Battle Frontier (Not to be confused with the Japanese song of the same name) is the opening theme to the ninth season of the English-language Pokémon dub, Pokémon: Battle Frontier. It was used from AG146 to AG191.

The opening animation featured footage from the tenth Japanese opening, Spurt!.

The Lyrics
<ab>Pokémon!
It's a battle, win or lose
It's the friends you make, it's the road you choose
You've got the right stuff
So make your mind up
Find the courage inside of you
If you're strong you'll survive
And you'll keep your dream alive
It's the Battle Frontier
Pokémon!
Be the best you can be
And find your destiny
It's the master plan
The power's in your hand
Pokémon!
You've got the
Strength to win it
So stay in it
If you're smart you can take it all
If you're strong you'll survive
And you'll keep your dream alive
It's the Battle Frontier
It's the master plan

When May debuted in the anime, she did not like Pokémon at all and was only interested in becoming a Pokémon trainer so she could travel. She did not know much about battling and gave wrong attack names, and did not like the idea of taking on trainers as skilled as Gym Leaders. However, she found a niche for herself in the Pokémon world when she learned about Pokémon contests, and began focusing on Pokémon coordinating. She has three main rivals in contests: Drew, Jessie and Harley. At the end of the Advanced Generation series, she leaves to compete with Drew and Harley in Johto.

May has Contest Passes to compete in Hoenn, Kanto, and assumably now Johto as well.

May has an image song, I won't lose! ~May's theme~, performed by KAORI. It was first used as the background music in the episode Curbing the Crimson Tide and again in next episode, What I Did for Love.
Mew (Japanese: ミュウ Mew) is a Psychic type Pokémon. It is usually obtainable only by having it transferred to a player's cartridge at special Nintendo-sponsored events. In Pokémon Emerald, Faraway Island exists, allowing players to actually capture Mew, but access to this island requires an Old Sea Chart which is also only available through special events.

Mew's ability is Synchronize, which copies any status ailments the Pokémon might have over to its opponent.

Mew has been notorious since its discovery for its ability to learn every machine move, unique amongst all known Pokémon.

Mew does not evolve from or into any other Pokémon, and is the last Pokémon in the Kanto Pokédex.

Biology
Physiology
Mew is normally described as a pink cat-like creature. Mew's hair is so fine, it can only be seen under a microscope. It has a long, skinny tail. Mew has big hind legs, like a rabbit and short arms with three-fingered paws. Mew has triangle-shaped ears and baby-blue eyes. Mew is said to have the DNA of every single Pokémon.
Gender differences
Mew is a genderless Pokémon.
Special abilities
Mew's main abilities include turning invisible at will, creating force-fields of psychic energy and being able to transform into any one of the other nearly 500 species of Pokémon. Mew is capable of wielding every type of attack possible.

Behavior
Mew is an intelligent Pokémon and will only appear to someone with a pure heart. It also acts very childish, wanting everybody it trusts to play with it and laughing most of the time.

Habitat
Reports found on Burned Mansion found in Cinnabar Island in the Kanto region speak of expeditions of scientists, either independent or Team Rocket-run which have had sights of Mew in Guyana, South America, the place where its first sighting was reported. However, since Mew can either make itself invisible or transform itself into any other Pokémon, very few people have knowingly seen it, and it is considered a "mirage".

Diet
Main article: Pokémon food

Considering Mew's unique lifestyle as a floating psychic Pokémon, and that no terrestrial animal resembles it, there is not a known diet for Mew.

In the anime
Mew appeared in two Pokémon movies. In the first, Mewtwo Strikes Back, it engaged in a battle with its clone, Mewtwo. In the eighth movie, Lucario and the Mystery of Mew, Mew kidnapped Ash's Pikachu and Meowth. In the first movie, it was voiced by 山寺宏一 Kōichi Yamadera, while in the eighth, it was voiced by こおろぎさとみ Satomi Kōrogi.

