Ash's Pikachu (Japanese: サトシのピカチュウ Satoshi's Pikachu) is the first Pokémon obtained by Ash on his journey as a Pokémon Trainer.

History
In the first episode of the Pokémon anime, Pokémon - I Choose You!, Ash woke up late the day he was supposed to go to Professor Oak's laboratory to obtain his first Pokémon. When he arrived at the lab, the three available starter Pokémon, Bulbasaur, Charmander, and Squirtle, had already been taken by other Trainers who arrived earlier. Seeing that Ash was disappointed, Professor Oak gave him Pikachu, which did not take a liking to his new Trainer, constantly zapping him and anyone else nearby. He refused to go into his Poké Ball, and when Ash failed to catch a wild Pokémon, he laughed at him. However, by the end of the episode, Ash gained Pikachu's trust by protecting him from an attack by a flock of Spearow and rushing him to the Pokémon Center. Pikachu and Ash soon became inseparable. In Pikachu's Goodbye, Ash gave Pikachu his consent to remain in a forest filled with Pikachu, but Pikachu decided to stay by Ash's side.

In general, Pikachu as a species are not particularly powerful, but Ash's Pikachu is an anomaly, overcoming odds in battle numerous times. In Showdown in Pewter City, he defeated Brock's Onix with an Electric attack that triggered the sprinkler system causing Onix to be drenched in water, one of its weaknesses. In Electric Shock Showdown, Pikachu fought Lt. Surge's Lt. Surge and lost. During a resulting hospital stay, he refused to become Raichu's equal by evolving via a Thunderstone, and in the second battle, Pikachu overcame Raichu by using his superior speed. The same situation happened in Pika and Goliath! where Pikachu reaffirmed his decision not to evolve. In Pokémon Emergency!, MTR remarked that Pikachu's power "far exceeds its evolutionary level". Ash's Pikachu has also defeated very powerful Pokémon that Ash's other Pokémon were unable to, such as Dragonite and Metagross. He has helped Ash win innumerable battles and Gym and League matches.

However, at times, Pikachu has lived up to his species' frail and brittle strengths, particularly in Gym battles where he was defeated with relative ease by his opponent; for example, he was overpowered very easily by Lt. Surge's Raichu, Sabrina's Kadabra, Blaine's Magmar, Bugsy's Scyther, Whitney's Miltank, Roark's Rampardos, Fantina's Drifblim, and Cress's Panpour. He also drew against Winona's Pelipper and Norman's Vigoroth, and struggled against Crasher Wake's Floatzel. Furthermore, he has lost twice to Trip's Servine, despite Trip being a starting Trainer and recently having obtained Servine.

Since Ash's first encounter with Team Rocket in Pokémon Emergency!, Pikachu has been pursued by the trio of Jessie, James, and MTR. Throughout the series, it has been Jessie, James and Meowth's desire to steal this Pokémon from Ash and present him to their boss. To do this, they have come up with many schemes. Though they have tried and continue to try hundreds of times, every last one of their plots fail, usually with the help of Ash, his friends, other Trainers, an Officer Jenny, or even themselves (such as in the first episode of the Diamond & Pearl).

Pikachu became the second non-legendary Pokémon to defeat a legendary Pokémon in the anime after Charizard, beating Pyramid King's Brandon's Regis in Pace - The Final Frontier, giving Ash his final Frontier Symbol.

Pikachu is also the only one of Ash's Pokémon to accompany him to the Hoenn and Unova regions, and was intended to be the only Pokémon to accompany him to Sinnoh before Aipom was discovered to have stowed away on the ship Ash was taking. Up until the capture of Dawn's Pachirisu, Pikachu was the only Electric Pokémon in the anime owned by a main character.

Even with its high level of electrical power, Pikachu has not stopped learning new attacks. Upon learning that Roxanne, the Rustboro Gym Leader used Rock-types, Ash had Pikachu begin learning Iron Tail in All Things Bright and Beautifly!. After training hard, Pikachu finally perfected it in The Winner by a Nosepass, where he used it to defeat Roxanne's Nosepass and earn Ash his first Hoenn badge. In addition to giving Pikachu an advantage over Rock-types, Iron Tail has allowed Pikachu to defeat many powerful opponents. In May's Egg-Cellent Adventure, during a battle with Team Rocket, Ash ordered Pikachu to do a Quick Attack. Much to the surprise of Ash and his friends, the Quick Attack morphed into Volt Tackle which sent Team Rocket blasting off. Until Dancing With the Ducklett Trio!, it has been one of Pikachu's signature moves. Also in the same episode, Pikachu learned Electro Ball while battling a trio of annoying Ducklett. Not only that, Pikachu has used his ability, Static, a few times in the anime.

In Hoenn, Pikachu learned how to surf. He also learned how to punch from Ash in The Punchy Pokémon. In Sinnoh, Ash used him during the Pokémon Ping Pong Tournament.

In Sinnoh, he defeated Roark's Onix in the Oreburgh Gym rematch. Pikachu battled again in the Pastoria Gym battle, where he battled Crasher Wake's Gyarados and defeated it with a Volt Tackle to the face. He also battled Crasher Wake's Floatzel for a moment, allowing Buizel time to recover. In Shield with a Twist!, Pikachu lost to Fantina's Drifblim after a fierce battle.

Pikachu's next major battle after Fantina, was when he was used against Paul in Evolving Strategies!. First he went up against Paul; however, when he attacked with Quick Attack, he was burned by Magmortar's Flame Body and Pikachu was recalled. Later, he went up against Paul's very powerful Paul and Paralysis it with Static. This actually made things worse for Pikachu as being paralyzed activated Ursaring's Guts ability, and Pikachu found himself completely outmatched by Ursaring's massive power and was defeated and thrown into Lake Acuity, taking him out of the match as well as injuring him. This defeat meant that Ash had to defeat Paul's remaining five Pokémon with only Chimchar.

Later, in Flint Sparks the Fire!, Pikachu battled Flint's Flint, but it was defeated after a long fight.

In The Eighth Wonder of the Sinnoh World!, Pikachu battled against Volkner's Electivire and won, giving him his first victory over a Pokémon in the Electabuzz evolutionary line. However, he was defeated by Volkner's Luxray.

