types
The Dark type (Japanese: あくタイプ Evil type) is one of the eighteen types. Notable Trainers that specialize in Dark-type Pokémon are Karen of the Johto Elite Four, Sidney of the Hoenn Elite Four, and Grimsley of the Unova Elite Four. Notably, the Dark type is the only type that has never had a Pokémon Gym specialize in it, although it is a recurrent type used by villainous teams, and is used in the Elite Four. Prior to changes in Generation IV all Dark-type moves were physical, but they may now also be special depending on the attack. Dark-type Pokémon were added in Generation II.
Characteristics
Defense
Dark-type Pokémon are notable for the fact that they don't have any strong stat trends other than Attack (which is in and of itself modified by a few powerful outliers and slightly ironic as Dark was a special type, not a physical type), but usually have relatively poor defenses, with the exception of Umbreon, Spiritomb, Bisharp, Drapion, Scrafty, Mandibuzz and Tyranitar. On the plus side, Dark types have an immunity to Psychic moves.

Additionally, prior to Generation VI, Pokémon that are both Dark-type and Ghost have no weaknesses (excluding Fighting moves used under immunity-negating conditions such as In-battle effect item or Scrappy), as the resistances of the Dark type cover the weaknesses of Ghost, and vice-versa. In Generation VI, the Fairy type was introduced, which is super effective against Dark and not resisted by Ghost, so these Pokémon now have a weakness to Fairy.

Meanwhile, a Psychic/Dark-type Pokémon, such as Inkay and Malamar, has no resistances while having a double weakness to Bug-type moves, a single weakness to Fairy-type moves and an immunity to Psychic.

Offense
Dark-type moves, when combating Psychic types, are especially useful due to their secondary effects; Crunch lowers Defense (an already low stat among Psychic types), Bite causes flinching, Feint Attack never misses, Night Slash has a high Damage modification ratio while Pursuit hits Pokémon as they switch for double damage. Many Dark-type moves also involve stealing or deception, such as moves like: Thief, which steals an opponent's held item; Snatch, which steals the beneficial effects of an opponent's moves; and Foul Play, which uses a number of the opponent's offensive modifiers, such as Attack, to calculate damage.

Even though the Dark type was considered a special type prior to Generation IV, the three Dark-type moves that are currently special (Dark Pulse, Snarl and Night Daze) were introduced after Generation III, meaning that all Dark-type moves that were once special moves are now all physical moves, which helps many Dark types since most of them are physical attackers. Similar to the Ghost-type, Dark-type attacks work very well with Fairy attacks, as only Mawile Klefki resist said combination.

Contest properties
When used in Contests, Dark-type moves typically are of the Smart category, but can also fall in any of the other four Contest categories.

Pokémon
As of Generation VI, there are 45 Dark-type Pokémon or 6.1% of all Pokémon (counting forms and Mega Evolutions that change typing as different Pokémon), making it the 6th rarest type.
Trivia
* Generation V introduced the most Dark-type Pokémon of any generation, with 16, and Generation VI introduced the fewest (minus Generation I) Dark-type Pokémon, with five.
* Generation IV introduced the most Dark-type moves of any generation, with 11, and Generation VI introduced the fewest (minus Generation I) Dark-type moves, with two.
** Neither of the moves introduced in Generation VI deal damage.
* In Generation II, the Dark type saw one retroactive type change in a move (Bite), but no change in a Pokémon. The opposite is true for the Steel type, which saw one retroactive type change in a Pokémon family (Magnemite and Magneton), but no change in a move.
* There has yet to be a Pokémon Gym that specializes in the Dark type.
** The Fairy-type, introduced in Generation VI, received its own gym before Dark-type, introduced in Generation II.
* Like Ghost, there are no Pokémon with a type combination doubly vulnerable to Dark, though in Generation VI the move Trick-or-Treat can create such a combination in-battle if it is used on a Psychic.
* Despite Dark-type moves being exclusively special before the physical/special split, every Dark-type move introduced before the split was made a physical move.
* Dark is the only type not represented by a Pokémon (retroactive or otherwise) in the Kanto regional Pokédex, not counting Mega Gyarados. Consequently, it is the only type absent from a regional Pokédex.
}}
Route 3 is a rugged mountain road located in northwest Kanto. Its western terminus is at Pewter City and its eastern terminus is at the western foot of Mt. Moon. The contour of the route is designed to be only a singular path from west to east, with ledges that lead down and curve around back to the western segment. In the Generation I and Generation III games, the player isn't allowed to set foot on Route 3 until Brock has been defeated, as a man will be blocking the pathway to the route.

