* In VIZ Media's initial release of the Black & White, which was compiled directly from the magazine publications, this was released as part of Pokémon Black and White volume 6.
* In the Kurokawa translation from France, this round was released in Pokémon Black and White volume 3.

Plot
spoilers

A year ago, the Seven Sages crowned N as King of Team Plasma. During the coronation, N, accompanied by two young women, made his way towards Ghetsis to accept his crown. The other six sages acknowledged N as the son of Harmonia, and kneeled down one by one, as Ghetsis placed the crown on N's head before introducing him to his followers.

N's reminiscence is interrupted when Black yanks free from his grasp. Black demands to know who the green-haired man is and why he says such things about the Pokédex and Poké Balls. N calmly says that the Pokédex is a device intended to collect data on Pokémon, and for the sake of completing the Pokédex, more and more Pokémon would be confined in Poké Balls, which he believes is cruelty. As White hides behind the brick wall looking on, N introduces himself and urges Black to listen to his Pokémon's voices, before commanding Purrloin to attack. Musha tumbles backwards. Black, now realizing that all this "listen to your Pokémon" talk was about battling, orders Musha to use Hidden Power to knock Purrloin back. Black declares that he accepts N's challenge, but not what he said about the Pokédex and Poké Balls.

With that, he orders Musha to use Psychic, but the attack has no effect on Purrloin, who sends Musha crashing in the next instant. Black calls on White to get ready to battle. White stammers and tries to refuse, but Black insists, saying that it's the only way she can protect herself if he loses. Just then, Purrloin ambushes Gigi. White quickly picks up Gigi and scolds Purrloin for attacking it. An annoyed and impatient Black shouts to White that she should just command her Pokémon to use an attack, but before he can finish, White bursts into tears and admits that she's never battled before. The revelation leaves Black dumbfounded. He asks about the Sandile, Woobat and Lillipup next to White, who, still with tears in her eyes, responds that they are just BW Agency recruits, and so is Gigi. White claims that she's only responsible for their acting skills, and never wanted to be a Pokémon Trainer herself. Black is unable to comprehend what he just heard.

Suddenly, N commands his Tympole to use Echoed Voice. The attack knocks Tep against the brick wall. Black checks using his Pokédex. N, upon seeing this, sighs at Black's reliance on a device, and claims that Black cannot win the battle because he wastes time on information retrieval, whereas N, through listening to his own Pokémon as well as his opponents', knows the best time to use an attack. With that, he motions Gurdurr and Pidove to take on Brav, while Purrloin and Tympole face Tep. N claims that Brav and Tep, as well as the long-defeated Musha, are suffering because their Trainer cannot hear them. He cries that the longer Pokémon should stay with humans, the longer they remain miserable.

At that moment, Black tells N to shut up. He claims that every one of his Pokémon share the same ambition of winning the Pokémon League, and are connected to each other in this way. He calls out towards Tep, Brav and Musha, who all agree with him by nodding. Black also absent-mindedly calls out towards Galvantula, which he nicknames Tula, and to his surprise, Tula raises its foreleg in acknowledgment. Black wonders if it means Tula wants to join their team. Tula nods, and Black accepts by holding Tula's foreleg. Black tells N to see for himself.

Black also explains why the Pokédex was developed. He concludes by saying that he needs the Pokédex and Poké Balls to connect with Pokémon, because he doesn't have N's hearing capability. And with that, he tells Tep to demonstrate their connection with each other. Tep charges through Tympole's Water Gun to Tackle Tympole back towards N, who crashes against the brick wall. As Black rushes to check on Tep, who landed on its side, N states that he has heard the Tepig's voice, but didn't expect it to say what it just said. And with that, N stands up while carrying Tympole, motions his other Pokémon to follow, and starts to leave. Black tries to stop him, but N continues to walk away, musing about another equation to solve.

Once N is out of sight, Black remembers to give Oran Berries and Potions to his Pokémon. He also commends their efforts. White wonders if N may be connected to the troop of knights that they encountered earlier, and is worried that they have powerful people like that as proof that their preaching is valid. Black tells White not to worry, because N had landed next to Musha earlier, and his dreams were eaten. From the pink smoke coming out of Musha's nose that he saw, he envisioned N at peace with his own Pokémon in his own world, and deems N as not a bad person.

