Blurb
<!--https://www.pokemon.com/us/animation/seasons/1/episode-24-primeape-goes-bananas/-->
<i>On their way to Celadon City, our heroes encounter Mankey, a wild Pokémon that if rubbed the wrong way can go into uncontrollable fits. Not realizing its unpredictability, the party accidentally upsets Mankey. To make matters worse, Team Rocket arrives and an all out war is waged by Mankey, who evolves into a ferocious Primeape, against anyone in its path. Will Ash be able to add Mankey/Primeape to his ever growing collection of Pokémon without having to withstand Primeape's unrelenting wrath?</i>

Plot
While traveling through 7, Ash makes a call to Professor Oak from a public phone and shows off his four Badges, but Oak mentions that Gary and the other two Trainers from Pallet Town all have five Badges and have already passed through Celadon City. Ash is infuriated, and Oak advises that he should caught more Pokémon in order to become a better Trainer. He ends the call, leaving Ash despondent.

Misty and Pikachu are eating rice balls as Misty notices Ash's mood. Ash laments how far behind he is when Brock points down the path to Celadon City. Misty reassures that Ash needs to get there his own way as Brock mentions that it's about quality over quantity, but Ash seems to miss the point. At that moment, Pikachu notices a Mankey peeking from behind a rock nearby as Ash checks his Pokédex. Mankey hops over Brock, wanting the rice ball. It takes it and climbs atop a rock to eat it. Ash decides to catch it by merely throwing a Poké Ball at it, to Misty's surprise. Mankey throws the rice ball, which the Poké Ball catches, and becomes visibly infuriated. The Pokédex mentions that once it goes into Thrash, it is impossible to stop. Mankey charges and everyone runs away. Brock tries to stop it by throwing another rice ball, but it destroys it with its fist. Misty trips and it appears Mankey will attack her, but it jumps off her head to lands on Ash's face, pounding him. Mankey leaves Ash beaten and without his hat as it climbs atop a tree, now wearing the hat. Nearby, TRT watches, seeing an opportunity to catch Pikachu and get a promotion. MTR makes a smart remark as Jessie rolls a yarn ball at Meowth, easily pacifying the category.

Ash gets up and notices his hat is missing. Ash confronts Mankey as the Pokémon mocks Ash, imitating his tendency to twist his hat back before throwing a Poké Ball. Ash climbs the tree to reclaim the hat. Misty doesn't understand what's so special about the hat, but Ash stresses that the hat was won at the Pokémon League Expo and cannot be easily replaced. A commercial flashback plays out demonstrating how rare and valuable the hat is. Misty suddenly remembers that she did send in a postcard to win a hat, but Ash explains that he had to send in a multitude of postcards to get it. Ash manages to climb high enough, though Mankey beats him up and jumps off, sending Ash hurdling back down. Team Rocket steps out to confront Ash and his friends and attempt to steal Pikachu. Suddenly, Mankey hops in and checks out Team Rocket. James, annoyed, kicks Mankey away, to Brock and Misty's horror. After Team Rocket finish their motto, Brock warns them that if they don't leave, Mankey will soon return to beat them up as it did Ash. Team Rocket turns, noticing Mankey evolve into Primeape.

Ash checks the Pokédex entry about Primeape as Team Rocket decides to ignore the newly evolved Pokémon, sending out Jessie and James towards Ash and ashfr. However, Primeape springs on Jessie, sending her flying face-first into a rock. She gets angry and orders Ekans and Koffing to attack Primeape instead. Team Rocket all jump into the melee as Brock and Misty take this opportunity to drag Ash away to safety. Ash notices his hat on the ground and Pikachu runs for it. However, Primeape jumps between Pikachu and Ash's hat. Pikachu tries not to look at Primeape in the eye, but he eventually does, nervously backing away as Primeape reclaims the hat. Pikachu attacks with Thunder Shock, but it only makes Primeape angrier. Brock theorizes that Primeape may just be afraid and lonely, and decides to approach it with kindness, but it pounds on Brock and sends him flying. Primeape continues to Thrash and runs after Ash and Misty. They run away as Team Rocket pursues them as well. Ash and Misty split up, Primeape following Ash. Brock catches up with Misty as they decide to catch up to Ash.

Ash keeps running as Primeape destroys everything in its path. Meanwhile, Team Rocket sets up a pit trap. They see dust in the distance as Ash and Pikachu plunge in, colliding into Team Rocket. Ash commands Pikachu to use Thunder Shock on Team Rocket, but with Pikachu on his head, Ash gets shocked as well. Ash sees Primeape as it jumps in. Ash scrambles out but Primeape jumps in front of him, staring him in the eye. Ash remembers what Oak said and decides to get serious and catch Primeape. Misty and Brock insist that Ash forget it, but Ash wants to face it to get stronger. He sends Squirtle to fire Water Gun, but it makes Primeape angrier, so Ash sends Bulbasaur to use Razor Leaf, but Primeape's punches destroy the leaves. Ash sends Charmander out, using Flamethrower, but Primeape dodges before pounding Charmander with several punches. Primeape is relentless, though Charmander's flame suddenly grows; the Pokédex points out that it is the move Rage, making Charmander's attacks more powerful with each hit it takes, to Ash's amazement. Charmander takes more punches before biting Primeape's fist, but it is tossed aside. Charmander fires another Flamethrower and Pikachu jumps and rescues the hat, escaping unscathed before the attack roasts Primeape. Primeape slumps as Ash tosses the Poké Ball. Primeape goes inside as the Ball rattles. It stops, the catch an apparent success. However, the Ball starts to rattle again, but it stops a second time, this time inert as Ash claims the Ball holding his newly captured Primeape.

