Pokémon Online (commonly shortened to POL) is a fan-made MMORPG created with Clickteam's Multimedia Fusion. The project is handled by a wide variety of team members with the current leader being Haris. The MMORPG is planned to be based on the gameboy Pokémon games. Many of the forum members help the team out by posting suggestions, helping to create sprites and revamp older ones, mapping and more. Occasionally the team sometimes offers people to be hired and help work in a certain 'department'.

As of now version 0.6 was released to the project and is a prototype of what is to be expected. The servers have been recently closed while work on version 0.7 was made. However during the holidays of 2007 the servers were opened up and became a 'Christmas gift' of sorts for those who wanted to play. A hacker had than striked the servers and it is said that better security will be in the plans for version 0.7.

The website, forums and server sometimes have downtimes which can last up to a week sometimes although not very often, this is to be expected when a team is running a MMORPG and its website.

Currently, the Pokémon Online website had mysteriously vanished off the face of the internet. However, the POL Team has retained a complete up-to-date backup of all of the project's files. It has been stated by the POL Team that the project will be delayed due to this setback. The team plans to get a new site up and running this Summer, possibly earlier, bigger and stronger than ever. The team had set up a temporary website on deviantArt, as well as a temporary forum on zetaboards.
The Website
The Pokémon Online website is where announcements of the MMORPG's updates are posted, sometimes announcements simply being related to the project itself is also posted. The website also shows server status, beta screen shots of the project, important information about how the engine will work as shown in World Concepts and more.

The website also has a forum where many of the members are quite active even today. Not all of the announcements are posted on the website, half of it are for the forum members. Forum members are also given the privileges to post suggestions, show their spriting/mapping work and help the team in various ways.

The Host
POL's main server is hosted by one of its forum members, Chibimmy, of Coinoperatedboy.net.

Planned Features
Most of the planned features are listed in Pokémon Online's World Concepts, the page is highly detailed and informational. It is recommended that before someone suggests an idea, that he or she is to read the World Concepts page before making a suggestion. This is to avoid questions and suggestions that can simply be answered by reading the World Concepts.

Some of the noteable features that will be included are;

*All 493 Pokémon will be catchable, breedable and otherwise obtainable. Legendary Pokémon however, are slightly different. All legendary Pokémon (including any trios) can only be found after triggering an event, which will only happen once every year or so. This big change was probably made to keep legandary Pokémon being legendary.

*If you lost to an NPC or a wild Pokémon and had all of your Pokémon fainted, you wouldn't simply vanish to the last visited. Poké Center. Rather you will be prompted to choose to use a Revive or walk (or alternately use an Escape Rope) to a Poké Center. While this seems odd and that the team promised to try to keep as close to the Pokémon games as possible, simply vanishing to a Poké Center would seem albeit 'strange' and unrealistic. Several people have posed some potential problems with this change though, saying players can use it to cheat by slipping by NPCs without a battle. There will probably be a fix to this.

*The Orange Islands will be able to be accessed. You will be able to obtain all of its gym badges and visit nearly all of the islands it has to offer. The Orange Islands will not be one of the starting regions you can choose to start from, but rather have the same role as the Sevii Islands have.

*A second trade system similar to Pokémon Diamond and Pearl's Global Trade Station will be possible. It will be located on the second floor of every Poké Center. You'll be able to seek, offer and search a Pokémon. When posting an offer you'll be able to seek for the Pokémon you want in a lot more advanced way. You can seek by the Pokémon itself, its gender, status (Pokérus or shiny), from (in terms of region), level range, nature, characteristic, and even what moves it knows. For status and 'from location' seeking, you must either have seen a Pokémon from the region or have once obtained a shiny or a Pokémon that was infected by Pokérus.

When an offer has been posted, the system will auto-search for any matching Pokémon. When a match has been found the player has to wait for the original owner to accept the offer, decline or sometimes the system will cancel the offer if an error should arise. Unless a match cannot be found or if an offer is still in waiting to be accepted or decline, the 'offer' button will be replaced by 'pending'. The system will also be quite 'smart' and will not allow people to seek Pokémon that are incapable of learning certain moves or being at a certain level, examples are that you cannot search for a level 9 Mewtwo and cannot seek a Buizel that knows Ember.

