[[File:Sinnoh.png|thumb|right|250px|In-game map of the Sinnoh region from [[Generation IV]]]]
The '''Sinnoh''' region (Japanese: '''シンオウ地方''' ''Shin'ō-chihō'') is an area in the [[Pokémon world]], comprising of the large mainland, the north-eastern island of the [[Battle Zone]], and numerous {{si|Pokémon League|smaller islands}} on both sides of the [[region]]. The Sinnoh region is currently the northern-most region known. The [[Kanto]] and the [[Johto]] regions are said to be south and southwest, while it is possible that the [[Almia]] region is connected to Sinnoh in the southwest.

This region is the setting of the [[Generation IV]] games {{game2|Diamond|Pearl|Platinum}}. Sinnoh has both new and traditional geographic features for the player to explore, including snowy and foggy routes. Most of its routes are on land. The region is divided by [[Mt. Coronet]], roughly comparable to how the continent that [[Kanto]] and [[Johto]] make up is essentially a contiguous region.

It is [[Pokémon world in relation to the real world|based on]] the geography of the Japanese island of {{wp|Hokkaido}} and southern part of the Russian island of {{wp|Kunashir}}. Most of the cities and towns in Sinnoh, as well as the region's design, draw from these real-world locations. The Japanese name of ''Shin'ō'' is possibly derived from the Sino-Japanese phrase 深奥, which can be translated to as "mysteries". The name can also be connected to 神 ''shin'', "god" or "deity", and 神話 ''shinwa'', "myth".

==Etymology and design concept==
{{main|Pokémon world in relation to the real world#Sinnoh}}
[[File:Pokemonworld.png|thumb|left|150px|The map of Japan showing the Sinnoh region as the island of {{wp|Hokkaido}}.]]
The name ''Sinnoh'' is derived from the region's Japanese name, ''Shin'ō-chihō''. The geography of the Sinnoh is based on the geography of the Japanese island of {{wp|Hokkaido}} and southern part of the Russian island of {{wp|Kunashir}}, which is claimed by the Japanese government. Part of {{wp|Sakhalin}} (Japanese: 樺太 ''Karafuto'') and {{wp|Kunashir Island}} (Japanese: 国後島 ''Kunashiri Island''), territories which are in dispute between {{wp|Russia}} and Japan, are also included. Sinnoh has been said to be an island like Hoenn, rather than a peninsula.

Most of all cities and towns in Sinnoh are positioned in the same way as the real cities and towns of the Japan while most of its design is based on it as well. [[Jubilife City]] is Sinnoh's biggest city, which is based on {{wp|Sapporo, Hokkaido|Sapporo City}}, Hokkaido's biggest city, while [[Veilstone City]] is based upon {{wp|Abashiri, Hokkaido|Abashiri City}}, a major port city.

Geographical features are similar as well, with the large mountain ranges of [[Mt. Coronet]] based from the {{wp|Ezo}} mountain chain, which is made up of the {{wp|Teshio Mountains}} ({{jwp|天塩山地}}), the {{wp|Kitami Mountains}} ({{jwp|北見山地}}), the {{wp|Ishikari Mountains}} ({{jwp|石狩山地}}), the {{wp|Yubari Mountains}} ({{jwp|夕張山地}}), and the {{wp|Hidaka Mountains}} ({{jwp|日高山脈}}). The three lakes of Sinnoh mimic {{wp|Lake Toya|Lake Tōya}}, {{wp|Lake Kussharo}} and Lake Kutcharo. The [[Sendoff Spring|fourth lake of Sinnoh]] is similar to {{wp|Lake Mashu|Lake Mashū}}, which is also known as a mysterious spot that has a dense layer of fog hiding the surface most of the time.

The numbering of the routes in the Pokémon world may also be a reference to Japan's own national route system, which goes from {{wp|Japan National Route 1|1}} to {{wp|Japan National Route 58|58}}, then skips directly to {{wp|Japan National Route 101|101}}, and then skips several more numbers. Routes in Sinnoh do not run concurrent to routes in Hokkaido; instead starting over after the set of routes in Hoenn.

