimchar hits Ursaring with another Flamethrower, finally bringing the Pokémon down. Ash congratulates Chimchar on doing a great job which makes the Chimp Pokémon dance with joy. Jessie, James and Meowth cry with joy at seeing Chimchar do so well.

Ash approaches Chimchar and praises his Pokémon before asking if it is ok to continue. Chimchar nods its head in agreement and then starts to glow... as Chimchar has started to evolve! Everyone watches in amazement as Chimchar undergoes the transformation and evolves into Monferno. Ash is overjoyed over having a new Pokémon, and Dawn looks up Monferno in the Pokédex. Reggie notes that while Chimchar didn't fit Paul's training style, it was a perfect match for Ash's, and this has been displayed in Chimchar rising to Ash's call and evolving into Monferno, and as a result now has new abilities and techniques at its disposal. Monferno demonstrates this by swinging its fists quickly and effortlessly which causes them to glow. Monferno then swings at the ground which sends a gust of wind at Paul, who stands unflinching. Ash realizes that, as well as evolving, Monferno has also learned Mach Punch, which Monferno confirmed by somersaulting on the spot. Reggie continues that Ash and Monferno are the perfect example of how compatibility between trainer and Pokémon can mean everything. Also as they both have pride on the line all this will have a massive effect in the long run... this is why Reggie asked for the full battle; to give both Ash and Paul the chance to grow stronger as well as their Pokémon.

Paul sends out Electabuzz, which was initially surprised to see Chimchar has evolved but was still ready to battle its former teammate, a sentiment Monferno agrees with. Reggie notes the two are now on equal terms, and Ash commands Monferno to use Mach Punch. Monferno speeds towards Electabuzz and hits it square on the chest, sending an astounded Electabuzz flying back and smashing into a rock. Paul orders Electabuzz to use Thunder, which hits Monferno and makes it scream in pain. Ash responds to this by having Monferno use Flame Wheel, however Paul has Electabuzz use Protect, sending Monferno flying back. Monferno tries Flamethrower, but Electabuzz dodges and executes ThunderPunch. Monferno dodges it in mid-air, and Ash tells it to use Dig. Monferno tunnels underground, and when Electabuzz lands, it suffered a punch in the face. Ash commands another Flame Wheel, and Electabuzz responds with Thunder which heads straight towards Monferno. Ash has Monferno use Counter Shield, and as a result, the Thunder was deflected and Flame Wheel scored a direct hit. Reggie is impressed by how Ash is using the momentum to turn the battle around. Ash ordered another Mach Punch, but this time Monferno was hit by Electabuzz's Thunder, sending it back towards Ash and forcing it to its knees from both the damage and paralysis. Ash senses something bad and tells Monferno to use Flamethrower, but as he sees Monferno can launch the attack, he then realized that Monferno had been paralyzed. Just then, Monferno's tail flame starts to burn more fiercely. Dawn asks if Monferno has activated Blaze, however Brock and Reggie explained that the increase in Monferno's flame wasn't Blaze, but was actually due to its determination to defeat Electabuzz. Ash is delighted that Monferno is so focused on winning and tells it to use Mach Punch while Paul commands his Electabuzz to use ThunderPunch. The two Pokémon head towards each other full of fury, and both attacks connect at the same time, which causes a massive explosion in the middle of the battlefield. When the smoke clears, Monferno and Electabuzz continue to stare each other down. While Electabuzz is very weak, Monferno took far more damage and collapses to the ground, badly injured, to Ash's horror. Olivier rules Monferno as being unable to battle, which means Paul has won the match and Ash has suffered his worst defeat ever.