In the Lily of the Valley Conference, Ash used Pikachu in his battle against Paul in Familiarity Breeds Strategy!. It was used against Paul's Aggron, where it put up a good fight and weakened Aggron before it was recalled in place of Infernape. Pikachu was also used in the continuation of Ash's battle against Paul in A Real Rival Rouser!. It went against Paul's Froslass where he was seen having some trouble at first, but by the end, he was able to pull through and defeat Froslass with a powerful Volt Tackle attack. This gave Pikachu his first win against one of Paul's Pokémon and also gave Ash the lead in the battle. In Battling a Thaw in Relations!, he battled Paul's Electivire, but had trouble due to Electivire's Motor Drive ability, and was soon defeated by a Brick Break. In The Semi-Final Frontier!, Pikachu was the last Pokémon chosen by Ash to battle Tobias in the semi-finals. Despite Ash losing five of his Pokémon, Pikachu tried its best to defeat Tobias's Latios. Almost none of the attacks hit or did any damage to Latios in the beginning, however, Pikachu finally managed to jump on top of Latios and used Thunderbolt several times before he was shaken off. As Pikachu was about to land, Latios used Luster Purge. Pikachu used Volt Tackle and Iron Tail, taking against the force of the Luster Purge. However, it was tied with Latios as both fainted. As Ash's last Pokémon also fainted, Tobias was crowned the winner of their battle.

Ash decided to just bring Pikachu to Unova with him, just like he did in Hoenn. In In The Shadow of Zekrom!, Pikachu had an encounter with Zekrom, which unaware by Ash, caused Pikachu to lose its ability to use Electric-type moves. Ash finally noticed this when it battled Trip's Trip, losing in the process. In Enter Iris and Axew!, it regained its ability to use Electric-type attacks and was used in battle which led to the capture of Pidove. In Triple Leaders, Team Threats!, Ash used Pikachu in his Gym battle at the Striaton Gym, where he faced Cress and his Panpour. Even though he tried his best, Pikachu was just not as fast as Panpour and was defeated without landing a single hit. In A Battle for Club Champ!, he battled Trip's Tranquill, who had already taken out Ash's Oshawott and Tepig. It took a beating from multiple Aerial Aces, but showed Trip the power of its electrical attacks by defeating Tranquill with Volt Tackle. It then battled Snivy again, who by then had evolved into Servine. However, despite not being incapacitated, he was once again defeated. In Minccino-Neat and Tidy!, Ash used Pikachu in a battle against Bianca and her Bianca. Even though he had some trouble at first, Pikachu was able to pull through in the end and defeat Pignite with a powerful Volt Tackle.

In Dancing With the Ducklett Trio!, a trio of Ducklett stole Ash's hat and Sandile's sunglasses. One of the Ducklett dropped an umbrella on Pikachu while he was about to use Thunderbolt. Pikachu was unable to release electricity because of it. While Sandile battled the three Ducklett, Pikachu joined the battle as well and after taking a direct hit from the Ducklett, Pikachu began releasing electricity and formed an Electro Ball and sent the Ducklett flying. Later on, it battled against the Sunglasses Sandile. Even though Sandile evolved into Sunglasses, Pikachu used Electro Ball and sent Stone Edge right back at Krokorok and it was sent flying.

Ash used Pikachu in his third Gym battle against Burgh at the Castelia Gym in Battling For The Love of Bug-Types!. Pikachu went up against Burgh's Leavanny and after a tough battle, Pikachu was able to win it with a powerful Iron Tail and Electro Ball combo.

In Movie Time! Zorua and the Pokémon Knight! Pikachu played a movie role as Ash's assistant. He battled Iris's Axew in order to gain the power to defeat the villain and his assistant. He succeeded with a Thunderbolt-Electro Ball combo. He later defeated the villain and rescued the princess.

Ash used Pikachu in the final round in the Club Battle in Club Battle Finale: A Hero's Outcome! against Iris. Pikachu went up against Iris's Excadrill. Pikachu had a very hard time battling Excadrill, as Excadrill is part Ground and Pikachu's Electric moves would have no effect on it. Pikachu did surprisingly well, however. Unfortunately, Pikachu fainted first, and Iris won the tournament.

In BW050, Ash couldn't choose who to use after Palpitoad and Snivy fainted, Pikachu got fed up and zapped him, Ash then chosed to use Pikachu in his Gym Battle against Elesa. He went up against her powerful Emolga, who even though it knew Attract, Pikachu beat it with a single Quick Attack. Later, Pikachu battled Elesa's Tynamo, who only knew Tackle, but was still very strong. Yet Pikachu was able to beat Tynamo with a powerful Iron Tail attack, winning Ash the Bolt.

In BW059 Pikachu teamed up with Cilan's Stunfisk to battle Tornadus and Thundurus. Stunfisk used his amazing jumping ability to get them both in to the air so that they could launch a Thunderbolt—Thundershock combination at the two legendary Pokémon. However, Pikachu was knocked off Stunfisk's back and his partner was then struck by a powerful Hammer Arm. Later in BW060, Pikachu helped rescue the kami trio from TRT. He used Thunderbolt on Dr. Zager's helicopter, joined by Roggenrola, Iris's Axew and Iris and Cilan's Pansage to cause the forcefield prisons trapping the trio to break.

Personality and characteristics
Pikachu is extremely loyal to Ash, and while he is not always immediately trusting of strangers, he is generally friendly to humans and Pokémon alike. He acted as a guardian and big brother to Misty's Togepi, and has been seen mediating and even breaking up fights among other Pokémon, such as in Pikachu's Vacation. In Mewtwo Strikes Back, Pikachu, MTR, and Meowth's clone were the only Pokémon not to participate in the giant battle; Pikachu stood motionless as his clone repeatedly slapped his face. Contrary to his distrusting nature, Pikachu took a liking to Misty very early in the series, and he has retained this liking of Misty throughout the series, such as when he was very happy to see her in The Scheme Team.

