Squirtle used to be the leader of a gang known as the [[Squirtle Squad]], a group of rogue Squirtle who were deserted by their {{pkmn|Trainer}}s. {{MTR}} of [[Team Rocket]] managed to befriend the Squirtle Squad by convincing them that [[Jessie]] and [[James]] were his pets. The Squirtle Squad then captured Ash, {{an|Misty}} and {{an|Brock}} so they could take {{AP|Pikachu}} back to Meowth. Ash managed to convince the Squirtle Squad to let him free to get a Super Potion for Pikachu, who was badly injured after an earlier encounter with a {{p|Goldeen}}. The Squirtle Squad agreed to let Ash go to town to buy a Super Potion, but if he didn't get back by noon the next day, they threatened to dye Misty's hair purple (In the original, they threatened to kill her).

When Ash got back with the Super Potion, Team Rocket began bombing the Squirtle Squad after they received Pikachu. Ash, Misty and Brock ran to hide in the Squirtle Squad's cave; however, when Ash noticed that the leader was stuck on his shell, he went back to save it. Squirtle then defeated Team Rocket with {{m|Water Gun}}. However, Team Rocket's bombs had started a forest fire, which the Squirtle Squad worked together to put out. After putting out the fire, [[Officer Jenny]] appointed the Squirtle Squad as the official fire fighters of the town. The leader of the Squirtle Squad preferred to join Ash on his journey rather than fight fires with the Squirtle Squad, as it wanted to repay Ash for saving his life after Team Rocket tried to bomb it.

During its time with Ash, Squirtle became one of Ash's three most trustworthy Pokémon, next to Bulbasaur and Pikachu, and it was used very often, about as much as Bulbasaur, Pikachu and [[Ash's Charizard|Charmander/Charizard]]. Squirtle is shown to be a born leader and prefers to wear sunglasses occasionally, wearing them when investigating {{an|Jigglypuff}}'s presence on the island in ''[[EP060|Beach Blank-Out Blastoise]]'' and when it competed against [[Team Wartortle]] to prove itself, its fire-fighting spirit hurt by its inability to put out the fire that Team Wartortle had extinguished. Personality-wise, Squirtle is mischievous and laid-back, which is a contrast to the more serious {{AP|Bulbasaur}}. During its time on the Squirtle Squad, it led the team to commit various pranks and so on. It served as Pikachu's 'steed' when the group [[EP033|competed in a race]], but the two were put out of the running by a {{m|Glare}} attack from {{TP|Jessie|Arbok}}. During the [[Indigo Plateau Conference]], Squirtle won Ash's second round by defeating a {{p|Nidorino}}. One of its most notable battles was when it was pitted against [[Rudy]]'s {{p|Starmie}}, which was able to use {{m|Thunderbolt}}; despite the power of the electric attack, Squirtle not only defeated Starmie, but learned {{m|Hydro Pump}} in the process.

During Ash's travels in Johto, it competed in an event called the [[EP147|Fire and Rescue Grand Prix]], a firefighting competition for water Pokémon. As luck would have it, one of the teams was the Squirtle Squad, but they were confused without their leader. Ash's Squirtle led the Squirtle Squad to win the Grand Prix, and at the end of the episode Squirtle returned to the Squirtle Squad because Ash felt that the old gang needed Squirtle more than he did.

It returned briefly to [[EP267|battle in the]] [[Silver Conference]], fighting alongside {{AP|Totodile}} and {{AP|Phanpy|Donphan}} against the {{type2|Fire}} trainer [[Macy]] and defeating her {{p|Electabuzz}} despite the type disadvantage.

In the Christmas special, it was seen snatching a biscuit from {{AP|Bulbasaur}} and being used a sled by Bulbasaur.

Squirtle can be called upon at any time. In ''[[AG189|Gathering the Gang of Four!]]'', it returned to help Ash with his final battle against {{FB|Pyramid King|Brandon}}, meeting {{TP|May|May's Squirtle|Wartortle}} and defeating Brandon's {{p|Ninjask}} in the process.