==History==
[[File:Dragon hatch HGSS.png|thumb|right|The egg that released {{p|Arceus}} and all of life]]
According to several [[Sinnoh myths]], this region was the first of all the regions in the Pokémon world to have been created. In a void of nothingness, a single {{pkmn|egg}} came into being, which then hatched into {{p|Arceus}}, the first Pokémon to be in existence. Arceus created {{p|Dialga}}, {{p|Palkia}}, and possibly {{p|Giratina}}, and Arceus then gave Dialga and Palkia the abilities to control time and space, respectively. Giratina was banished to [[Distortion World|another dimension]] for its violent behavior. Then, during the very early formation of the world, Arceus created {{p|Azelf}}, {{p|Uxie}}, and {{p|Mesprit}} to create willpower, knowledge, and emotion respectively, things that are in all modern humans and Pokémon. They dove to the bottom of present-day [[Lake Valor]], [[Lake Acuity]], and [[Lake Verity]], an act which earned them the name "the lake trio". At that point, Arceus created the Sinnoh region and [[Mt. Coronet]] divided the region into two sections. During this violent procedure, [[Stark Mountain]] was created and {{p|Heatran}} was formed in lava. Arceus finally created the Adamant, Lustrous and Griseous Orbs before falling into a never-ending sleep at the [[Hall of Origin]].

Around this time, {{p|Mew}} was thought to have came into being by itself, containing the DNA of every Pokémon to exist and exist in the future. Human habitation of Sinnoh is estimated to have begun when Sinnoh was created, as said in [[Sinnoh myths|myth]]. It is stated that Pokémon and humans led separate lives, but always helped each other. They supplied each other with goods, and supported each other. A Pokémon proposed to the others to always be ready to help humans, and that Pokémon be ready to appear before humans always. Thus, to this day, Pokémon appear to humans if they venture into [[tall grass]].
[[File:Dialga-Palkia-Giratina.jpg|thumb|left|250px|Palkia, Giratina and Dialga on Spear Pillar.]]
Later on came the events of [[Floaroma Town]]. According to the townspeople, Floaroma Town was once a barren and desolate hill. People started planting flowers around it to cheer up the place, but nothing would grow. Then, someone expressed thanks for a blessing of nature, and the whole hill burst into bloom. It is theorized that {{p|Shaymin}} was the cause of the sudden burst of flowers, given it being the Gratitude Pokémon, and its ability to "instantly transform ruined land into a lush field of flowers," according to its [[Pokédex]] entry.

In contemporary history, {{ga|Lucas}}/{{ga|Dawn}} and {{ga|Barry}} leave [[Twinleaf Town]] in an attempt to see a Pokémon, like the recently reported [[red Gyarados]], in the nearby [[Lake Verity]]. After receiving one of [[Professor Rowan]]'s Pokémon to call their own, their journey begins in earnest, and both Lucas/Dawn and Barry challenge the Sinnoh region's eight gyms to gain the badges necessary to challenge the {{si|Pokémon League}}. Along the way, however, Lucas/Dawn is brought into many conflicts with [[Team Galactic]], whose leader, [[Cyrus]], wishes to remake the entire universe in his image with the powers of the [[legendary Pokémon]] {{p|Dialga}} and {{p|Palkia}}. Defeating the team and calming {{p|Dialga}}/{{p|Palkia}} (or {{p|Giratina}} in Platinum canon), Lucas/Dawn challenges Sinnoh's Elite Four and Champion, [[Cynthia]], and becomes Champion him/herself. In {{game|Platinum}}, Cyrus accidentally opened a portal to the [[Distortion World]] above [[Mt. Coronet]] while trying to create a new world for himself. The portal atop Mt. Coronet was able to be closed, but a passageway to this strange dimension still remains on the [[Turnback Cave|depths]] of [[Sendoff Spring]].

==Cities, routes, and other locations==
[[File:Sinnoh Region.png|thumb|right|300px|A detailed version of the in-game map of the Sinnoh region from [[Generation IV]] games.]]
Sinnoh has fourteen [[List of cities and towns by name|cities and towns]], as well as three "areas", and a {{si|Pokémon League}}. These sites act as settlements for people to live and work in a functioning society. The [[Fight Area]], the [[Survival Area]] and the [[Resort Area]] all act as towns, however, they appear to be more of a tourist destination and are not considered cities or towns. These three "areas" are located off Sinnoh's mainland and on the [[Battle Zone]], which is considered a sub-region of Sinnoh and is implied by some living on the island as a different region altogether, not unlike how the [[Sevii Islands]] are considered a separate region from [[Kanto]] and [[Johto]]. Thus, Sinnoh has a total of eighteen settlements all over Sinnoh, the largest amount of sites in the [[Pokémon world]] so far.

