Wherefore Art Thou, Pokémon? (Japanese: ニドランのこいものがたり Nidoran's Love Story) is the 100th episode of the Pokémon anime. It was first broadcast in Japan on June 10, 1999 and in the United States on April 22, 2000.

spoilers
Synopsis
Ash, Misty and Tracey arrive in an old looking town where they meet a young Trainer by the name of Emily who is looking for her Nidoran♀ by the name of Maria with an orange ribbon around her neck. She asks if the gang have seen her. Ash looks up his Pokédex and gets a picture of Nidoran♂ and then eventually the female one. She pleads with them to help her and they agree.

After the gang search for a little while, save for Pikachu who finds some pink fruit. Ash and Misty eventually bump into Ralph, another kid from the town who has a similar problem as before. He is looking for Tony, a male Nidoran with a blue and purple ribbon. Ash looks up the male Nidoran in his Pokédex and gets the data. Tracy eventually comes back with Emily asking if they have found Maria yet and Ralph calls her a kidnapper. Both Ralph and Emily eventually begin to argue over their two Pokémon.

Tracey's Marill comes back and points to where both Nidoran are located. Ralph and Emily get overjoyed and literally run over Tracy to get to them. The gang also follow where they are led to a flower garden where they find both Nidoran cuddling into each other. Tracy and Misty immediately realize what is going on but Ash as usual is clueless. Both Pokémon act very romantic but shortly after are taken away by their trainers. Both Ralph and Emily insult the others Nidoran.

Ash, Misty and Tracy go to a sandwich bar and talk to the owner who tells them Ralph and Emily’s story. They both knew each other since they were children and competed in many of the same contests and caught many of the same Pokémon; this led to their own two Nidoran Tony and Maria falling in love. However with Ralph and Emily hating each other so they could not be together.

The gang leave the sandwich bar at sunset when they spot a Nidoran running in front of them, revealed to be Tony and it vanishes into a group of buildings. Tony is seen calling up to a window when Maria comes out to see him. Misty realizes that Tony is “talking sweet talk” up to the window, Ash asks how she knows but Misty merely tells him that he is not mature enough to understand. Tony and Maria continue talking to each other until Emily appears at the window and dunks him at the window with a pale of water. Ralph eventually finds Tony soaking and takes him back to his house, which is revealed to be right next to Emily’s house. Misty vows to do something about the situation but Ash tell her that it is none of her business but Misty brushes him off. Ash then makes one of his remarks that makes Misty call him a big baby. Team Rocket as usual are in the bushes listening in on the situation and vow to capture the two.

Later during the night Misty is writing letters. One for Emily and one for Ralph from each other. As usual Misty and Ash end up arguing but they turn on Tracy when he says that PokéShipping and they call him crazy. Jessie plots to have MTR convince Tony and Maria to come away with Team Rocket by tricking them into thinking that it is the only way to be together. Jessie also gives off a bit of her love life trials only to have Meowth call her a nut job to which Jessie boots him and James. Meowth goes first to Maria and then to Tony to try and convince them to come with him only to have it end in failure because as much as they love each other they would never abandon their trainers. With their first plan in failure Jessie comes up with another plan to which James and Meowth do not have much enthusiasm.

The gang are next seen waiting in the bushes to see the fruits of Misty’s plan. Emily, Ralph and their Nidoran come into the park where they both accuse each other of sending the other a stupid gift and letter. Misty sent Ralph a toy plane and Emily a bouquet of flowers however Ralph throws up on planes and Emily being allergic to Misty’s flowers. Both start fighting once again. They are interrupted however when Team Rocket show up, cross-dressing once again this time as a bride and groom who are newly married. They soon reveal themselves and grab Tony and Maria before saying their motto on top of a giant wedding cake. Inside the cake they reveal their balloon and make their escape. Misty tells Emily and Ralph that it was their fault that their Pokémon were stolen. However Ash and Tracy notice some cans that fell from Team Rocket’s balloon and they follow them.

Team Rocket attempt to dress up Maria and Tony despite their squirming only to have the gang find them thanks to the cans. Tony and Maria make their escape but Jessie commands Jessie to attack. Ralph and Emily command them to use their tackle attack which knocks Arbok back. James joins in and calls out James who eats Jessie’s head this time. Maria uses Scratch on Arbok who in retaliation attacks Tony who is knocked back. The battle ensues equal sided until Victreebel traps Tony and Maria rescues him. Both Ralph and Emily find out that both Pokémon are fighting for one another. Both Nidoran beat back Arbok and Victreebel by using double attacks like Double Kick. Ralph and Emily say their attack names together this time without minding each other.