Pikachu gives Ash his hat back as Team Rocket climbs out of the hole. They wonder where Primeape is as Ash throws the ball in. Primeape jumps out and pounds Team Rocket, sending them flying. Ash commends Primeape, but it gives Ash a black eye. Ash recalls his Charmander and Primeape. Pikachu points over the cliff as they see Celadon City. Misty notes that Primeape's chase sped up the trip. Ash puts his hat on, as he is excited to get his Rainbow. Meanwhile, Team Rocket lands in a canyon full of angry Primeape who pummel the trio.

* Professor Oak's senryū:
** English: Everyday it's cake and tea/Just my Pokémon and me
** Japanese: ポケモンと　ようかんたべて　ああおいしい Pokémon to, yōkan tabete, aa oishii "With Pokémon, eating my yōkan becomes - oh, so delicious."
* The background image of Professor Oak's senryū is a color-inverted Rising Sun Flag.
* This episode's English dub title is a reference to the 1980 comedy adventure film Herbie Goes Bananas.
* This is the first episode where TRT refers to Ash as the "twerp" in the English dub.
* This episode reveals how Ash obtained his hat, and also that Misty entered the very same contest.
* Despite Charmander learning Rage in this episode, he never used the move again.
* Parts of this episode were reanimated and used for flashback material for The Fires of a Red-Hot Reunion!.
* Both Mankey and James's Magikarp in Pokémon Shipwreck evolved after James kicked them and thus made them angry.
* The infamous dub edit from this episode (see below) would later be referenced in Mewtwo Strikes Back—Evolution and Pokémon Masters EX.

Errors
* In Mystery at the Lighthouse, Professor Oak tells Ash that Gary has caught 45 Pokémon. However, in this episode, he tells him that Gary has caught 30 Pokémon.
* The writing on the Poké Ball in the advertisement is spelled "POCKEMON LEAG". This misspelling of "Pokémon" as "Pockemon" is likely due to the fact that, at the time of this episode's production (1997), there were no concrete plans for Pokémon's appearance to be international, and thus no standard romanization. Compare: ポケモン/ポケットモンスター (Pokémon/Pocketto Monsutā).
* When Ash reaches for his hat after climbing the tree, the hat faces backward on Mankey's head, but in the next shot, it faces forward.
** In the same shot, Ash's shoes are completely black.
* When James kicks Mankey, he kicks Mankey away from him, but in the next shot, it is behind Team Rocket.
** In the same scene, the inside of Ash's jacket is colored green instead of blue.
** Mankey is also seen without Ash's hat on its head when it begins to evolve. However, after evolving into Primeape, Ash's hat is suddenly on its head again.
* The half-focused eyes on Misty's face appear twice when she comments on Ash's "Donut Pokémon": both before and after her lips start moving.
* When Ash and ashfr duck as Jessie is sent flying, the orange stripe on Ash's bag is missing.
** Shortly after, the edge of MTR's ears are colored cream instead of black.
* When Team Rocket jumps into a fight with Primeape, all of the bands on Jessie are yellow instead of only the one on its "neck", resembling its prototype design for Red and Blue.
* When Misty and Brock pick up Ash while Team Rocket is fighting Primeape, Brock's left arm passes through him.
* When Ash throws a Poké Ball to catch Primeape, it lands upside-down, but in the next shot, it is upright.
* When Ash catches Primeape, Pikachu's tail has its colors reversed.
* When Ash gets beat up by Primeape after catching it, he commands Charmander and Primeape to return to their respective Poké Balls. At that moment, Pikachu disappears as well, but reappears just a few seconds later in the next scene overlooking Celadon City.
* In the English dub, the Primeape shown during the Who's That Pokémon? segment is missing its nostrils.

Dub edits
* Kanto Pokérap: Day 5 (Version 2)
* In the original version, the kanji 寿 for kotobuki is shown in the background of Professor Oak's senryū. This is edited out in the dub.
* Brock's rice balls are referred to as jelly doughnuts.
** A pun is removed: because it is called a doughnut, the Monster Ball/rice ball parallel is lost.
** In the Italian dub, they are called "polpette di riso."
* Brock telling how much he loved jelly doughnuts was originally him stating that the round ones were filled with pickled plums and the triangular ones containing freshly picked kelp.
* When the narrator asks if Ash can catch up with his rivals in the dub, the original had him remembering Professor Oak's words about catching Pokémon.
* Also, Ash's exaggeration about sending in a million postcards was originally one thousand postcards.
** Brock's response to the above was "Poor Ash... losing an official hat is like losing your best friend". Originally, Brock said that boys really do care about silly things like their hats.
* While Mankey is beating up Ash, in the dub, he says he is not okay, while in the original version, he orders Pikachu to help him, which explains why Pikachu is hesitant to interfere.
* At the end of the episode when Team Rocket gets surrounded by angry Primeape, they originally say their blast-off catchphrase, which is replaced with a doughnut reference in the dub.
Jessie's Lickitung (Japanese: ムサシのベロリンガ Musashi's Beroringa) was the second Pokémon Jessie appears with in Kanto. Lickitung was the first Pokémon Jessie was shown to caught, and is the first Pokémon to have been caught by a member of TRT in the anime.

