Beautifly (Japanese: アゲハント Agehunt) was the second Pokémon acquired by May in her travels through Hoenn, and the first she ever caught in the wild. It was captured around the Route 104 area.

While watching a Rustboro City Pokémon Contest, May saw a Beautifly perform and decided that she wanted one. Her wish came true, and May caught a Wurmple in the episode All in a Day's Wurmple, as did Jessie. Several episodes later, in Which Wurmple's Which?, both Wurmples were temporarily switched, but were returned to their proper trainers by the episode's end. In the episode A Corphish Out of Water, May's Wurmple evolved into Silcoon while Jessie's evolved into Cascoon; Jessie believed hers was a Silcoon as well. Four episodes later, in Seeing is Believing, Jessie's Cascoon evolved into Dustox, while May's Silcoon evolved into Beautifly.

In the episode That's Just Swellow, May used Beautifly as her Pokémon in a PokéRinger competition. James, using Dustox, defeated Beautifly in the competition, but Dustox eventually succumbed to a last-minute defeat when Ash's Taillow evolved into a Swellow.

As a Wurmple, it was very greedy. It would gorge itself on food and then fall asleep, unlike Jessie's more sedate and well-behaved Wurmple. When it evolved to both its latter stages, however, it became more calm and mellow.

Combusken (Japanese: ワカシャモ Wakasyamo) was the first Pokémon acquired by May at the beginning of her travels in Hoenn. Its Japanese voice actress is 西村ちなみ Chinami Nishimura.

In Get the Show on the Road!, Combusken was given to May by Professor Birch in Littleroot Town when it was still a Torchic. She chose it as her starter Pokémon because she thought Treecko was ugly and scary, while the starter Mudkip had attacked her earlier. However, she seemed to like Torchic's cute appearance and sweet nature.

Early on in the journey, Torchic was very inexperienced and ditzy. It did not know how to battle, and it tended to wander around obliviously; it also tended to panic when in dangerous situations.

When May started to ignore Torchic in favor of doting on her new Beautifly, Torchic's personality began to change. It grew more determined to improve itself and recapture May's attention. Its competitive streak continued to grow as it lost most of its weak personality and confusion; this culminated in its evolution. Combusken had a period of being highly aggressive, but this seems to have passed and its personality seems to have evened out more now that it apparently feels that it no longer has to overcompensate. Torchic evolved during the episode "A Shroomish Skirmish".

Chimecho (Japanese: チリーン Chirean) was the second Pokémon caught by James of Team Rocket during his travels through Hoenn, after Cacnea. Its voice actress in Japanese is 吉原　ナツキ Natsuki Yoshiwara. It has not yet appeared in the English version.

Chimecho was caught by James in the episode Who's Flying Now?!. In the episode, Team Rocket followed Ash and his friends to the Fortree City Feather Carnival. James remarked that he did not care for carnivals, and when asked why, he told a story of how when he was younger, he would ride past carnivals in his parents' limo, unable to attend. One day as he rode by, he saw a Chimecho for sale at a carnival; he instantly wanted it. Later that night, he ran to the carnival to buy it, but he was too late; the carnival was already packing up. He was very disappointed, missing his chance at getting what he called his "first love."

Later in the festival, James came across the Magikarp Salesman selling strange-looking Chimecho. He was narrowly tricked into buying one, but it later turned out to be a Hoppip disguised as a Chimecho, and it flew away. Depressed by losing his chance again, James was instantly cheered up when a real Chimecho flew up to him, Jessie, and Meowth, using its Heal Bell technique on them. James asked Chimecho if it wanted to be his Pokémon, and it agreed, wrapping itself around his head in excitement.

James absolutely adores his Chimecho, and it is often seen out of its Poké Ball either near James or being held in his arms similar to the way that Misty held her Togepi. It has a place in the Team Rocket motto after Wobbuffet. James refuses to put Chimecho in any sort of danger; thus, it does not battle. In Pokémon Contest! Lilycove Tournament!, Jessie borrowed Chimecho to use in a Pokémon Contest, where she subsequently abused it by grabbing it by the tail and pitting it against May's Combusken, ultimately using Double Edge, causing Chimecho to faint from recoil. Throughout the contest, James was extremely worried about Chimecho and expressed much discontent over its suffering. Another time, James whispered to Chimecho that it should have flown away when Team Rocket was about to stage an attack.