The sun starts to set on Lake Acuity, as Paul returns Electabuzz to its Poké Ball and Ash cradles Monferno in his arms, telling it that it did a great job. Reggie congratulates Paul on his win, and Paul does something that his brother hadn't seen him do in a long time...smiles, acknowledging that it was indeed a spectacular battle, Paul promises to send Reggie his Pokémon and bids farewell to him and Olivier before leaving. As for Ash, he is left devastated by this total defeat, almost crying, knowing he was completely outclassed by his rival. And so, the episode ends with Ash holding his badly injured Monferno, with his future in the Sinnoh League and as a Pokémon Trainer left in serious doubt.
Synopsis
incomplete synopsis
Upon reaching Snowpoint City, Ash and his friends are welcomed by the Gym Leader of the Snowpoint Gym, Candice. The group accepts her offer to show them around the city; the first place they are lead to is a Trainers' School where Candice works as a teacher. Ash is then asked about the secret of his success as a trainer. He answers with his usual motto 'The best defense is offense', but he faces a nasty surprise when he participates in a quiz. He doesn't even know the answer to the question about Pikachu because he says a wrong answer before Candice had finished the question. However, there is a quite knowledgeable businessman named Jeremiah who can answer to all questions with amazing speed. After the test, he says that Ash is not clever enough, but Brock comforts him, saying that he is great at gym battles. Later, Ash meets Zoey and Candice at a little hut where the two girls used to play together. Zoey then reveals that she met her Glameow when she was too little to raise a Pokémon. However, she could keep Glameow and raised it together with Candice until Zoey turned ten.
Meanwhile, Team Rocket steals all the Pokémon stored at the school. When Jeremiah arrives to get back the Poké Balls, James' Carnivine immobilizes his Skuntank with Vine Whip. At the moment Jessie's Seviper is about to attack, Pikachu comes to the rescue and knocks it out. After Team Rocket reveal themselves, Candice and Ash form a team to defeat them. With the help of the Blizzard attack of Candice's Abomasnow and Buizel's improved Ice Aqua Jet, Team Rocket blasts off again. However, the Poké Balls start to fall, but Piplup collects them safely with Whirlpool. Seeing how Ash beat Team Rocket, Mr. Jeremiah apologizes for being rude. With all the Poké Balls safe and sound, Ash now concentrates on his upcoming gym battle against Candice.

Trivia
* This episode begins the four-part Snowpoint City arc.
* There is no Professor Oak's Pokémon lecture following this episode, instead being replaced with a preview of the following episode of Pokémon Sunday which is due to make a major game announcement. The advert is performed in the style of the lecture.
* This episode marks the third time Ash's Buizel uses its improvised move Ice Aqua Jet.
* The fact that Candice is also teaching in a Trainers' School mimics a similar event in Hoenn where another Gym Leader taught at a school (though this was also in the games). Also, there is a Trainer's School in Jubilife City in the games.
* Background music from Route 29 was used in this episode.
* One of Candice's students bears a striking resemblance to Vidso from The Screen Actor's Guilt.
* This is the first episode of the dub to be aired in 16:9 aspect ratio, as well as the first episode available in HD. In Japan, this change took place in The Lonely Snover!.

Errors
* Brock claimed that Zoey and Dawn battled Fantina, when it was really Zoey and Ash who battled her.
* When Candice's class is seen for the first time, the top of Stunky's head is colored purple, instead of white.
Yellow (Japanese: イエロー Yellow), or Amarillo del Bosque Verde (Japanese: イエロー・デ・トキワグローブ Yellow de Tokiwa Grove) is the fourth main character of the manga series Pokémon Adventures. She first appeared in volume three, when she was saved by Red from a rampaging wild Dratini.

When Red goes missing, Blue sends Yellow out to find him, and has her disguise herself as a boy. Most of the characters did not learn her real gender until the end of the G/S/C saga. Yellow's straw hat hides her ponytail as well as containing the Rainbow Wing and Silver Wing.

Yellow's first Pokémon is a Rattata that Red helped her catch. Her starter Pokémon is Red's Pikachu which travels with her when she searches for Red. She later obtained her own Pikachu, Chuchu, which made a Pichu egg with Red's Pikachu at the Johto Pokémon daycare.

Yellow's special skill, as described by Professor Oak, is Pokémon healing and is called the "Healer" (癒やす者 Healer). She received psychic abilities from the Viridian Forest, which include the ability to read the emotions of Pokémon and heal their wounds. Yellow is physically small and can still pass for a boy even at 14, something that is a running gag within the manga.

Character history
Red, Green & Blue
Yellow makes her first, unnamed appearance in Drat That Dratini, towards the end of the first chapter, when Red saves her from a rampaging Dratini. Red then helps Yellow catch her first Pokémon, a Rattata, and leaves a strong impression on her with his words about raising Pokémon with a kind and gentle heart and his actions to save Viridian Forest from the menace of Team Rocket.