Meanwhile, N has just returned to his castle, wherever it is, along with the Pokémon that battled beside him.
A Biker who had just released his Ducklett, and a young woman who had just released her Whimsicott, are approached and interrogated by Black and White respectively. The Biker and young woman claim that releasing their Pokémon was the best decision for them and their Pokémon, before walking away. Black then asks White where the people that made the speech earlier are. White glances around and spots them in the residential area of Accumula. Black begins to run towards that area, declaring that he would stop those people from making any more speeches. White stops Black by grabbing his wrist, and says that those people were just stating their opinion. However, Black claims that the Ducklett and Whimsicott earlier were completely devastated by their Trainers' decision to release them, and that he cannot understand people who preach for the good of Pokémon yet make Pokémon sad.

Just then, White is distracted by her Xtransceiver ringing, allowing Black to break free of White's grasp and continue towards the area. Upon answering the call, White is requested by the film director for several Pokémon to star in an upcoming drama scene. White quickly asks for the director to call her back later, before hanging up the call and shouting towards Black, ordering him to come back. But Black is already too far away to hear her, so White heads over to the residential area herself. She sees Black lamenting the fact that he didn't catch up to the preachers. Black believes that the preachers must have spread their word far and wide by now, and to prove it, he takes out the Poké Ball of the Galvantula that he encountered earlier, and explains to White that it went to a human-filled convention and attacked without command, which is something that wild Pokémon wouldn't do. Therefore, it must have previously belonged to a Trainer who released it after hearing the preaching.

Suddenly, Gigi taps on White's Xtransceiver, and upon realization, White frantically tries to call the director again. Due to a lack of signal in the area, Black suggests returning to the place where she last received or made a call. White does so, but not before borrowing Tep due to the call being about a business deal. Black then presses the button on the Poké Ball he was holding in order to send Galvantula out. Black reveals to Galvantula that he was considering releasing it, and Galvantula responds by shaking its forehead and wiggling its front legs. Black, not appearing to understand Galvantula, then says that Galvantula would be abandoned twice. A voice out of nowhere suddenly says that Galvantula was talking to Black. Black tries to laugh off the nonsense being suggested, but the voice, now speaking right into Black's ear, pities Black for not being able to hear his Pokémon. Black immediately turns around, almost bumping into a brick wall, and demands the voice to show itself.

Meanwhile, White hangs up the Xtransceiver call that she promised to the director earlier, and sulks that she missed a chance to get the BW Agency's finances out of the red. She tries to blame it on the hyperactive Black, but reminds herself that she employed Black and therefore has to look after him. White starts becoming curious about Black, and while lost in thought, she notices Tep and Gigi having fun with each other again. White wonders if she could get Black to train Gigi up, and only then realizes that she said "Black" too many times. With a smile on her face, White starts returning to where Black is, but upon arrival, sees a violent clash. In the next second, a voice commands a Night Slash, resulting in Black and Musha being knocked against the brick wall.

A worried White rushes to check on Black, and asks what happened to him. Black grunts in anger that some voice accused him of not listening to Pokémon, and suddenly attacked him with a Purrloin. White asks if he could do the "head clamp" technique, but Black says it wouldn't work in this situation. The person who spoke out of nowhere earlier echoes this statement, and after revealing himself to be a green-haired man, claims that Black always keeps his Pokémon trapped in Poké Balls. He then orders Purrloin to attack Musha. Black quickly pulls White out of the way, and calls out Brav and Tep. The man responds by calling a Gurdurr, Pidove and Tympole forward. The man suddenly sees Black taking out his Pokédex, and grabs Black's wrist, claiming that the Pokédex forced many Pokémon to be trapped in Poké Balls.

Meanwhile, in a castle somewhere, three near identical-looking masked men kneel before Ghetsis, and upon Ghetsis asking where their King is, they state that he is battling someone in Accumula.

Plot
spoilers

The round begins at night time in Accumula Town with White watching a playback of the film scene that featured Tep and Gigi as minor characters. At the same time, Black is setting up a tent. White calls the film director to inform him of her feedback, and after hanging up the Xtransceiver call, tells Black the director's feedback about Tep and Gigi. Black finishes setting up the tent, and sees why they are camping: the BW Agency is losing money, and White is trying to cut cost. But Black fails to see why they still need to rent a hotel room for Tep and Gigi only. White explains that Gigi is an actress and deserves to be treated like one. In the middle of White's explanation of Gigi's schedule, Black scoffs that Gigi's precious career is wasting his and Tep's precious time, which causes White to become annoyed. She shows Black two invoices; one detailing the cost of the damaged filming equipment, and the other detailing the amount of money Tep earned from the filming session.