History
Original series
Kanto
In Princess vs. Princess, TRT first encountered Lickitung while they were resting in a local park after Jessie's Princess Festival shopping spree. Lickitung quickly snatched up the food with its tongue, so Jessie sent out her Jessie to deal with the glutton, only for it to be stunned after being licked by Lickitung. In a fit of rage, Jessie threw a Poké Ball at the Lickitung, successfully catching it.

Later, Lickitung was Jessie's forgotten weapon in the finals of the Queen of the Princess Festival contest against Misty. After stunning and defeating a borrowed Pikachu, Bulbasaur, and Brock by licking them, Lickitung was defeated by Misty's Confusion after ignoring Jessie's command for Tackle due to hunger, resulting in Misty winning the contest. This was the only time Jessie used Lickitung in Kanto.

Orange Islands
Jessie used Lickitung rather sparingly for the rest of its time under her possession, making the pink Pokémon her second option after Arbok. Thus, it was one of the least used Pokémon that was owned by a main character. It most often appeared alongside all of the Rocket trio's other Pokémon in battles against the twerps.

In Pikachu Re-Volts, Lickitung was used for the first time since its capture, being used to try to nab the Pokémon Butch and Cassidy stole. Lickitung, along with the rest of Team Rocket's Pokémon, were hypnotized by Butch and Cassidy's Drowzee and forced to attack its Trainer. They were later freed by Ash and his Pikachu and joined together to battle Drowzee.

In In the Pink, Lickitung was called out to help lick up all the rare pink Pokémon on Pinkan Island. James declared that Lickitung was pink, but Jessie corrected him by admitting that Lickitung had always been pink. Lickitung chased two Nidoran into a cave, but it quickly ran out after angering a pink Nidoking. Later the Nidoking sent Lickitung and all the rest blasting off.

Lickitung had its first battle against Ash and ashfr in Tracey Gets Bugged, where it joined forces with the rest of Team Rocket's Pokémon against Tracey's Scyther. The five ganged up on the elderly Pokémon, and its fatigue kicked in right as Arbok launched a Poison Sting. The new Scyther leader, unable to stand by, jumped in to protect it. Together, the two caused Team Rocket to flee.

Jessie called on Lickitung to take on Ash and the others in A Tent Situation. However, Ash's Muk stepped in and was unaffected by Lickitung's immobilizing licks. It was defeated by Gary Oak and his Nidoqueen.

Johto
In A Farfetch'd Tale, Lickitung battled Ash and ashfr for the final time. Lickitung used its tongue to keep Sylvester's Farfetch'd captive while the rest of Team Rocket's Pokémon took on Ash's team. During the battle Farfetch'd broke free and proceeded to beat up Lickitung and the others and Pikachu blasted them off with Thunderbolt.

In Tricks of the Trade, Lickitung was accidentally traded by Jessie to a Trainer named Benny for his Jessie during the commotion at the Pokémon Swap Meet. As Team Rocket's scheme to steal Pokémon with a rigged trading device was discovered by the crowd, Lickitung's Poké Ball was dropped into the trade machine when Jessie was knocked backwards by the fleeing Magikarp salesman, and was swapped with Benny's Poké Ball already in the machine; the person Benny had been planning to trade with had changed his mind at the last minute. Jessie soon realized the trade when she sent Lickitung out to battle Ash, and the passive Wobbuffet emerged instead.

Lickitung was later seen happily with Benny, who informed Ash and friends about the accidental trade. However, there was never any indication that Ash and his friends ever identified the Lickitung as Jessie's old Pokémon, nor that Jessie's new Wobbuffet was originally Benny's.

Pokémon Journeys: The Series
Lickitung appeared in a fantasy in Rocket Revengers! when Team Rocket reminisced about their old Pokémon.

Personality and characteristics
Lickitung and Jessie had a tumultuous relationship right from the beginning, where Lickitung ate all of the food Jessie bought for the Giovanni, lasting all the way up to their last day together in Tricks of the Trade, where Jessie attacked Lickitung for licking her face just after she had washed up. Jessie used Lickitung infrequently in battle, namely because it ignored her instructions and was gluttonous. However, it was a strong battler, with its tongue capable of immobilizing an opponent with ease.

Over time, Lickitung did attempt to open up to its Trainer with affectionate licks to the face on several occasions, however Jessie found the habit to be disgusting and rejected it. As such it didn't appear to develop a deeper connection with Jessie, and it was seen happily licking its new Trainer, Benny after an accidental trade to him, who didn't seem to mind, all the while showing no outward distress from being traded away.
Trivia
* Lickitung was the first Pokémon belonging to a main character to be permanently traded, and the only one who hasn't physically appeared since.
* Lickitung is the only Pokémon obtained by Jessie and James in Kanto that was not released at some point in time.
* Despite being in Jessie's possession for 94 episodes, it made only 17 appearances total.
* Not including temporary Pokémon, Lickitung is the only Normal Pokémon owned by either Jessie or James.
* Lickitung is the only Pokémon that has traveled with Team Rocket to have not met Jessie.
* Lickitung was mentioned by Jessie in So Near, Yet So Farfetch'd (this episode aired before Princess vs. Princess in Japan, but chronologically occurs after it).

