== Synopsis ==
Our heroes are wandering through the forest without a compass, trying to find the path to [[Vermilion City]]. {{Ash}} and {{an|Misty}} are fighting, as usual, this time over who led them astray, while {{an|Brock}} is trying to get them to cool down.

They pause for a rest, and Ash sees an {{p|Oddish}} taking a drink. Misty sends her {{TP|Misty|Starmie}} to fight the Oddish so she can {{pkmn2|Caught|catch}} it. The Oddish is defeated, but Misty's [[Poké Ball]] is deflected by the appearance of a {{p|Bulbasaur}} before she can claim it. The Bulbasaur attacks and defeats the Starmie; Ash sends his {{AP|Butterfree}} after the Bulbasaur with a {{m|Sleep Powder}} attack, but the Bulbasaur blows the powder back at Butterfree. Both the Oddish and the Bulbasaur run off into the underbrush.

The trio attempt to cross a rope bridge, but a wind starts to rip the bridge apart. Brock falls into the river below, while Misty and Pikachu cling to Ash. Ash ultimately manages to pull them up, and the three make their way to the end of the bridge. They make their way down to water level and go looking for Brock. At once, Misty falls through a dead fall into a pit. Ash pulls her out, and they go on looking. As they walk along, Misty's toe catches a rope, and they find themselves suspended in a net. They're found by the Bulbasaur.

[[Team Rocket]] appears, looking for a village across the bridge.

Ash speculates that Brock has been washed to sea and shanghaied by pirates; moments later, Brock appears and cuts them down. Brock relates his experience in the river; he was rescued from the rapids by an "incredibly beautiful" girl. Brock takes them to the village and introduces them to the girl, [[Melanie]].

Ash and Misty notice the large number of Pokémon in the village and wonder if they belong to Melanie. Brock explains that this village is a place for abandoned or injured Pokémon to come to rest and relax. Melanie cares for them until they're better, then they leave. Melanie collects plants to use for medicine, though she says she's unqualified to be a Pokémon doctor. Misty teases Brock for falling in love with Melanie; he reacts a little violently, fearing Melanie might overhear.

Melanie explains that she set the traps they fell into to prevent [[Pokémon Trainer]]s from reaching the village. She is trying to protect the injured Pokémon from being captured while they are too ill to escape.

[[Jessie]], [[James]] and {{MTR}} try to cross the remains of the bridge, but it collapses under them, dumping them into the river.

Brock promised Melanie they wouldn't capture any of the Pokémon in the village; Misty asks if he sealed the promise with a kiss, and Brock thumps her hard on the top of her head. Misty agrees anyway, saying, "Only bad guys try to capture sick Pokémon." Ash worries if the traps are enough to keep robbers away, saying, "You'd have to be pretty stupid to fall into one of those holes." Cut to Team Rocket as Jessie says, "That's the third hole we've fallen into!" They get out only to immediately get caught in a net.

Brock and Ash are tending to a {{p|Staryu}}, while Misty apologizes to the Oddish. She and Ash begin quarreling, and the Bulbasaur tackles Misty, thinking Oddish was in danger. Melanie explains that Bulbasaur volunteered to protect the whole village. Bulbasaur tries to push Ash out of the village because it doesn't trust Pokémon Trainers. Ash wishes he had a Pokémon that brave.

Team Rocket appears from behind a cloud, standing on a balloon-lifted platform, reciting their mantra. They land in a clearing outside the village, and try to collect all the Pokémon in the village with a massive vacuum. Brock herds everyone into the cabin, but Oddish gets caught in the suction. Bulbasaur rescues Oddish with its {{m|Vine Whip}}, and Ash helps block the wind so it can carry Oddish to the cabin. The vacuum starts to actually pull the roof off the cabin, so Bulbasaur uses its vine whips to smack the hose around. Ash releases his {{AP|Pidgeotto}} with instructions to start a {{m|Gust}} attack. The resultant tornado tosses Team Rocket and their platform into the distance.

Melanie asks Ash to take the Bulbasaur with him; the village is too small for its bulb to grow. She says the Pokémon are staying in the village too long, because the Bulbasaur has done too good a job of protecting them. She feels Ash will be a good Trainer for Bulbasaur. Bulbasaur agrees to go with Ash, on condition that they battle first. Ash sends Pikachu, and the two trade rams. Bulbasaur uses its vine whips to toss Pikachu around, but Ash calls for a {{m|Thunderbolt}}, which shocks Bulbasaur into submission, allowing Ash to [[Ash's Bulbasaur|catch it]]. == Synopsis ==
Excited about winning his {{Badge|Boulder}}, {{Ash}} couldn't wait to get to [[Cerulean City]] to battle for his {{Badge|Cascade}}. For some reason, though, {{an|Misty}} was trying to avoid entering Cerulean and tried to convince them to go to [[Vermilion City]] but failed, she then left Ash and {{an|Brock}} as they entered the city.

