'''Ninetales''' ([[List of Japanese Pokémon names|Japanese]]: '''キュウコン ''' ''Kyukon'') is a {{type2|Fire}} Pokémon.

It [[Evolution|evolve]]s from {{p|Vulpix}} by {{evostone|Fire Stone}}.

==Biology==
===Physiology===
This fox-like Pokémon is covered with a thick, luxurious white fur, as well as having nine tails, each of which is tipped with orange. They also have a fluffy crest atop their heads and a similar ruff around their necks. Ninetales have gleaming red eyes that are said to give them the power of mind control. They can also live up to one thousand years.
====Gender differences====
None.

====Special abilities====
Ninetales are based on the ''{{wp|kitsune}}'' of Japanese mythology, giving them abilities to wield {{t|Ghost}}-type attacks such as {{m|Confuse Ray}}. They are also very vengeful Pokémon and have been known to curse those who mistreat them. Ninetales are highly intelligent Pokémon that understand human speech. Many legends surround this Pokémon, one of which stating that Ninetales was born when 9 saints were united and reincarnated as this Pokémon.
Ninetales also always come with the ability {{a|Flash Fire}}.

===Behavior===
This Pokémon's extreme intelligence lends to what most consider {{type2|Psychic}} characteristics, though Ninetales has never officially been described as anything other than a {{type2|Fire}}. It also seems to hold grudges very easily and will curse humans and Pokémon alike if they touch one of its tails.

===Habitat===
[[Image:Grassland.gif|right|frame|[[List of Pokémon by habitat#Grassland Pokémon|Grassland Pokémon]]]]
Ninetales can be found in grassy plains or in mountainous areas with lots of shade, but they are very rare.

===Diet===

==In the anime==
[[Image:Ninetales anime.jpg|thumb|right|Ninetales in the anime]]Ninetales was first seen in ''[[EP058|Riddle Me This]]''. The [[Cinnabar Island]] [[Gym Leader]], [[Blaine]], used it against {{Ash}} in their first Gym battle.

Ninetales was one of the Pokémon that were captured and cloned by {{an|Mewtwo}} in ''[[Mewtwo Strikes Back]]''.

A Ninetales made a cameo appearance in ''[[EP103|Misty Meets Her Match]]''. This Ninetales belonged to [[Rudy]].

In ''[[EP169|Beauty and the Breeder]]'', a friend of [[Suzy]] named [[Zane]] had a Ninetales and used it in a [[Pokémon breeding]] contest.

In ''[[EP232|Just Waiting On A Friend]]'', a very old Ninetales befriended [[Brock]], who bore a resemblance to her long lost master. This Ninetales created all sorts of illusions, including one of [[Lokoko|a woman]] through which it spoke.

Ninetales also had a cameo during the opening credits of ''[[Lucario and the Mystery of Mew]]'', taking part in the festival honoring [[Sir Aaron]].

A Ninetales appeared in a flashback in ''[[DP020|Mutiny in the Bounty!]]'' as one of [[J]]'s captured Pokémon.

==In the manga==
In Pokémon Special, {{Special|Red}} and {{Special|Green}} both tried catching the same Ninetales. In the scuffle for its Poké Ball, Green managed to grab it first. [[Magma Admin Courtney]] uses a Ninetales as her main battler.

In [[Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Ginji's Rescue Team]], the curse that Ninetales can conjure is one of the main points of the plot.

==Game data==
===NPC appearances===
* [[Pokémon Mystery Dungeon]]: Ninetales cast a [[Curse of Ninetales|curse]] on a human that would turn it into a Pokémon, bringing on many natural disasters. The player is blamed for this and travels to the home of Ninetales at the top of [[Mt. Freeze]] to learn the truth.