Yellow
Two years later, when Red mysteriously goes missing after receiving a battle invitation from Bruno of the Elite Four, Yellow just as mysteriously shows up in Professor Oak's lab, disguised as a boy. She takes Red's Pikachu, Pika, and promises to find Red. Oak doesn't trust her and he makes her battle his Spearow with her Doduo. She defeats him and doesn't even injure either Pokémon, allowing her to gain Oak's trust. She is then fishing in the Viridian Forest when Pika wanders off and sees Bill drowning. Pika runs back to Yellow and she reads his mind and rescues Bill from a Seadra which she catches and releases after healing it.

Bill then stays with her for a while, and the two of them run into Lorelei of the Elite Four, who explains everything to them, which Yellow seemed to already know. They escaped her and her Dewgong, but she later found them in a cave and attacked them with her Cloyster. She was attempting to bury them alive in that cave by combining Dewgong and Cloysters attacks to form an Ice Spike Cannon. Yellow then had Pika act as a decoy for a bit by throwing his Poké Ball out through a small crack and then got him back in. She read his mind and got out of the cave by using a the same tactic except with a fake Poké Ball as a decoy. They are chased by Lorelei and when they jump into a lake she freezes it over, and starts to ask questions about Yellow's ability. While she was asking these questions, Ratty was biting through the iceberg and they were freed and before Lorelei could once again call out her Pokémon to stop them, Green appeared and knocked her Poké Ball away. Lorelei then contacted Agatha and told her about Yellows ability, proclaiming her to become a potential threat and that she is now a target of the Elite Four as well.

She then is found by Erika who hears about her from Misty and wants to put Pika under her care. After hearing about a Red look-a-like Pika rushes off. The look-a-like turns out to be a Super Nerd who was hired by Agatha to kidnap Pika. After chasing him for a while the super nerd uses his Persian to Scratch on the walls to hurt Yellows ears and make her lose her focus, than he uses his Marowak's Bonemerang laced with spores from his Paras in order to incapacitate her Pokémon. She later recalled her Pokémon and healed them, taking a Bonemerang to the ribs because of hit. She then had her Pokémon execute a plan that she thought of before she was knocked out. She had Dody and Ratty dig up pieces of metal and had Pika zap them, and since the Super Nerd was in an electric proof suit, they hit him. Before the good Gym Leaders of Kanto can fully examine him a Gastly appears and tries to whisk him away. When Blaine tries to have his Growlithe use Fire Blast to take it out it almost hits a Caterpie which Yellow manages to save. Blue then comes in and defeats the Gastly, telling all of the Gym Leaders that that Gastly belonged to Agatha of the Elite Four. Yellow then asks to train with him, which he allows but before she leaves, Misty gives her Omny and Brock gives her Gravvy.

When training with Blue she then found out that the Caterpie she had saved followed her all of the way to their training area. After Blue tells her to catch that Caterpie it becomes clear that Yellow doesn't actually know the basics of Pokémon. She didn't know what Ratty's attacks were, she didn't know what Evolution was and cried when Ratty evolved, and all of the Pokémon she owned she obtained other than through battle. She then decided to have her new Caterpie which she named Kitty get to know Pika hile she got Vermilion Flowers, which are supposed to be a Caterpie's favorite food, only to find that the two of them were asleep after Pika saved it from death multiple times (from a cliff, several cacti, and three Pidgeotto). After training Dody and Ratty for about a week she then attempts to train the Pokémon she gained from the Gym Leaders but without their respective leaders they were confused and refused to listen to Yellow. A pack of Mankey then appeared because they were hungry and planned on eating Yellow and Blue and Blue instructed Yellow to defeat the Primeape leader while he took out the front lines. When it became clear that she couldn't he used his Porygon to defeat it and the pack ran away. Yellow then healed the Primeape and told Blue that she would continue to train on her own.

Since she didn't have a Pokémon that could Surf Blue told her to take the SS Anne where she ran into the Team Rocket Elite Trio. They exploded the SS Anne using a Slowpoke and Yellow takes them on wanting to see how much Blue's training has payed off. When all of the passengers fall off of the boat as a result of the bomb she has Caterpie use String Shot to make buoys to ensure the passenger's safety. She then defeats the Rockets quite easily with the small help of the Pokémon Fan Club Chairman. The Chairman then learns of Red's kidnapping.