Team Rocket eventually try to make their escape and catch the Nidoran by use of one of their many giant vacuums but it goes amiss when Pikachu uses a branch to get to their balloon but avoid being blown in. It uses its Thunderbolt and destroys the vacuum. Misty calls out Misty who bursts Team Rocket and they go blasting off once again. Misty gets on to Ralph and Emily to make them see sense in their actions. Both of them finally listen and decide what’s best for their Pokémon. Tony and Maria finally kiss and in doing so evolve into Nidorina and Nidorino. Tracy sketches it but also wonders what made them evolve their battle of their kiss but Misty hits him with his drawing. Ash asks if people change with their kiss. Misty says back to him that they should find out for themselves.

At the end Team rocket are seen being rung with Arbok and Victreebel on the church bells.
Trivia
* The plot for this episode is based on William Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet. Likewise, this episode's dub title is a reference to a well-known line in the play, "Wherefore art thou Romeo?"
* The names of the two Nidoran, Tony and Maria, are taken from the musical West Side Story which is also based on Romeo and Juliet.
* This episode mentions that Ralph and Emily like to compete in Pokémon Contests, though it is unknown if these contests are the same as those introduced later on in the games.
* This is the 100th episode of the entire Pokémon anime, if Holiday Hi-Jynx and Snow Way Out! are NOT counted as episodes.
* When Jessie is talking about matters of the heart, her fantasy/flashback portrays her similarly to Scarlett O'Hara from the movie Gone with the Wind.
* At the end of the episode, Team Rocket break the fourth wall, replying to the Narrator's comment.
* Professor Oak's lecture: Kabuto. In the end, Oak picks up a Kabuto fossil, but accidentally drops it on his own foot.
* Pokémon senryū summary: At the bottom of the ocean, Kabuto, lies resting.
* When Ash was viewing the Pokédex entries of Maria and Tony, the newly evolved Nidorina and Nidorino, respectively, the picture in the Pokédex was of them with the accessories put on by their trainers, instead of the usual Sugimori art.
* This is the first time Pokémon Contests are mentioned in the anime.
* This is the first and only time two species of Pokémon are the answers to Who's That Pokémon?
* The Pokémon logo of the Pokémon Center ressembles Nintendo logo.
Errors
* In the beginning of the episode, there is a dubbing error in which the narrator says Ash defeated Prima in the previous episode. In reality, Ash was actually defeated by Prima and not the other way around.

Obviously Rhyperior is a strong Pokémon, I guess it will have position in the anime. Perhaps being one of Ash/Brock/Paul's (probably Ash's) Pokémon.-Billy4b2004 02:48, 12 January 2008 (UTC)
:I doubt that Ash will get one. He rarely gets a fully evolved Pokémon unless it's one of the starters. And Brock never gets Pokémon. I say Paul is the most likely canidate. --ケンジ'ガール 09:21, 10 January 2008 (UTC)
I think he would directly catch it as a Rhyperior like Noctowl. It would help him so much in the Sinnoh League battles like Snorlax, Sceptile and Charizard. And it will be Ash's first rock-type.It is better to train different types Pokémon in order to become a Pokémon master!-Billy4b2004 02:48, 12 January 2008 (UTC)
:::It'd be caught as a Rhydon, at the very least, likely near the northern entrance to Mt.
::::I don't think a Rhyperior is in Ash's future. For starters, the only time Ash ever caught a Pokémon that can reach a third stage as a third stage, it was on Ash's team for all of two minutes. Additionally, odds are pointing to Riolu as being Ash's sixth Pokémon and his main Fighting-type (yes, I do see Ash evolving, but it will be continued to be used mainly as a Fire-type), which means we'd have to rob him of one of his traditional mainstay types, most likely Ash, to get a Rhyhorn or Rhydon onto Ash's team.

::::And if Ash were to get rid of Turtwig, odds are he'd replace it with another Grass-type such as Cherubi (which I'd see going to Dawn instead if she doesn't get a Chikorita), Tangela, or Snover. Budew's out of the picture since Nando has a Nando, Carnivine is out of the picture since James has one, and I highly doubt Ash would catch a Grass-form Wormadam directly. --Shiningpikablu252 21:29, 12 January 2008 (UTC)
::I was just wondering if that was the picture that the article described with:

Leaf was supposed to be in the original Red and Green versions, due to the fact that on Nintendo's Official guidebook, it depicted a female trainer with long brown hair, a black dress, white gloves and short black boots, alongside the male protagonist and the rival. It is believed she was supposed to be in the game, but was left out for some reason.

