==Plot==
Having finally reached the [[Lumiose Conference]] finals, {{Ash}} is now facing [[Alain]], who has proven to be an extremely powerful {{pkmn|Trainer}} to battle against. With the remaining Pokémon being three-to-two in Ash's favor, {{AP|Pikachu}} is now facing Alain's ace: {{TP|Alain|Charizard}}. Pikachu attacks Charizard with a {{m|Thunderbolt}}, but the {{pkmn|category|Flame Pokémon}} shrugs off the {{DL|Damage|super effective}} hit as if it was nothing. Ash commands a {{m|Quick Attack}}, but Pikachu's previous battle against Alain's {{p|Metagross}} is starting to show its effect, causing the Electric Mouse to fall on its knee. A {{m|Flamethrower}} from Charizard lands a clean hit on Pikachu, who barely has any strength left to continue. Charizard takes flight and launches another Flamethrower, but Ash, using a tactic learned from [[Clemont's Bunnelby]], has Pikachu use {{m|Iron Tail}} on the ground, creating a cloud of dirt to block the incoming {{type|Fire}} attack. Alain compliments Ash's strategy before ordering a {{m|Dragon Claw}}, which Pikachu counters with an Iron Tail. The two moves clash, but the impact is too much for the weakened Pikachu, who finally [[Fainting|faints]], leaving both sides with two Pokémon remaining.

Back at the stands, [[Malva]] is commentating on the events taking place at the stadium, but her cameramen, {{TRT}}, are hardly paying any attention on her, instead complaining about Pikachu losing. [[James]], whom [[Jessie]] and {{MTR}} had glared at for rooting for their [[Twerp|enemy]] [[XY130|earlier]], is glad to see his fellow team members cheering for Ash too, as none of them is wanting to see their longtime enemy lose to a guy like Alain. In the crowd, [[Ash's friends]] are discussing about the battle situation. [[Sawyer]] points out that both of Alain's remaining Pokémon have already battled, while Ash's remaining two Pokémon are still at full health, giving him an advantage. {{an|Serena}} agrees to this, seeing the confident smile on Ash's face. At the VIP box, [[Mairin]] is encouraging Alain to do his best.

Ash sends out {{AP|Goodra}} as his fifth Pokémon, while Alain chooses to [[recall]] Charizard and send out his {{p|Bisharp}} again. In order to create an environment suitable for Goodra, Ash has the Dragon Pokémon use {{m|Rain Dance}}, creating a [[rain]]storm on the battlefield. Goodra begins the offensive with {{m|Ice Beam}}, which Bisharp dodges while charging in for an {{m|Iron Head}}. Goodra blocks the attack by grabbing Bisharp with its horns and then throwing it into the air. Goodra's assault continues with a {{m|Dragon Pulse}}, which is blocked by a {{m|Focus Blast}} from Bisharp. As Bisharp charges in for another Iron Head, Ash has Goodra use {{m|Bide}}, forcing it to take the attack. As Bide is charging, Alain continues his own offensive by having Bisharp attack with another Focus Blast and Iron Head, severely damaging Goodra. Ash launches a counterattack in the form of a full-charged Bide, which hits Bisharp dead on, causing it to fall on its knee. Back at {{rt|14|Kalos|the wetlands}}, [[Keanan]] and the wetland Pokémon are following the battle on [[Television|TV]], while [[Meyer]] and [[Clembot]] listen to the broadcast from a radio while doing a repair job on a roof in [[Lumiose City]].

Back at the stadium, Bisharp hits Goodra straight into the face with an Iron Head, causing the severely weakened Dragon Pokémon to fall on its knees. Alain orders Bisharp to go for the finish with a {{m|Guillotine}}, which Goodra desperately attempts to counter with a Dragon Pulse, but the Sword Blade Pokémon slices through the counterattack and delivers a devastating Guillotine, causing Goodra's endurance to finally run out and the resilient {{type|Dragon}} to faint, leaving Ash with just one Pokémon remaining: {{AP|Greninja}}. As Ash's {{type|Water}} is sent out, Malva comments how losing Greninja would result in Ash's defeat. Behind her, Team Rocket grumpily comments on how she's acting as if Greninja's defeat is only a matter of time, as they of all people know how tough Ash can be.