The History
Pokémon Online was first originally being developed by an old Bulbagarden member named Konidias a.k.a MeowthBG. Bulbagarden was one of the first places to hear about MeowthBG's dream of a real working Pokémon MMORPG. Because Bulbagarden was - and still is - so popular, the first stages of Pokémon Online was able to get enough help and support and the project became an enigmatic dream.

The first stages of the project were however short lived, lasting only from 1999 to 2003. The sudden and unknown departure of MeowthBG may have been the main reason, although no one is quite sure the real reason and only theories exist why Pokémon Online stopped so soon. Whatever the reason was it caused quite a stir in the supporters of the project, which in turn only fueled the desire to continue the project on their own. Currently there seems to be no older version of Pokémon Online existing, and only copies of the newer projects exist today.

The project, now revived, is handled by a variety of team members. Some are part in the programming department, others in spriting department etc. The leader of the project is Haris.

Extras
The website also includes a Map Editor, available for download, in which you may make your own maps that resemble the ones in POL and the Game Boy games.
Jamming is a term used in Pokémon Contests. It refers to when an appeal can lower the appeal points of the other Pokémon in the contest by the number of black stars represented above the number of appeal points the move makes. Most of these moves are status moves. If not executed correctly, for example a move that affects all Pokémon after the user is played last, it only says that the move messed up, and it still gains appeal points and any other extra. On the other hand, if the move backfires on the user, it causes them to lose appeal points.

Cactus Jack: /* Trivia */

A Pokémon's cry is the sound it makes. In most of the franchise's interpretations, this is only its name and various phrases derived from its name. However, there are several instances of talking Pokémon.

In the games
When a Pokémon is released from its Poké Ball, it will call out its cry. It will also cry out when using certain moves, such as Growl and Hyper Voice. If the Pokémon faints or comes into battle when injured during Generation III and Generation IV, the cry will sound, but it will be altered slightly. Pokémon with evolutionary relations to each other (such as Charmander and Charmeleon) will have notably similar cries.

In the wild, cries of the Pokémon found in the player's current location can occasionally be heard in the Generation III Hoenn- and Kanto-based games. Also, if the player's first Pokémon in his or her party has the ability Swarm, then these cries will be more common than before.

In the anime
Most Pokémon will only say their names, and will communicate using those syllables. For example, Ash's Pikachu has been known to use the three syllables in the word "Pikachu" in various combinations to refer to several characters, including Ash (Pikapi), Misty (PiKachupi), Brock (PikaChu), Togepi (Pipipi), Team Rocket (Pipikachu), and "My name is Pikachu" (PikaPikachu).

Due to Pokémon being dubbed, sometimes, the original cry of a Pokémon is preserved in the anime, more often than not if the name is either similar or the same in Japanese and English. An example of this would be Charizard, which can, if listened to closely enough, be heard to cry out Lizardon instead. Likewise, all Onix can be heard to cry out Iwark.

Some Pokémon, such as Victreebel, cries are unrelated to their names at all. Per example, Victreebel makes a screeching sound.

Trivia
*Four pairs of Generation I Pokémon share the same cry, despite not being related by evolution.
**Charizard and Rhyhorn share the same cry.
**Caterpie and Goldeen share the same cry.
**Poliwag and Ditto share the same cry.
**Machop and Omanyte share the same cry.

*Pikachu is the only Pokémon to have its cry changed. In Pokémon Yellow, Pikachu's cry is actually provided by Ikue Ohtani. This is also the case if the starter Pikachu from Yellow is brought to battle in Pokémon Stadium or Pokémon Stadium 2.

*From Generation II onwards, possibly due to improved technology, very few Pokémon were released with cries similar to another; those that do have similar cries are usually related by evolution as they were in Generation I. As the generations continue to pass, the calls of new Pokémon seem much cleaner and more refined, while the cries of Pokémon released in previous generations sound more like the electronic beeps they are. In particular, the cries of new Pokémon in Generation IV are mostly recognizable digitized sounds, such as birds chirping for Starly or a xylophone being played for Kricketot.

*In Pokémon Stadium and Pokémon Stadium 2, the Pokémon are given similar, but not identical, cries to their Game Boy counterparts, so as to sound more advanced and realistic. However, this was not revisited for Pokémon Colosseum, Pokémon XD: Gale of Darkness, or Pokémon Battle Revolution, and the Pokémon's cries in those games are the same as they are in the handhelds.

*One of the cries of a glitched Pokémon in the first generation games sounds very similar to Crobat's cry. This shows that Game Freak may have already been considering an evolution of Golbat.