If that's the right image, it should be added to the article to show viewers how she would have looked.GigaMetroid99 01:41, 17 December 2008 (UTC)

:I want to know that too. Following the trend that the 1st and 2nd gen games set, her name should be Green, or Blue in the Japanese version. I'm guessing someone just chose one of the optional names from FRLG and gave it to her when they made the article. There's no real basis for her name being "Leaf", so shouldn't we go by precedence, as was done with Gold, Silver and Kris, and just call her Green?. -Shaddow Boy
::::This isn't really a good habit to get into. If we start taking unused data as official canon, then Professor Oak started with Squirtle, the Safari Zone had no Pokemon in it 3 years after Red and Blue, and that the Lake of Rage is still a town. It just doesn't make sense. Fire Red and Leaf Green have officially fixed Green's (male rival's), name to that of the original, leaving lone Blue, the third version gal, without a truly official name. While logic would suggest we should call her Blue due to the Manga as well as Blue being the color generation's third game, we are stuck basing her name on what can only be called speculation. Floatzel (Japanese: フローゼル Flowsel) is a Water Pokémon.

It evolves from Buizel at level 26.

Biology
Physiology
Floatzel appears to be based off of an otter or weasel, with two pointed blue fins on its arms and two tails, as with its pre-evolution, Buizel. The yellow flotation device it had as a Buizel appears to have grown and now functions as a boat. It gives the impression of a swimmer with a towel draped around its shoulders. If Floatzel laid on its back, the structure round its neck could also be interpreted as a sort of inflatable dinghy using its tails much like its pre-evolution, as a propeller and its fins as oars. These small fins on Buizel's forelimbs grown into full-fledge fins that are used for a razor wind attack.

Gender differences
From back view, the males have two white spots and the females only have one.

Special abilities
Floatzel's abilities are basically the same as Buizel's, only stronger. Floatzel can now attack with Crunch and Ice Fang. As a fully evolved Pokémon, it can learn Hyper Beam and Giga Impact. Its floatation sac can inflate to look like a life vest, in a similar way Buizel can expand its sac, as seen in DP083.
Crasher Wake uses a Crasher Wake against Ash's Buizel in DP083.

Trivia
*Floatzel is tied with Starmie for fastest Water-type Pokémon with the base speed of 115.
*Although it can stand on its hind legs, Floatzel is unable to learn Drain Punch. However, it can learn Brick Break and Focus Punch, both of them hand-related techniques.
*Despite the fact that both it and its pre-evolution Buizel are Waters and have two tails (let alone just one), neither can learn Aqua Tail, even through breeding. Though, now that Platinum is released, Floatzel can learn it from the move tutor.
*In Platinum, Floatzel's sprite has the same pose as one of the Trainers who uses it.
*When Floatzel's maximum speed is combined with its ability, Swift Swim, it has the highest speed among all Pokémon, including Speed Deoxys.
Origin
Floatzel is based off an otter, which is in the same family as weasels.

Name origin
Floatzel's name comes from the words float and weasel.
Its Japanese name may come from the English words flow or float and weasel. Its German name, Bojelin, comes from Boje and Hermelin. Its French name, Musteflott, comes from mustélidé and flotter. Korean name is a slight variation of its Japanese name, made easier for Koreans to pronounce.

Super Smash Bros. Melee is a fighting game for the Nintendo GameCube and the sequel to the Nintendo 64 title Super Smash Bros. It, like its predecessor, pits Nintendo's many mascots against one another, and this time includes four Pokémon as playable characters, as opposed to the two featured in the previous game. Only Pikachu is available at the start, but eventually Jigglypuff, Pichu, and Mewtwo can be unlocked.
Playable Pokémon
Pikachu
Pikachu is a very fast character and pretty easy to knock of the stage due to his light weight. Pikachu taunts by saying: "Pika, Pika" and will wave at the players.
Ground Attacks
*A: Headbutt
*A (while dashing): Running Headbutt
*Up+A: Tail Smack
*Left or Right+A: Pika Kick
*Down+A: Tail Sweep
Smash Attacks
*Smash Up+A: Tail Somersault
*Smash Left or Right+A: Thundershock
*Smash Down+A: Electric Flower