In the Japanese version of [[EP017]], the Pokémon Subtitles for Squirtle use the personal pronoun "ore" (おれ), a masculine pronoun, which some have taken as "confirming" its gender as male. Ore is not used exclusively by males, as many websites will protest, and often female characters in anime often use the pronoun to denote masculinity. :I'm guessing this is for the episode pages. I don't know how I feel about it. I mean, it's pretty and all. I just think it would be too much of a hassle when episodes need to be updated. Like when an episode airs. Sometimes I watch and write down the characters I see in the episode as it airs. It would be difficult if I had to deal with all of the coding while trying to remember what I just saw. And I'm sure that applies to other users. Not to mention it might be confusing for inexperienced users.

Hi. I would want to ask you about Ash's and Dawn's article: I think we have better to modify the part "In training" into "Can be called upon" for Ash, and for Dawn "Released" instead "in training" (about "Dawn's Ambipom"). "In training" is a statement too vague to express their real status, Because that either those of the laboratory of Professor Oak or those released are in training, all pokémons when they have the occasion to train, they do it, it's logic. For exemple, ash's Quilava: it learned a new move in the laboratory of Professor Oak meaning that it trains there. About Ambipom, she is right in training but this one is in training to improve her capabilities for a sport she enjoys. That doesn't interest us. What interests us is knowing what a character did of the pokémon, in this case, Dawn released her. Hi. I'm not agree about what you said. In ep005, when ash battle onix, Ash tried to recall him and the red light came out of the pokeball signifying, that Ash has already placed Pikahu in a Poké ball and certainly it was in ep001 beetween the part when Ash and Professor Oak are electrified and when we see them go out of the Laboratory. : The trivia in question refers to the Pokémon first being captured, put into the Poké Ball that way. Pikachu was Ash's starter Pokémon, given to him by Professor Oak, so he did not have to use a Poké Ball to capture it. In the first episode, Professor Oak gave Ash the Poké Ball that held Pikachu. Ash's Squirtle, on the other hand, had to have been put in a Poké Ball after the events of EP012, which is the definition of an "off-screen" capture, put into a Poké Ball. That should clarify the situation.

For training ? Why you're calling that a training, Ambipom is in training, this is for sure in training but she is in training to improve her skills in a sport. We can say this in Ambipom's article, but do not admit it's a training in the general sense of the word. Also, it brings confusion with Ash's Charizard and Squirtle who are in the same part in Ash's article (In training) and who can be called upon at any time (therefore they belong always to Ash. Like when an episode airs. Sometimes I watch and write down the characters I see in the episode as it airs. Not to mention it might be confusing for inexperienced users.

Hi.I would want to ask you about Ash's and Dawn's article: I think we have better to modify the part "In training" into "Can be called upon" for Ash, and for Dawn "Released" instead "in training" (about "Dawn's Ambipom"). "In training" is a statement too vague to express their real status, Because that either those of the laboratory of Professor Oak or those released are in training, all pokémons when they have the occasion to train, they do it, it's logic. For exemple, ash's Quilava: it learned a new move in the laboratory of Professor Oak meaning that it trains there. About Ambipom, she is right in training but this one is in training to improve her capabilities for a sport she enjoys. That doesn't interest us. What interests us is knowing what a character did of the pokémon, in this case, Dawn released her. Hi.I would want to ask you about Ash's and Dawn's article: I think we have better to modify the part "In training" into "Can be called upon" for Ash, and for Dawn "Released" instead "in training" (about "Dawn's Ambipom"). "In training" is a statement too vague to express their real status, Because that either those of the laboratory of Professor Oak or those released are in training, all pokémons when they have the occasion to train, they do it, it's logic. For training ? Why you're calling that a training, Ambipom is in training, this is for sure in training but she is in training to improve her skills in a sport. We can say this in Ambipom's article, but do not admit it's a training in the general sense of the word. Also, it brings confusion with Ash's Charizard and Squirtle who are in the same part in Ash's article (In training) and who can be called upon at any time (therefore they belong always to Ash. Pikachu battled again in the [[Pastoria Gym]] battle, where he battled [[Crasher Wake]]'s {{p|Gyarados}} and defeated it with a Volt Tackle to the face. He also battled [[Crasher Wake's Floatzel]] for a moment, allowing {{AP|Buizel}} time to recover. In ''[[DP102|Shield with a Twist!]]'', Pikachu lost to [[Fantina's Drifblim]] after a fierce battle.