However, even Pikachu has had exceptions to this rule. In Pikachu Re-Volts, Pikachu was controlled by Butch and Cassidy, which caused him to become evil and disobey Ash's commands. During the Hoenn saga, Pikachu temporarily developed amnesia and sided with Team Rocket for a while. Later within the same series, Pikachu was possessed by the List of key items in Generation III and controlled by Groudon, nearly causing a disaster. On several occasions, Pikachu has developed an "electric flu" causing him to become overcharged, and extremely powerful. During these instances, Pikachu will sometimes accidentally let off electric outbursts which can be set off on anyone, including Ash. In all of these cases, Pikachu did not intentionally mean harm upon anyone.

As shown in a handful of episodes, the first being Showdown at Dark City, Pikachu has a special fondness for ketchup, but he will eat and enjoy almost any other human or Pokémon food. A running joke in the anime also seems to be the destruction of a female character's bike with one of Pikachu's Thunderbolts at the beginning of each series, which then causes her to follow Ash for the remainder of the series. This has happened to Misty, May, and Dawn so far, but did not happen to Iris, since she doesn't have a bike. Instead, Pikachu shocked Iris herself.
Personality & Development: Ash's Pikachu
Pikachu, like his Trainer, is always happy to battle. He often tries his very best, but when he loses, he doesn't complain or feel bad about himself, especially when Ash reassures him. Ash and Pikachu are almost identical personality-wise, and thus are the perfect match for one another, and most others agree, with the exception of Burgundy, who in A Connoisseur's Revenge! said that Ash had a terrible relationship with all of his Pokémon. In the original Pokemon series, Pikachu's squeak is very high pitched. Soon enough, Pikachu's squeak pitch is lowered down.

*Leer was first seen in The School of Hard Knocks. When Giselle called for Cubone to use Leer, Ash told Pikachu to "Leer right back" by making funny faces. It later used Leer in Hour of the Houndour; however, this was the actual move, albeit, an anime move error still.
*An attack where Pikachu stored electricity in his tail similar to Slam was used to defeat Lt. Surge's Raichu in Electric Shock Showdown. A similar move, referred to as "Shocking Tail" by the MC, was used to defeat Drake's Ditto in Hello Pummelo!.
*Rocket Punch was a move that Pikachu used while "boxing" Anthony's Hitmonchan in The Punchy Pokémon. Pikachu glowed red and shot off his boxing gloves, leaving off a trail of smoke. Once the smoke disappears, Pikachu still has his boxing gloves on and flies towards Hitmonchan at high speed.
*Thunder Armor was a one-time technique in the episode Solid as a Solrock, Pikachu is seen using Thunder on himself while riding Ash's Swellow. This increased their attack power greatly, and they easily overpowered their opponents.
In the main series, Red's Pikachu is noticeably based on Ash's Pikachu: not only does Red receive it from Professor Oak after his rival, Oak's grandson, takes the last starter Pokémon in Yellow, but it follows Red around rather than being kept in a Poké Ball. In Generation II and HeartGold and SoulSilver, Pikachu is the highest-leveled member of Red's team when he is encountered at Mt. Silver, and the highest leveled Pokémon owned by a Trainer in the entire series excluding battle arenas. His moves, notably in HeartGold and SoulSilver, are the four moves most used by Ash's Pikachu at the time of the games' release.

A Japanese event distributed an in-game representation of Ash's Pikachu via Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection and at participating Japanese McDonald's locations which was held from July 15th through August 10, 2010. This Pikachu was distributed at participating American Toys 'R' Us locations from January 30 to February 13, 2011, and Canadian Toys 'R' Us locations from February 9 to February 20, 2011. Unlike Ash's Pikachu, this Pikachu does not reject the Thunderstone, and can be evolved at any time.
In the manga
In the Ash and Pikachu manga
Ash's Pikachu is a starring character in the Ash and Pikachu manga series, which is based on the Johto saga of the Pokémon anime.

In the The Electric Tale of Pikachu manga
Ash's Pikachu is a starring character in the manga series
The Electric Tale of Pikachu, which is loosely based on the Pokémon anime. Pikachu appears in every chapter of the manga.

Like in the anime, Pikachu was Ash's first Pokémon. However, Ash did not receive Pikachu from Professor Oak - instead, he finds Pikachu under the floorboards of his home, chewing on wires to eat the electricity. His mother asks him to take Pikachu outside, but when Gary Oak taunts Ash about how he has not yet become a Pokémon Trainer, Ash decides to keep Pikachu as his first Pokémon.

Like in the anime, Pikachu was originally unwilling to obey Ash, but after Ash protects Pikachu from a flock of wild Spearow and a Fearow, Pikachu gains respect for Ash, and after Ash defeats Brock, he is named Jean Luc Pikachu (Japanese ジャン•リュック ピカチュウ Jean Luc Pikachu).

Later on, when Ash is in a Gym battle with Misty, Pikachu is petrified by the sight of her Gyarados and does not battle, while in his Gym battle with Sabrina, it is easily bested by her Abra.

Pikachu likes Misty and greets her enthusiastically whenever she appears, often ignoring Ash in the process.
Ash's Pikachu, along with Ash, Misty and Brock, makes a cameo appearance in the bonus chapters at the end of every volume of the Magical Pokémon Journey manga series. In the bonus chapters, Ash and friends have mistakenly wandered into the Magical Pokémon Journey world and are trying to return back to the world of the anime, encountering many unusual situations along the way, including encounters of aspects of the Magical Pokémon Journey canon which are different in anime canon.

Ash's Pikachu shows a video to Pikachu of him bouncing a Poké Ball on his head in One Hundred Fifty-One.
* Pikachu is Ash's only Electric Pokémon and was the only Electric-type owned by a main character in the anime until the capture of Dawn by Dawn.
* For DP013, Professor Oak's lecture is about Ash's Pikachu. He writes this Pokémon senryū about him: パートナー　サトシとピカチュウ　いいかんじ Partners Satoshi and Pikachu: a pleasant feeling.
* Pikachu was the first of Ash's Pokémon to disobey him. Other Pokémon that would do so, and be better remembered for their disobedience than Pikachu, are Primeape and Charizard.
* Pikachu is the second Pokémon in the entire anime series to have managed to defeat a legendary Pokémon, which he did by defeating Pyramid King's Brandon's Regis in Pace - The Final Frontier!.
* In Where No Togepi Has Gone Before! it was confirmed that Pikachu is male. Voice actress Ikue Ohtani stated prior to this episode that the writers had intended to keep Pikachu's gender ambiguous so the fanbase can connect with him more easily.
* It is the only Pokémon of Ash's to be used in every Gym battle in a region.
* In Latin America, Cartoon Network has a "Biografia Toon" segment, which consists of biographies and histories of cartoon characters. This segment has done a two-part feature on Ash's Pikachu. According to the segment, Pikachu is the result of an experiment conducted by Professor Oak and allegedly destroyed the lab where he was created in a momentary loss of control.
* An Elite Coverup! has been the only time when Ash does not use Pikachu against an Elite Four member.
* Pikachu seems to have a talent for mimicking Pokémon, as seen from his performance during a cosplay competition. He will occasionally use pantomime to specify what he is talking about. He can contort his face and his ears to imitate Ash, his Turtwig, Jessie, among others. This capability of Pikachu's was also featured during part of the credits of Gotta Dance.