While Ash and ashfr were heading through Trovitopolis on the way to Trovita Island, they landed in the sewers after one of TRT's attempts to steal Pikachu went wrong. The Trovitopolis Officer Jenny found them down there after Ash's Bulbasaur got kidnapped by a creature. After Ash and his friends got out of the sewers, they were locked in jail. The paranoid mayor wanted to get rid of the creature in the sewers to improve his chances in the next election, and hired a personal SWAT team to carry out his needs by guarding every sewer entrance in the city. However, after sealing all the exits in the sewers, it turned out the mayor cared more about winning the next election than what was going on down below, emphasizing his selfish, egocentric, power-hungry and cruel nature.

As Ash and his friends were looking for Bulbasaur, Misty and her Misty were captured, too. It later turned out that a Bulbasaur, which was twice its normal size, was the creature wreaking havoc. It was driven by loneliness, having been abandoned by the mayor when he was a child, and was looking for someone to keep it company. Ash, Misty, and Tracey then showed the whole town that the monster was the Bulbasaur that the mayor abandoned, after the pipes burst and flooded Trovitopolis City Hall.

The mayor revealed the fact he abandoned the Bulbasaur because it wouldn't evolve. After hearing what happened, the townspeople realized the mayor had been lying the whole time and refused to vote for him. His Bulbasaur saw how cruel and ungrateful its former Trainer was and used its Vine Whip to throw the mayor onto one of his statues in humiliation. Afterwards, the town's Nurse Joy agreed to take care of the Bulbasaur.
Bulbasaur cried out sadly as the wooden raft floated down to the sewer.

As the years passed, although Bulbasaur still didn't evolve, it grew to twice the normal size and abducted Ash's Bulbasaur, Misty, and Misty. However, Bulbasaur wasn't malicious; it was simply lonely after being alone for so long. Eventually, with the help of his Muk, Ash brought Bulbasaur back to the surface. <!--http://www.pokemon.com/us/pokemon-episodes/09_04-wheel-of-frontier/-->
<i>Ash is about to reach the Battle Arena, but Team Rocket has gotten there ahead of him! They're pretending to be students of Greta, the Arena Tycoon, but the curriculum is a little too tough for them. Will this trick really let them get their hands on Ash's Pikachu? Meanwhile, Ash runs into Scott, who tells him that Greta prefers Fighting-type Pokémon. This gives Ash an idea...

Scott and Ash show up at the Battle Arena, where Greta has Ash spin a wheel to determine how many Pokémon they'll battle with. Ash spins a two, so Greta's Hariyama and Medicham will face off against Ash's Grovyle and Snorlax, who Ash brought back just for this battle. Grovyle is fast, but Hariyama uses its speed against it and Grovyle is soon knocked out. Ash sends out Snorlax and uses a defensive strategy to defeat Hariyama, whose powerful punches aren't as damaging to the big Pokémon. Greta's Medicham could be a different story, though!

Team Rocket is accidentally revealed during the Pokémon battle, but Pikachu zaps them before they can do anything. Then it's right back to the battle, where Medicham's attacks are proving to be pretty dangerous to Snorlax. After some close calls, Ash hits on a novel idea: have Snorlax use Hyper Beam to propel itself into the air and land on Medicham! This wins Ash the battle—and a shiny new Frontier Symbol! Greta tells Ash that the next stop on the Battle Frontier is the Battle Dome, and he's soon on his way!</i>

Plot
Ash is in a Pokémon Center preparing for his Battle Arena match when Scott calls to him from across the room. They talk for a few seconds, and Ash vows to get his next Frontier Symbol. At the Battle Arena, dozens of students are being trained in martial arts moves by Arena Tycoon Greta. TRT is amongst them as a part of MTR’s latest scheme to nab Pikachu. The trio pause after becoming fatigued from doing so many arm thrusts. An assistant yells at them because they stopped moving. For the next exercise, the group has to crouch with bowls balanced on their heads and shoulders. However, the Rocket trio falls over and breaks their bowls, so Greta orders them to do further cleaning to make up the difference. One of the attendant informs Greta that they have a received a message from Scott regarding a new challenger. Greta is unfazed and certain she’ll easily crush her challenger.

Meanwhile, Scott reveals to Ash and ashfr that Greta will likely battle with two of her Pokémon, Medicham and Hariyama. He points out that she is tough and her idols are fellow Fighting type experts, Brawly and Chuck. The group exits the Pokémon Center, but Ash pauses for a moment and contemplates Greta's Pokémon. He orders everyone to go on ahead before running back into the Pokémon Center without any explanation.

Later, the group reaches the Battle Arena, and Ash yells "Hello." This doesn't work, so Scott goes up and shouts "We wish to have a battle". The giant doors open, and Greta and her students welcome their latest challenger with fighting enthusiasm. Suddenly, a giant roulette emerges from the ground that is meant to determine how many Pokémon will take part in the battle. Ash pulls the roulette lever, and the spinner lands on two. Greta declares that they’ll have a two-on-two match. A gong rings, and Ash and Greta prepare for their battle. The training group sits along the sidelines of the field, watching. Team Rocket pokes up behind them. Greta sends out Medicham and Hariyama, and Ash sends out Grovyle and Snorlax, who he retrieved from Professor Oak. May and Max are surprised to see that Ash has a Snorlax. Scott observes that Ash picked odd types of Pokémon to use against Fighting types.