She then learns of the legendary evolutionary stones that evolve Pokémon but do not disappear after use. She tries to get it only to be swarmed by a group of Tentacool. She then finds out the reason was that a baby Tentacool was stuck under a rock and she and Gravvy move it, almost dying but the baby Tentacool allowed her to breathe underwater out of gratitude. She then finds out that the only stone still there was the Leaf Stone and that Red must have taken them to evolve Vui (Blue previously made her memorize all of Red's entries so that was how she learned of Eevee).

It is later revealed that it was in fact Green who sent Yellow on this quest and disguised her as a boy, also bugging her hat so she could track her location and hear her talking.

Yhen Yellow is trying to find a Pokémon that can Surf she hears of a Vermilion Surfing Contest with the prize being a Dragonair that could Surf for her. She borrows a Slowpoke from a swimmer but before the event starts, the Dragonair is revealed to belong to Lance and with one blast, he destroys Vermilion City, although since Vermilion Surfing Contest is such a big event he knew there would be few fatalities. After finding out that Yellow's Pikachu was Pika he attempts to take it simply to calm Agatha and Lorelei who were angry that it eluded both of them. After being tossed around Pikachu learned Surf by manipulating its Substitute and then Lance disappeared.

After sleeping in a forest of Exeggutor and Oddish she found that they were abnormally migrating from Professor Oak due to the attacks of the Elite Four destroying habitats and throwing the balance of nature out of balance. When she came back to Cinnabar Island she saw a man training his Arcanine and an unknown Pokémon (later revealed to be Mewtwo. The man then takes Yellow back to his Gym and reveals himself to be Blaine wearing a disguise. The two of them then learn that Brock had found something on Mt. Moon, an ice sculpture of Red frozen in ice. After learning from Blaine that the Elite Four HQ was at Cerise Island and that the respective cities of the Good Gym Leaders of Kanto were under attack the two of them decided to attack Cerise Island but travel there via different routes. Once she reaches Cerise Island she meets up with Blue and they stealthily navigate the island by having Jigglypuff fly them across shrouded in Horsea's Smokescreen. Once the map Yellow obtained was eaten by a Slowbro they followed it to a cave and found Blaine, Blue, Koga, Sabrina, and Lt. Surge.

In the final battle on Cerise Island, Sabrina's Spoons of Destiny choose Blaine as Yellow's partner. The two of them intrude on Bruno's battle with Lt. Surge and Bill, but they are blocked out by a barrier. When Electrode's Explosion goes off it sends up a tsunami that drenches Blaine and Yellow, washing off her hat and revealing her ponytail, revealing to all that she was actually a girl. The two of them find themselves facing Lance in a fierce and long battle Inn the beginning Blaine had Yellow stay back and he battle Lance with Mewtwo single handedly and almost defeated him until their emotional connection made them pass out. Although Blaine was aware that this may happen he decided to let Yellow finish off Lance's weakened Pokémon while Blaine went for Lance's Poké Balls so Lance couldn't call upon any other Pokémon. Although the Poké Balls were destroyed Lance revealed that he had already sent his Pokémon out of their Poké Balls before the battle even started. Lance then revealed that he was also a blessed Viridian Trainer like Yellow and had the same powers that she had. After dragging the battle to the top of Cerise Island whoch was a volcanic crater Lance was able to gain an advantage with bubbles that were invisible to light by having bubbles be made of colors red, blue, and green. Giovanni then comes to Yellow's assistance but that forces the final badge that Lance needed to power his Badge Energy Amplifier, which he had enlarged to become Cerise Island. He used the Amplifier to summon Lugia, controlling it so it would help him wipe out humanity. Without a Pokédex to stop her team from evolving, she let her team completely evolve (including Kitty who evolved twice in a row, and Gravvy, who most often doesn't evolve except by trade). With all of her team's nnewfound power Yellow was able to channel all of their energy and have Pika use an attack known as Megavolt, an attack 10x more powerful then a regular thunderbolt, defeating Lance and scaring Lugia away.

After it all ends, she returns Pika to Red, who is left the only main character unaware of Yellow's real gender.