Pikachu's language
Some of Pikachu's speech is consistent enough that it seems that some phrases actually mean something. (In Stealing The Conversation, Team Rocket refers to this language as "PikaSpeak," however, this most likely isn't official.) For instance, Pikachu always uses "Pikapi" when referring to Ash (notice that it sounds somewhat similar to "Satoshi"). Other speech includes:
*Pi-Kachu: He says this during the sponsor spots in the original Japanese.
*Pikachu-Pi: Misty (Misty)
Meowth (Japanese: ニャース Nyarth) is a member of Team Rocket in a trio with Jessie and James.

In the anime
When he was younger, Meowth lived on the streets in Hollywood after he came there in search of fame and fortune. He was a member of a gang of street Meowth that was led by a Persian; the gang annoyed the humans in town, stealing food and causing trouble in general. One day, Meowth came across a female Meowth named Meowzie. Since she rejected him and preferred the company of her rich human mistress, Meowth attempted to make himself stand out from other Meowth and become more human-like to make himself "worthy" of her. Thus, he painstakingly taught himself to speak human language in a New York accent and walk upright like a human. When he approached her after this transformation, she once again rejected him, calling him a freak. Heartbroken, Meowth remembered the first human word he learned to speak - "rocket" - and was inspired to join Team Rocket. In Japanese, he often puts the word "Nya" into his sentences, the equivalent of a meow in Japanese. This was abandoned in the English dub shortly into the beginning of the series. Because Meowth can speak human but is a Pokémon, he is useful as a Pokémon translator. Despite being a Pokémon though, he is in charge of building and repairing the machines used by his team.

In Go West, Young Meowth, Meowth, Jessie, and James returned to Hollywood while following Ash, and Meowth was reunited with Meowzie, who had since been abandoned by her mistress and was forced to join the gang of street Meowth. Meowth fought his former Persian leader to win Meowzie's love, and won, but Meowzie demonstrated that her loyalty was with Persian since he took care of her when she needed it, and Meowth was once again heartbroken.

Because of the effort Meowth exerted while learning to speak and walk like a human, he has not learned the signature move of his species, Pay Day. In Meowth Rules, Meowth was worshiped by an island of people who believed that he could bring them riches with Pay Day. When he was caught in a battle meant to induce Pay Day, Jessie and James had to secretly bail him out by throwing the last of their spare change and some of James' prized bottlecaps in order to appease the islanders. Upon learning of its species' love for gathering coins and shiny objects from Ash's Pokédex later in Do I Hear a Ralts?, Jessie criticized him for not doing so.

There has been some debate as to whether or not Meowth was ever Giovanni's "Top Cat" (personal pet). He has stated himself as such in front of Giovanni with no objection (only to say that Giovanni was now in that position). Yet in Training Daze, he was shown to have been present at Team Rocket Headquarters for a short time, during which we see that Persian is already there. During this time, Meowth became a servant to Giovanni, bringing him food and drinks; however, he was unsuccessful at this task because he tripped over a wire, spilled Giovanni's coffee and got himself electrocuted. Giovanni didn't appear to be angry, but he assigned Meowth to Jessie and James's team. In light of this, it should be noted that Training Daze potentially contradicted other stated facts from previous episodes regarding Team Rocket's back story.

Several times, Meowth and Pikachu have had to team up, such as in the episodes Bound for Trouble and Hoenn Alone when both were separated from their respective parties. His relationship with Jessie and James varies in quality; for example, in Go West, Young Meowth they stated that they regarded Meowth as a friend, but in Bound for Trouble, having discovered Meowth and Pikachu after the two had been stuck together, they both stated that they had really been looking for Pikachu and Meowth was just 'part of the package'. Meowth seems to have aspects of each of his teammates in him; in arguments, he can often be seen siding with either Jessie (usually denouncing James' incompetence) or James (usually complaining about Jessie's overdramatic and rash behavior). Despite these fights, the three remain very close and loyal friends, although at one point in Giovanni's Gym in Viridian City, they threatened to split up. However they realized they had over reacted, and became friends again, proving themselves very loyal to each other.

Meowth also has demonstrated aspirations of being a parent-like caretaker, coddling Misty's egg before fighting for custody of it only to finally lose it to Misty. To regain custody of Togepi, he even defeated Brock's Onix by throwing a bucket of water in its face and finishing it with a Fury Swipes attack to the head.

Meowth has also, since late Johto, had frequent fantasies about presenting Giovanni with various Pokémon. These fantasies often involve whatever creature it happens to be assisting Giovanni in his daily routine.

Much like Ash's Pikachu, Meowth does not stay inside a Poké Ball, but is technically a wild Pokémon unlike Pikachu. Strangely, though he first appeared in the second episode, in an era where Ash scanned nearly every Pokémon he came into contact with with his Pokédex, it took until Do I Hear a Ralts? for Ash to do this to Meowth. However, this was a mere accident: Meowth was dressed up like a Kirlia, and Ash had never seen one before. In Two Degrees of Separation, Dawn, unlike Ash, scanned him right away. She also made the same mistake as Ash when she scanned Meowth as a Shiftry in Leave it to Brocko!. Also in the episode The Lost Lapras the character Tracey started examining Meowth (despite not having a Pokédex), but only because he was interested in the fact that he could talk.