Air Attacks
*A: Pika Roll
*Up+A: Tail Chop
*Foward+A: Electric Drill
*Backward+A: Glider
*Down+A: Electric Screw
B-Attacks
*B: Thunder Jolt
A ball of electricity will slinky across a level until it hits something or shorts out. When in the air, a small electric ball will appear and will slinky when it hits the ground.
*Up+B: Quick Attack
Pikachu will move blindingly fast from one point to another, up to two times. This attack will also slightly damage an enemy if Pikachu passes through one. This is Pikachu's recovery move and after executing it, Pikachu cannot do anything until he reaches the ground or grabs a ledge.
*Down+B: Thunder
Pikachu summons a cloud that will strike a thunderbolt down towards the ground. The thunderbolt cannot pass through any terrain objects or floors. The thunderbolt will damage any enemies in the air while on its way down. If the thunderbolt strikes Pikachu, any enemies near him will take the most damage.
*Side+B: Skull Bash
Pikachu will charge up and rocket sideways. Depending on how long the B button is held, Pikachu can fly farther and hit harder. This is not considered a recovery move, so Pikachu can use it again and again while in the air.

Grab/Throw Attacks
To grab an opponent, use Z or R+A. These are attacks executed only when holding an opponent using the aforementioned move.
*A or Z: Electric Shock
*Forward: Electrocution
*Backward: Submission
*Up: Electric Skull
*Down: Electric Slam

Pichu
Pichu's attacks are identical to Pikachu's, although Pichu damages itself while using attacks that use electricity. Pichu is really fast, actually one of the fastest, but is so light and small; it's very easy to send it flying. Pichu taunts by saying "Pichu!" and doing a little jiggle on the floor, either on its back or hopping on one foot.
Ground Attacks
*A: Generic attack
*A (while dashing): Headbutt
*Up+A: Tail Hit
*Side+A: Small Kick
*Down+A: Tail Sweep
Smash Attacks
*Smash Up+A: Head Slam
*Smash Left or Right+A: Sizzle Thundershock (Pichu will damage itself when using this move)
*Smash Down+A: Head Sweep
Air Attacks
*A: Pichu Roll
*Up+A: Tail Chop
*Forward+A: Electric Drill (Pichu will damage itself when using this move)
*Backward+A: Glider
*Down+A: Electric Screw (Pichu will damage itself when using this move)
B-Attacks
*B: Thunder Jolt
Pichu will damage itself and release an electrical ball that will arc across the ground until it dissipates or hits something.
*Up+B: Quick Attack
Like Pikachu, Pichu will zip really fast from one point to another up to two times. Unlike Pikachu however, Pichu will not damage anyone if it passes through an enemy while executing this, but instead will damage itself. 1% for the first traversion, then 3% for the next. This is Pichu's third jump.
*Down+B: Thunder
Pichu will summon a cloud to strike a lightning bolt down towards the ground. Pichu will damage itself if the bolt strikes Pichu. Unlike Pikachu's Thunder, this bolt travels slightly slower and as such, when hitting an enemy, it will shock them up to 4 times, dealing accumulative damage.
*Side+B: Skull Bash
Depending on how long you hold B, Pichu will charge up and zoom across to hit anyone in the way. Pichu can hold this charge for slightly longer than Pikachu and is much stronger when fully charged. Pichu will damage itself when using this move.

Grab/Throw Attacks
To grab an opponent, use Z or R+A, then to attack them, press A or Z again or tilt the control stick in one direction. These are attacks executed only when holding an opponent using the aforementioned move.

*A or Z: Shock
*Forward: Electrocution
*Backward: Submission
*Up: Electric Skull
*Down: Slam