Alain commands an Iron Head from Bisharp, which Greninja counters with a {{m|Double Team}}. As Bisharp is trying to find the real one among the clones, Ash calls a {{m|Water Shuriken}} from Greninja, which makes a direct hit on Bisharp, finally taking it out of the fight. Sawyer realizes that Ash used the rain created by Goodra's Rain Dance to his advantage, as it powers up Greninja's Water-type moves. For his final Pokémon, Alain calls out his Charizard once again. Both Ash and Alain are determined to do their best with their final battlers. Both Pokémon charge in at each other, and Charizard fires a Flamethrower, but Greninja dodges it and strikes Charizard straight in the chest with {{m|Cut}}, causing the Flame Pokémon to be pushed back just as the rainclouds above the battlefield start clearing up. Even though the rain has ended, {{an|Clemont}} assures everyone that Greninja still has the advantage in type. Serena also has full confidence in Ash.

Looking at Alain, Ash swears he's not going to lose to him, and that he'll fight him with all of his power, activating the [[Bond Phenomenon]] and transforming Greninja into Ash-Greninja. Alain, getting excited of seeing Ash bringing out his full power, responds by [[Mega Evolution|Mega Evolving]] his Charizard into Mega Charizard X. With both sides at their best, the entire stadium is ready to witness the final round of the Lumiose Conference to unfold before their eyes.

Ash-Greninja charges at Mega Charizard X and uses Double Team, but Alain has his partner to use Flamethrower to get rid of the clones. As all the Double Team clones are wiped out, Greninja emerges from the smoke left behind by the attack and hurls a Water Shuriken at Charizard, which is countered by a Dragon Claw. Ash orders Greninja to use {{m|Aerial Ace}}, and Alain responds with a command for another Dragon Claw. The attacks clash a couple of times, until Charizard finds an opening and manages to land a direct hit on Greninja, causing Ash to cringe in pain as well due to the synchronization between him and Ash-Greninja. Charizard fires yet another Flamethrower across the battlefield, but Greninja counters just in time by using Cut to slice through the blue-hot flames. Alain has Charizard use its most powerful attack, {{m|Blast Burn}}, but Greninja quickly counters the attack by slamming its Water Shuriken into the ground, causing a wave of water to burst out of the ground and block the incoming Fire-type move. Using the resulting steam cloud as a cover, Greninja dashes close to Charizard and strikes it on the head with an Aerial Ace, causing it to get slammed down to the ground.

As Charizard struggles to get back up, Alain congratulates Ash on giving him an thoroughly enjoyable battle. But, as Mairin's image flashes in his mind, he then loudly declares that he's going to be the strongest, and will not lose to anyone anymore. A Dragon Claw from Charizard follows, slamming Greninja across the battlefield and causing Ash to cringe again. As Greninja gets back to its feet, Ash admits that he's also enjoying battling a strong opponent like Alain, but also vowing the battle is going to end now. After promising that no matter who wins, there'll be no hard feelings, Ash commands a Cut from Greninja, getting a response from Alain in the form of a Dragon Claw. Both powered-up Pokémon clash furiously in the middle of the field for a few times, after which simultaneous attack commands are given by both Trainers: a Water Shuriken from Greninja, and a {{m|Thunder Punch}} from Charizard. Again, fierce attacks clash in the middle of the field for a few moments, until the Water Shuriken finally overpowers the Thunder Punch, and Greninja slams the shuriken straight into Charizard's chest, causing the Fire-type to be pushed back. Preparing for his ultimate move, Ash has Greninja use Water Shuriken, but this time, Ash-Greninja's watery aura wraps itself around the Water Shuriken, causing its size to increase dramatically and turning its color from blue to orange. Alain, momentarily taken aback by the sight, orders Charizard to use Blast Burn. Both moves are fired at the same time, and both Greninja and Charizard can only watch as their opponent's ultimate attack strikes them, creating a massive explosion on both sides of the field.

The entire crowd is looking at the field in anticipation, no one making a sound. As the smoke and steam clouds clear out, both Pokémon are still standing. For a few moments, both Greninja and Charizard look at each other, barely moving. Charizard stumbles, but just a second later, Greninja falls over, reverting back to its regular form. Ash-Greninja has been defeated, the battle is over, and Alain has won the Lumiose Conference.