Meowth normally does not battle unless there are extreme circumstances; his explanation is that his ability to talk and walk upright came at the expense of battling ability. However, when forced to fight, Meowth is fairly resourceful, such as dumping a bucket of water on an Onix to weaken it. In Jumping Rocket Ship , however, Meowth fought extremely well, even knocking out Barry's Barry with Fury Swipes, which normally wouldn't do much damage. Yet just two episodes later, in Get Your Rotom Running!, Meowth was unable to break a display case using Scratch. Meowth's Fury Swipes attack was shown to slice dough in order to make ramen in the episode, Noodles! Roamin' Off!. Christopher, a former Team Rocket member and the owner of the ramen shop, saw Meowth do this and asked him to work in his restaurant as a noodle maker. After some thought, which included reflecting back on previous failures and the lack of appreciation and respect from Jessie and James, Meowth quit the Team Rocket Trio and accepted the offer. However, he eventually rejoined the group after hearing that James and Jessie were in danger.

Meowth has used his claws to pick locks on several occasions, such as when Jessie, James, and he wanted to get into the Old Chateau in Canalave City.

Jessie also used him during the Princess Festival in the episode Princess vs. Princess, Jessie's contest in Mean With Envy and the Pokémon Ping Pong Tournament in To Thine Own Pokémon Be True!.

In the Appeals Round in the contest, he created an ice sculpture of Giovanni, his Persian and himself.

In "the Jester"'s battle with Erica, he used "Transform". He did this by using the pouch attached to his belly. He transformed into a Sunflora first, using Razor Leaf against Jynx. Later, he transformed into a Kirlia and again into a Wailord. It popped the inflatable Wailord with its claws and "the Jester" was eventually disqualified.

In the Ping Pong tournament, Jessie and Meowth were disqualified since Meowth sliced the ball with his claws, instead of hitting it. In Dressed for Jess Success!, James disguised as Jessilina due to Jessie being sick. Meowth, following his promise in Old Rivals, New Tricks!, is used for the appeal, where it used its talent for slicing ramen. The two then gave the judges the ramen to taste. Upon seeing the appeal on TV, Christopher became very proud.

In the Best Wishes, Jessie, James, and Meowth were sent to the Unova region under orders from Giovanni after they were promoted in Memories are Made of Bliss!. To prevent them from getting too much attention, Giovanni did not allow Jessie's and James's other Pokémon to be sent to them, only making them use Pokémon native to Unova. This, however, made Meowth think of what would happen to him. Throughout most of the series, Meowth and his two friends were presented as horribly failing and erroneous criminals, always failing in their missions to capture Ash's Pikachu or other Pokémon. Recently, however, he, along with the rest of his team, developed a more serious attitude in their work, as he had when first introduced, being quicker-witted and much more resourceful than before and using ingenious methods of escape and thus proving much more difficult for Ash to defeat. He has also demonstrated much more battling skill than before, being agile enough to land on his feet when blown back by Ash's Pidove's Gust, and unlike before, does not horribly injure himself in battle.

In Club Battle Finale: A Hero's Outcome!, while in Nimbasa City, Team Rocket prepared to put their latest plan into action. Later, in the next episode, Meowth was found injured by Ash, Iris and Cilan. While recovering, Meowth explained that while in Nimbasa City, he had botched up Team Rocket's scheme badly and was fired by Giovanni, leading to Jessie and James turning their backs on him. Later, Iris's Axew was kidnapped by a Scrafty, who wanted Axew's help to get its home back from a Mandibuzz. Using his ability to speak to both Pokémon and humans, Meowth not only helped get Axew back but also helped Scrafty get its home back and helped Mandibuzz return to her original nest. Afterwards, Meowth decided to travel with Ash and his friends, only for Iris to attempt to capture him in a Poké Ball. The capture nearly succeeded but Meowth broke out and told her he was going to help her regardless. Ever since, it seems to have become a running gag that he ends up in a Poké Ball at one point in an episode, as Iris tried twice (one of which was because Meowth didn't want a Purrloin to get caught), and by Cliff. However, in Crisis from the Underground Up!, it was revealed that Meowth's being fired was fake and all just one of Team Rocket's schemes to capture Ash's and friend's Pokémon.

Personality and characteristics
Personality & Development: Meowth
Meowth has an ambitious, conniving, and idealistic personality. He has made it his life goal to please Giovanni (or "Boss," as he and his teammates call Giovanni), and will stop at nothing to capture or steal useful or rare Pokémon, especially Ash's Pikachu, which he has been pursuing since he encountered it in Pokémon Emergency.

Despite his seemingly outgoing nature, Meowth also has a contemplative inner side not seen as often. In one of his image songs, Meowth's Song, and in Mewtwo Strikes Back, he is shown to be a bit of a philosopher. In Mewtwo Strikes Back, he and his clone (in addition to Pikachu) were the only Pokémon not to participate in the giant battle, Meowth remarking (in the dub) that the originals and the clones shared the same air, moon, and planet, giving them common ground. Meowth comforted Ash's Chimchar in Tears For Fears! and actually expressed some admiration for Ash and his friends, commenting, "You [Chimchar] have buddies who'd give you the shirt off their backs if you needed one." On a few occasions, Meowth has become stranded with Pikachu, and during these times, the two work together fairly well. Pikachu distrusts Meowth for obvious reasons but Meowth is more willing to let go of the past and work together. Usually, by the end of these episodes, Meowth will betray Pikachu once they find Jessie and James.