Pikachu's next major battle after Fantina, was when he was used against [[Paul]] in ''[[DP132|Evolving Strategies!]]''. First he went up against {{TP|Paul|Magmortar}}; however, when he attacked with {{m|Quick Attack}}, he was {{status|burn}}ed by Magmortar's {{a|Flame Body}} and Pikachu was recalled. Later, he went up against Paul's very powerful {{TP|Paul|Ursaring}} and {{status|Paralysis|paralyzed}} it with {{a|Static}}. This actually made things worse for Pikachu as being paralyzed activated Ursaring's {{a|Guts}} ability, and Pikachu found himself completely outmatched by Ursaring's massive power and was defeated and thrown into [[Lake Acuity]], taking him out of the match as well as injuring him. This defeat meant that Ash had to defeat Paul's remaining five Pokémon with only {{AP|Chimchar}}.

Later, in ''[[DP165|Flint Sparks the Fire!]]'', Pikachu battled {{EF|Flint}}'s {{p|Infernape}}, but it was defeated after a long fight.

In ''[[DP179|The Eighth Wonder of the Sinnoh World!]]'', Pikachu battled against [[Volkner]]'s Electivire and won, giving him his first victory over a Pokémon in the Electabuzz evolutionary line. However, he was defeated by Volkner's {{p|Luxray}}.

In the [[Lily of the Valley Conference]], Ash used Pikachu in his battle against Paul in ''[[DP186|Familiarity Breeds Strategy!]]''. It was used against Paul's {{p|Aggron}}, where it put up a good fight and weakened Aggron before it was recalled in place of Infernape. Pikachu was also used in the continuation of Ash's battle against Paul in ''[[DP187|A Real Rival Rouser!]]''. It went against Paul's {{p|Froslass}} where he was seen having some trouble at first, but by the end, he was able to pull through and defeat Froslass with a powerful Volt Tackle attack. This gave Pikachu his first win against one of Paul's Pokémon and also gave Ash the lead in the battle. In ''[[DP188|Battling a Thaw in Relations!]]'', he battled Paul's Electivire, but had trouble due to Electivire's {{a|Motor Drive}} ability, and was soon defeated by a {{m|Brick Break}}. In ''[[DP189|The Semi-Final Frontier!]]'', Pikachu was the last Pokémon chosen by Ash to battle [[Tobias]] in the semi-finals. Despite Ash losing five of his Pokémon, Pikachu tried its best to defeat Tobias's {{p|Latios}}. Almost none of the attacks hit or did any damage to Latios in the beginning, however, Pikachu finally managed to jump on top of Latios and used Thunderbolt several times before he was shaken off. As Pikachu is about to land, Latios used Luster Purge. Pikachu used Volt Tackle and Iron Tail, taking against the force of the Luster Purge. However, it was tied with Latios as both fainted. As Ash's last Pokémon also fainted, Tobias was crowned the winner of their battle.

In [[BW001]], Pikachu had an encounter with {{p|Zekrom}}, which unaware by Ash, caused Pikachu to lose its ability to use Electric-type moves. Ash finally noticed this when it battled [[Shooti]]'s {{TP|Shooti|Snivy|Janovy}}, losing in the process. In [[BW002]], it regained its ability to use Electric-type attacks and was used in battle which lead to the capture of {{AP|Pidove}}. In [[BW005]], Ash used Pikachu in his gym battle at the [[Sanyou Gym]], where he faced [[Corn]] and his {{p|Panpour}}. Even though he tried his best, Pikachu was just not as fast as Panpour and was defeated without landing a single hit. In [[BW010]], he battled Shooti's {{p|Hatooboo}}, who had already taken out [[Ash's Oshawott]] and {{AP|Tepig}}. It took a beating from multiple Aerial Aces, but showed Shooti the power of its electrical attacks by defeating Hatooboo with Volt Tackle. It then battled Snivy again, who by then had evolved into Janovy. However, despite not being incapacitated, he was once again defeated. In [[BW013]], Ash used Pikachu in a battle against {{ga|Bianca}} and her {{p|Chaoboo}}. Even though he had some trouble at first, Pikachu was able to pull through in the end and defeat Chaoboo with a powerful Volt Tackle.