Jirarudan's actions in The Power of One were apparently set in motion due to an Ancient Mew card; the card itself was actually shown in the movie.

A Mirage Mew appears in The Mastermind of Mirage Pokémon, and helps to frustrate the plans of Mirage Master.

Nando has a harp that is designed on a Mew.

In the manga
Pokémon Special
Mew debuted in its own round in the Red, Green & Blue chapter, A Glimpse of the Glow. Here, Red and Green see one in Pallet Town and try to catch it, but they fail. The phantom Pokémon was chased by Team Rocket.
It later appeared in the Fire Red Leaf Green saga, where it saved Red and the people of Vermilion City from the impending crash of the TR helicopter.

In the TCG
The first set that Mew appeared in was the Japanese Fossil set. This card was removed from the English set and was released as a black star promo card instead, this promo has a foil and a non-foil version, with each a different number (foil: 9, non-foil: 8). Mew has also made several more recent occurrences in trading card sets. It has been in Expedition Base Set, EX Legend Maker (1 normal, 1 Pokémon-ex), EX Holon Phantoms (1 normal, 1 Pokémon-ex), EX Dragon Frontiers (as a Pokémon*), POP4 (foil and non-foil) and POP5.

Mew has had many promo cards. In English, there are the 2 above-mentioned black star promo Mew, lilypad Mew (black star promo #47) and Southern Islands. There are several promo Mew cards in Japanese which never got translated, like shiny Mew (a CoroCoro promo), the Japanese players' promo Mew ex and a Pokéball promo Mew.

Mew also appears on some trainer cards, like the Japanese Lucky Stadium, the very rare Mew trophy card given to the winners of the summer challenge in Japan. But also on some regular Trainer cards a Mew can be seen, like Pokémon Fan Club (POP4) and Fieldworker.
Mew is also present in some current decks, for example, Mewtrick, the deck which won Worlds 2006, and also Destiny, a new but very popular deck.

Other appearances
Super Smash Bros. Melee
After unlocking every character, there is a 1 in 251 chance of Mew appearing from a Poké Ball. The thrower of the Poke Ball recieves 10,000 bonus points for the Mew Catcher bonus.
Game locations
Mew can be obtained in the Pokémon Red and Blue versions by using the Mew glitch. The Mew glitch also enable countless other normal and rarely-seen glitched Pokémon to be seen and captured, although some of them have been known to cause trouble to people's games.

Mew is otherwise obtainable only in Nintendo promotional events, historically through a direct trade. In Pokémon Emerald, it may be found in Faraway Island, a location that may be reached only with the promotion-only item Old Sea Map.

In Generation III onward, Mew does not obey when found in the wild by use of a cheating device.
Trivia
* Mew (then spelled ミュー, not ミュウ) was the first Pokémon trademark ever registered (granted on March 31, 1994, registration number 2636685 part 12), before even Pocket Monsters (ポケットモンスター), which was granted on December 26, 1997.
** ミュウ was registered on August 6, 1999, registration number 4302090.
* Mew is also the first Pokémon trademark ever applied for; the application was submitted on May 9, 1990, application number 平2-51989; before even Pocket Monsters, which was submitted September 11, 1995.
** ミュウ was submitted on June 17, 1997, application number 平9-128909.
* Mew was the only Pokémon of the first 151 to be left out of the original Pokérap.
* Mew was a little known secret when Pokémon Red and Green were first released in Japan. Even Nintendo was not initially aware that Satoshi Tajiri had programmed it into the game.
* The user-designed Neopet species known as the Shoyru was based on Mew with draconic aspects added.
* Lost scientific reports found in the burned mansion of Cinnabar Island explains that Mew gave birth. The scientists named the newborn "Mewtwo". This breaks up the basic reproduction method of Pokémon - eggs. However, Mew, as with most Legendary Pokémon, cannot produce eggs. Possibly, Mew was fertilized in vitro, and thus it could give birth. This may account for the fact that Nidorina and Nidoqueen are, too, incapable of producing eggs: They are fertilized by their male counterparts and reproduce in a mammal-like fashion.