Mewtwo
Despite being a legendary Pokémon, Mewtwo is easily knocked around. This is mainly due to the fact Mewtwo is always floating. Mewtwo will never run or dash across the ground, but hover and slide across. Mewtwo has the second highest jump in the game, after Falco. Mewtwo taunts by spinning around and laughing evilly.
Ground Attacks
*A: Dark Flash
*A A: Dark Flame
*A (while Dashing): Torch
*Up+A: Flip
*Side+A: Tail Whip
*Down+A: Tail Sweep
Smash Attacks
*Smash Up+A: Galaxy Force
*Smash Left or Right+A: Shadow Blast
*Smash Down+A: Shadow Bomb
Air Attacks
*A: Body Spark
*Up+A: Somersault Tail Hit
*Foward+A: Shadow Scratch
*Backward+A: Tail Flick
*Down+A: Meteor Kick (a Meteor Smash)
B-Attacks
*B: Shadow Ball
Press B once to cause Mewtwo to start charging. If he is hit while charging, he will lose the charge, but if he has charged long enough, and is hit, the charge for the Shadow Ball will still remain. Tilting the control stick left or right will cause Mewtwo to dodge in that direction and cease charging, preserving the Shadow Ball. Pressing R or L while charging will cease the charging without Mewtwo dodging. Mewtwo's Shadow Ball can also be left charging indefinitely and will damage anyone if they come into physical contact with the ball. While throwing it, Mewtwo will recoil, significantly if he is in the air. The ball, when thrown, will travel along a zig-zag jagged path until it hits something or dissipates. If the Shadow Ball hits a terrain object, it will erupt causing a small explosion that will cause splash damage to anyone nearby.
*Up+B: Teleport
Mewtwo teleports once in the direction of your choice. Mewtwo is invulnerable to damage while teleporting, but can still be grabbed. Teleport can't penetrate terrain objects or impenetrable floors.
*Down+B: Disable
Short range attack that temporary disables the opponent, rendering it dizzy and unable to move. The amount of time the opponent is dazed depends on its current damage. If you use this move again when the opponent is already disabled, it will flick the enemy up in the air as if you punched it. If you use this move in the air (successfully) the enemy will immediately start to freefall until it hits the ground.
*Side+B: Confusion
The opponent is flipped around in the air, causing damage. Unlike other moves this move does not degrade in damage if used continuously. If used with the right timing, this attack will also reflect projectiles.

Grab/Throw Attacks
To grab an opponent, use Z or R+A, then to attack them, press A or Z again or tilt the control stick in one direction. These are attacks executed only when holding an opponent using the aforementioned move.
*A or Z: Shock
*Forward: Barrage
*Backward: Psychic - Reverse Throw
*Up: Psychic - Spiral Throw
*Down: Body Slam

Jigglypuff
Jigglypuff is bouncy, has average speed, and is one of the lightest characters in the game. Like Kirby, she is able to fly back onto the stage, but unlike Kirby, after five jumps, she doesn't have an Up+B recovery move. She taunts by spinning on one foot and winking at the camera while calling out her name.
Ground Attacks
*A: Punch
*A A: One-two Punch
*A (while Dashing): Tackle
*Up+A: Back Kick
*Side+A: Roundhouse Kick
*Down+A: Low Kick
Smash Attacks
*Smash Up+A: Headbutt
*Smash Left or Right+A: Jump Kick
*Smash Down+A: Split Kick
Air Attacks
*A: Body Spark
*Up+A: Overhead Punch
*Foward+A: Drop Kick
*Backward+A: Back Kick
*Down+A: Spinning Drop Kick
B-Attacks
*B: Rollout
Hold down B to charge up speed and power. Jigglypuff spins in place (always facing the camera), and after letting go of B, rolls forward, hitting any opponent and damaging any container, stage hazard, etc. in its path. Tapping the control stick in the opposite direction will stop Jigglypuff, and allow you to reverse directions. If the attack ends with Jigglypuff in the air, you won't be able to recover.
*Up+B: Sing
Jigglypuff sings, lulling enemies close by to sleep. The opponent's damage determines how long they'll stay asleep. Not recommended on opponents with little damage, as they can fall asleep and recover in the time it takes Jigglypuff to stop singing.
*Down+B: Rest
Very short range attack that inflicts 20-30% damage and sends opponents flying. Good for easy KOs if the enemy's damage is high enough, but Jigglypuff must make direct contact with the opponent. Also, the move will only work the second the player hits Down+B; it takes a few seconds for her to recover, leaving Jigglypuff wide open.
*Side+B: Pound
Jigglypuff lashes out with her arm, inflicting 10-15% damage and popping the enemy straight up into the air. Good for setting up juggles, and also works well as a recovery move once a player has expended all of her jumps.

Grab/Throw Attacks
To grab an opponent, use Z or R+A, then to attack them, press A or Z again or tilt the control stick in one direction. These are attacks executed only when holding an opponent using the aforementioned move.
*A or Z: Right hook
*Forward: Quick Inflate
*Backward: Back Suplex
*Up: Pop-Up
*Down: Roll Around

Poké Ball Pokémon
One of the items that can be picked up in Super Smash Bros. Melee is the Poké Ball; with it numerous Pokémon can be summoned to damage enemies. These Pokémon and their effects in the game are listed below:

Venusaur

Venusaur causes an Earthquake around him that causes all characters touching the ground to go flying.

Charizard

Similar to the fire flower, this Pokémon uses the Flamethrower attack when released. He alternates between shooting it left and right.