==Trivia==
*Ninetales's name was originally spelled as "Nine Tales".
*Ninetales is a very intelligent Pokémon, and can understand human speech.
*Ninetales's name is misspelled as "Ninetails" in the [[Pokémon Trading Card Game (game)|Pokémon TCG Game]] for the [[Game Boy Color]].
*Ninetales can be seen as a parallel to {{p|Arcanine}}. Both of them are {{cat|Generation I Pokémon}} whose only evolutionary event utilizes a {{evostone|Fire Stone}} from their unevolved forms. Ninetales is exclusive to {{game|LeafGreen}} while Arcanine is to {{game|FireRed}}, Arcanine has a 75% chance of being male while Ninetales has a 75% of being female, and they are both in the {{egg3|Ground}}. Additionally, both can have {{a|Flash Fire}} as their ability.
*None of Ninetales's sprites had their tail tips colored differently until [[Generation IV]], though the Sugimori art has had it all the time.
*In Pokémon Platinum, Ninetales is the one of the few Pokémon not in the Sinnoh Dex, and not introduced in Generation IV to have a new sprite.

===Origin===
Ninetales, like {{p|Vulpix}}, are based on foxes. However, in Japan there are certain legends concerning foxes, or ''{{wp|kitsune}}'', as they are known there. One such legend which relates to Ninetales the most is how many-tailed foxes can breathe fire, create illusions, and have extremely long lifespans. After living a long time, these creatures take on spirit forms, which may be the reason why these two related Pokémon can learn {{type2|Ghost}} moves.

In particular, Ninetales is based on the 九尾の狐, the nine-tailed fox, which is a fox of advanced age whose fur has turned silver-gold. It is said to have the power of infinite vision.
====Name origin====
Its name simply refers to the nine tails it has. ''Kyūkon'' can be taken to mean 旧恨, old grudge, although it is worth noting that the first syllable<!-- first syllable, but first two morae--> spells out 九 ''kyū'', nine and ''kon'' from the Japanese onomatopoeia ''konkon'' - the sound that foxes make. Furthermore, a コンロ ''konro'' is a gas burner stove. Also, an alternate reading of the Japanese word for fox, 狐 ''kitsune'', is ''ko''.
The '''boss fantasy''' is a segment in the {{g|anime}} where Meowth thinks of practical uses for the Pokémon being focused on in the current episode. Through this, the Giovanni in Meowth's imagination rewards Team Rocket for their generosity, which gives Jessie and James the motivation to go through with their next plan. The segment debuted in ''[[EP205|The Kecleon Caper]]'' and became as regular as the [[Team Rocket motto|motto]] and blast off for a while during the Hoenn saga.

On rare occasions, the fantasy will not pan out to plan and Giovanni's unhappiness encourages the trio to do something else instead.
It features {{p|Latios}} and {{p|Latias}}.

It was released in Japan on July 13, 2002. Distributed on limited release by [[Miramax]], it opened in select American theaters on May 16, 2003. vhs video version was released on januaru 14th 2003.

==Film Synopsis==
{{spoilers}}
Two agents of [[Team Rocket]], {{mov|Annie}} and [[Oakley]], are sent by [[Giovanni]] to the water-based city of [[Altomare]] to retrieve the [[Soul Dew]], said to contain the spirit of a {{p|Latios}}, a Legendary Pokémon. The main reason for obtaining it is to power a special machine called the Defense Mechanism of Altomare, or D.M.A. for short. Meanwhile, [[Ash Ketchum]] and his companions, {{AP|Pikachu}}, [[Misty]], [[Brock]] and their Pokémon are visiting Altomare during their travels in the [[Johto]] [[region]]. Ash and Misty participate in a water chariot race through the city's canals, the Tour de Altomare. Ash, Misty and the champion [[Ross]] mostly lead the race, but the interference of two invisible Pokémon causes Ash to lose. Misty wins by an inch with her {{TP|Misty|Corsola}} against Ross' {{p|Wailmer}}. Ross congratulates Misty by giving her and the others a tour across the city on his gondola, telling them the legend of the city's protectors, Latios and {{p|Latias}}.