Gold, Silver & Crystal
Red gives Pika to Yellow again when he leaves for Mt. Silver. Yellow also has a Pikachu of her own now, Chuchu, and she takes both of them with her when her uncle shows up and suggests she joins him to Johto. In Johto, Yellow meets Crystal, and later ends up staying in the Pokémon Day Care center in Goldenrod City with the Day Care couple, where Pika and Chuchu produce an egg.

When the final battle with the Masked Man commences, it is revealed the the two feathers that Green once stole from him are hidden in Yellow's straw hat. When her hat is removed to get the feathers, everyone, including Red, learns that Yellow is in fact a girl.

FireRed & LeafGreen
In the fifth chapter, Yellow meets up with Silver in Viridian City. Silver is looking for his birth parents, and Yellow helps him by reading his Silver's mind. At the end of the chapter, Yellow and some of the other Pokédex holders are turned into statues by Sird.

Emerald
During the final battle against Guile Hideout in the Battle Frontier, Emerald wishes Jirachi to save the petrified Pokédex holders, and Yellow and the rest are finally set free. They then all help defeat the villain.
Abilities
Being born with special abilities, Yellow has demonstrated several as of the Fifth chapter. Her abilities demonstrated include:

*Limited telekinesis, enough to manipulate a Poké Ball on a string.
*The ability to read the minds, emotions, and memories of Pokémon.
*Healing abilities, thus far only used on Pokémon.
*Able to "synch spirits" with her Pokémon to boost their levels into the mid 80's in times of need.

Trivia
* Yellow and Emerald are the only Pokémon Adventures characters not directly based on game characters. They also are named after the third version of the first two odd-numbered generations. Yellow is, however, the fourth game of Generation I in Japan, with Pokémon Blue being the third.
* Most of Yellow's Pokémon have received a drawback in level, since in the second chapter, all her Pokémon were around level forty, while at the end of the GSC saga, their levels are as above.
Synopsis
synopsis cleanup
The episode started with the Battle Frontier (Generation III) in the sky, with Team Rocket holding on to it. Pyramid King asked Ash if he knew the legend of the Snowpoint Temple. Maria explained that it happened long ago. A volcano erupted violently and burned Snowpoint City to a fire pool. In front of a blue light appeared Regigigas. Not only that, Regice, Regirock, and Registeel also appeared to protect the city. Regigigas then went into a deep sleep and the Regi trio turned into pillars in Snowpoint Temple. Brandon suggested that the person behind that is aiming for Regigigas. Meanwhile, Team Rocket heard it and decided to capture Regigigas and present it to Giovanni but they accidentally let go and fell off. Samuel showed Snowpoint Temple on a screen and everybody saw Hunter J. Brandon explained to Maria that J was the one who treated Pokémon as tools. Brandon also explained to the gang that they came here to do research on the legend. J's henchmen saw the Battle Pyramid and informed J. Inside the temple, J told her henchmen not to let them get near, so they sent many Metang and Skarmory to attack the Pyramid using Sludge Bomb and Flash Cannon, respectively. One of the engines was hit and the Pyramid fell to the ground. Brandon, Maria and the gang went off with a small airship while Samuel stayed in the Pyramid to repair it. Pikachu used Thunderbolt on the Skarmory and Dawn used BubbleBeam on the Metang. After defeating J's henchmen's Pokémon, the gang ran in the temple.

Meanwhile, J saw the three pillars. J sent out J and commanded it to use Hyper Beam. The ice and rock pillars were soon destroyed. As Salamence was about to destroy the steel pillar, Brandon asked it to stop. Maria explained that awakening Regigigas will put everything in danger. However, Salamence soon destroyed the steel pillar and a crystal ball-like object began glowing. Regigigas was still not awakened and J commanded Salamence to use Flamethrower and a triangle begun glowing. A red light appeared from the triangle and Regigigas appeared. It then began using Hyper Beam. Just as J was about to turn Regigigas to stone using her bracelet, Regigigas used Hyper Beam at her. This was countered with by her Salamence's Dragon Pulse. J then retreated as Regigigas started to go on a rampage. As the temple started to collapse and rocks were about to fell on them, Brandon sent out his Brandon's Regis, Brandon's Regis and Brandon's Regis. Regirock used Focus Punch, Regice used Zap Cannon and Registeel used Iron Head to destroys the rocks. They then fled the temple.