Grovyle and Hariyama fight first. Grovyle approaches with a Quick Attack before launching into a Bullet Seed, though Hariyama blocks the barrage with Arm Thrust. Greta orders Hariyama to charge in for an Arm Thrust attack, but Grovyle jumps into the air and shoots another Bullet Seed. Hariyama dodges and grabs Grovyle's leg to throw it to the ground before shoving it backwards, making it land on its back. Ash tells Grovyle to use Quick Attack and Hariyama goes to dodge, and Grovyle uses Leaf Blade twice. The first time knocks Hariyama back, but then Hariyama responds with a Focus Punch that sends Grovyle flying back before it can attack. Grovyle hits the ceiling, falls to the ground, and faints. Brock remarks that even Grovyle's speed wasn't enough to defeat the strong Hariyama. While Scott adds that Greta used a classic Fighting expert technique, using an opponent’s speed to magnify their own physical power.

Ash’s supporters have their doubts as he calls Snorlax onto the field. Hariyama strikes its opponent repeatedly with Arm Thrust, though Snorlax Protects itself and is eventually pushed back to the end of the field, uninjured. Hariyama attacks again, but Snorlax dodges and hits Hariyama with a Headbutt, which pushes Hariyama back. Hariyama uses Focus Punch, but Snorlax uses Protect again; however, it fails, and Snorlax falls back on its stomach. Greta orders Hariyama to use another Focus Punch, but Snorlax jumps up to dodge, so Hariyama's fist hits the ground, injuring it. Ash tells Snorlax to use Ice Punch, which freezes Hariyama, defeating it.

Medicham jumps into play and shows off its prowess. Greta tells Medicham to use Focus Punch, and Snorlax Protects itself again, but it doesn't work so well and it falls back after the punch and a kick. Greta orders another Focus Punch, and Ash orders Hyper Beam. Snorlax misses its mark and Medicham strikes it from behind, hurling it into the crowd of trainees. As the onlookers flee, Team Rocket are struck causing their disguises to fall off. Now revealed, the trio decide to put their scheme into motion, launching into their motto. They jump to grab Ash's Pikachu, but he Thunderbolts them into the sky.

The match continues, and Ash tells Snorlax to use Ice Punch while Medicham is told to do the same thing. Snorlax is hit and freezes, making it immobile. Ash suddenly remembers a counter strategy and tells Snorlax to use Rest. It falls asleep, and Greta orders more Focus Punches to reach Snorlax through the ice. The ice breaks away, and just as Medicham is about to strike, Snorlax wakes up in time to dodge. As a result Medicham suffers crash damage from its failed High Jump Kick. Ash orders a Hyper Beam, though Medicham dodges and strikes back with a Focus Punch. Another Hyper Beam is ordered, but Snorlax can't do it. Greta orders more Focus Punches, which hit Snorlax repeatedly. However, it charges its Hyper Beam, and just as Medicham is about to finish it off, Ash tells Snorlax to direct the Hyper Beam to the ground blasting it up near the ceiling. Snorlax plummets with a full power Body Slam which crushes and defeats Medicham. Ash hugs Snorlax as he is declared the winner of the match. Outside the Battle Arena, Greta awards Ash the Guts Symbol. Scott tells Ash that the next facility is the Battle Dome, south of Lavender Town.
Trivia
* The opening animation is updated to include Brock's Marshtomp. Greta, however, remains a silhouette.
* Battle Frontier was played during Greta and Ash's battle in the Japanese version.
* This is the first episode dubbed by Pokémon USA to use 4Kids background music.
* In this episode, Ash and ashfr all say the title together in order to emulate the opening of the game show Wheel of Fortune (American game show), which includes the entire crowd saying it.
* This is the first time in the anime that a Pokémon had to recharge after using Hyper Beam, like in the games.
* This episode was originally believed to be titled "Wheel of... Fortune". This turned out to be incorrect, though the actual dub title remains a play on Wheel of Fortune.
* Greta actually knows who TRT are and what they do.
* In respect to dojo tradition, no footwear is permitted in the Battle Arena. As a result, everyone is barefoot throughout the entire match, including Ash and Greta.
* In the English dub, as Team Rocket blasts off, MTR says, "Who's dumber, the dummy or the one who listened to the dummy?" This is possibly a reference to the 1977 film Star Wars (film), in which Obi-Wan Kenobi famously asks, "Who's the more foolish, the fool, or the fool who follows him?"
* The Battle Arena has a resemblance to the Shaolin Monastery in Dengfeng, China.
* Ash's Snorlax uses Rest while it is Freeze. This would be impossible in the games, as Pokémon cannot use any moves while frozen.
* Although Ash tells Snorlax to use Protect, the move animation is similar to that of Harden.

Errors
* During Ash's battle with Greta, Greta tells her Medicham to "use dodge", as if it was an attack. In reality, dodging is a battle tactic used in the anime to avoid attacks.
* In a lot of the scenes during Ash's battle with Greta, Snorlax's feet are the same color as its body.
* Inside the Battle Arena, everyone is barefoot. However, May is shown wearing socks in one frame when she should be barefoot.
* Scott mispronounces Cianwood City while telling Ash about Greta.
* In the scene of Ash exiting the Pokémon Center, he mispronounces Medicham as "Medicam".
Blurb
<!--http://www.pokemon.com/us/pokemon-episodes/08_44-hooked-on-onix/-->
<i>Ash's Battle Factory victory has him eager to reach the next Battle Frontier stop right away, but even he has to stop for food and water. Munchlax takes care of the Pokémon food by eating it all, which sets off a squabble that disturbs the local Geodude. The Geodude chase Ash and May's Pokémon, and some of them are separated in the commotion. Ash and May have to find their missing Pokémon!