Chimecho's personality is quite cheerful and upbeat, and it is apparent that it cares about James very much. Since it does not battle, it rarely interacts with any of Team Rocket's other Pokémon, except during the motto when it says its line after Meowth and Wobbuffet.
Pikachu (Japanese: ピカチュウ) was the first Pokémon obtained by Ash on his journey as a Pokémon trainer. Its universal voice actress is 大谷育江 Ikue Ohtani.

In the first episode of the Pokémon anime, Pokémon, I Choose You!, Ash woke up late the day he was supposed to go to Professor Oak's laboratory to obtain his first Pokémon. When he arrived at the lab, the three available starter Pokémon, Bulbasaur, Charmander, and Squirtle had already been taken by other trainers who arrived earlier. Seeing that Ash was disappointed, Professor Oak gave him Pikachu, which did not take a liking to its new trainer. It refused to go into a Poké Ball, and when Ash failed to catch a wild Pokémon, it laughed at him. However, by the end of the episode, Ash gained Pikachu's trust by protecting it from an attack by a flock of Spearow and rushing it to the Pokémon Center. Pikachu and Ash soon became inseparable. In Pikachu's Goodbye, Ash gave Pikachu his consent to remain in a forest filled with Pikachu, but Pikachu returned to Ash's side.

In general, Pikachu as a species are not particularly powerful, but Ash's Pikachu is an anomaly, overcoming odds in battle numerous times. In Showdown in Pewter City, it defeated Brock's Onix with an Electric attack when Onix was drenched in water, despite Onix being naturally resistant to electricity. In Electric Shock Showdown, Pikachu fought Lt. Surge's Raichu and lost. During a resulting hospital stay, it refused to become Raichu's equal by evolving via a Thunder Stone, and in the second battle, Pikachu overcame Raichu by using its superior speed. In Pokémon Emergency!, Meowth remarked that Pikachu's power "far exceeds its evolutionary level." It has helped Ash win innumerable battles and Gym and League matches.

Pikachu is extremely loyal to Ash, and while it is not always immediately trusting of strangers, it is generally friendly to humans and Pokémon alike. It acted as a guardian and big sibling to Misty's Togepi, and it has been seen mediating and even breaking up fights among other Pokémon, such as in Pikachu's Vacation. In Mewtwo Strikes Back, it, Meowth, and Meowth's clone were the only Pokémon not to participate in the giant battle; it stood motionless as its clone repeatedly slapped its face.

Since its first encounter with Team Rocket in Pokémon Emergency!, Pikachu has been pursued by the trio of Jessie, James, and Meowth.

As shown in a handful of episodes, the first being Showdown at Dark City, Pikachu has a fondness for ketchup, but it will eat and enjoy almost any other human or Pokémon food.

Pikachu is the primary mascot of the Pokémon franchise. It appears on nearly all merchandise and promotional material for the series.
Meowth (Japanese: ニャース Nyarth) is a member of Team Rocket in a trio with Jessie and James. He is voiced by 犬山イヌコ Inuko Inuyama in Japanese, and (previous voice actor) (EP002-EP0??) and Madeline Blaustein (EP0??-Present) in English.

When he was younger, Meowth lived on the streets in Hollywood. He was a member of a gang of street Meowth that was led by a Persian; this gang annoyed the humans in town, stealing food and causing trouble in general. One day, Meowth came across a female Meowth named Meowzie. Since she rejected him and preferred the company of her rich human mistress, Meowth attempted to make himself stand out from other Meowth and become more humanlike to make himself "worthy" of her. Thus, he painstakingly taught himself to speak human language and walk upright like a human. When he approached her after this transformation, she once again rejected him, calling him a freak. Heartbroken, Meowth remembered the first human word he learned to speak- "rocket" -and was inspired to join Team Rocket. In Go West, Young Meowth!, Meowth, Jessie, and James returned to Hollywood while following Ash, and Meowth was reunited with Meowzie, who had since been abandoned by her mistress and forced to join the gang of street Meowth. Meowth fought his former Persian leader to win Meowzie's love, and won, but Meowzie demonstrated that her loyalty was with Persian, and Meowth was once again heartbroken.