Meowth is an amorous Pokémon, developing crushes on occasion (obviously not as much as Brock, but still a fair amount). The first of these was the aforementioned Meowzie. The next one seen is Cassandra, the (human) herbalist. Due to this infatuation, he decided to help her Paras evolve. However, he was replaced by a Persian so that he can continue traveling with Jessie and James, as Cassandra thought he was a hero and should continue doing his (not so) good work with Team Rocket. After this, three more cat-based Pokémon followed, beginning with May's Skitty. However, due to the fact that Jessie wanted to catch the Skitty, Meowth helped it escape in order to avoid Skitty getting hurt with the rest of the team. Later on, in Big Meowth, Little Dreams he falls in love with another Skitty. In For The Love Of Meowth, Meowth fell in love with a Glameow this time, one that belongs to Mamie. Similar to May's Skitty, Meowth tries to get away from Jessie and James so Glameow would not join them in blasting off. After Meowth was surrounded by Jessie, James, Ash, Dawn, Brock and Mamie, Meowth gained power from the love he felt, allowing him to defeat several Pokémon thrown at him, including Ash's Infernape and Staraptor, Jessie's Seviper and Jessie and Dawn's Togekiss. However, after getting hit with James's Carnivine's Bullet Seed, Glameow evolves into Purugly and squishes Meowth, making Meowth lose its feelings for it. In Movie Time! Zorua in "The Legend of the Pokémon Knight"!, Luke's Zorua used this trait to her advantage and turned into a female Meowth causing Meowth to become infatuated and unable to do her harm. He did this again in Purrloin: Sweet or Sneaky? when he fell in love with a Purrloin he thought was female.
He seems to often clash with Ash's Oshawott, usually when the two exploit two of their characteristics at the same time (falling in love, with the same Pokémon, or when their prides being entangled). In some episodes in the Johto Journeys arc, he seems to usually call James 'Jimmy'.
* Meowth claimed to be learning Night Slash in Jumping Rocket Ship!, but he has never been seen using the move. The reason to this is that he claimed the move too scary to use.
* Meowth also improvised a move that he called "Fury Swipes of Love" in the episode For The Love Of Meowth to protect a Glameow he was in love with.
Pokémon Puzzle League
Meowth is a playable character, along with Jessie and James. Their theme is Double Trouble.
Pokémon Zany Cards
In Special Seven mode, Meowth appears as card #2. When the Meowth card is used, he will force the opponent to draw 2 cards. This can be countered if the player has another Meowth card, in which case the effect will pass on to the next player, unless they also have a Meowth card, and so on.

Meowth also makes a cameo in Four Kings mode. When the game is won, he tells the player to try the next level of difficulty. Meowth also appears on the box art.

Super Smash Bros. Melee
Meowth appears as a trophy. This trophy is unlocked after obtaining each All-Star trophy for all 25 playable characters.
Melee trophy information
This...is Meowth's dream. Meowth strides all over the globe scattering invitations to other Pokemon, insisting they come to "Meowth's Party". At this wonderful party, guests are packed in like sardines as Meowth climbs up the stage with its faithful guitar. It strikes a chord, pauses, and then rocks their world.

Pokémon Channel
Meowth appears on the PNF (Pokémon News Flash), along with Psyduck. He goes out and interviews random Pokémon in random locations.

Meowth also appears in Pichu Bros. in Party Panic, along with Jessie's Wobbuffet and the Squirtle Squad. He plans a party for himself and invites all the Pokémon from Big Town.

In the manga
In the Electric Tale of Pikachu
Meowth appears in The Electric Tale of Pikachu manga series along with his teammates Jessie and James.

His first appearance is in the chapter Pikachu's Excellent Adventure. He is searching for the Hidden Village with Jessie and James when he runs into Tommy, Pikachu and other Pokémon, who are also searching for the village. Meowth offers them free breakfast (made by Jessie and James) and the trio travel with them to the village. Later, he is expelled from the Hidden Village by Kangaskhan when Jessie and James try to steal the Pokémon.

Meowth makes his next appearance in You Gotta Have Friends, when he, Jessie and James attempt to steal a herd of wild Pikachu.

In the TCG
Meowth is featured in the TCG as one of Team Rocket's Pokémon and as a Pokémon M M. The following is a list of cards featuring Meowth.

Trivia
* There is some inconsistency as to whether or not Meowth hates water. In Snow Way Out!, what he wanted was a hot spring, and in Who Gets to Keep Togepi?, he is seen taking a bath with the egg that will hatch into Misty, and at least twice he suggests that all three of them go into the water (once in Pokémon Paparazzi and once in Fit to be Tide). However, in Pokémon Shipwreck, Friend and Foe Alike and Big Meowth, Little Dreams (Part 1), he hates water, as he is a cat.
* Meowth will often replace the words "Me" or "Mouth" with "Meowth". Similar puns are also used in the Japanese version.

* The Koban (coin) embedded in Meowth's forehead had apparently been lost in A Chansey Operation after an accident, forcing him to search it desperately. At the end of the episode, however, it was discovered that it had simply been jammed into his head by the impact.
** Additionally, Meowth had a fantasy about replacing the gold koban with a crystal one in The Crystal Onix.
* Meowth claims he is unable to learn Pay Day as a trade off for learning to speak. He claims to have 'used up all his move slots' doing so.
** Ironically, Meowth can use Pay Day in Yellow.
* In the Latin American Spanish dub, he is referred to as "Chimuelo" ("toothless") by James, a common form used in Mexico.
* In the Brazilian Portuguese, Hungarian and Finland dubs, he is referred to as "Miau" (meow).
<!--* In the Italian dub he is referred to as "Miao" from the twelfth anime series.-->
The Sunyshore Gym is a three room Gym where the main floor is made up of gigantic gears and clockwork suspending platforms operated by buttons. To get through, trainers need to rotate the platforms in a correct order to create a path. The Gym has exposed dynamos that use up a large amount of electrical power, prompting the city to renovate the pathways into solar energy collectors.
However, after seeing Flint and Ash battle, he regained his enthusiasm and decided to battle Ash. In DP166, Ash's match against Volkner is suspended due to power outage. Team Rocket back in DP16decided to steal the Sunyshore Tower and successfully did it in DP166. Koya (Japanese: コウヤ Kōya) is a character in Pokémon Diamond and Pearl Adventure. He is a member of the International Police.

Character
Koya is a Pokémon Trainer and a member of the International Police, a law-enforcement organization that tracks down the various evil organizations in the Pokémon world. In terms of personality, Koya is cold and does not hesitate to show his opinion of someone, whether it be negative or positive. Despite his cold nature, he truly loves Pokémon and joined the International Police to stop those that would harm Pokémon.

It is revealed that in the past, he was once like any regular Pokémon Trainer, but an accident that traumatized his beloved Growlithe. Koya felt guilty for the accident and joined the International Police to prevent such things from happening again.

History
spoiler
Koya first appears as a competitor of the Sinnoh League where he is seen witnessing the first round of the tournament. When Hareta notices his Absol and tries to touch it, Koya coldly punches him for trying to touch his Pokémon without permission. Sensing that he is strong, Hareta asks Koya for a Pokémon battle.