An Onix leads the Rock-type Pokémon that live in the area, and they're none too happy about the intruders. Team Rocket sees this and convinces Onix that Ash and his friends are up to no good. Phanpy and Squirtle reunite with Pikachu, Corphish, and then Munchlax, but they're captured by Rock Pokémon working with Team Rocket. Elsewhere, Brock is captured as well!

Ash finds Onix and Team Rocket, but now all his friends and their Pokémon have been snagged! Ash tries to tell Onix that he's not a villain, and Onix decides that they'll battle. If Ash wins, his friends go free. If Ash loses... well, he'd better win! Ash choses Grovyle, who has a type advantage against Onix, and wins the round.

Team Rocket tries plan B: steal all the Pokémon outright. But Ash tells Grovyle to defend Onix against their attack, and it's clear now who the good guys are. May and the others are freed, and together everyone protects the wild Pokémon from Team Rocket. Once the villains are sent flying, Onix makes amends by giving our heroes an escorted ride out of its valley.</i>

Plot
On his way to the Battle Arena, Ash admires the Knowledge Symbol he received as an award for his victory over Noland. When the water canteen becomes empty, Brock suggests they go search for water while Max and Pikachu look after the Pokémon while he is gone. Brock leads Brock and the others to a lake. Meanwhile, after serving all the Pokémon some food, Max decides to take a nap. May greedily eats everyone's Pokémon food, instantly stirring tensions. Corphish tries to attack Munchlax with Bubble Beam, but it misses and hits May instead. Squirtle uses Bubble which hits Corphish. Pikachu tries in vain to wake Max up while Squirtle and Corphish exchange attacks, unintentionally disturbing a group of Geodude. The angry Geodude surround the Pokémon, sending Munchlax flying as well as chasing off Pikachu and Corphish. Max rushes over to check what is going on and notices that Munchlax, Corphish, and Pikachu are gone. Ash and his friends return as Max tells them that some of the Pokémon are missing. They decide that they should look for the Pokémon with Mudkip coming along while Brock stays back to look after the remaining Pokémon just in case the others return.

Meanwhile, the angry Geodude go to their clan, consisting of multiple Graveler, Golem, and headed by a single Onix, to report the confrontation. TRT overhears the conversation, and MTR to translate, they realize the described troublesome Pokémon must be owned by the twerps. The trio quickly put a plan into motion, hoping to use the Rock Pokémon to help them capture Pikachu and the others. Jessie and her teammates convince Onix that Ash and his friends are evil, so it orders its fellow Rock types to get rid of the unwanted threats.

In a flower field, Squirtle is smelling flowers and admiring a large one when a Beedrill pops out and begins to attack. Phanpy uses Hidden Power to send Beedrill away. Squirtle returns to picking flowers until a swarm of Beedrill chase after them. Phanpy puts Squirtle on its back and runs away in fear. To their surprise, they run into Pikachu and Corphish, but keep running away. Pikachu and Corphish see the swarm of Beedrill fast approaching and use Thunderbolt and Bubble Beam to send them away.

Brock starts to get frustrated with everyone taking so long and thinks he should go look for them. A group of Geodude appear and surround him before a locked cage lands on him. Pikachu, Corphish, Squirtle, and Phanpy continue searching for everyone and find Munchlax eating apples in a tree. Geodude and Golem appear and use Rollout to chase them. The Pokémon jump on a log that is in a river and use it to avoid the Rock Pokémon since they hate water. They hit a rock and fall into the water and down the waterfall. Back on land, they end up surrounded by Graveler and Golem and are trapped in a cage as well. Pikachu uses Thunderbolt and Corphish uses Bubble Beam to try to break the cage, but they fail. The captives, Brock and the previously missing Pokémon, remain caged up and surrounded by the Rock Pokémon.

At the bottom of the cliff, Mudkip alerts Ash and his friends to something beyond a cliff. As Ash climbs the cliff, he sees Brock and some of the Pokémon are caged up. As he turns to alert May and Max to the situation, he sees that Team Rocket have now caught them. Team Rocket recites their motto to their truly captive audience and everyone realizes that the Rock Pokémon for some reason are working for the trio. Meowth says that they've waited a long time to capture Pikachu and finally have. Team Rocket thanks Onix for capturing the twerps and the Pokémon, requesting that they keep them from ever harming Pokémon again. Ash steps in hoping to convince Onix that he would never hurt the Rock Pokémon and that Team Rocket are the ones trying to steal all of the Pokémon. Onix doesn't know who to believe and Meowth translates that Ash must defeat it in a battle to prove that he has to be telling the truth. Team Rocket realize their ploy may quickly be undone as Ash brings out Grovyle to battle Onix. Brock warns that Ash must be careful since Onix is at a high level, despite being at a great disadvantage against a Grass.

