:::Actually, Twineedle has been known to poison Steel-types, at least in Generation II (although the chances it was changed for later generations is highly unlikely...). Being a Bug-type move, it's the only known move that can inflict poison anywhere that isn't of the Poison-type (which Steel is immune to), hence it can poison a Steel-type. --Shiningpikablu252 18:11, 25 May 2008 (UTC)
::::The questions is if it still poisons, or if steel types are now immune. Also, Poison Point or something like that inflicts poison as an ability. I should make a multi-hit and Twineedle test team (when I get the time) to check some things that are uncertain. Gywall 18:40, 25 May 2008 (UTC)
Defense Column
Shuckle, Forretress, Crustle, Durant, Escavalier, Vespiqueen, Pinsir, Scizor, Armaldo. There are 9 Bug-type Pokémon with a defense stat of 100 or more, and Bug-type Pokémon have higher defense than special defense on average, yet the Bug-type "Defense" column consistently focuses on how low their defense stat is; in fact, their "low defense" is the only real reason given for Bugs to be defensively-flawed, which is preposterous. Well, it does talk about Bug/Flying-types' double weakness to rock, but that's only relevant to 19% of all Bug-types.

I'm honestly only an intermediate-level Pokémon player, so I'm not sure if I'm missing something here, but it seems as though the "Defense" portion of the Bug-type page is seriously outdated, to the point of blatantly irrelevant information. Someone with more experience/knowledge then me really needs to completely rewrite this column, and soon.
Psychic-types that take neutral damage from Bug-type moves are pretty rare
I removed the "(which are fairly common)" qualifier at the end of that part in the Offense section. Though six types resist Bug (Flying, Ghost, Fire, Steel, Poison, and Fighting), there are only a few Psychic-type Pokémon that take neutral damage from Bug-type moves: Lugia, Xatu, Sigilyph, Swoobat, Victini, Zen Mode Darmanitan, Metagross, Bronzong, Jirachi, Gallade and Medicham. Counting the pre-evolved types there are 17 total (Natu, Woobat, Beldum, Metang, Bronzor and Meditite), which is exactly ¼ of the 68 total Psychic-type Pokémon.

And of this 17, only 3-5 of them can fairly be considered common no matter what mode of play is being considered: Metagross, Bronzong, Gallade, and Medicham and Jirachi in order of relative relevance. While competitive standard play now allows Jirachi, no official Nintendo format or in-game mode has, which goes as well for Victini and especially Lugia. NFE Pokémon are by default not common, Zen Mode Darmanitan is only possible with a less-than-ideal HP percentage (especially for a slow Fire-type weak to Stealth Rock) and Xatu/Sigilyph/Swoobat are all rather uncommon in any mode of play.
Wormadam
The bug type number and percentages of pokemon is kind of silly. It has variables to account for multiple forms of wormadam, which I have two problems with:
1) If wormadam's additional forms are considered separate pokemon for how many bug types there are, then they should also be considered separate pokemon for the total of pokemon there are, reducing their alternate percentage 10% even.
2) If wormadamn's additional forms are counted on some merit other than their pokedex number (in this case, I would wager it's because of type combinations) Then pokemon that have alternate forms that fit this criteria, namely Rotom, should be counted in "total pokemon", dropping the percentage further (especially if it merely becomes forms with alternate movesets).

Basically, the line with wormadam is either unnecessary, or not given enough attention. TheHateHat (talk) 21:35, 19 December 2012 (UTC)
Characteristics
Bug Pokémon are usually amongst the first Pokémon types a Trainer can find in the wild, with the exception of Pokémon Black and White. They generally evolve at very early levels compared to most other Pokémon. The type varies from strong to weak. Depending on the Bug Pokémon, they can prove to be a nuisance with stat altering moves or hard hitting attacks such as Megahorn, X-Scissor, Signal Beam and Bug Buzz. There is only one Legendary Bug-type Pokémon, Genesect.

Offense
Offensively, they are somewhat flawed. They are effective against Psychic and Dark types, which are two types common in most teams; but their strength against the very common Grass type is reduced by the common Grass/Poison typing.