Black is horrified to see that the filming equipment costs 50 times more than the amount of money Tep earned, and questions if he was employed just to clear the debt for her. White says that the filming company cannot sue children for damage claims, but if Black is employed, the situation becomes a company to company matter. She did this to show courtesy to the people she works and partners with, which is a code of conduct in the business environment. White softens down and reminds Black that he helped her solve an initial crisis by lending Tep to her. After thanking Black and asking him and Tep to stay with her and Gigi for a while due to the positive feedback they received, White starts talking about her own ambitions in a heartfelt way, which attracts Musha towards her head but Black beckons Musha and Brav back and starts to go into the tent to sleep. Before closing the tent, Black addresses White as "Boss" and says that he will think about the offers given to Tep. White, glad to hear that, places one of the sponsored Xtransceivers by the tent and bids him goodnight.

Just then, the ground shakes. Black hears a scream, and peeks out of the tent to see White being chased around by something driving a lumber into the ground. Black sees that White has a bag full of Poké Balls, and tells White to take one of them out to battle, but White shakes her head. Black therefore has to call Brav out to pick White off the ground just as the lumber is about to strike her. While Brav takes White to safety, Black has Musha clamp on his head again. White realizes that he's doing the same thing as before, during the Galvantula incident, and Black explains why he does it. Soon, Black takes Musha off his head, and notices a rectangle of square shapes being carved on the grass. He postulates that the creature chasing White wasn't attacking her, but trying to build something. He spots the creature, which is a Timburr, and scolds it for starting construction work without notifying him first.

Two people in medieval knight attire accompanied by a group of Timburr then appear in front of Black and White, apologizing for the inconvenience before telling them to leave. Black asks if the two are Trainers of the Timburr, but they ignore that question, and show Black and White a construction permit, insisting that they leave. The next morning, Black and White return to where they had been, and see a big stage built over the grassland. Residents start gathering in front of the stage. Soon, many more medieval knights line up around the stage, some carrying flags, before a green-haired man walks onto the stage. He introduces himself as Ghetsis and delivers a speech to the residents of Accumula.

After the speech ends and Ghetsis walks off stage with the knights following him, the gathered residents disperse. Some dismiss his speech entirely as a load of nonsense, but a young boy in tears then asks his mother if it's okay to release his Petilil. An older man next to White suddenly drops to his knees, and White wonders what's wrong. The man, who has trained Pokémon for many years, feels a sense of guilt at the thought of holding Pokémon to do things against their will. Just as White tries to comfort him, Black sees another younger man bidding farewell to his Ferroseed. Black and White look around and see many others doing the same thing: releasing their Pokémon.

Plot
spoilers
At the Desert Resort, a group of miners unearth a mysterious object in the ground. One of the miners calls over to their boss, who asks them what had happened. The boss inspects the object and sees that it's actually a stone-like object. Since it appears to be a worthless ancient relic, the boss tells his men to do something with it and continue with their work. Suddenly, the boss feels a strange presence inside the stone and immediately picks it up to investigate it. Once he does, the man feels a powerful force rush through his body.

The round starts up with a commercial for the Xtransceiver featuring a group of Patrat finding a Xtransceiver for a woman. A man calls cut on the recording and another thanks the Patrat's manager for their good work. The manager, a young girl named White, tells the man that her Pokémon acting company, the BW Agency is on the job for roles like this. The director appears and yells at his assistant to go remove a person that is interrupting their filming. Suddenly, the person yells loudly to the skies about his intention of beating the Pokémon League. The assistant tries to get the young man to move from his spot but the boy refuses until he is done shouting is dreams to the skies.

As the young man continues yelling, the director thanks White for her ability to bring certain Pokémon whenever they are needed for filming. However, when the director thanks her for bring a male and female Tepig, White freezes up because she was told that she only needed to bring a single female Tepig. The young man from before comes running up to them and happily announces that the Pokémon League is starting only one year from now and decides to leave now that he is done shouting his pledge.

The young man tells his Pokémon, a Braviary named Brav, a Munna named Musha, and a Tepig named Tep to follow him. Just as they are leaving, Tep notices the female Tepig in White's Poké Ball and releases her from it. Tep and the female Tepig, Gigi, quickly befriend each other and start to play around. White instantly realizes that Tep is a male Tepig and quickly takes the chance to introduce herself to his Trainer.

After getting introduced to White, the young man introduces himself to her as Black. White immediately tries taking Black back to the shooting scene to ask him if he is available to help in their commercial filming but finds that several people have fainted upon arriving. The director tries blaming Black for the injured people and threatens to call the authorities on him. White, realizing that if Black gets arrested, so will his Tepig, tries to claim his innocence. Black tells White to mind her own business and that he will prove his own innocence by himself.