Exhausted from the battle, Ash can't help but admire Alain's strength. At the stands, Ash's friends are downcast by his defeat, just when he had come so close to winning. Despite this, Sawyer and Clemont comment that Ash battled well, and Serena, seeing a smile on Ash's face, understands that Ash was nevertheless satisfied with the battle. Down at the battlefield, both Ash and Alain congratulate each other on a battle well fought, shaking hands as a sign of respect. Team Rocket, overwhelmed by the storm of emotions they're going through, decide to abandon their Pokémon capture plan, crying and bawling as Malva watches them. Mairin is glad that Alain won, and up at their personal stand, both [[Diantha]] and [[Professor Sycamore]] are clapping along with the crowd. Professor Sycamore wonders if this victory gave Alain the answer he was looking for.

Back inside, Ash apologizes his friends for not answering their expectations, but they still congartulate him on how well he and his Pokémon fought, Clemont even reminding him how stubborn opponent Alain's Charizard can be. Ash vows to keep on battling more Trainers to become even stronger. Alone in his own room, Alain thinks about how his battle with Ash made him grow even stronger, and how he's going to keep collecting Mega Evolution energy, being so close to the amount needed to save Mairin's [[Chespie]].

Inside the [[Team Flare]]-occupied [[Lumiose Gym]], [[Xerosic]] declares that the preparations are complete, having the {{tc|Team Flare Admin}}s to start the operation. Aiming their {{DL|List of Pokémon with form differences|Zygarde|Zygarde Cell}}-powered weapon at {{DL|Recurring wild Pokémon in the anime|Z2}}, a bright red beam is launched at the imprisoned Zygarde Core. At the same time, back at the [[Kalos League]] stadium, Diantha hands Alain the championship trophy, congratulating him on his training skills as the crowd, including Ash's friends, applaud for him. Ash, standing next to Alain, congratulates him as well. In the VIP box, Mairin is applauding to Alain too, being glad on his victory. As she turns around to talk to [[Lysandre]], she's surprised to see that he's gone.

Back at the Gym, Z2 is falling under the influence of Team Flare's weapon, which is also sensed by [[Squishy]]. Xerosic presents the results of his research to Lysandre, who, entering the room, commands the [[Legendary Pokémon]] to unleash its power for him. Having fallen under Team Flare's control, Z2 declares to wipe the world clean of foolish people, bursting out of its container and the through the side of the Gym, floating to the top of the Prism Tower. Lysandre and Xerosic enter the summit of the tower as well, witnessing how Z2 begins summoning its Cells all across the city around it. A pulse of energy runs through the Prism Tower, and suddenly, enormous vines starting bursting out of its sides and the street below it, causing the crowd to run and scream in panic. From their rooftop, Meyer and Clembot stare eyes wide open at the ensuing chaos. From the summit of the Prism Tower, the Team Flare Boss declares that the world will now be reborn into a new, beautiful world. Moments later, the massive vines also reach the League stadium, taking everyone by surprise and causing instant panic. Squishy, sensing that its fellow Core is in trouble, hops out of {{an|Bonnie}}'s bag and flees, with Bonnie, Clemont, and Serena in pursuit. As the vines continue to spread around Lumiose City, a bright red Zygarde lets out a vicious roar from the top of the vine-covered Prism Tower.

On the way to Snowbelle City, Ash and friends reunite with Ash’s rival Sawyer, who has won his eighth Gym badge. Eager to show much he’s learned on his own, Sawyer challenges Ash to a surprisingly tough battle! Meanwhile, Team Flare continues its experiments as Squishy tries to contact Z2…

==Plot==

The episode begins with {{Ash}} and {{AP|Greninja}} battling a trainer with a {{p|Scizor}}. After avoiding Scizor's attack with {{m|Double Team}}, Greninja uses {{m|Aerial Ace}} after the Greninja copies are mowed down by Scizor's {{m|Bullet Punch}}, resulting in Scizor being defeated and earning Ash the victory. Ash's opponent is impressed with Greninja's speed and power, to which Ash is thankful and bows. {{ashfr|Ash's friends}} approach him as {{an|Serena}} comments on how she knows he will win his gym badge, and Ash mentions how it will be his eighth gym badge if he wins. At that moment, a familiar voice calls out to the group as they all turn and notice that it's [[Sawyer]].