The exit was blocked but Regigigas managed to get out. Regigigas continued to use Hyper Beam. Brandon decided to capture it to calm it down. The legendary golems used Hyper Beam on Regigigas and Regigigas countered it with its Hyper Beam. The Regis then started to attack together but Regigigas pinned them down. Registeel and Regirock then grabbed hold of Regigigas and Regice used Ice Beam, Freeze Regigigas. J was overlooking them and stated that it would be better to use their power to help her weaken Regigigas. Regigigas, however, managed to defrost. Regice then used Zap Cannon and Regigigas was Paralyze. After that, Registeel used Iron Head and Regigigas fell. Regirock used Stone Edge, making Regigigas very weak. Just as Brandon was about to capture Regigigas with a Poké Ball, J's Ariados used its String Shot to tie them up. After J returned Ariados to its Poké Ball, Regigigas's eyes began to glow and so did the Regis'. Regirock and Regice then used Zap Cannon and Registeel used Flash Cannon to attack J. Maria explained that it was the same as the legend, the Regis had become the guardian of Regigigas. The four legendary Pokémon then started to go away from the temple, so J followed them.

All four Pokémon started to attack the mountains using Hyper Beam together. Brandon tried to return his Pokémon to their Poké Ball but it failed. Regice then used Zap Cannon at Brandon but, luckily, Brandon dodged it. Dawn explained that it seems the four Regis were heading towards the city.

Once in the forest, the Regis start using Hyper Beam. Team Rocket still have plans to capture Regigigas but Registeel blasted them off using Flash Cannon. Back near the temple, Piplup tries to bite the web while Brandon, Ash and Pikachu struggled to break free. Brock then had an idea. He told Maria that he is happy to be with her and he would never let go of the web that tied them together. Brock then came out and used Poison Jab on him, breaking the web. Over the Battle Pyramid's speaker, Samuel explained that the Pyramid needed more time to repair. Brandon then told him to inform Officer Jenny to protect the city.

Meanwhile, J uses her airship to get ahead of the legendary Pokémon. She and her henchmen were ready to capture Regigigas. The four Regis then reached the area where she was. J's airship then shot lasers at them and the Regis countered it with Hyper Beam. The lasers managed to shoot them though. After that, the airship shot gum at Regigigas trapping it. Regigigas then used Hyper Beam, destroying one of the airship's engines. The three Regis continued to use Hyper Beam at J but J managed to dodge all of them. Just as J was about to use her bracelet to turn Regigigas to stone, Regirock protected it, and Registeel soon after, and finally Regice, turning to stone in the process. With no one to protect Regigigas, J used the bracelet once again, however, Brandon jumped down and was hit by the light, turning him to stone too. Regigigas caught him before he hit the ground. J used her bracelet once again but Pikachu used Thunderbolt and Piplup used BubbleBeam. J countered with Dragon Pulse. Regigigas got free of the gum and stood in front of the airship. It deflected the Dragon Pulse back to Salamence. J's bracelet was destroyed in the process. Just as J was about to attack Regigigas once more, her henchmen replied that her client decided to cancel his deal with J. Immediately, she and her henchmen left the area. Maria went up to Regigigas and apologized it for awakening it and asked it to help them. It then agreed and used Hidden Power to remove their petrification . After being thanked by Brandon, it turned back into an orb.

Just as the sun was about to set, the group returned to Snowpoint Temple. Brandon said that, to prevent Regigigas from awakening again, he will rebuild the temple and let Regice, Registeel and Regirock protect it, just like the legend. Brandon told Maria that they will work together to protect the sleeping Regigigas.

Major events
It is, along with Raikou and Entei, one of the legendary beasts created by Ho-Oh after the burning of the Brass Tower.

Suicune is pursued in the anime, Crystal, and HeartGold and SoulSilver by Eusine.

Suicune is the version mascot of Crystal, appearing on the boxart.

Suicune was a major character in the movie Celebi: Voice of the Forest.

Biology
Physiology
Suicune is a blue wolf-like creature with some feline characteristics, white rhombus-shaped spots and a white underside. Suicune has a purple cape that resembles a northern aurora or a flowing river and two white streamer-like tails, strangely these tails are never seen flowing behind Suicune, a possible effect from the Northern wind blowing from behind it. It has a hexagon-shaped crest on its forehead and has small paws. Suicine can purify water by stepping in dirty water.