Black puts Musha on his head and the Dream Eater Pokémon begins chewing on his head, shocking White. Black's mind slowly becomes blank and he begins to piece together the clues. After figuring out the clues, Black removes Musha from his head and begins pointing out the evidence. Black uses Tep's flames to uncover an electrified piece of webbing and unearths the culprit, a wild Galvantula.

Using Tep, Black defeats the Galvantula by setting its webs on fire with an Ember attack. Despite Black saving the day, he accidentally set all the recording equipment on fire and burnt them to a crisp as well. White tells the director to put all the charges on the BW Agency and announces that she has hired Black as her new employee. Despite the boy's protesting, White demands that Black refer to her as "Boss" from now one. As they bicker, a young man with green hair is seen crying over Pokémon being used by people.

Plot
spoilers
The round starts on 1 with Black teaching Tep how to work together with his other Pokémon. Black explains that they can practice by fighting other Trainers; the only problem is that Black has never had a battle against a Trainer before. Determined to fight as many Trainers as he can on his journey, Black shouts a challenge request to anyone in the vicinity.

Just when it appears that no one else is in the area, Black is approached by Hiker Andy who accepts his challenge. Andy sends out his three Pokémon, Blitzle, Cottonee, and Roggenrola and challenges Black to the newly-created Triple Battle. Black sends out his three Pokémon, Tep, Brav, and Musha to battle as well.

After suffering several cleverly used attacks, Black has his Pokémon counterattack and notes that Andy used attacks that hit multiple opponents. Black commands Tep to use Flame Charge on the Grass Cottonee, since it would be super effective. The fire from Flame Charge proves too hot for Andy and he runs away to cool himself down with several water bottles. After returning to the battle, Andy is saddened to find his Pokémon already defeated.

Having lost yet another battle, Andy mutters to himself that he should retire, shocking Black. Andy reveals that he has been a Trainer for twenty years with the dream to conquer the Pokémon League, a dream he has never been able to achieve. Andy reveals that he is unable to stand heat and becomes unable to finish a battle because of it.

Angered, Black tells Andy that he should not give up on his dreams and he should consider of the dreams of his Pokémon as well. Andy assumes his Pokémon share his feelings and notes how his Cottonee has been staying away from his lately. Before coming up with a response, Black notes that it is still hot and turns around to see that the field has been set ablaze.

Black uses Brav and Musha to figure out a way to put out the fire. After figuring out the clues, Black has Brav carry a rock and drop it into the water, creating a giant splash of water. Black then has Andy command his Cottonee use Cotton Spore to absorb the water and has Brav blow the cotton all over the flames, putting them out.

With the fire put out, Black reveals that it was actually Andy's Cottonee that caused the fire by accidentally spreading the flames. Andy is initially furious with Cottonee until Black tells him that Cottonee was just trying to overcome its weakness to fire for its Trainer. After forgiving Cottonee, Andy queries Black about the technique that he used to figure out how to put out the fire. Black states that even though Musha eats his dream, it will never go away.

Black decides to let Andy join in his usual pledge and the two share a hearty laugh. After reflecting on what he learned today, Black and Andy go their separate ways. Black, with Tep, Brav, and Musha, goes off to challenge his first Gym. As the run towards their next destination, a young green-haired man watches him from above.

Plot
spoilers
The round starts with Bianca and Cheren battling with their new Pokémon, Snivy while taking Oshawott. The battle ends with Snivy winning and knocking Oshawott into Bianca's face. Angered, Bianca and Oshawott attack Cheren and Snivy until Professor Juniper comes in to tell them to stop.

Professor Juniper tells them that fixing the Pokédexes are taking longer than she expected and since Black does not have any means of communication, they cannot tell him about his only working Pokédex. Cheren assumes Black is researching the evolved form of Tepig and the scene cuts to a library where Black shouts his pledge to defeat the Elite Four until he is told to be quiet. Tepig tries to get Black's attention, but Black tells it that he is trying to find an appropriate nickname based on its evolved form. After Tepig runs away after hearing Black's statement, Black chases after it. The scene changes back to Professor Juniper's laboratory where Cheren explains that Black bases his Pokémon's nicknames on their evolved forms rather than their current form. He goes on to state that Black has been training to beat the Pokémon League for nine years, which causes a flashback to appear.

The flashback goes to nine years ago, where a five year old Black tells his friends, Cheren and Bianca, that he is going to be the best Pokémon Trainer ever. After doing some research, Black tells Cheren and Black how to become a Pokémon League champion. When Cheren points out that their parents won't let them go on a Pokémon journey, Black hears about the Pokédex from Cedric Juniper on the television and gets an idea to help him on his research as an excuse to go on a journey. He then goes on to mention that Black convinced his parents to move to Nuvema Town and tried his hardest to get the attention of Professor Juniper and her father.