As [[Squishy]] relaxes in the sunlight, Ash and his friends are impressed to learn that Sawyer has managed to obtain all eight of his [[Kalos]] gym badges, and Ash reveals that he only has seven at the moment and that Sawyer has beaten him to it. Serena asks Sawyer about what type of gym the [[Snowbelle Gym]] is, to which he replies that it is an [[Ice-type]] gym. {{an|Clemont}} mentions how [[Water-type]] Pokémon should do well against it, which sets Ash's mind on using Greninja in the gym battle. Serena comments on how Ash and Greninja will do well in the gym battle due to them doing so well in [[XY118|the battle]] against Diantha, which shocks Saweyer as he learns that Ash got to battle the champion of Kalos. Ash explains that he and Greninja [[Bond Phenomenon|merged]] completely, which has Sawyer think back to when the same thing happened in [[XY106|their battle]], but Ash mentions how it was different than back then. {{an|Bonnie}} tells Sawyer about how Greninja had a Giant Water Shuriken on its back, but he soon gets confused as to what she means when she explains further. Ash decides it would be best to just show Sawyer what they mean by offering a battle, to which Sawyer accepts and asks for a three-on-three battle like the one they had last time to see how much stronger he has gotten since then.

Outside a forest, Officer Jenny, along with some of the town's people, prepare to investigate the forest. While making their way through, Manectric hears something, which catches the attention of Officer Jenny, and one of the town's people mentions that it is the same noise they had heard earlier, leading Officer Jenny to wonder what it could be. Just then the noise stops, but suddenly, wild Pokémon jump over a bush and dart past everyone before Jenny tells everyone to run when she notices something approaching them at a rapid pace. Everyone makes it out safely, but the sound of a {{p|Skiploom}} is heard crying out, causing Jenny to go and rescue it. Narrowly escaping with the Pokémon, Jenny makes it away safely, as Manectric sparks electricity towards the roots, and they come to a stop. Back in the forest, [[Team Flare]] are continuing with their experiments, having improved the results. [[Lysandre]] tells [[Xerosic]] to continue with the experiments before he turns his attention to {{DL|Recurring wild Pokémon in the anime|Z2}}, telling it that they will be using it later down the road. Z2 then contacts Squishy to make sure it is safe. Bonnie comes out to tell Squishy that Ash and Sawyer and going to battle, but notices that it seems worried about someone. Noticing this, Bonnie begins to sing to it, which relaxes it.

Ash and Greninja put their Battle Pulse Metre's on, as Sawyer asks what they are, to which Clemont explains that they're used to monitor the emotional synchronisation between Ash and Greninja, which is essential to the transformation Greninja goes through. Ash and Sawyer begin their battle as Sawyer sends out his {{p|Doublade}} against Ash's {{AP|Noivern}}. Ash start the battle by having Noivern attack with {{m|Acrobatics}}, but Sawyer goes on the defence and has Doublade use {{m|Iron Defense}} to reduce the damage. As Noivern continues to attack, Clemont reveals that Sawyer's goal is to tire out Noivern by blocking its attacks. Seeing an opportunity to attack, Sawyer commands Doublade to use {{m|Slash}}, sending Noivern crashing to the ground, creating a dust cloud, and then {{m|Night Slash}}. Struggling to find Noivern in the dust cloud after missing its attack, Ash commands Noivern to use {{m|Dragon Claw}} followed up by Acrobatics, which knocks Doublade out, earning Ash his first win of the battle. As Sawyer returns Doublade, he is impressed by how Noivern knew Doublade's position in the dust cloud, and Ash explains that it used sound waves to locate Doublade. Upon learning this information, Sawyer makes a note of the experience. Sawyer sends out his second Pokémon, {{p|Clawitzer}}. Sawyer commands Clawitzer to start off by using {{m|Crabhammer}}, which is avoided by Noivern before it attacks Clawitzer with {{m|Boomburst}}. After Clawitzer takes damage, Sawyer has it use {{m|Heal Pulse}} to heal itself, which is noticed by Clemont as he comments on how its ability, {{a|Mega Launcher}}, helped it to recover. Ash tells Noivern to use Dragon Claw, but Sawyer orders Clawitzer to use a not only super-effective {{m|Dragon Pulse}}, but having gained a boost in power from Mega Launcher, it deals enough damage to defeat Noivern. Ash sends out {{AP|Hawlucha}} out as his second Pokémon for the battle.