Like in the anime, Pikachu was originally unwilling to obey Ash, but after Ash protects Pikachu from a herd of wild {{p|Spearow}} and {{AP|Fearow}}, Pikachu gains respect for Ash, and after Ash defeats Brock, he is named Jean Luc Pikachu.

Later on, when Ash is in a gym battle with Misty, Pikachu is petrified by the sight of her Gyarados and does not battle, while in his gym battle with Sabrina, it is easily bested by her Abra.

The Squirtle Squad then captured Ash, {{an|Misty}} and {{an|Brock}} so they could take {{AP|Pikachu}} back to Meowth. Ash managed to convince the Squirtle Squad to let him free to get a Super Potion for Pikachu, who was badly injured after an earlier encounter with a {{p|Goldeen}}. The Squirtle Squad agreed to let Ash go to town to buy a Super Potion, but if he didn't get back by noon the next day, they threatened to dye Misty's hair purple (In the original, they threatened to kill her).

When Ash got back with the Super Potion, Team Rocket began bombing the Squirtle Squad after they received Pikachu. Ash, Misty and Brock ran to hide in the Squirtle Squad's cave; however, when Ash noticed that the leader was stuck on his shell, he went back to save it. Squirtle then defeated Team Rocket with {{m|Water Gun}}. However, Team Rocket's bombs had started a forest fire, which the Squirtle Squad worked together to put out. After putting out the fire, [[Officer Jenny]] appointed the Squirtle Squad as the official fire fighters of the town. ==History==
Dawn began her journey with her Piplup after bonding with it. Unlike {{an|May}}, she knew from the beginning that she wanted to be a {{pkmn|Coordinator}}. After meeting Ash and Brock, she decided to journey with them, as their experience would likely be helpful to her. Like Ash, she is lucky enough to have seen a [[legendary Pokémon]] at the start of her journey, the projected soul of {{p|Mesprit}} in ''[[DP001|Following A Maiden's Voyage!]]''.

She had a [[bicycle]], but like {{an|Misty}}'s and {{an|May}}'s bikes, [[Ash's Pikachu]] destroyed it with its {{m|Thunderbolt}}. However, she did not mention this to Ash until more than 30 episodes after it happened. She also had planned to take a large suitcase full of dresses with her, but her mother made her leave it at home due to its impracticality. She had a [[Contest Pass]] for the [[Sinnoh]] region, and her Contest cry is "Spotlight!" (English) or "Charm up!" (Japanese). Johanna gave Dawn the first [[ribbon]] she earned as a Coordinator for good luck.

Dawn lost her first {{pkmn|Contest}} in ''[[DP012|Arrival of a Rival!]]'' to her new [[rival]], Zoey who became one of her close friends after the contest and who later helps Dawn through many a tough time. After her loss, her mother told her not to rely on her but on her friends. Eventually, in her [[DP027|second official Contest]], Dawn narrowly beat her childhood rival {{si|Kenny}} to gain her first [[ribbon]].

She later trains with Zoey in coming up with different contest moves regularly as evidenced by ''[[DP041|A Stand-Up Sit-Down!]]''. However she was not able to perfect {{AP|Buizel}}'s [[Ash's Buizel#Moves improvised|Ice Aqua Jet]] despite coming up with the idea. Ash later accomplishes this in the [[Wallace Cup]].

Despite her confidence and contest training, in ''[[DP049|Dawn's Early Night!]]'', when she competed in the [[Hearthome City]] Contest, she lost in the Appeal Round, making her the first of the main characters to lose a Contest by losing in the appeal round. In ''[[DP061|Team Shocker!]]'', she lost the Appeal Round for the second time in a row. This marked a notable change in Dawn's character. After the second blow to her self-esteem, she didn't know what to do and was still very upset throughout ''[[DP062|Tanks for the Memories!]]''. After this, she became more focused and regained her confidence after {{pkmn|battle|battling}} [[Maylene]] in ''[[DP067|Crossing the Battle Line!]]''. Dawn began to practice in earnest and eventually was able to break her losing streak in ''[[DP079|Strategy With a Smile!]]'' and was able to win the [[Wallace Cup]] after narrowly defeating {{an|May}} in the final round. Dawn has since maintained her new found focus and humility.