The flashback ends and Professor Juniper assigns Cheren and Bianca the task of finding Black and informing him of the broken Pokédexes. As they prepare to find out where Black's next destination might be, an unknown figure approaches Bianca from behind.

The scene switches to Black finding Tepig hiding in a cave in a rock area. Black assumes that Tepig is sulking because he thinks that he doesn't like Tepig's current form and tries to talk to it. Tepig lets out a loud roar in response and startles a wild Pokémon, causing it to attack them. Black uses Musha to figure out the unseen attacker and subtly helps it find out its identity, a Woobat. Now able to see the Pokémon, Tepig easily defeats the Woobat and convinces Black to give it the nickname "Tep" based on its current form.

With his new teammate named, Black and Tep set out to beat the first Gym in Striaton City. Back at Nuvema Town, the mysterious figure that approached Bianca before is revealed to be her overbearing father who refuses to let his daughter go on a Pokémon journey. Bianca tries to fight her father off, while Cheren asks Professor Juniper when they will leave.

Plot
spoilers
The round opens up in Nuvema Town with a mailman and his Herdier picking up a package from Professor Juniper's lab. As he prepares to deliver the package, a figure suddenly approaches him asking for the package. Surprised, the mailman knocks the figure to the ground, revealing it to be a young man named Black. Black receives the package from the mailman and opens it to reveal three Pokémon and Pokédexes inside of it.

Due to the cold he had gotten from sitting in the rain last night, Black sneezes and drops the package and its contents onto the ground. The Pokémon are released from their Poké Balls and Tepig and Snivy begin fighting once more. Oshawott becomes angry again and it attacks the other two Pokémon. While Oshawott beats up Snivy, Tepig runs off with Black following it.

A shocked Professor Juniper arrives to find her lab's front door damaged and the two starter Pokémon injured and two Pokédexes soaking wet. After asking what is going on, Professor Juniper is approached by Black's childhood friends, Cheren and Bianca, who ask her what has happened. Bianca then gives Cheren a Snivy while taking Oshawott for herself.

Juniper sends her Minccino to clean up the mess while they follow Tepig tracks in the dirt. They eventually find Black trying to convince Tepig to get out of a tree because it's sulking after believing that it was ganged up in the previous fight. Black tells Tepig that he has decided to choose it as his Pokémon, convincing it to go to him until they are attacked by a wild Pokémon.

While Cheren and Bianca worry about Black, Professor Juniper tells them that she will forgive Black for his previous irresponsibility if he can save himself alone. Black, unable to find the unseen attacker, commands his Musha to bite down on his head. Professor Juniper is immediately horrified at this, but Cheren quickly explains that Black is simply having Musha eat his dreams, clearing his head enough to find his attacker.

After piecing the clues together, Black exposes his attacker, a wild Sewaddle and looks its information on the Pokédex. With Tepig's help, Black defeats the Sewaddle and officially takes it as his Pokémon. Having gained a new team member, Black decides to teach Tepig his daily routine, causing Cheren to immediately cover his ears. Black, Musha, and Brav loudly yell into the air their dream to beat the Pokémon League and they take off, leaving Professor Juniper, Cheren, and Bianca alone.

However, Cheren and Bianca announce that their Pokédexes are not working, causing Professor Juniper to realize that Black has the only working one.

Major events
Plot
spoilers
The round opens up to an evening at the Juniper Pokémon Lab in Nuvema Town. Professor Juniper is seen talking to someone on the phone about her plan to entrust three Pokémon to three upcoming Trainers on the next day. Before she goes to eat dinner, Professor Juniper decides to put her starter Pokémon, Snivy, Oshawott, and Tepig into their Poké Balls.

Before she can, Professor Juniper is interrupted by a phone call from her friend Fennel. Tepig notices some food on Professor Juniper's desk and burns one of the Berries to eat it. While it eats, Tepig accidentally splashes Berry Juice onto Snivy, angering it. Snivy attacks Tepig and the two get into a fight, worrying Oshawott in the process. Oshawott tries to stop the two from fighting but only gets itself hurt in the attempt.

Angered, Oshawott goes into a violent frenzy and begins wildly attacking the other two Pokémon, forcing them to defend themselves. Overhearing the commotion, Professor Juniper sees the mess the three Pokémon made and sends them back into their Poké Balls. While she cleans up the mess with her Minccino, Professor Juniper worries if Tepig, Oshawott, and Snivy can become friends with their Trainers.