* In Generation III, Mew was the only Kanto Pokémon not catchable in either FireRed or LeafGreen, as well as the only legendary Kanto Pokémon catchable in Emerald. It received an in-game location while Jirachi did not.
* Starting with Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen, a special flag must be set on Mew, otherwise it will not obey its trainer. This also goes for Deoxys.
* Mew is the only Genderless Pokémon able to learn Attract and Captivate; however, upon use, they will always fail.
*Mew was considered to be the creator of all Pokemon until Generation IV, when Arceus is
said in legend to be the "Original One" who shaped the universe with it's 1,000 arms.

Origin
Mew shares some traits with felines. It is also similar to an animal embryo. It is purported to be the first Pokémon from which all others are descended, in the same way that all animal embryos look identical at an early stage of development.

Name origin
Mew's name may refer to its cat-like appearance, with mew being the sound a kitten makes, the Japanese word unique (myō), or the English word mutant (myūtanto).

Aerodactyl first appeared in Attack of the Prehistoric Pokémon. It scared off the other Generation I fossil Pokémon that were chasing Ash and Team Rocket. It then kidnapped the young Trainer, who was resuced by his Charizard.

Fossils of Kabutops and Aerodactyl were revived by Annie and Oakley in Pokémon Heroes. They were sent to chase after Ash and Latias.

Putting the Air Back in Aerodactyl featured an Aerodactyl that was revived by Gary Oak. The Aerodactyl seemed to enjoy eating a pear like fruit that grew in the forests of an island. Team Rocket agents Butch and Cassidy wanted to steal this Aerodactyl in order to present it to Dr. Namba, but were stopped by Gary's Umbreon and Dodrio, and of course the Aerodactyl who sent the two Rockets flying with a Hyper Beam.

Another Aerodactyl appeared in Wild in the Streets, where it terrorized Oreburgh City after being revived from its fossil state.
In the Pokémon Special manga
Red obtains an Aerodactyl from a resurrected piece of Old Amber. He has since then used it extensively for aerial transport and combat.
Trivia
*Aerodactyl was originally going to use its Japanese name, "Ptera", as its English name.

*Ironically, until Generation IV, Aerodactyl could not learn Crunch, despite the fact that most of its Pokédex entries mentioned its saw-like teeth.

*The Pokédex entry for Aerodactyl in FireRed says that Aerodactyl is ressurrected from dinosaur genetic material. However, there are no non-avian dinosaurs that are known to have flown.
*In the games, Aerodactyl's cry was the same as Vileplume.
Origin
It appears to be based upon pterosaurs, prehistoric flying reptiles.
Name origin
Aerodactyl's name may be a pun, combining aero, Greek for air, with the similar sounding pterodactyl. Its Japanese name is simply a shortening of the word pterodactyl.
In the anime

In the manga

*In Pokemon Diamond and Pokemon Pearl, Aerodactyl's cry was the same as Vileplume.
Origin
It appears to be based upon pterosaurs, prehistoric flying reptiles.
Name origin
Aerodactyl's name may be a pun, combining aero, Greek for air, with the similar sounding pterodactyl. Its Japanese name is simply a shortening of the word pterodactyl.

AdvanceShipping (Japanese: サトハル, SatoHaru) is the belief that Ash Ketchum and May are a couple. This ship is very popular.

This ship is not unlike ApprenticeShipping as Ash is seen by AdvanceShippers as the tutor to May.

Evidence
There are many points in the anime that seem to support AdvanceShipping. Below is a list of some of the more famous examples during the two sagas in which Ash and May appear.