Route description
For its western half, Route 3 is a split-level route. Heading east from Pewter City, the player encounters a small clearing with some natural obstacles that create a fork in the road, forcing travel north or south, of which the south path curves east and leads to a group of Rock Smash pits (Generation IV only) and a dead end. In order to progress, the player must turn north and then east along the northern half (which, in Generations I and III, is packed with Trainers). At any point, the player can jump the ledges located here to access a middle section of the route between the two ledges. Most of this middle area contains items, as well as another Trainer waiting for battle. By hopping a ledge again, the player is able to travel west toward the pits and then north back to the clearing at the start of the route.

East of the second section of the ledges, the route curves south and then east near a large patch of tall grass containing wild Pokémon, which takes up most of the area. This patch, which contains another Trainer, follows the route until it turns north ahead of a hill. (In Generation IV, the player can go through the grass to reach a ledge running along the southern edge of the route.) From this point, the route makes a backward "S" curve, turning east past the hilly terrain, south past another ledge that leads the route to a large clearing, east again, and finally north, passing a second patch of grass near the end, which has a fence around it as well as a signpost for directions. (In Generation IV, however, the eastern half of the route only goes south-east and does not bring the player north until the second patch of grass.)

The only obstacles along the remainder of the route are a few ledges on either side, which are easily bypassed as the player proceeds north towards the mysterious Mt. Moon cave and 4 beyond. Beside the entrance to the cave is a Pokémon Center, one of only two in Kanto that is not located in a populated area (the other one is on 10 at the north entrance to Rock Tunnel). In Generation III, Fly is able to return the player to this location instantly, but not in any other Generations. In the Pokémon Center, a man attempts to scam Trainers by selling them the laughably common Magikarp for relatively high prices.
Differences among generations
Generations I and III
The only changes along Route 3 between these two Generations are cosmetic, such as the reconstruction of the surrounding landscape. The barriers on either side of the route are removed in the Generation III remakes, while the large patch of tall grass in the center of the route becomes considerably smaller. Also the set of trees have been removed in Generation I and have been replaced by a rocky mountain setting. Other than this, most of the route remains the same.

Generation II
Many changes were made to Route 3 in Generation II. First, the route was shortened significantly. Also, the number of Trainers along the path was reduced to four. Similarly, the size of the grass patches were reduced by nearly 50%.

Traveling east from Pewter City, the route passes two barriers on either side of the road, and cuts to a clearing that creates a fork in the road, and allows travel north or south, with south curving around eastern and then leading to a dead end. In order to progress, Trainers must turn north after the route opens up and progress east along the northern half. For its western half, Route 3 is a split-level route, so at any point, Trainers can jump the ledges located south of this path, to access a middle section of the route between two ledges, and then again, so Trainer are able to travel west which curves north back to the clearing at the start of the route.

East of the second pair of ledges, the route curves south before returning east near a small patch of tall grass. The size of the tall grass has been reduced by about half. This patch follows the route until the path turns north ahead of a hill. From this point, the route makes a backward "S" curve, turning east past the hilly terrain, south past another ledge taking the route to a large clearing, east again which travels across the clearing, and, finally, to the north, passing the second patch of grass which has also been reduced in size, which has a fence as well as a signpost, which gives out directions.

Part of Route 4 has been combined with Route 3 so now only one route connects Pewter with Mt. Moon, however, the Pokémon Center is no longer there. There are no obstacles along the remainder of the route as it proceeds north towards Mt. Moon.

Generation IV
In Generation IV, the route is different from other generations, with some area changes, as well as major aesthetic features enhanced, including depth and sprite changes. The trees removed in Generation III return, and the east area of the route changes too. Hills, rocks, and Rock Smash are added near Mt. Moon, now part of this route like in Generation II. An additional area at the southwest end of the route allows players to change their Deoxys's current form by interacting with different meteorites. Also, a new hill is placed south of the tall grass.

For its western half, Route 3 is a split-level route. Heading east, Trainers must turn north after the route opens up and progress east along the northern half. The southern half of the route is only accessible by hopping down ledges that will lead Trainers into the paths of more rival Trainers. East of the second pair of ledges, the route curves south before returning east near a large patch of grass containing wild Pokémon. This patch follows the route until the path turns north ahead of a hill. From this point, the route makes a backward "S" curve, turning east, south, east and, finally, to the north, passing the second patch of grass on the route. There are no obstacles along the remainder of the route as it proceeds north towards Mt. Moon. Just before the entrance to the cave, there is a Pokémon Center.