After learning of the next Contest in [[Celestic Town]], she became very dedicated in her training, and actually overworked her Pokémon in ''[[DP092|A Lean Mean Team Rocket Machine!]]''. Due to her hard work, she managed to win the Contest in ''[[DP095|Battling The Generation Gap!]]''. One of Dawn's combinations in that contest gave {{Ash}} the inspiration for one of his notable tactic which he uses later on, the [[Counter Shield]]. In ''[[DP106|A Breed Stampede!]]'', her {{TP|Dawn|Mamoswine}} began to disobey her after [[Evolution|evolving]]. Despite this, she was still eager to train it well.

This was evidenced by how much she cared for Mamoswine in ''[[DP119|Trials and Adulations!]]'' when both of them got lost and Mamsowine was injured. Using the medical knowledge she got from {{an|Brock}} in ''[[DP094|Doc Brock!]]'', she was able to heal Mamoswine making it obey her. However it still rebels and disobeys Dawn in the finals of the {{town|Lilypad}} {{pkmn|contest}} in ''[[DP146|Dressed for Jess Success! ]]'' due to its short temper making her lose the contest. However she remains calm and remains optimistic.

Her encounter with {{an|Mesprit}} and Ash and Brock's encounters with {{an|Azelf}} and {{an|Uxie}} respectively was revealed to be fate as [[Team Galactic]] capture the [[lake guardians]] to for the awakening of {{p|Dialga}} and {{p|Palkia}} in the [[Spear Pillar]]. The lake guardians communicate telepathically with Ash, Dawn and Brock and teleport them to the [[Team Galactic HQ]]. Eventually with the help of [[Cynthia]], they foil Team Galactic's plans and free the lake guardians.

With the help of [[Candice]] and [[Zoey]], after many failed attempts, she comes up with a new tactic, the Flame Ice. She uses this tactic later on in the [[Daybreak Town]] {{pkmn|contest}}.

While she is the only female main character not to have a sibling, she has two childhood friends that appeared in the {{pkmn|anime}}, {{si|Kenny}} and [[Leona]], both of whom call her '''Dee Dee''' (Japanese: '''ピカリ''' ''Pikari'').
Dawn has prevented them from telling Ash and Brock about the reason why she has this nickname, but in ''[[DP161|Yes in Dee Dee, It's Dawn!]]'', it was revealed that the reason for the name was due to her hair glittering (ピカピカ ''pikapika'') after being shocked by the class pets in her kindergarten, {{p|Plusle}} and {{p|Minun}}, making it appear that she had '''D'''iamond '''D'''andruff. Due to the trauma from being teased by her entire class with the nickname, she has a certain fear of Plusle and Minun.

[[Ursula]] uses this against Dawn in the by using Plusle and Minun and deliberately attempting to shock her hair. Even though Dawn temporarily succumbed to her trauma, with Mamoswine's and Cyndaquil's encouragement, she was able to get over her trauma and defeat Ursula and winning her final fifth ribbon in the process as well allowing her to participate in the [[Sinnoh Grand Festival]].

She later trains in ''[[DP167|Teaching the Student Teacher!]]'' where she comes up with a new tactic, the Ice Chandelier for the [[Sinnoh Grand Festival]]. This time, however, she is able to perfect the move by herself with some inspiration. After obtaining {{TP|Dawn|Togekiss}}, she trains with it to find a way around Togekiss's need to move gracefully and is able to do so successfully.

Dawn entered the [[Sinnoh Grand Festival]] in ''[[DP174|Last Call, First Round!]]'', using her Buneary and Cyndaquil in the Appeals Round. She progressed through the round and battled [[Ursula]] first in [[DP175|the next episode]]. With Mamoswine and Pachirisu and her new combination, the Ice Chandelier, she was able to defeat Ursula's {{p|Gabite}} and {{p|Flareon}}. [[DP176|The following episode]], she defeated [[Jessie|Jessilina]] and progressed to the [[DP177|finals]] to fight [[Zoey]].