Hoenn Saga
* Get the Show on the Road
:After Ash destroys May's bicycle accidentally, she angrily goes to tell him off while he is resting in the Pokémon Center. As she quietly opens the door, she watches Ash and Pikachu resting contently together, and she forgives him without telling him. Later on, May figuratively talks Ash into letting her travel with him. Once he says she could come along, May strikes a pose by the camera and yells "YES!" to show her enthusiasm to the audience. This coupled with the previous scene where she secretly spies on him and forgives him for his kindness with Pikachu, shows that May perhaps be taking a liking toward him.

* A Ruin with a View
:Ash decides to become May's mentor for the very first time, teaching her how to capture and battle with Pokémon. The two have dinner together in a Pokémon Center, and when Ash wants to find out about the Petalburg Gym leader, May frantically pulls him by the arm to prevent him from finding out. It would appear that she was far more content with traveling with Ash alone before revisiting her family.

* Stairway to Devon
:When Ash and May discover that a Team Aqua intruder is in the building and Max could be in potential danger, she clasps her hands and asks Ash for reassurance and support. Once Ash comforts her, she is relieved. This is the first of many scenes where May continually looks toward Ash for support and reassurance, further expanding on the mentor/student dynamic.

* Brave the Wave
:On Dewford Island, May decides to strip into a bikini right on the beach. However, instead of just running down to the shore to take a swim, she purposely poses in her bikini in front of Ash and her brother and asks what they think. Ash appears to be embarrassed by the situation.

* Win, Lose or Drew!

:After witnessing May lose her first Pokémon Contest, Ash takes the blame for her loss. He says, "It’s my fault. I wish I’d spent more time with May, teaching her." Later, May is crying backstage as Ash tries unsuccessfully to cheer her up.

* All Torkoal, No Play!

:While May is clutching Torchic in her arms, the ground underneath her collapses and she falls into a chasm. Luckily, she grabs ahold of a branch that was sticking out of the wall. When May frantically calls for help, Ash steps up to rescue her. He tied a rope around his body as Max and Brock lower him down, where he grabs ahold of May's arm and reassures her that everything will be alright. Further expanding on the heroism, where May thanks Ash dearly for saving her life.

* Go Go Ludicolo

:When confronted by Max whether she wants Ash to win over her Dad, Norman of the Petalburg Gym, May gives flustered responses. While Max is quick to make up his mind and cheer for his father, May on the other hand sides with Ash. Max yells, "What, how can you want Ash to win over our Dad?" to which May blushes nervously and says, "Well I want Dad to win... but I don't want Ash to lose!"

:May's choice was made up from the beginning to cheer for Ash over her father, and each time Max confronts her about it, she blushes nervously and doesn't want to give him a clear answer.

* The Bicker The Better

:Considered to be the first episode where AdvanceShipping was made completely blatant to the audience, Ash and May are confronted by Oscar and Andi, a young couple who are obsessed with the idea of love and romance.

:When Oscar and Andi call Ash and May a "happy couple," the two of them quickly deny it and turn their backs to one another, crossing their arms. Ash says sarcastically, "That's a laugh!" and May adds, "Hardy har har!" Oscar and Andi do not stop there, and continue to call them a couple. Ash and May scream, "We're not a couple!" in unison, with the same body language, followed by, "And we're not happy either!" in the same tone.

:As the episode pours on, Ash and May continue to argue and bicker back and forth, presumably to get their minds off the idea of being called a couple by Oscar and Andi. After a team up battle against Jessie and James at the end, Ash and May sincerely forgive each other for their argument, and deeply apologize as they stare at each other while the sunset closes behind them.

* Grass Hysteria

:When May is lost in the forbidden land of the Grass Pokémon, Ash once again steps in to save her. After his Tarzan-esque entrance to save May from the fierce and threatening Grass Pokémon that were about to attack her, he grabs her by the hand and runs with her to clear a path to safety. Ash and May continue to hold hands as they are running away from the menacing Pokémon, a rare sight between them.