Blastoise

This Pokémon uses the Hydro Pump attack when it comes out. Unlike the previous game, Blastoise will be pushed backward a little with each blast, meaning it can fall off if summoned with its back too close to the edge.

Clefairy

Uses Metronome to use a random attack like Togepi, but typically does a lot more damage. These moves are Blizzard, Explosion, or Fire Spin.

Electrode

Electrode uses Explosion after 3 seconds. You can throw him in the last second or so if you're quick enough.

Weezing

Emits Poison Gas and juggles any person that comes in close contact.

Chansey

Uses Softboiled to releases eggs that may contain additional items or heal a small amount of damage.

Goldeen

No effect, just Splashes around.

Staryu

Chases after the nearest opponent, then locks itself into position and shoots with Swift.

Snorlax

Flies up into the air and descends over a large area of the screen using Body Slam. Any character who comes in contact with Snorlax in either direction is sent flying.

Articuno

Uses the Blizzard attack. Anyone in the attack range when Articuno unleases this attack will be frozen for a time depending on how damaged they are.

Zapdos

Uses the Thundershock attack. Anything in the attack range will be hit by several electrical surges, and sustain quite a bit of damage. While being affected by this move, an enemy cannot move.

Moltres

Any person that comes into contact with its wings are knocked around, and usually sent flying since it is very strong.

Mew

No effect, but earns bonus points in one-player and bonus modes.

Chikorita

When released, unleashes a fury of Razor Leaf attacks hitting anyone in its path.

Cyndaquil

Similar to Charizard, unleashes the Flamethrower attack, but only does so in one direction. It can be hit off the screen with a strong enough attack.

Togepi

Has several attacks that are randomly selected with Metronome, all with different effects. The screen can black-out due to Night Shade, opponents can be driven into the ground by Magnitude, fall asleep due to Sing, or end up with Leech Seed

Bellossom

Puts any nearby characters into a deep sleep with Sleep Powder. How long they sleep for depends on their damage.

Marill

Runs across the stage using Double Slap, juggling any opponents briefly. Like Chikorita, Marill can be knocked off of the screen if hit hard enough.

Unown

Flies across the screen, returning with a large swarm of Unown moving in a random direction. Any character caught in the storm is damaged and juggled. Any one of the twenty-six Generation II Unown can appear from the Poké Ball, with the same effects.

Wobbuffet

Uses Counter, damaging anything that hits it. Wobbuffet and Electrode are the only Pokémon that will damage the character who releases it.

Scizor

Similar to Marill's Tackle, except it flies around the screen and causes a lot more damage.

Porygon2

Uses a powerful Tackle attack. When it connects, it sends characters flying.

Raikou

Uses a Spark attack, electrocuting anything periodically that gets caught standing on the floor within range.

Entei

Fire Spin attack, trapping anyone who lands in it and dealing up to 100% damage.

Suicune

Uses Icy Wind, causing high levels of damage.

Lugia

A rare find, it flies up and then lands in the background, shooting large gusts of wind using Aeroblast.

Ho-Oh

Unleashes a spiral of Sacred Fire, dealing up to 150% damage to anyone caught in the blast. Like Zapdos, anything caught in its attack is unable to move.

Celebi

Like Mew, doesn't affect the battle, but adds bonus points where applicable. The first time it is seen, a trophy is awarded.

Ditto

(Only accessible by using the Action Replay) Ditto jumps up from the Poké Ball and vanishes.

Cyndaquil (Japanese: ヒノアラシ Hinoarashi) is a Fire-type Pokémon. Along with Chikorita and Totodile, it is one of the three starter Pokémon available at the beginning of the Generation II games. It is also available in Pokémon Emerald as an award for catching the first 200 Pokémon in the Hoenn Pokédex.

Cyndaquil comes with the Ability Blaze, which increases the power of Fire-type attacks by 50% once the Pokémon has less than one-third of its maximum HP.

Cyndaquil evolves into Quilava starting at Level 14, then into Typhlosion starting at Level 36.

Biology
Cyndaquil is a shy and timid Pokémon. It lives and groups and tend to hide in dangerous situations. Most Cyndaquil, like Ash's, are inexperienced at start and don't know its strength and weaknesses.
Physiology
Its head is covered in a bluish top and a milky bottom. It has eyes that resemble those of Brock's. It has 4 spots where the flames erupt. It also has no nails/claws on its front paws and a single nail on its back feet.
Gender differences
None.

Special abilities
Cyndaquil is capable of defending itself by using the fire on its back. The fire grows more powerful as the Cyndaquil gets angrier or more defensive.