In the Generation I games, there were only three Bug-type moves (Leech Life, Twineedle, and Pin Missile); none of which were very powerful. Since then, the range (and average base power) of Bug-type moves has increased. However, since seven types resist Bug-type attacks, Bug-type attacks still don't deal a lot of damage to many types. The fact that they are resisted by Poison—a popular defensive type—causes further problems (though many Poison types also have a subtype that is weak to Bug—commonly Grass—which helps alleviate this issue). Furthermore, their advantage over Psychic types is compromised by the relatively common typing of Bug/Poison types; Psychic types with Bug-resistant types; and the high speed, special attack and wide movepools that many Psychic types have.
Despite these offensive flaws, the Bug type pairs effectively with Water and Ice.

Defense
Defensively, Bug types are still flawed, because of their low Defense and the fact that there are many that are part Flying, multiplying their weakness to Rock. In this way their resistance to Ground and Fighting, the two most effective types (in terms of number of type advantages), are of little use seeing as many Pokémon of both types can learn Rock moves.
Dual-type Bug/Flying and Bug/Poison Pokémon have an outstanding double resistance to Fighting, which can make up for their low Defense. They also have a double resistance to common Grass moves, meaning they would take very little damage from powerful moves such as Giga Drain, Energy Ball, or Petal Dance.

The Bug/Steel Pokémon prove particularly effective as they only have Fire weakness (although it's a double weakness) and eight resistances (including Poison immunity).

Contest properties
When used in Contests, Bug-type moves do not favor one Contest category.

Pokémon
As of Generation VI, there are 69 Bug-type Pokémon or 9.4% of all Pokémon (counting forms and Mega Evolutions that change typing as different Pokémon), making it the 6th most common type.
Trivia
* Generation V introduced the most Bug-type Pokémon of any Generation, with 18, and Generation VI introduced the fewest Bug-type Pokémon, with three.
* Generation IV introduced the most Bug-type moves of any Generation, with seven, and Generations II and III introduced the fewest Bug-type moves, with three.
* Statistically, the Bug type is the weakest; among the 18 elemental types, the Bug type has the lowest average base stat total (371.57). This may be a reference to the position of bugs in nature; they are small compared with other animals, and few of them are predators.
** However, Generation IV and V introduced several Bug-type Pokémon with higher base stat totals, even over 500, including one at Genesect.
* Even though Flying is a common secondary type among Bug-type Pokémon, the only Bug-type Pokémon that can learn the move Fly, Volcarona and Genesect, are not Flying types.
* Until Platinum, several Bug-type Pokémon, Shuckle, Kricketot, Burmy, Wormadam, and Combee, were unable to learn any Bug-type moves. Each of them is now able to learn Bug Bite by level, and Wormadam can learn Signal Beam by Move Tutor.
* Larvesta evolves at level 59, the highest among two-stage evolutionary lines and second-highest overall, only surpassed by Zweilous, which evolves at level 64.
* Until Generation IV, the only Bug moves with a power above 25 were Megahorn, Signal Beam, Silver Wind, and fury cutter, which made them extremely difficult to use offensively.
* The Flying type is one of the two types most commonly paired with the Bug type (along with Poison). However there are a number of Bug types, despite being able to fly, that are not Flying types, nor have the Ability Levitate. These include Beedrill, Venomoth, Heracross, Dustox, Volbeat, Illumise, and Volcarona.
* With the exception of Whirlipede, all mid-evolution Bug Pokémon are based on cocoons.
* String Shot is the only Bug-type status move that can miss.
* The Bug type was the most common 4× weakness in Generation I, with 11 Pokémon doubly weak to it, mainly due to Poison type having a weakness to it at the time.
* No Pokémon gains the Bug type upon evolving that did not already have it. It shares this distinction with the Normal type.
** Also, the Bug type is the only type to contain an evolution line consisting of a Surskit with a unique type combination that evolves into a Masquerain that lacks one.
Are we absolutely sure about the trivia that this exolution wouldve been impossible on any other games? There was a game called kirby tilt and tumble for the gameboy color that could tell when you were holding the game upside down. So it's conceivable that the technology for an evolution from holding the game upside down could've existed in Gen 2 if not earlier.
I was thinking it might be based on (the idea of) a vampire squid. It doesn't look like an actual vampire squid, but it does sort of look like a squid that was also a vampire Vienna Waltz (talk) 12:42, 13 July 2013 (UTC)