* Hokey Poké Balls

:This episode further brings up the parallelism between Ash and May, by having their two Bulbasaur meet each other. However, the two Bulbasaur show signs of liking one another, a ship that is called VineShipping. Throughout the episode, May makes several comments about how their Bulbasaur are such a great team, and how they are, "Two peas in a Poképod." Before Ash sends Bulbasaur back to Oak, it pats May's Bulbasaur on the head sweetly with its vine, saying goodbye. May's Bulbasaur is impressed as Ash's Bulbasaur is sent back. Vineshipping is one of the parallels that is used to push Advanceshipping, as canon characters such as Professor Oak and Brock have said in the past that Pokémon represent the feelings of their masters, and when two Pokémon fall in love, there is a good chance the trainers will too. While the Bulbasaur haven't fallen in love with each other yet, it is the first step in their parallel romance.

* Cruisin' for a Losin

:May is sulking on a bench outside the Contest hall because she lost her match. Ash comes alone to comfort her, cheering her up compassionately while patting her Bulbasaur on the head and sitting next to her on the bench. This is followed by a, "Thank you Ash," from May.

* The Scuffle of Legends

:When Ash is about to hop on top of Dragonite and go with Lance to save Pikachu from its bonding with the blue orb and Groudon, May approaches Ash and says, "Don't do anything crazy Ash," in a sweet and very concerned tone.

* Once in a Mawile

:In another love-themed episode, Ash is confused about the concept of love. May teases him and says, "Spoken like a maaaaaan," in the dub while she says, "And he doesn't get it," in the original raw. As the episode continues, Ash says, "No sense in going out of your way just to make somebody like you," in which May responds, "And he still acts like a man," in the dub while in the raw, "And he reeeaaaally doesn't get it." This is the second episode where May teases Ash about love.

* Let it Snow, Let it Snow, Let it Snorunt

:May holds onto Ash's hat while he is lost with Snorunt in a blizzard. May holds onto his hat during the entire search, frantically hoping to find him again, which is seen as a romantic gesture. Once they meet up again, she says, "I believe this is yours!" and kindly hands Ash back his hat.

* Date Expectations

:As May is about to be crushed by a Donphan using Rollout attack, Ash launches his body toward May and brings her to safety. The two fall down to the ground with his arm around her torso. This is the third time Ash has saved May from danger. In the middle of the episode, Ash and May are separated from the group. May does her expedition routine and thinks about the concept of being lost with Ash in the woods forever. This idea causes her to have little red blushes on her cheeks. During the last act of the episode, May misses her chance to catch the ferry to her final Contest. In despair, she starts to cry. Sensing her pain, Ash puts his hands on her shoulders and stares at her deeply in the eyes, giving her the courage to go on while he takes care of her little brother. This is the first time in the series that Ash had ever put his hands on a girl in such a serious and compassionate manner.

Battle Frontier Saga
* The Right Place and the Right Mime

:May decides that she wants to continue traveling with Ash after Hoenn ends, which compels her to travel from the Hoenn region on her own to meet up with Ash in Pallet Town. This was before she found out there were Contests in Kanto, so she decided that she wanted to be by Ash's side even if it meant not continuing her coordinator dream for the time being. Ash and May share a scene on the couch together, where Ash asks her if she wants to come along with him through Kanto. May of course agrees, while Delia is watching them converse, and blushes due to how close the two are.

:Meanwhile, May decides to leave her Bulbasaur with Ash's Bulbasaur at the lab, further following up with the concept of Vineshipping over 50 episodes ago. The two Bulbasaur again show signs of liking one another, which could be used to push Advanceshipping in the future.

* Fear Factor Phony!

:When May hears sounds of scary Ghost Pokémon, she frantically goes to Ash and tries to wake him up in his sleeping bag. She presses her hands desperately against his chest to wake him up, yet she didn't do the same for Brock, who could have come to her aid just as easily. A further example of May choosing Ash over anyone else when she is in fear or doubt.