After a very close fight between her Piplup and Togekiss and [[Zoey's Glameow]] and {{p|Gallade}}, however, she lost. After the finals, she returns her mother's ribbon saying that she no longer is in her mother's shadow and only needs her Pokémon's care and support thus proving her growth as a Trainer.

After the competition, Zoey told Dawn that [[Candice]] was throwing a victory party for her in [[Snowpoint City]] and that Dawn was also welcome; however, Dawn declined the invitation, stating that she still wants to support Ash in his upcoming battle at [[Sunyshore Gym]] and in the [[Lily of the Valley Conference]]. She then thanked all the Pokémon that had traveled with her through Sinnoh for their hard work and pledged to not give up her dream of being a Top Coordinator.

After staying for Ash's gym battle and the Sinnoh league, she later contemplates whether or not to go with Ash and Brock back to [[Kanto]]. However after receiving an invitation by [[Paris]] for her {{TP|Dawn|Buneary}}, she decides to stay in [[Sinnoh]]. She and Ash later shares a final high-five as they did throughout the [[Diamond & Pearl series]] before Ash and Brock leaves for Kanto. She will appear in a Diamond and Pearl special on the 3rd of February.

==Character==
Dawn is notable for her confidence, since she is always looking towards the future rather than dwelling on her mistakes, although she has learned that this is not always enough. In the Japanese version, her catchphrase is, "{{tt|Daijōbu!|'It's fine!' or 'It'll be alright!'}}" Although not consistently translated in the English dub at first, she began to regularly use "No need to worry!" In stark contrast to {{an|May}}'s inexperience and self-doubt at the start of the {{series|Advanced Generation}}, Dawn was overly confident and assured in her own strength in the beginning.

Over the course of her journey in Sinnoh, Dawn was able to come up with various combinations to show up her Pokémon's looks and strength. This began with something as simple as making her Piplup's beak grow longer, when using {{m|Peck}}, a combination she used even until the end of the Grand Festival. She later followed with simple spinning, a technique her Piplup and Buneary practiced for a while in [[Oreburgh City]]. The way it was used was adapted by Ash in his first Gym battle in Sinnoh.

Later on, Dawn began with more complex combinations, such as Flame Ice and Ice Chandelier, moves that were both powerful and beautiful. After a lot of practice, Dawn's Pokémon were able to master these combinations in battle. Coincidentally, both of these were used to defeat [[Ursula]].

Dawn is much more different than any of Ash's {{ashfr|other friends}}. Dawn has more concern about her appearance, as she will not show herself to Ash or Brock until she feels that her appearance is perfect. That may be a reason why she decides to sleep inside a tent while the others sleep outside. However, she has recently been seen sleeping outside with the others, such as in ''[[DP053|Tears for Fears!]]''. Every time she's going to be on camera, she needs to take a moment to brush her hair before going on, such as in ''[[DP174|Last Call, First Round!]]''.

In ''[[DP070|The Bells Are Singing!]]'', Dawn revealed that she was the one to design {{TP|Dawn|Buneary}}'s vest (but also admitted that her mother was the one to sew it). In ''[[DP086|Arriving in Style!]]'', she demonstrated her talent for designing again, sketching many different dresses for the [[Hearthome Collection]], though she rejected all of them.

Since catching her first Pokémon, the [[Pokémon]] that Dawn acquire tend to be cute and small like her starter, {{TP|Dawn|Piplup}}.

Because of her lack of experience, she may have some rough spots on how to deal with her Pokémon properly, as seen when she bickers with Piplup sometimes. This lack of experience also reflects with her Pachirisu and Mamoswine. Pachirisu occasionally hits unwanted targets with its {{m|Discharge}} while Mamoswine may easily be angered and disobey Dawn in the process. Despite all these issues she faces some times, Dawn still deeply cares for all her Pokémon, especially her starter, Piplup.

As a Coordinator who is willing to win the Grand Festival, Dawn has trained her Pokémon in the art of Appeals, as well as battles. She is able to fully utilize her Pokémon capabilities. A commonly-seen example would be her Buneary's capability to use {{m|Ice Beam}}, which was used in various ways in the Contests Dawn participated in. She was also able to use her Togekiss in the finals of the Grand Festival to help her almost defeat Zoey, despite the lack of experience with it when compared to her other Pokémon, most especially Piplup, who was also used in the finals.