Three unique items have also been scattered around the place, including a In-battle effect item, located near a Firebreather; a Valuable item, located near the meteors; and a Potion, hidden near the Pokémon Center. The number of Trainers along the path has been increased to eleven. The Pokémon Center at the entrance of Mt. Moon returns but the area around it was reduced significantly in size.

In the anime
Ash, Misty and Brock hiked along Route 3 in Clefairy and the Moon Stone. They were on their way to Mt. Moon, when they encountered a man being attacked by a flock of Zubat. Ash ordered Pikachu to fire a ThunderShock. The Zubat flew away, and the man, who was wearing a lab coat, squeezed Ash and thanked him profusely. He introduced himself as Seymour the scientist.

In the Pokémon Adventures manga
Red passed through Route 3 in Gyarados Splashes In! in the Red, Green & Blue, when a Gyarados belonging to Misty was out of control. With Misty's help, Red was able to capture Gyarados (even though that should not have been possible, since Misty already owned it). There was also a Pokémon Center where Red contacted Professor Oak.

Trivia
* When Bug Catcher Colton first approaches the player he says "I saw you in Viridian Forest.", though there is no Bug Catcher named Colton in Viridian Forest. He also says "You beat me again!" after defeat. This is also true in the Japanese versions, as there is no Bug Catcher named Hisashi in Viridian Forest. This error is a carryover from Generation I, where no Bug Catcher, nor any other Trainer class aside from Elite Four members and Gym Leaders, had specific names (making it presumable that one could encounter the same Trainer twice in different areas).
* Route 3 is the scene of a famous quote among Pokémon fans, where a Youngster exclaims, "Hi! I like shorts! They're comfy and easy to wear!" Further along in the route, another Youngster exclaims "Hey! You're not wearing shorts!"
* The music that plays in Route 3 is one of the most common location-specific themes in the games, playing in Routes 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 16, 17, 18, 19, 20, 21, and 22. It also plays in 24 and 25 in and on 2 in .
* Although there are 7 breakable rocks around the Pokémon Center in HeartGold and SoulSilver, there are no wild Pokémon to be found under them.
** As a result, Route 3 is the best place for collecting items found via Rock Smash.
*The Arboks that appear on Route 3 in HeartGold and SoulSilver are underleveled, as they appear at level 10, but evolve from Ekans at level 22.
}}

* The music that plays in Route 3 is one of the most common location-specific themes in the games, playing in Routes 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 16, 17, 18, 19, 20, 21, and 22. It also plays in 24 and 25 in and on 2 in .

I had figured this would happen, however, I would like for anyone to bear with me when it comes to this page, as I seemingly made it a 2:00 AM, when I couldn't sleep. I am planning on at least making a list of episodes that break the fourth wall, but If I do not find enough relevance I will stop fighting its deletion. So please bear with me LinkSlayerPKMN 18:42, 5 April 2008 (UTC)
#Keep. However I do agree that the first item is not really breaking the fourth wall as they are clearly in-game characters. By my definition, which may or may not be correct, breaking the fourth wall includes any incident in which the game universe acknowledges the outside world e.g. recognising that the game was created by developers or that the player needs to know how to use the menu. The menu only exists outside the game universe (again this is debatable) therefore any reference to it is breaking the fourth wall.--Beligaronia (talk) 20:28, 6 March 2010 (UTC)
In my Heartgold game the graphic designer says "I'm the graphic designer. I'm a skilled dot artist" instead of "I'm the graphic designer. I drew you". Pgj1997 16:16, 15 May 2011 (UTC)
Lip Flap reference?
I remember watching an episode of the dub where Team Rocket make a joke about the "lip flap" that the dubbers record the English dialogue over, but I forgot which episode it was. It was probably one of the Advanced Generation episodes. Anyone know which episode this is or if it's mentioned somewhere on here? --Nick102 01:35, 6 January 2012 (UTC)
In PokéPark 2: Wonders Beyond, Musharna says that she found an album that was full of names and pictures. Musharna is talking about the credits. Wouldn't that be considered breaking the fourth wall? :No, I don't think so. Games do this a lot. Such as tutorial levels saying, "Press 'A' to jump!" So yeah, no.