* On Olden Pond

:As Ash is fishing, the line is being pulled into the water. To prevent him from going overboard, May quickly wraps her arms around his torso and presses her chest against his back. Ash puts on a flabbergasted expression as he feels May's chest pressed up against his back.

* Off the Unbeaten Path
:May falls off a rope bridge and clutches for her life. Once again she cries out for Ash several times, despite the fact that Brock is standing with Ash as well. Ash calls out May's name as he pulls her to safety, but not once does May give any gratitude toward Brock for saving her, only Ash. (Note that this does not occur in the English Language Version of the Episode.)In the english dub Ash calls out only May`s name but Max was there too.

* Harley Rides Again
: James says to Ash that they where helping his girl (May) in the contest.

Movies
* Jirachi Wishmaker

:Although never revealed some fans believe that May's wish had something to do with Ash.

* Destiny Deoxys

:Ash tries to pick a fight with Tory Lund. In order to stop him, May throws her body on top of Ash and tells him to please stop. She places her hands on his shoulders and desperately tries to convince him to calm down. Ash is surprised with her action, and quickly says, "Sure."

* Lucario and the Mystery of Mew

:Ash once again loses his cool and is mad at Lucario. May quickly rushes down into the lake where Ash is standing and clutches to his arm, trying to prevent him from getting himself in trouble. May holds onto him frantically until the situation is resolved. Afterward, May follows Ash around "mothering" him, telling him to get himself dry before he catches a cold.

*Pokémon Ranger and the Temple of the Sea

:As Ash and May go swimming with Manaphy, they continuously shoot glances at each other and smile. This is accompanied by a school of Luvdisc, Pokémon thought to symbolize love. When the Sea Temple was being flooded with water, Ash put May, Pikachu, and Manaphy in a capsule left behind by The Phantom, allowing them to survive should his plan to replace the crystal fail. May continued to pray for Ash's safety and was nearly driven to tears when she thought he wouldn’t make it back. Manaphy sent May's prayers to Ash, and with these thoughts spurring him on, Ash recovered from his near-drown state and replaced the crystal, saving the Sea Temple. After the Sea Temple is raised and May leaves the capsule, her happiness that the temple is saved is quickly replaced by sadness with the 'knowledge' that Ash didn't return. "It can't be..." she says. "No way..." Her joy returns as soon as Ash flies up out of the water and chases down Phantom and the abducted Manaphy.

Other
*Ash and May have very similar taste in Pokémon. Both owned a Bulbasaur and a Squirtle at one point. As well, they both have owned a fully evolved Bug/Flying Pokémon from their respective starting regions that were originally their first captured Pokémon (Butterfree and Beautifly), as well as a fully-evolved Fire starter Pokémon (Charizard and Blaziken).
*It can also be noted that Ash has a Snorlax as May has a Munchlax - the pre-evolved form of Snorlax.
*As noted above, there are hints to a romantic relationship between their Bulbasaur, called VineShipping, which is used to parallel AdvanceShipping.

Also, it is obvious that she has romantic feelings for Ash, known as AdvanceShipping. Her goal is to compete in Pokémon Contests and win ribbons, win the Grand Festival, and become a top coordinator. She travelled through Hoenn with Ash, Brock, and her little brother Max. She is the daughter of Norman and Caroline, and her starter Pokémon was a Torchic given to her by Professor Birch. She is voiced by KAORI in the original, by Veronica Taylor (4Kids dub) and Michelle Knotz (PUSA/TAJ dub) in the English-language dub and by Tatiane Keplemaier in the Brazilian dub.

May is a materialistic young girl who loves shopping and eating treats. She is generally very sweet and optimistic, though she shows a tougher side sometimes, such as when she argues with her annoying little brother. She loves cute Pokémon and flashy techniques, and sometimes takes an interest in helping other people with romantic problems. She makes Pokéblocks, including ones called "May's Purple Surprise" and "May's Pink Surprise".

The name Haruka contains haru, which means "spring". The name May may be a reference toward this, as May is a month in spring.