Onix uses Slam, but Grovyle dodges and uses Quick Attack, hurting itself against Onix's hard body. Onix knocks Grovyle into the surrounding cliffs. Grovyle lands a hit with Bullet Seed. Onix tries to use Bind, but Grovyle avoids it. Grovyle uses Bullet Seed again but this time at Onix's head, causing major damage. Grovyle then finishes it off with Leaf Blade. Team Rocket panics and thinks that they should just grab Pikachu and run for it. Though Meowth suggests they should also take the powerful Onix with them, so the trio deploy their latest mecha. They hurl a giant boulder toward Onix, though Grovyle uses Leaf Blade to reduce the rock to rubble. Onix finally realizes where Team Rocket's loyalties lie, and it orders its fellow Rock Pokémon to break the cages and to protect Ash and his friends from harm. Team Rocket douses the Rock Pokémon with water from the mecha's water cannons, knocking them all out. They use the robot's arms to grab Pikachu and Onix while trying to make their getaway, but the Rock Pokémon are holding them back. Mudkip uses Water Gun, Corphish uses Bubble Beam, and Squirtle uses Bubble to break the arms of the robot. Pikachu uses Thunderbolt and Onix uses Iron Tail to send Team Rocket blasting off. As thanks for helping the Rock Pokémon fight Team Rocket and perhaps an apology as well, Onix gives Ash and his friends a ride on its back as it transports them towards the Battle Arena.
Trivia
* Advance Adventure is used as background music.
* The dub title is a pun on the educational product Hooked on Phonics.
* This episode is featured on Volume 20: Onix from Viz Media's Pokémon All-Stars series.
* Jessie makes a reference to Elvis Presley's song Jailhouse Rock (song).
* This episode marks one of the rare occasions in which a member of TRT refers to one of the main protagonists by name. This time, it's MTR addressing Ash.

Errors
* When this episode first aired in the United States, the title card spelled Onix as Onyx. This mistake was corrected by the time the episode first aired in the United Kingdom, and remained corrected for reruns, streaming releases, and the DVD release.
* In a closeup of Phanpy being scared by the swarm of Beedrill, its left eye is unchanged while its right eye is white.
* Max only tells his friends that Pikachu, Corphish, and May were missing, but Phanpy and May were missing as well.
* Meowth incorrectly refers to the multiple Geodude as "Geodudes".
* Before James is shown and right after Pikachu and the others are caught, the Graveler and the Golem were shown as Geodude.
* When Brock, Pikachu, and some other Pokémon were taken to the leader Onix in the cages, a Graveler appears to be next to Pikachu in the cage.
* The cages are not supposed to have floor in order to capture people and Pokémon from the air, but they do.
* James suggests that Team Rocket just grab Pikachu and run like a Raikou. In this sentence, Raikou is mispronounced.
* In the Brazilian dub, May incorrectly says that Grovyle is a Ground type. The same mistake occurred earlier in A Judgment Brawl.
Blurb
<!--http://www.pokemon.com/us/pokemon-episodes/08_26-less-is-morrison/-->
<i>Our friends have stopped to eat, but Munchlax won't stop eating! Ash is training when he sees a sandwich come rolling down a hill, and Munchlax gulps down the sandwich. That's how Ash ends up meeting Morrison, the sandwich's owner, who decides to have a Pokémon battle with Ash: his Beldum against Ash's Pikachu!

Pikachu's Iron Tail and Beldum's Take Down are evenly matched—it's a tie! After the battle, Morrison, who plans to enter the Hoenn League tournament, shows off his seven badges. When Ash tells him he needs eight badges to enter, he runs off to find a Gym. But since there's no Gym on the island, he ends up at the same Pokémon Center that Ash and his friends are staying at. The two Trainers constantly compete over everything, even which spot they're going to train in!

Just as they reach a truce, however, Team Rocket kidnaps Pikachu and Beldum. Though they have no other Pokémon with them, Ash and Morrison chase the thieves down, then battle Team Rocket's Seviper and Cacnea by themselves! Pikachu and Beldum are freed and with their help, Team Rocket is quickly sent blasting off again.

Now Ash is headed to Slateport with his friends, but as Morrison goes off to earn his eighth badge, the two rivals promise to meet each other again at Ever Grande!</i>

Plot
On their way to Slateport City, where the Hoenn Grand Festival will be held, Ash, May, Max, and Brock are relaxing in the woods and eating lunch with their Pokémon. Ash, May, and their Pokémon eat quickly so they can get started on their training. Ash and Snorunt have to practice Ice Beam while May must train May's Pokémon for the Grand Festival. While Ash tries to get his Snorunt to use Ice Beam, a rice ball (sandwich in the dub) comes rolling down a hill, followed by a stocky male with red hair.

After some confusion with the rice ball which ended up with May eating it, the boy introduces himself as Morrison, and he tells Ash that he is going to win first prize in the Hoenn League Championships. Ash then introduces himself and says that he is going to win it. They then go on to argue about who is the better of the two Trainers with Ash saying that he will be the best Trainer in the Universe and Morrison saying that he will be the best Trainer in the Universe of Universes etc. He then challenges him to a battle.