Because of the effort Meowth exerted while learning to speak and walk like a human, he has not learned the signature move of his species, Pay Day. In Meowth Rules!, Meowth was worshipped by an island of people who believed that he could bring them riches with Pay Day. When he was caught in a battle meant to induce Pay Day, Jessie and James had to secretly bail him out by throwing the last of their spare change and some of James's prized bottlecaps in order to appease the islanders.

There has been some debate as to whether or not Meowth was ever Giovanni's "Top Cat" (personal pet). He has stated himself as such in front of Giovanni with no objection (only to say that Persian was now in that position). Yet in The Origin of Love and Youth, he was shown to have been present at Team Rocket Headquarters for a short time, during which we see that Persian is already there. During this time, Meowth became a servant to Giovanni, bringing him food and drinks; however, he was unsuccessful at this task and was assigned to the team of Jessie and James. In light of this, it should be noted that The Origin of Love and Youth potentially contradicted other stated facts from previous episodes regarding Team Rocket's backstory.

Meowth has an ambitious, conniving, and idealistic personality. He has made it his life goal to please Giovanni (or "Boss," as he and his teammates call Giovanni), and will stop at nothing to capture or steal useful or rare Pokémon, especially Ash's Pikachu, which he has been pursuing since he encountered it in Pokémon Emergency!. Several times, Meowth and Pikachu have had to team up, such as in Bound for Trouble and Hoenn Alone when both were separated from their respective parties. His relationship with Jessie and James varies in quality. Meowth seems to have aspects of each of his teammates in him; in arguments, he can often be seen siding with either Jessie (usually denouncing James's incompetence) or James (usually complaining of Jessie's overdramatic and rash behavior). Despite these fights, the three remain very close and loyal friends.

Despite his seemingly outgoing nature, Meowth also has a contemplative inner side not seen as often. In one of his image songs, Meowth's Song, and in Mewtwo Strikes Back, he is shown to be a bit of a philosopher. In Mewtwo Strikes Back, he and his clone (in addition to Pikachu) were the only Pokémon not to participate in the giant battle, Meowth remarking that the originals and the clones shared the same air, moon, and planet, giving them common ground.

Meowth is an amorous cat, developing crushes on occasion (obviously not as much as Brock, but still a fair amount). Objects of his affections include Cassandra the (human) herbalist, the aforementioned Meowzie, Skitty, and another Skitty in Is Niece Azurill in Great Trouble?. He also has demonstrated aspirations of being a parentlike caretaker, coddling Togepi's egg before fighting for custody of it only to finally lose it to Misty.

He has also, since late Johto, had frequent fantasies about presenting Giovanni with various Pokémon. These fantasies often involve whatever creature it happens to be assisting Giovanni in his daily routine, the best of these fantasies were, Donphans for bowling, Bagons for coconut cracking, and a Skitty for making Giovanni happy when he is "oily in the morning"

These fantasies often involve whatever creature it happens to be assisting Giovanni in his daily routine, the best of these fantasies were:
-Stealing Donphans to use as Bowling Balls.
-Stealing a Bagon to use as a coconut cracker.
-Getting a Trapinch to use as a Nut-Cracker.
-Stealing an Elekid to use as a power source for his hair-dryer.
-Using a Skitty to make Giovanni happy when he is "oily in the morning".

Skitty (Japanese: エネコ Eneco) was the third Pokémon caught by May during her travels through Hoenn. It was caught on Route 111. Its voice actress in both English and Japanese is 林原めぐみ Megumi Hayashibara.

Skitty made its debut in I Feel Skitty. Torchic wandered off during a training session and met a sick Skitty who would not eat nor battle. Brock suggested they take it to a Pokémon Aromatherapy Center, where it was revealed that Skitty had wandered in the desert so long that it lost its sense of smell. Skitty recovered after it was sprayed with some medicine, and it recovered. Team Rocket then stole it because Jessie wanted it for herself. However, Meowth fell in love with Skitty and tried to help it escape. Eventually, May and Jessie had a Pokémon battle with their Beautifly and Dustox to decide who would get Skitty, and May proved victorious.

Skitty has a very cute and charming personality. It is always cheerful, and loves to play with mops, string, and its own tail. It can be a bit ditzy at times, though.

Apparently, Skitty in general are distantly related to Zangoose, as May's Skitty shares that species' dislike of Seviper, although this dislike is not as strong as that felt by a Zangoose.

When Skitty was first caught, it during a few episodes let itself out of its Pokeball in the same way that Psyduck and Wobbuffet did.