Team Rocket are also in the city but are there on vacation, but upon seeing Annie and Oakley, they decide to stalk them. The two spies are actually tracking down {{an|Latias}}, who can shapeshift into a human girl. The two trap her with their {{p|Espeon}} and {{p|Ariados}}, but the timing arrival of Ash and Pikachu allows Latias to escape with them, outrunning Annie and Oakley's Pokémon. Latias in return leads Ash to safety but she suddenly vanishes. Ash, Misty and Brock later visit the city's museum where they meet the curator, [[Lorenzo]] who explains the city's history, where an evil Pokémon Trainer tormented the civilians with his {{p|Aerodactyl}} and {{p|Kabutops}}. But the original Latios brought water to the city, drowning the fossil Pokémon, leaving only their remains which are implanted into the museum's floor. Lorenzo shows the D.M.A. to the trio, but Ash spies a girl who looks remarkable similar, if not identical, to Latias in human form. Ash and Pikachu pursue the girl across the city, losing her, and then running into Latias, who leads them to her home hidden in the depths of the city - a beautiful garden.

However, {{an|Latios}} and the other girl, [[Bianca]] are hostile towards the intruders, until Lorenzo appears. Lorenzo is revealed to be Bianca's grandfather and calms everyone down. Latias reveals herself to Ash as a Pokémon and they, Pikachu and Latios play together. Lorenzo and Bianca finish the story about Altomare's history, explaining that the original Latios died when he saved the city, and left behind Latios and Latias. The Soul Dew contains his soul and is actually in that very garden, kept in a hidden pool. Lorenzo explains if it is removed, it could be used to destroy the city. Ash and Pikachu leave with Bianca, but that night, Annie and Oakley invade the garden, capturing Latios and the Soul Dew. Lorenzo and Bianca follow them to the museum where Oakley plans to use the D.M.A. to destroy the city. Latias finds Ash and alerts him of the situation. Ash, Pikachu and Latias head to the museum, escaping the city-wide lockdown but are nearly killed by the revived fossil Pokémon. Upon arriving at the museum, they find the D.M.A. out of control and Latios being used as its source, but in immense pain. Misty and Brock show up later to lend a hand as Latias uses her psychic powers to free her brother and stop the machine. However, the Soul Dew explodes and causes all the water to leave the city.

Heading outside, the group discover that a giant tidal wave is heading for the city. Latios and Latias race to stop it and use their combined psychic abilities to destroy it. However, Latios gives his life to save the city and dies after a brief farewell with Latias. Latios' soul becomes the new Soul Dew and is placed back in the garden. The next day, Ash, Misty and Brock are departing Altomare and say farewell to Lorenzo. On their way out, they spot Bianca or Latias in human form waving to them. Ash meets her at the dock where she hands him a drawing of himself and Pikachu, and then shocks both him and his friends by kissing him. Misty and Brock are left puzzled on who actually kissed Ash, Latias or Bianca. The group leave the city, Ash and Pikachu spying what looks like two Latios and Latias flying overhead.

Annie and Oakley, meanwhile, are later freed from the D.M.A. after being trapped in its control seat and sent to prison where it appears they are still scheming. Team Rocket's role was limited in this film, as they are in the next several films.
==Trivia==
[[Image:LandL-code.jpg‎|thumb|right|Russian alphabet on Oakley's computer]]
* This movie uses the same intro from Pokémon 4Ever before the movie begins
* In a similarity to ''[[Pokémon 4Ever]]'', Jessie, James and Meowth land on a protruding object, and only when Wobbuffet comes out of its Poké Ball does it break and the four of them fall.
* Director [[Kunihiko Yuyama]] looked to [[wp:Venice|Venice, Italy]] for inspiration when designing Alto Mare.
* In a throwback to ''[[The Power of One]]'', Annie and Oakley are reading about [[Lawrence III]] during the credits of the movie.
* Images of {{p|Mewtwo}}, {{p|Lugia}}, {{p|Entei}}, and {{p|Celebi}} were hidden in the movie as a reference to the major Pokémon in the previous {{pkmn|movie}}s.
* This is the first movie to feature the death of a Pokémon.
* In the background of the cover there are a couple of gondolas in the water, the fact that nobody is in means that they must floating loosely around the city using the canals.
* This is the fourth [[Pokémon movie]] to air on Toon Disney. The first three were ''[[Jirachi: Wish Maker]]'', ''[[Destiny Deoxys]]'', and ''[[Pokémon 4Ever]]''.
* This is the first time that {{Ash}} had his belt taken off. When he and {{AP|Pikachu}} ride {{an|Latias}} to stop {{mov|Annie}} and [[Oakley]], [[Brock]] and [[Misty]] follow them on foot. They are trapped by a gate, where Misty suggests he should take his Pokémon, then she holds his belt up.
*This movie makes a slight display of the infamous Pokémon, {{p|Porygon}} at the beginning of the film like the past 4 movies.
*The characters appearing on the right side of Oakley's computer screen while she is deciphering the code on the stone plates in the Latios and Latias' garden are actually {{wp|Russian alphabet}}.
*This is the first movie where Jessie, James and Meowth have no influence on the main plot (in fact, they don't interact with any of the main characters throughout the film).
*Ash continues his habit of ramming a barrier of object of sorts, ramming into the barrier than shields Latios, Pikachu and Latias assisting.