After seeing Hareta's Hareta, Koya decides to test Hareta's strength and agrees to battle him. Using his Absol, Koya easily strikes down Empoleon and states that Hareta isn't worth battling. When he is about to leave, Hareta reveals that his Empoleon is still able to battle and launches a counterattack. The battle is cut short when Mitsumi freezes Hareta's attack and apologizes to Koya for Hareta's actions.

In the first round, Koya faces Jun and easily defeats all of his Pokémon in less than a minute. When Jun goes to thank him for the match, Koya coldly tells Jun that he is unfit to be a Pokémon Trainer. Hareta stands up for Jun and claims that he will beat Koya. In the next round, Koya faces another Trainer and easily defeats him with just his Metagross.

In the semi-final round, Koya is paired up against Hareta in the A-Block section of the tournament. The two Trainers battle fiercely and they both express their beliefs on Pokémon training to the other. When Hareta calls their battle fun, Koya becomes enraged and remembers back to when he was a Pokémon Trainer just like Hareta. He recalls the moment where his Growlithe was horribly defeated in a battle and had its spirit broken, preventing it from battling.

Koya calls Hareta unfit to be a Pokémon Trainer and furiously attacks with the intent of beating his beliefs into Hareta. The battle rages on until they are both down to one Pokémon. The battle is cut short when Looker informs him that Kaisei, Hareta's father, is at the tournament and so is Team Galactic. When Team Galactic begins their attack and reveals their plan to blow up the stadium with a super-powerful bomb, Koya and everyone else uses their Pokémon to have the bomb explode inside of a powerful shield, preventing it from hurting anyone. After being thanked by Hareta for his help, Koya tells him that they will settle their fight later and goes off to chase the runaway Kaisei.

Koya appears at Stark Mountain to arrest Charon along with any other Team Galactic members there despite Hareta's pleas to not arrest Mars. After Koya refuses, Hareta angrily attacks, causing Charon to escape and freeing the Pokémon that Charon was looking for, Heatran. Heatran begins attacking everyone with its powerful flames and traps them in the volcano. However, with teamwork, they manage to calm down Heatran, making it friendly and causing it to free them. They find Looker there and he asks Koya if he saw any more members of Team Galactic inside. Koya lies, saying he didn't find any more members, allowing Mars to escape because she saved him from some falling boulders earlier.

Koya later appears at the Galactic Veilstone Building to prevent Hareta and his friends from entering the building as Looker and his men are already infiltrating it. Unfortunately, the mission turns out to be a failure when Looker and his men emerge from the building after being defeated by Charon. Koya and Hareta become infuriated and team up to face Charon and his powerful army of Pokémon.

Koya and Hareta enter the Neo Team Galactic building, finding that the Pokémon were being controlled by a special machine. They team up and manage to destroy the machine and turn the Pokémon back to normal without seriously harming them. As they trek through the building, they meet Charon face to face in a special arena.

Koya is shocked to find that his beloved Growlithe is there with Charon. Charon explains that he is controlling Growlithe with a smaller version of the machine that he used on his army, making it harder to get off. Koya refuses to harm Growlithe and even jumps in front of attacks meant for Hareta. Hareta realizes that Growlithe still cares for Koya and manages to free it from the machine with the same attack that traumatized it in the first place. Finally freed from its control, Hareta explains that Growlithe never hated Koya and was willing to overcome its fear of water for him. Reuinted with his beloved partner, Koya and Growlithe embrace each other.

After Charon leaves with Kaisei to try and capture Giratina, Koya and Hareta follow them using Kaisei's Plusle. With the help of Jun, they enter the Distortion World only to find Kaisei unconscious and Giratina wildly attacking everything. After finding Charon and having the situation explained to them, Hareta decides to battle Giratina. Hareta, along with Jun and Koya, battle with the Legendary Pokémon, but it proves to be too strong for them. Eventually, Giratina uses its powers to pull all of them back into the real world, where it faces them in its Altered Forme.

They are saved by Dialga and Palkia, who arrive to battle Giratina. As they battle, Professor Rowan, Mitsumi, Cyrus, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, and B-2 all come to help them. When Mitsumi hands Hareta some berries to heal his Pokémon, everyone is shocked to find him feeding Giratina one as well. After yelling at Hareta for his actions, Hareta explains that he wants to learn about Giratina through battling with it. Giratina accepts Hareta's offer and everyone faces Hareta and Giratina in battle; once all is said and done, Giratina, Dialga, and Palkia leaves while everyone says goodbye. Sometime later, Koya and Hareta prepare to finish their battle at the Sinnoh Pokémon League Tournament.

After the tournament had ended, Koya visits Hareta at his home on 201. Koya gives Hareta the offer to join the International Police and take down the new evil organizations that have sprung up in other regions. Before Hareta can answer, he runs off and runs over Mitsumi. When Mitsumi talks to Koya about the offer he gave to Hareta, she explains that he is not the kind of person to join them. Koya accepts this and joins Hareta and Mitsumi as they set off onto another adventure.
Mitsumi (Japanese: ミツミ) is a main character of Pokémon Diamond and Pearl Adventure! and the assistant of Professor Rowan. Her clothing implies that she is based on Dawn; however, her hairstyle is clearly distinctive.

spoilers
Character
Little is known about the early details of Mitsumi's life, but when she was young, the lonely and isolated Mitsumi joined Team Galactic, and was raised to become an Ultimate Fighting Machine that would never hesitate to obliterate both Pokémon and Trainers alike. It wasn't until she met Professor Rowan that she started to change. The Professor taught her all about how Pokémon should be companions and should be treated with kindness, not as tools. He then gave her a Chimchar, which helped her to realize the true friendship Pokémon can provide. She subsequently left Team Galactic, battling Jupiter on the way, and became Professor Rowan's assistant as well as a highly talented Pokémon Coordinator.