Ash's main goal in life, as described in [[EP001|the first episode]], is to be the world's greatest [[Pokémon master|Pokémon Master]]. Ash began his journey at the age of 10 as a warm-hearted and well-intentioned but stubborn, rash and amateurish [[Pokémon Trainer]]. He was forced to accept the cheeky {{AP|Pikachu}} from [[Professor Oak]] as his [[starter Pokémon]] because he carelessly broke his alarm clock and woke up late on the day he was set to get his first Pokémon. He was determined to achieve his goal, however, and when Pikachu saw that he was willing to compromise his own safety to keep it safe he formed a strong bond of friendship with Pikachu. This would set his course for the future.

However, from that point, Ash still had a lot to learn about becoming a Trainer. His [[Ash's Butterfree|first Pokémon]] was {{pkmn2|caught}} by luck, he knew absolutely nothing about [[Pokémon battle|battling]], and was hesitant to admit it whenever he was wrong. Many of his first [[Gym]] [[badge]]s were given to him merely out of gratitude for his assistance rather than claiming an actual victory in battle over the [[Gym Leader]]s; of his first five gym battles, only his victory over [[Lt. Surge]] was an actual victory. Every time he thought he was doing well, he would somehow cross paths with his childhood [[rival]], [[Gary Oak]]. He always reminded Ash that he was always a step or seven behind, with Gary catching around forty-five Pokémon by the time Ash had only caught his {{AP|seventh|Kingler}}. For example, when he received a banner filled with prints from his Pokémon in ''[[AG187|The Unbeatable Lightness of Seeing!]]'', he knew which Pokémon placed specific prints, showing his close bond with them. He also learns where their hidden abilities lie, as well as resorting to unorthodox strategies when fighting particularly challenging opponents. For example, he uses his Pikachu's speed to outmaneuver larger foes and attack. In another instance, his {{AP|Charizard}} defeated [[Gary's Blastoise]] by causing the field to overheat before mounting a close-quarters attack while Blastoise was blinded by the steam. He also prefers to train a Pokémon to be the best it can without forcing it to [[Evolution|evolve]], as evidenced by his treatment of {{AP|Gligar|Gliscor}} in ''[[DP085|Fighting Fear With Fear!]]''. He is happy when his Pokémon evolve but lets them choose whether or not they want to evolve instead of forcing them.

Early on, Ash originally trained not to further himself but instead to catch more Pokémon than Gary. He later slowed his pace which allowed him to focus on the individual traits of each Pokémon. At the [[Johto]] League [[Silver Conference]], with great humility and maturity, Ash finally won a battle against his old rival, signifying a great milestone in his history. His maturity has also increased in his dealings with Pokémon. This is shown when [[Ash's Primeape|a Mankey]] stole his {{AP|hat}} in ''[[EP025|Primeape Goes Bananas]]'', he screamed and yelled at it, even climbing trees just to get his hat back, but when [[Dawn's Ambipom|an Aipom]] did the same in ''[[AG179|Slaking Kong]]'', he stated merely that he would feel strange without a hat. When Aipom stole his hat again in ''[[DP009|Setting the World on its Buneary]]'', however, while it was under his ownership, he chased after it in the same manner as before.

In most episodes of the anime, especially those during the Johto League saga, Ash befriends someone who will influence him and cause him to strive to become a better Trainer. Although he is not a dependent individual, he is still young and has learned to make his way relying on his {{AP|friends}}, particularly the maternal skills of Brock. The honor of "best friend" is usually reserved for Pikachu but Ash has come to see his closest human friends in the same light over time; using the term for {{an|Misty}} and {{an|Brock}} in ''[[EP273|Gotta Catch Ya Later]]'' as well as {{an|May}} and [[Max]] in ''[[AG178|Battling the Enemy Within]]''.

He has traversed much of the [[Pokémon world]] and has thus far participated in four [[Pokémon League#Championship competitions|Pokémon League regional competitions]], but he is still learning new things about Pokémon all the time.