Malamar's Dark/Psychic typing and hypnotic powers remind me of the Illithids or mindflayers from Dungeons & Dragons. They are squid-headed humanoids with often purple-blue skin; they have psionic powers and can control others to do their bidding. Illithids have a history of being adapted for Japanese video games; there is a Mindflayer enemy in Final Fantasy as well. Of course, there's no telling what it's really based on besides just a squid. It'd be cool if we could get a designer interview discussing some of the origins of these designs like was done for some Pokémon in Generation V. Iamohjay (talk) 17:47, 13 July 2013 (UTC)

Malamar could also be a Giant Squid.Robbie (talk) 22:07, 14 July 2013 (UTC)

Malamar is clearly based on the "Vampire Squid" due to hynotic lights and its ability to turn itself inside out both key features to Malmar's design.(Malamar turning upside down instead of inside out) Also I want to note that Malamar's collar resembles an "Upturned Collar" similar to an actual vampire. The Vampire Squid's nickname is "vampire squid of Hell" hence the Dark type of Malamar. ProtoTurtle

:I'm not really seeing a very strong resemblance to the vampire squid (and that's the translation of its scientific name, not its nickname). Vampire squid are crimson in color; Malamar has no crimson on it at all. Vampire squid have distinctive blue eyes; Malamar's eyes are yellow. Vampire squid have rounded mantles, lack two longer tentacles, their tentacles are connected by membrane that forms a netlike area around the mouth, and they generally really don't look like squid at all (in fact, they're not actually true squid, nor octopi, but the only living member of their own order); Malamar is shaped very much like most true squid species. Also, Malamar turns itself upside-down, not inside-out (although "inside-out" is a misnomer--the vampire squid merely turns its arm cloak over the rest of its body). So I think it's safe to say Malamar is not based on a vampire squid, just (real) squid in general (in fact, I'd agree more with the idea that it could be inspired by Humboldt squid, which are notoriously vicious hunters and could explain the Dark typing). Lucentas (talk) 03:08, 22 September 2013 (UTC)

Malamar, and to some extent Inkay, could be based on the amanojaku. The amanojaku is supposedly the demon of contrariness, which could be connected to Malamar's upside-down body structure and its Ability Contrary, as well as its signature move, Topsy-Turvy. == Korean name for Malamar, possible Japanese name meaning ==

Its Korean name is 칼라마네로 Kallamanero.
* Transliteration of its Japanese name.
* From 칼라마리 kallamari, "calamari"
* 네로 nero could be from Nero, Roman Emperor
:: Seeing as its the same name in Japanese and Korean, and there's really no Korean word "네로", I greatly suspect it's supposed to be from Nero, Roman Emperor... akin to Empoleon/エンペルト being based on Napoleon Bonaparte. -- Nick15 (talk) 19:09, 20 July 2013 (UTC)
Aegislash (Japanese: ギルガルド Girugarudo) is a dual-type Pokémon.

It evolves from Doublade when exposed to a Dusk Stone. It is the final form of Honedge.

Aegislash has the ability to change forms during battle based on the moves it is using.

Biology
Aegislash's body is comprised of a golden sword with the blade pointing downwards. The edge of the blade is white and somewhat serrated near the tip. Its single eye, which is purple with a white, linear pupil, sits where the blade meets the hilt, where it is surrounded by black coloration. The handle is thick at its base, tapers as it progresses to the end, and is striated. Two cloth-like arms emerge from the sides of the hilt. Each arm is primarily black and ends in lavender, transitioned by a slight whorl between the two colors. It carries an ornate shield in at least one of its arms.

Aegislash is capable of Stance Change in the middle of battle, depending on what moves it uses. It carries out offensive moves in its Blade Forme, in which it carries its shield in its left arm and exposes its blade, which it uses to slash its opponents. Defensive moves are performed in its Shield Forme, in which it holds its shield up in front of its blade, with both of its arms crossed behind the shield.

It is said to be able to detect the innate qualities of leadership; legend has it that whoever Aegislash recognizes as a worthy leader is destined to become king. Indeed, this Pokémon has attended and served generations of kings. It is also known to use its spectral power to manipulate people and Pokémon alike. Aegislash is the only known Pokémon that can learn King's Shield.

Origin
Aegislash appears to be based on a possessed sword and shield. Its disposition to sense an owner's potential as leaders and kings, seems to draw inspiration from the ideas of legendary swords of European legend, such as Excalibur, Durandal, and the Sword of Damocles.