==Errors==
* In the scene before the movie where Brock tells how Ash got Pikachu, Ash is pictured fully clothed - in the [[EP001|episode]] in question, Ash was still in his pajamas. Also, Pikachu is pictured like he and Ash already were friends. In the episode however, Pikachu hated Ash at first, but in the end they become friends.

==Dub edits==
[[Image:Pokemon Movie 5 - Mizu no Miyako no Mamori Gami Ratiasu to Ratiosu_0034.jpg|thumb|right|Scene that did not appear in the English dub]]
The entire backstory of the movie was changed in the dub.
A segment of approximately two minutes, which told the story of the origin of the Soul Dew in Alto Mare's ancient history, was cut. This cut also removed the reference to the fact that many Latios and Latias came and went to and from Alto Mare frequently, causing some confusion to dub watchers when two Latios and a Latias appeared in the credits.
Replacement backstory was added in the form of dialogue telling about an evil trainer who once attacked the people of the city with a Kabutops and Aerodactyl, until Latios brought water to the town, drowning the evil Pokémon and turning the streets to canals.

The dub also makes Annie and Oakley members of [[Team Rocket]], however in the original the two are working independently and no mention is made of a relationship between themselves and Team Rocket or [[Giovanni]].

Also, in the American DVD release of the movie, an intense blue tint was applied, making most of the colors much darker than in the original.

Latios does not keep its Japanese voice in the dubbed English version, and it sounds almost like Latias as a result.

The English dub of this episode mentions that an {{p|Aerodactyl}} and {{p|Kabutops}} drowned. Though it's possible that Aerodactyl (a {{2t|Rock|Flying}} type) drowned, it is highly unlikely it would have drown the Kabutops (a {{2t|Rock|Water}} type). However, the Kabutops could have simply been crushed with water pressure, or it may need air to breath like whales and other aquatic or amphibious mammalian or reptilian species. Being {{type2|Rock}} could also have been a deciding factor in the water sealing its alleged doom.

==In other languages==
* {{tt|Chinese|Hong Kong & Taiwan}}: '''{{tt|水都的守護神 拉帝亞斯和拉帝歐斯|Saviour of water town: Latias and Latios}}'''

[[image:253GSCEgg_dex.png|160px|right|thumb|Pokédex entry for Egg.]]
Egg data in Pokémon games usually have their own entry in the same chunk as other species' data. In Generation II, number 253 stored most of the data associated with the unhatched egg. For any Pokémon in a trainer's party, there are two values stored per Pokémon that indicate its species. The first value, found in the [[Pokémon data structure in the GBC|Pokémon's data structure]], decides how the stats grow and what sprite appears in battle. There is a second value that is typically exactly the same as the actual species value while it is in the [[party]] that nearly only decides what sprite appears in the party screen next to the Pokémon's name. However, when the Pokémon is still an unhatched egg, this second value will be 253 - signaling the game to treat it as an egg.
Oddly, it has a footprint with 253 in it.

[[image:253GSCEgg_hatch.png|frame|right|Well, ''that'' was anticlimactic.]]
Because of this, the egg sprite will appear next to the "Egg" Glitch Pokémon like a normal egg. But since the original structure value is ''also'' 253, the egg is forced to hatch into another egg instead of an actual intended species. This creates a never-ending hatching loop, where the egg will hatch into a new egg every 30,720 steps.

Glitch Egg's height is 5'7<nowiki>''</nowiki> and its weight is 486.3 lbs <ref>http://www.trsrockin.com/gs_mn.html</ref>