The Sinnoh region has 30 different [[routes]], which are passages permitting trainers to travel from one location to the next with relative ease. Much like [[Hoenn]] before it, Sinnoh's routes are numbered so that they don't follow sequence directly from previously-known regions' routes. Routes in Sinnoh are numbered from {{rtn|201|Sinnoh}} to {{rtn|230|Sinnoh}}. Compared to previous generations, there aren't many sea routes; there are many land routes and mountains. The idea of routes with differing [[weather conditions]] was also brought ahead from [[Generation III]]. For the first time ever in a Pokémon game, some of Sinnoh's routes have snow covering them. Another quirk about the routes in Sinnoh is that some of them do not go directly east/west or north/south, but actually turn before reaching their destination, most notably {{rt|212|Sinnoh}} and {{rt|210|Sinnoh}}, which both have two limbs of equal length. While Hoenn's {{rt|114|Hoenn}} did this on the [[Game Boy Advance]], it was not to this scale, so one may presume that the GBA was limited in this sense.

Although it has few [[sea route]]s, Sinnoh is known to be rich in water, and has three lakes at the northernmost ([[Lake Acuity|Acuity]]), easternmost ([[Lake Valor|Valor]]), and westernmost ([[Lake Verity|Verity]]) ends of the main continent. These are home to the members of [[lake guardians|one of Sinnoh's legendary trios]]. Near Lake Valor, as well, there is a hidden fourth lake, [[Sendoff Spring]], which houses [[Turnback Cave]]. Some other significant locations that Sinnoh offers include [[Mt. Coronet]], the highest mountain in the Sinnoh region and part of a long mountain range that divides the region in half; [[Eterna Forest]], a large and mysterious forest; and the [[Great Marsh]], a popular habitat for Pokémon and a safari zone for many Trainers.

===Demographics===
The Sinnoh region's towns, cities and areas, has a total population of 704 in {{2v2|Diamond|Pearl}}.
===Landmarks===
[[File:Mt. Coronet.png|left|thumb|200px|[[Mt. Coronet|Mt. Coronet range]], which divides the region into two parts]]
Sinnoh is home to many unique landmarks and areas of interest. These come in a range of tourist attractions such as the luxurious [[Hotel Grand Lake]] and the exciting [[Pal Park]], to many natural phenomena such as the four deep, blue lakes and the vast, dense [[Eterna Forest]]. But, the central landmark of the Sinnoh region is Mt. Coronet. Standing in the middle of Sinnoh and extending from the northern wilderness to the southern tip of the region, Mt. Coronet splits Sinnoh into two halves. It is truly best defined as a mountain range, with the highest peak shrouded in legend, perhaps being the highest mountain in the entire Pokémon world. Spear Pillar is situated at the highest point, an ancient shrine to Pokémon which is in ruins. Several of its pillars are still standing, all pointing skyward. The legend of the [[creation trio]] is deeply connected with the mountain, as is the plot of Team Galactic. A stained glass window in the Foreign Building in Hearthome City depicts the mountain with a bright shine, representing Spear Pillar and possibly depicting the creation of {{p|Dialga}}, {{p|Palkia}}, and {{p|Giratina}}. Its place in Sinnoh has caused variation in the species of {{p|Shellos}} and {{p|Gastrodon}}, which have different coloration depending on the side of Sinnoh they are native to.

To the very north of the region in the [[Battle Zone]], there is another mountain range, [[Stark Mountain]] which consists of an active volcano. The volcano rains ash down upon some parts of the Battle Zone. Outside the cavern, is a rugged, seemingly indestructible rock mountain that is thickly blanketed by the volcanic ash it spews. While, inside the mountain, fissures in spilled and hardened lava form enormous caverns. Another important landmark of Sinnoh is the [[Eterna Forest]]. Eterna Forest has a reputation for being a mysterious place, from the abandoned [[Old Chateau]] to the strange [[Moss Rock]]. Eterna Forest is a long and complex structure of trees that make it a natural maze, of where a lot of people get lost. Eterna Forest has apparently been the location to numerous sightings of [[Team Galactic]], for many unknown reasons. Eterna Forest is home to many Bug- and Grass-type Pokémon, and is currently the only known place in the Pokémon world to find and catch {{p|Buneary}}.

Another major landmark is the Great Marsh. The Great Marsh is a giant wetland that is subject to frequent or continuous flood. It houses many different kinds of Pokémon, some of which are unique to this environment. [[Pastoria City]] was settled to protect the area. It has grown naturally over the years and there is now a lookout that affords views of the Great Marsh. An almost more sacred area is the trinity of lakes mysteriously situated throughout the region to form the corners of a triangle. [[Lake Verity]], [[Lake Valor]], and [[Lake Acuity]] are tied to the myth of the creation of the Pokémon world, specifically the creation of spirit. The lakes are said to be inhabited by the three legendary pixies {{p|Uxie}}, {{p|Mesprit}}, and {{p|Azelf}}. They are meant to represent knowledge, emotion, and willpower, respectively.
[[File:Sinnoh Underground Map.gif|thumb|right|[[The Underground]]; a series of tunnels dug out below Sinnoh|300px]]
The [[The Underground|Underground]] is a famous attraction to the Sinnoh region, because of the fact that it is not located above the surface of the region, but below in a series of tunnels dug out by people. There are six independent sections of the labyrinth, each accessible from different places in Sinnoh. In terms of vendors and mining treasures, the areas are equivalent. One of the main attractions of the Underground is the mining game in which rare items can be found.