Behavior
Habitat
Cyndaquil can adapt to many habitats, however, most are found in the care of Trainers, having been their starter Pokémon. Being a Fire Pokémon, they prefer hotter areas.

Diet
Main article: Pokémon food

In the anime
Cyndaquil first appeared in the anime in Don't Touch That 'Dile as one of the three possible starters in Professor Elm's lab.

Ash Ketchum captured a Cyndaquil in Good 'Quil Hunting. During its early days on Ash's team, Cyndaquil was lazy and easily tired-out (e.g. waiting a while for the flames on its back to ignite so it could use Fire attacks). Eventually, Ash's Cyndaquil got over its shortcomings. Ash left his Cyndaquil, along with the rest of his Johto team, (save for Pikachu) at Professor Oak's lab when he set out for Hoenn.

Jimmy chose Cyndaquil as his starter Pokémon. By The Legend of Thunder!, it had become a Typhlosion.

Pike Queen Lucy has a pet Cyndaquil.

In the manga
In Pokémon Adventures (aka Pokémon Special) Gold took the Cyndaquil from Professor Elm's lab to try to catch the thief Silver. He named the Cyndaquil "Explotaro" for the explosive fire from its back.

In the TCG
Cyndaquil (TCG)

Other appearances
Super Smash Bros. Melee
When released from a Poké Ball, Cyndaquil will aim a Flamethrower diagonally towards the ground in one direction. It is one of the easiest Pokémon to avoid, however. It can also be knocked off the screen.

Trophy information
Cyndaquil frighten easily, so they're often found curled up in balls. When threatened, they flare the flames on their backs to drive off enemies. Cyndaquil was one of the three Pokémon that trainers could choose from at the beginning of Pokémon Silver, Gold, and Crystal. No one knows if their eyes are open.
NPC appearances
* Pokémon Pinball: Ruby & Sapphire: Hitting Cyndaquil will knock it back. After a few hits, Cyndaquil will knocked into the Egg stand and the flame on its back will start heating the egg. Hitting Cyndaquil one more time will cause the egg to hatch and the player will have a chance to catch the newly hatched Pokémon.
Origin
Its appearance is based on the echidna.
Name origin
Cyndaquil's name is a combination of the words cinder, meaning ashes, and quill, referring to needlelike hairs. Hinoarashi could be taken to mean 火の嵐, storm of fire, but it is likely to also be based on 山荒 yama-arashi, porcupine.
Houndour is similar to a Doberman, but it may have been inspired by Cerberus or other legends of hellhounds.
Name origin
Its name is a combination of hound and dour, or harshness. Its Japanese name is a corruption of devil.

The Sinnoh region (Japanese: シンオウ地方 Shin'ō-chihō) is a region in the Pokémon world, the setting of the Generation IV games Pokémon Diamond and Pearl. It is based on the geography of the Japanese island of Hokkaido, and according to the anime, the Sinnoh region is located north of the Kanto region.

Geography
Sinnoh features a broad range of new and classic environments for the player to explore including, for the first time in a Pokémon RPG, snowy routes. The region also features full-land geography, with only five sea routes. Despite this lack of sea routes, a direct opposite of the Hoenn region, the Sinnoh region is known to be rich in water, and has three lakes at the northernmost (Acuity), easternmost (Valor), and westernmost (Verity) ends of the main continent that are home to the members of one of the legendary trios of Sinnoh. Near Lake Valor, as well, there is a hidden fourth lake, Sendoff Spring, which houses Turnback Cave, the home of a fourth legendary Pokémon, Giratina.

Due to its large size, the main continent of Sinnoh can be broken into two sub-regions divided by Mt. Coronet, roughly comparable to how the continent that Kanto and Johto make up is essentially a contiguous region. Due to this, Shellos and Gastrodon have developed an instance of regional speciation, with members of the species found on the eastern side being blue-colored and members on the western side being pink-colored.

The western half of Sinnoh features a variety of landscapes. Its coasts are notably more rocky than the eastern half, however, the land is far more fertile, and the towns, for the most part, are rural. A windswept canyon, carved out by a river that flows from Mt. Coronet, is home to the Valley Windworks, which provides clean, wind-driven electricity to the nearby towns. This is not to say, however, that there is no importance to west Sinnoh, as Oreburgh City, Eterna City, and Canalave City are the locations of Pokémon Gyms, and Jubilife City, at the heart of the area, is the most technologically advanced city in the region.