Gender differences
Suicune is a genderless species.

Special abilities
Suicune has the power to purify dirty water and can walk across water. Northern winds always seems to blow where ever it shows up. Because Suicune is the embodiment of the north winds, it is able to learn and use almost every attack with relation to the wind (such as Gust, Icy Wind, Blizzard, and even Tailwind, making it the only non-Flying type to do so). Suicune, like the other Legendary Beasts, is also extremely fast, but, interestingly, it does not learn ExtremeSpeed naturally. It also sports limited mental powers.

Behavior
* In the anime, Suicune has shown a heroic and calm nature to dangerous situations and has appeared just in time to save the main character or character of the day, as shown in Drifloon on the Wind! when it races to save Ash and Paige.
* In Pokémon Adventures, it was thought to be searching for a trainer strong enough to master him, but was however looking for allies in the battle against the Masked Man to save its creator, Ho-Oh.
* It's sometimes seen "howling" off sides of cliffs.

Habitat
Since Suicune is a member of the Legendary Beast Trio, Suicune races around the land. Some say it searches for a pure reservoir. Many speculate that Suicune and the rest of the Legendary Beasts are indeed not unique species because in Celebi: Voice of the Forest, Professor Oak speaks as if the Suicune in question was a specific Pokémon of that species.

Its first appearance is in the episode Don't Touch That 'dile when Ash, Misty, and Brock spot Suicune in the middle of a lake near New Bark Town. When it spots the group, it runs off.

The first significant and lengthy appearance of Suicune is in Celebi: Voice of the Forest. In the course of the movie, it demonstrated its ability to purify water, as well as doing battle with Dark Celebi.

Another significant appearance is in the episode For Ho-Oh the Bells Toll, where it appeared in Ecruteak City after one of the Crystal Bells from the Tin Tower was destroyed.

Suicune also appears in Sinnoh in Drifloon on the Wind!.

It was a friend to two young Joys named Marnie and Paige. Suicune saved Ash and Paige.

Suicune also have a small cameo at the opening of Arceus and the Jewel of Life.
Pokémon Adventures
Suicune was awakened by Yellow along with its two counterparts, and the three raced around Kanto and Johto looking for Trainers to help them defeat the Masked Man to free Ho-Oh. Suicune, in particular, personally challenges nearly every single Gym Leader in the two regions. During its travels, it encounters both Eusine and Crystal, both of which become obsessed with capturing it. Crystal acquires the Crystal Bell, but is still unable to capture Suicune. She has her confidence shattered by this and has to retreat back to her old training grounds to regain her confidence. Suicune later chooses Misty as its partner, but then pairs up with Crystal anyway after Misty becomes injured.

Suicune can communicate with Raikou and Entei Extrasensory.
* In the anime, Suicune's body color and headpiece are more of a bluish-green color, while its in-game sprites and Ken Sugimori's official artwork show Suicune's body being more of a sky blue color.
* Suicune is the only Generation II legendary Pokémon to appear in a Diamond & Pearl series episode so far.
* Suicune is the only member of the legendary beast trio that does not require the Mystery Part or Secret Slab to appear to the player in Pokémon Mystery Dungeon 2 as items cannot be taken into the Final Maze.
* In Crystal, Suicune does not know Roar like it does in , due to it being a stationary boss. This change carried over to , making Suicune the only one of the roaming trio that cannot Roar its opponent away. Thus, it is the easiest to catch. This change carried over to Generation IV as well, possibly because of HeartGold and SoulSilver using the same storyline as Crystal.
* Suicune is the only legendary version mascot outside of the Generation III games not to have a signature move.
* Suicune is one of few Pokémon whose sprites are the same in both Gold and Silver.
Origin
Suicune resembles a maned wolf in its body type as well as some of it's habits, or a cheetah in the way it runs. Its ability to purify water is also reminiscent of a unicorn. Suicune may also resemble Fujin, the Shinto god of wind, who wears leopard skin.
Name origin
Suicune's name is probably based off its Japanese name, Suikun. Suikun is likely a combination of 水 sui, water, and 君 kun, monarch. Though, the game title it is the mascot of suggests that it's derived from 水晶 suishō, crystal.