History
One day, the Professor sent her out to find Hareta, a boy who had spent years living with wild Pokémon on 201, so that the two of them could go on a quest to find the mythical Pokémon Dialga, known as the god of time. As she set off with Hareta, he and his
Hareta were kidnapped by Team Galactic in Jubilife City and taken to the Oreburgh Mine. She managed to tail them and was planning on rescuing Hareta during the night; however, the Gym Leader, Roark, stepped in instead. After being rescued, Hareta subsequently challenged Roark to a battle and earned his Coal Badge.

Arriving in Floaroma Town, Mitsumi and Hareta meet another Pokémon Trainer, Jun, who immediately lunges for Mitsumi and ends up on the receiving end of her fist. Mitsumi then warns Hareta that he shouldn't go wandering off like he did in Jubilife because there's all kinds of freaks around, like this guy. Jun replies that calling him a creep is kinda harsh as he gets to his feet and explains that he is also searching for Dialga on Rowan's behalf. Mitsumi tries to shut him up by showing off Hareta's Coal Badge, only to find out that he also has one. He then challenges Hareta to a battle, but before they're able to go at it, Team Galactic strike at the Valley Windworks. After Team Galactic is dealt with by Hareta and Jun, Jun once again goes his own way.

After a few other adventures, including Hareta getting his second badge, Mitsumi and Hareta arrive the Contest Hall in Hearthome City, where they once again meet Jun. After competing in a Master Rank Super Contest, Mitsumi is told by Hareta that he came across a guy who claims he was an old friend of hers, despite the fact she doesn't know of any friends in Hearthome. After parting ways with Jun again, Mitsumi and Hareta continue onwards, as Hareta continues earning even more badges. Eventually, the pair arrive in Celestic Town where they come across Team Galactic as well as Mitsumi's "old friend", Cyrus. Mitsumi tells Hareta that he's no friend of hers and that he's Team Galactic's Boss. As he leaves with Hareta giving chase, Mitsumi stays behind to deal with Jupiter and Saturn. Jun and Professor Rowan soon turn up as backup; however, Jupiter and Saturn leave after being notified by Cyrus that their plans are moving to the next phase. Rowan tells Mitsumi and Jun that Team Galactic must be going to the three lakes where the legendary Pokémon live, and that the two of them must go there to stop them. As they leave, Mitsumi wonders if Hareta's still alive.

Some time later, Mitsumi and Jun arrive at Lake Acuity, where Mitsumi battles Jupiter with Jun standing on the sidelines, amazed by exactly how powerful she actually is. Jupiter seems to have lost; however, with the power of Uxie, she comes up with a plan. She attacks Mitsumi's mind by revealing her past as a member of Team Galactic to Jun and uses the distraction to use her Tangrowth to take him hostage. After consulting Cyrus, Jupiter is told to bring Mitsumi with her. Mitsumi initially refuses, but after learning that Cyrus has taken her Eevee hostage, she realizes she must comply with his demands and return to Team Galactic as their Ultimate Fighting Machine.

Some time later, when Hareta and the Gym Leaders storm Team Galactic HQ, she helps to defeat the Gym Leaders one by one before having to face off directly against Hareta. Hareta tries to rationalize why his friend would be working with the bad guys, asking if it was because of the time he peed on her bag while he was half asleep and forgot to tell her. She briefly gets mad at him, before returning to the cold Galactic exterior. As Mitsumi shows that she means business, Hareta realizes that he's really got to go at it full force to have a chance against her. As Hareta's Pokémon dwindle, Cyrus asks him how it is to be beaten down by his Ultimate Fighting Machine. Hareta refuses to accept Mitsumi as a "Machine" saying that "Mitsumi is Mitsumi!", Mitsumi is touched by this; however, before she can do anything, Cyrus reminds her of the Eevee they hold. As the battle continues, Mitsumi turns her Pokémon's attacks directly on Hareta, prompting his Regigigas to go for her. However, before it can strike, Hareta tells it not to hurt her because she's a friend. Cyrus comments on how good it is to have the Mitsumi of old back, the way she was before Rowan's corrupting influence causing her to leave the team.

As Hareta is beaten down once again with no resistance, Mitsumi tells him that this is a serious fight against Team Galactic's Ultimate Fighting Machine, with Hareta replying that machines don't cry, pointing out the tears running down her face. He tells her that the Mitsumi he knows is a kind person, always thinking of Pokémon and that nothing could ever make her into a heartless machine. Finally free of Team Galactic's influence, Mitsumi is able to finish her battle with Hareta with no regrets. After he wins with the "Piplup and Regigigas Hang Ten Surf", she entrusts him the task of defeating Cyrus once and for all. Jupiter prepares the building for self-destruction under Cyrus's orders, and Mitsumi asks her if they plan to safely release the Gym Leaders and her Eevee. Jupiter tells Mitsumi that as they're no longer of any use, they're free to go; however, Mitsumi herself must remain behind and die to protect Team Galactic's secrets. Mitsumi is fine with this, as she has complete faith that Hareta will be able to achieve what is necessary without her. However, thanks to Jun and his Dragonite, Mitsumi and Hareta are both rescued in the nick of time.

Hareta and Jun head to Mt. Coronet ahead of everyone else to stop Team Galactic summoning Dialga while Mitsumi and the Gym Leaders make more thorough preparations as backup. By the time she arrives, Cyrus's plans have gone horribly wrong as he has lost control of Dialga which subsequently began warring with the unexpected Palkia who has also appeared. Mitsumi and the Gym Leaders, working together with Hareta, Jun, Cynthia, Rowan and even Team Galactic, manage to help calm the two Pokémon, sending them back to from whence they came.

Eventually, the Pokémon League Tournament comes around, with Mitsumi's first match being against Champion Cynthia. As the battle heats up, the over excitable Hareta challenges Koya to a battle in the crowd. Taking a particular interest in this, she decides to forfeit. After a double take from Cynthia who asks why she's quitting, she comments that from the looks of things, it may be more interesting as a spectator than a competitor. Before Koya's match with Hareta, Mitsumi goes and eavesdrops on a phone conversation he has. She asks him afterward what that was all about; however, he refuses to tell her, warning her not to interfere with his work, or else, and goes off to compete in his match.

After the match is interrupted by an attack by Team Galactic, Mitsumi manages to get a Grunt to divulge information about their new leader, Charon, as well as the fact that they've planted a bomb in the stadium. Thanks to Hareta, the bomb is found and everything turns out fine.