Sinnoh's eastern half is home, however, to a vast many more things, including Pokémon Super Contests in Hearthome City, a Department Store in Veilstone City, the Great Marsh of Pastoria City, and the awe-inspiring Vista Lighthouse of Sunyshore City. In each of these cities, as well, there is a Pokémon Gym, which is very important for League-bound trainers.

Unlike the halves of Sinnoh divided longitudinally by Mt. Coronet, the northern area is sparsely populated, with Snowpoint City as the only major area, likely due to the harsh snows that blow down from the mountain's peak, making the area not only very cold, but as well making a trip northward very perilous. Despite this relative isolation, however, Snowpoint as well has a Pokémon Gym, making it another important stop for trainers who wish to compete in the Pokémon League.

A third sub-region is the Battle Zone, which is on a large island to the northeast of the mainland. Much like people from the Sevii Islands seem to consider their home to be a separate region from Kanto and Johto, people from the Battle Zone often refer to Sinnoh as a separate region. Several islands, including Newmoon Island, Fullmoon Island, and Iron Island, lie off the northwestern coast of Sinnoh as well, though these are far eclipsed in both size and importance by the mainland.

Separated from both the Battle Zone and the mainland of Sinnoh by several straits is the island on which Pokémon League of Sinnoh is located, the only access to which is by way of 223. It is here where Sinnoh's Victory Road is located, which, unlike previous incarnations has not two, but three entrances: One of these, of course, is the southern entrance that trainers from the mainland must navigate from, a second is the one that leads to the area in which the Elite Four can be challenged, and the third leads from a foggy area of Victory Road to 224, which is said to be a miniature version of Sinnoh. North from Route 224, through a special event, of course, leads the Seabreak Path to Shaymin's domain, the Flower Paradise.
Routes
Much like Hoenn before it, Sinnoh's routes are numbered so that they don't follow sequence directly from previously-known regions' routes. Routes in Sinnoh are numbered from 201 to 230. Compared to previous generations, there aren't many sea routes; there are many land routes and mountains. The idea of routes with differing weather conditions was also brought ahead from Generation III. For the first time ever in a Pokémon game, some of Sinnoh's routes have snow covering them.

Another quirk about the routes in Sinnoh is that some of them do not go directly east/west or north/south, but actually turn before reaching their destination, most notably Route 212, which has two limbs of equal length. While Hoenn's Route 114 did this on the Game Boy Advance, it was not to this scale, so one may presume that the GBA was limited in this sense.
*Sinnoh's Gym Leaders each use a type that has previously been seen in another region's Gym. Four of them were first seen in Kanto, in fact, they are the same types as the first four Gyms of Kanto, Rock, Water, Electric, and Grass. Similarly, the other four were first seen in Johto, and are the same as the fourth through seventh Gyms of that region, Ghost, Fighting, Steel, and Ice.

*If one were draw lines to connect the three lakes of Sinnoh, they form a big triangle. Mt. Coronet lies in the middle of the triangle. This is the same formation that Uxie, Mesprit and Azelf make on the top of Spear Pillar with Dialga or Palkia in the middle. It is also the same formation as the painting in the shrine in the middle of Celestic Town.

The Pewter Museum of Science is one of Pewter City's main attractions. Admission is PDollar50 for a child's ticket.

Exhibits include skeletons of Aerodactyl and Kabutops, a model of a Space Shuttle, and a Moon Stone that fell onto Mt. Moon in the form of a meteorite. The player can view a larger picture of the fossils by "talking" to the displays. In Red, Blue, and Yellow Versions, the Aerodactyl and Kabutops zoomed-in fossil sprites are sometimes seen as glitches.

Once the ability to use Cut out of battle is gained, players can sneak into the back of the museum and acquire the Old Amber from the scientists there; this will allow them to have a revived Aerodactyl at a later point.

In Pokémon FireRed and Pokémon LeafGreen, there's also a Move Tutor there who will teach Seismic Toss.

In the Generation I games and their Generation III remakes, an old man on the second floor of the museum states, "July 20, 1969! Humankind first set foot on the moon that day. I bought a color TV just so I could watch that news." Considering that July 20, 1969 was the date that real life humans landed on the moon, this quote suggests that the Pokémon games take place on planet Earth, and perhaps even at a contemporary time period.

In Generation II the museum is closed due to renovations.

In the Pokémon Special manga, Brock works as a security guard at the museum. It was there that he somehow managed to revive and acquire a Kabuto that later evolved into Kabutops. Later, however, it is burned down by two Magmar.

In the anime, Seymour is a researcher from the museum, but this isn't mentioned in the dub.