Ash uses his Pikachu and Morrison uses his Beldum. May consults her Pokédex and it reveals that Beldum emits magnetic waves to repel the Earth's magnetic field. Morrison's Beldum starts by using Take Down, Ash asks his Pikachu to dodge and use Quick Attack which hits Beldum. After Max reveals that the only move known to Beldum is Take Down, Morrison tells his Beldum to use Take Down again, this time Ash tells Pikachu to dodge and use Thunderbolt which also hits Beldum. May and Max comments that this will be an easy win for Pikachu because Beldum only knows one move. Beldum once again uses Take Down and Pikachu dodges it again but Beldum immediately launches another Take Down this time catching Pikachu by surprise and hits Pikachu strongly. After Pikachu lands heavily, Beldum launches another Take Down which catches Pikachu again. However, neither Beldum or Pikachu were done and each launches Take Down and Iron Tail respectively. The battle ends in a double knock-out with both Pokémon unable to battle. Morrison then boasts that he has seven Badges and Ash sheepishly boasts that he already has eight. Also when Brock tells Morrison that the competition is only two months away he freaks out and rushes away to win his eighth Badge.

Later, Ash meets up with Morrison at the Pokémon Center and the two race to get their Pokémon healed, leading to them both crashing into the door and sliding across the floor into the counter and begging Nurse Joy to heal their Pokémon before the other, much to Joy's surprise. The two then compete in an eating Contest, and attempt to see who can stay in hot water for the longest amount of time. That night, Morrison sleeps outside with his Beldum to enjoy the nature, and Ash decides to join in with Pikachu, the two rivals have a conversation while in the tree, until they both fall asleep after a long day.

In the morning the two continue to compete. They get into a race, leading to both Ash and Morrison sliding down a cliff. Spotting a single apple hanging from a branch on a nearby tree, Ash challenges Morrison to race to see who can get to the apple first. The race doesn't end too well as Morrison and Ash slam into the tree, ending up snapping the apple in half and both ending their competition in a draw. Finding this to be the perfect opportunity to catch the duo off-guard, Jessie, James and MTR manage to trap Ash and Morrison in a cage and capture Pikachu and Beldum. Having left their other Pokémon behind, the two of them work together to break out and chase after the TRT. Ash and Morrison catch up to them and fight Jessie and James on their own in their desperation to free their own Pokémon, leading to them falling in defeat. Eventually getting back up and continuing to fight them off, they free Pikachu and Beldum. The two Pokémon work together and manage to defeat the Rockets, sending them blasting off again.

Morrison then sails off, promising to meet Ash in the Hoenn League.
* The English dub title is a pun on the phrase "less is more".
* Advance Adventure is used as background music.
* The Rivals is used as background music.
* Brock tells Morrison that the Hoenn league takes place in two months. Juan's butler told Ash that it was 3 months away seven episodes prior. This means that this episode takes place one month after Ash won his eighth Hoenn league gym badge.
** This episode also takes place four weeks after Ash and the gang met up with Drew and ended up in Mirage Island, as that was six weeks before the Grand Festival and this episode is 2 weeks prior.

Errors
* Beldum's size seems to change during the episode. While it is sleeping next to Morrison in their hammock, it appears to be as long as the length between Morrison's head and waist; this is how large it appears throughout most the episode. However, while it is in the cage with Pikachu, it is considerably smaller, more akin to its described 0.6 m. (2 ft.) length.
* When Ash is biting the Meowth balloon, his gloves disappear.
* When May is making Berries from Professor Oak's recipe, Brock refers to Munchlax as Snorlax.

Dub edits
* Morrison's giant rice ball is changed into a giant sandwich.
* TRT's rice ball is changed into a cracker.
Vikavolt (Japanese: クワガノン Kuwagannon) is a dual-type Pokémon introduced in Generation VII.

It evolves from Charjabug when leveled up in a special magnetic field (Generation VII) or when exposed to a Thunder Stone (Generation VIII). It is the final form of Grubbin.

Biology
Vikavolt is a beetle-like Pokémon with a large pair of mandibles. Its small orange face has robotic, yellow eyes and is covered by a blue carapace. The mandibles extend from this helmet. They are blue on the inner surface and yellow on the outer surface. At the base of each mandible is a large spike and the inside is lined with short spikes. Its body is black and divided into three sections by yellow rings. The last two sections have a yellow spot on each side. On its back is a pair of wide, flat wings that are transparent with blue wing covers. It has four legs; the front pair of legs has two claws, while the back pair has only one.

Vikavolt produces electricity with an organ in its abdomen and controls it with its huge jaws to fire powerful electric beams. When it clasps a Charjabug in its legs, it is able to utilize it as an extra battery. This allows it to continue firing powerful attacks. However, during fierce aerial fights, it will release Charjabug to make itself lighter and more mobile. It is an adept flier, capable of acrobatic maneuvers such as tailspins and sharp turns. Even as it weaves through complicated tangles of branches in the forest, it is able to maintain high-speed flight. It is known to have a rivalry with Pinsir and Heracross. As shown in the anime, it likes to drink Sap.
Trivia
* Vikavolt shares its category with Pinsir. They are both known as the Stag Beetle Pokémon.
* Vikavolt has the highest base Special Attack stat of all Bug Pokémon.
* Vikavolt, along with its pre-evolved forms, were designed by Hitoshi Ariga.
* This Pokémon's Japanese name is very similar to that of Kuwagamon (クワガーモン) from the Digimon franchise.

Origin
Vikavolt appears to be based on a stag beetle and a railgun. Its straight, scissor-like Mandible (insect mouthpart) resemble those of Lucanus hayashii and some Cyclommatus species of beetles.

Name origin
Vikavolt may come from vise grip and volt.

Kuwagannon may be a combination of 鍬形虫 kuwagatamushi (stag beetle) and cannon.