Ash has gained a close connection with many [[legendary Pokémon]], including {{an|Mewtwo}}, {{an|Ho-Oh}}, {{OBP|Lugia|movie 2}}, {{OBP|Latias|movie 5}}, [[Lake guardians (anime)#Azelf|Azelf]], {{OBP|Shaymin|movie 11}}, {{an|Giratina}} and {{an|Arceus}}. In the English dub of the [[M02|second movie]], he was revealed to be "The Chosen One" - the one who would bring balance back to the world when it was disrupted. Although viewed as a normal human, Ash does have some special abilities, as he is said to have the same [[aura]] as [[Sir Aaron]], a legendary hero, and is theoretically able to manipulate it in much the same way. However, he has not received any training in this field, opting to continue his Pokémon journey instead. He has also been likened to an ancient [[aura]] guardian in ''[[DP056|The Keystone Pops!]]'', who also had a partner {{p|Pikachu}}. Later, in ''[[DP071|Pokémon Ranger and the Kidnapped Riolu! Ash has also participated in contests. He has a [[Contest Pass]] for the [[Sinnoh]] region, though he has stated that the contest he got it for was the only one he intends on entering. He also has one for the Hoenn region as it was required to watch one of the contests held there. Ash carries half of a broken [[Poké Ball]] with him everywhere, while Gary has the other half, as a symbol of their ongoing, but now friendly, rivalry; [[Misty's special lure]], which she sent to him as a gift; and half of a ribbon he received in a contest against May before she left the group to compete in Johto. Ash also participated in the [[Wallace Cup]] on the suggestion of [[Wallace]] but he lost in the third round.

Ash soon obtained all of the Sinnoh gym badges. During his battles in the [[Lily of the Valley Conference]], he managed to advance to the Top 4, during which time he defeated his long-time Sinnoh rival [[Paul]], and fought against [[Tobias]], becoming the only Trainer to defeat his {{p|Darkrai}}. Though he lost later on in the battle, he seems to be okay with losing, as he has become closer to his Pokémon than ever before.

Ash is now currently in his venture to [[Unova]], bringing along only his Pikachu as he did in Hoenn and planned to in [[Sinnoh]].

Ash lived with his mother, [[Delia Ketchum]], until he left for his Pokémon journey at the age of ten.

His father was never introduced. The anime suggests that his father was once a Pokémon Trainer who began his journey in Pallet Town, and that he is still living. An interview with the series' storyboarder confirmed Ash's father is a Trainer on his own journey. According to the same storyboarder, Ash's father may or may not be introduced in the series, depending on its necessity to Ash's further maturity and development as a Trainer.

Ash is an only child, breaking from the tradition of several other main characters, with the exception of {{an|Dawn}} and possibly {{Tracey}} and {{an|Iris}}, whose siblings are often a foil or focal point in their lives.

Ash Ketchum is a starring character in [[Electric Tale of Pikachu|The Electric Tale of Pikachu]], a manga series based on the anime. Ash's journey in The Electric Tale of Pikachu follows roughly the same plot as in the anime: first traveling the [[Kanto]] region to participate in the [[Pokémon League]], before embarking on a journey around the [[Orange Archipelago]].

While there are many similarities between the anime and manga versions of Ash, there are several differences as well. For example, while the anime version of Ash appears to be indifferent to love and romance, the manga version of Ash has a huge crush on Gary's sister, [[Daisy Oak|May Oak]]. He is also prone to quickly falling in love just like Brock, but to a much more subtle or less extreme degree.

Ash's appearance differs in the manga as well. He wears a red jacket, much like {{ga|Red}}'s, instead of the blue he wears in the anime. Also, for the duration of the [[Electric Tale of Pikachu volume 1|first volume]], he wears a different hat, which is solid red with a "PM" on the front. Beginning in ''[[ET05|The Human Race and the Pokémon Race]]'', his hat is changed to match the one he wears in the anime.

Ash owns many of the same Pokémon as in the anime, with a few exceptions: he captures a {{AP|Fearow}} and an {{p|Oddish}}. He also captures a {{p|Mankey}}, which he trades to a shady salesman for a map of [[Mt. Moon]], and a giant {{p|Slowpoke}}, which he trades to [[Gary Oak]].