When Ash and Brock entered the city, they saw a big crowd of people in a circle surrounding a building. When they got to the front they saw [[Officer Jenny]], and she accused Ash and Brock of being the criminals. When they proved their innocence, she let them go, and sent the rest of the crowd away. After that, they sat on a bench and Ash asked Brock for inside information on the [[Gym Leader]]. Brock telling him that as a Gym Leader, too, and he cannot give out that information. Then Brock said to him "I have some stuff I need to check out". They split up and Ash headed to the [[Cerulean Gym]] while Brock did his own thing.

When Ash got to the gym, he found three sisters performing underwater. Ash confronted the girls backstage, found out that they are the Gym Leaders and challenged them to a battle. The girls ({{ka|Lily}}, {{an|Daisy}} and [[Violet]]) explained that their Pokémon are too tired to battle, and offered Ash the badge without a battle. Ash was about to take it, when Misty appeared and challenges him.

It turned out that Misty is the youngest of [[Sensational Sisters]], but they called her "the runt". After Misty argues with her sisters, she challenged Ash to an official Cerulean Gym battle with rules of 2 on 2. Ash tried to send out {{AP|Pikachu}} but he refused to go into battle because he didn't want to hurt Misty or her Pokémon. So instead Ash sent out {{AP|Butterfree}} to battle Misty's {{p|Staryu}}. After a quick battle, Butterfree got knocked into the water causing it to lose the battle. After that Misty sent out {{TP|Misty|Starmie}} and Ash sent out {{AP|Pidgeotto}}. Pidgeotto uses {{m|Whirlwind}} on Starmie, but it jumps into the water and attacks Pidgeotto, Pidgeotto uses {{m|Gust}} causing Starmie to hit the wall. Just as Ash is about to win the battle [[Team Rocket]] interrupts and tried to steal all the Water Pokémon and the water from the Gym.

While Team Rocket was stealing all the Water Pokémon by using a vacuum machine, Pikachu got sucked in as well. He released a {{m|Thunderbolt}} causing the machine to explode, sending Team Rocket flying. After Team Rocket is gone, Daisy gave Ash the {{badge|Cascade}}. Misty tried to argue but her sisters convinced her that if Ash used Pikachu from the start, he would have beaten all her water Pokémon. Misty agreed with her sisters and claimed that when she comes back from her journey with Ash she would be a great Trainer. Brock then meets Ash outside of the gym and together they headed for Vermilion City

== Synopsis ==
The scene opens at [[Professor Oak]]'s {{TP|Professor Oak|laboratory}} as he sips tea. The phone rings as [[Ash's Krabby]] brings it to him. {{Ash}} is on the other line as he shows off his four [[Badge]]s. Professor Oak approves, but he mentions that {{Gary}} and the others all have five badges and have already passed through [[Celadon City]]. It makes Ash even more furious that Gary has {{pkmn2|caught}} thirty [[Pokémon]]. Oak mentions that Ash should catch more Pokémon in order to become a better {{pkmn|Trainer}}. He ends the call, leaving Ash upset.

{{an|Misty}} and {{AP|Pikachu}} are eating [[rice ball]]s as Misty notices Ash’s mood. Ash mentions how far behind he is as {{an|Brock}} points down the path to Celadon City. Misty mentions that Ash needs to get there his own way as Brock mentions quality over quantity. Pikachu notices a {{p|Mankey}} nearby as Ash checks his [[Pokédex]]. Mankey hops over Brock, wanting the rice ball. It takes it and climbs atop a rock, eating it. Ash decides to capture it by merely throwing a [[Poké Ball]] at it. Mankey throws the rice ball which the Poké Ball captures, and it then hops off, clearly angry. The Pokédex mentions that once it goes into {{m|Thrash}}, it is hard to stop. Mankey charges and everyone runs away. Brock tries to stop it by throwing it a rice ball, but it destroys it with its fist. == Synopsis ==
The scene opens at [[Professor Oak]]'s {{TP|Professor Oak|laboratory}} as he sips tea. The phone rings as [[Ash's Krabby]] brings it to him. {{Ash}} is on the other line as he shows off his four [[Badge]]s. Professor Oak approves, but he mentions that {{Gary}} and the others all have five badges and have already passed through [[Celadon City]]. It makes Ash even more furious that Gary has {{pkmn2|caught}} thirty [[Pokémon]]. Oak mentions that Ash should catch more Pokémon in order to become a better {{pkmn|Trainer}}. He ends the call, leaving Ash upset.

* In ''[[EP013|Mystery at the Lighthouse]]'', Professor Oak tells Ash that Gary has caught forty-five Pokémon. However, in this episode, Professor Oak tells Ash that Gary has caught thirty Pokémon. It should be noted that this was also present in the Japanese version.
* The writing on the Poké Ball in the advertisement is spelled "POCKEMON LEAG". This was not corrected in the dub, possibly as it is hard to read anyway. This misspelling of "Pokémon" as "Pockemon" is likely due to the fact that at the time of this episode's production (1997) there were no concrete plans for Pokémon's appearance in North America, and thus no standard romanization.