As Hawlucha dodges Dragon Pulse attacks, he delivers a {{m|High Jump Kick}} in return, which makes direct contact. Sawyer commands Clawitzer to use Dragon Pulse again, but Ash has Hawlucha dodge it before he commands him to go for Clawitzer's claw after realizing how powerful Mega Launcher is. As Hawlucha uses {{m|Flying Press}}, he swoops down to deliver the attack, but Sawyer predicted his strategy and has Clawitzer use Dragon Pulse on the ground to avoid damage. Seeing this, Ash tells Hawlucha to go higher than it and use Flying Press, but Sawyer draws him in and when Hawlucha gets close enough, he has Clawitzer use {{m|Ice Beam}}, dealing super-effective damage and defeating Hawlucha.

Ash is impressed by how much stronger Sawyer has gotten since last time and sends in Greninja, to which Saywer views battling Greninja as great experience and starts off by having Clawitzer use Dragon Pulse, but the attack is soon dodged. After many surprising strategies from Sawyer, Ash becomes unsure as to what to do, contemplating whether to attack or wait to see what Sawyer does and in doing so, increases his pulse. Sawyer commands Clawitzer to use Ice Beam, but Greninja blocks it by using {{m|Cut}} before charges through and striking Clawitzer, defeating it on the spot. Recalling Clawitzer after a hard battle, Sawyer sends out {{TP|Sawyer|Sceptile}} before he begins to think about how despite earning all eight badges, he has never won against Ash. Wanting to show Ash how strong he has become, Sawyer begins by commanding Sceptile to use Leaf Blade, but their attack is countered by Greninja's Aerial Ace. The two then release a fury of their own attacks, while continuing to block their opponent's. Sawyer has Sceptile use {{m|Bullet Seed}}, but their attack is countered once again, this time by {{m|Water Shuriken}}, causing an explosion. Going for a close-range attack, Sceptile uses Leaf Blade, only for it to be avoided by Greninja before it uses Double Team, but Sawyer has Sceptile use Leaf Blade again to lure out the real Greninja by destroying its copies. After destroying numerous copies, the real Greninja is found and narrowly avoids the Leaf Blade. With close-range attacks being Greninja's strong point, Ash puts it to use by commanding Greninja to use Cut, but Sawyer has Sceptile back away to avoid the attack, before attacking from a distance using {{m|Leaf Storm}}, which traps Greninja in the cyclone, shocking Ash before it falls to the ground. Serena notices how Sceptile kept its distance instead of going in close like it did previously, leading Clemont to comment on how well Sceptile is both close-range and long-distance. Ash is impressed again by how much stonger Sawyer has become in such a short time, but gets back to the battle by having Greninja use Aerial Ace. Attempting to confuse Sceptile, Greninja disappears and reappears behind Sceptile to deliver its attack, but Sceptile narrowly avoids it and slams Greninja using its tail. Ash decides to battle as one with Greninja as they prepare to merge, but the transformation fails as Clemont comments on the waves separating, leading Ash to wonder how they transformed in the first place. Noticing Ash isn't going to attack, he commands Sceptile to use Leaf Storm, trapping Greninja in the cyclone again before Sceptile uses Leaf Blade to defeat Greninja, earning Sawyer his first victory against Ash, which excites him hugely. Ash makes sure Greninja is alright before he recalls him, telling Sawyer that he has certainly become stronger since last time.

Ash hands Clemont the Battle Pulse Metre, mentioning how he wonders why he and Greninja couldn't transform, which even makes Clemont wonder, but mentions that the pulses didn't overlap once during the battle. Ash decides to drop it as over thinking about it wouldn't help and sets his mind back onto reaching Snowbelle City. Sawyer asks if he can join them to Snowbelle City as he wants to watch Ash win his eighth Kalos Gym badge, which Ash allows him to join them.

As the group continue to travel, they see Snowbelle City up ahead in the distance.