The Sinnoh region is the only area where an extreme natural phenomena has occurred; the gateway to another universe has opened due to the actions of {{p|Giratina}}. At first, Giratina uses [[Turnback Cave]], a cave located in the depths of the mysterious and secret fourth lake of Sinnoh, [[Sendoff Spring]] as a portal to the [[Distortion World]]. It is said that Turnback Cave was a weak point between dimensions, and the ability to travel across to the Distortion World would be possible. This mysterious place disobeys the normal laws of physics: time does not flow and spatial relations are irregular, allowing the player to walk and surf on walls in any direction. Trees and rocks can simply grow out of the ground, and then disappear. The only Pokémon known to inhabit the Distortion World is Giratina.

==Geography==
===Environment===
[[File:Sinnoh Anime.png|thumb|right|290px|Oblique view of the Sinnoh region from above.]]
Sinnoh features a broad range of new and classic environments for the player to explore including, for the first time in a Pokémon RPG, snowy routes. Its terrain is varied: some parts of the region are dry and mountainous; others are wet and swampy. The region is rich in water.

Due to its large size, the main region of Sinnoh can be broken into two sub-regions divided by [[Mt. Coronet]], roughly comparable to how the continent that [[Kanto]] and [[Johto]] make up is essentially a contiguous region. Due to this, {{p|Shellos}} and {{p|Gastrodon}} have developed an instance of regional {{wp|speciation}}, with members of the species found on the eastern side being blue-colored and members on the western side being pink-colored.

The western half of Sinnoh features a variety of landscapes. Its coasts are notably more rocky than the eastern half, however, the land is far more fertile, and the towns, for the most part, are rural. A windswept canyon, carved out by a river that flows from Mt. Coronet, is home to the [[Valley Windworks]], which provides clean, wind-driven electricity to the nearby towns. This is not to say, however, that there is no importance to west Sinnoh, as [[Oreburgh City]], [[Eterna City]], and [[Canalave City]] are the locations of [[Gym|Pokémon Gyms]], and [[Jubilife City]], at the heart of the area, is the most technologically advanced city in the region.

Sinnoh's eastern half is home to a vast many more things, including [[Pokémon Super Contest]]s in [[Hearthome City]], a [[Veilstone Department Store|Department Store]] in [[Veilstone City]], the [[Great Marsh]] of [[Pastoria City]], and the awe-inspiring [[Vista Lighthouse]] of [[Sunyshore City]]. In each of these cities, as well, there is a Pokémon Gym, which is very important for League-bound {{pkmn|Trainer}}s.
[[File:Torn World.png|thumb|left|250px|Mt. Coronet's peak, with the entrance to the [[Distortion World]] above it, from the northwest.]]
Unlike the halves of Sinnoh divided longitudinally by Mt. Coronet, the northern area is sparsely populated, with [[Snowpoint City]] as the only major area. This is likely due to the cold climate and snowy terrain in the area. Despite this relative isolation, however, Snowpoint has a Pokémon Gym, making it another important stop for Trainers who wish to compete in the Pokémon League.

A third sub-region is the [[Battle Zone]], which is on a large island to the northeast of the mainland. Much like how people from the [[Sevii Islands]] seem to consider their home to be a separate region from [[Kanto]] and [[Johto]], people from the Battle Zone often refer to Sinnoh as a separate region. Several islands, including [[Newmoon Island]], [[Fullmoon Island]], and [[Iron Island]], lie off the northwestern coast of Sinnoh as well, though these are far eclipsed in both size and importance by the mainland.

Separated from both the Battle Zone and the mainland of Sinnoh by several straits is the island on which the {{si|Pokémon League}} of Sinnoh is located, the only access to which is by way of {{rt|223|Sinnoh}}. It is here where Sinnoh's {{si|Victory Road}} is located, which, unlike previous incarnations has not two, but three entrances: one of these, of course, is the southern entrance that Trainers from the mainland must navigate from, a second is the one that leads to the area in which the [[Elite Four]] can be challenged, and the third leads from a {{m|Defog|foggy}} area of Victory Road to {{rt|224|Sinnoh}}, which is said to be a miniature version of Sinnoh. North from Route 224, the [[Seabreak Path]] leads to {{p|Shaymin}}'s domain, the [[Flower Paradise]].

===Climate===
The climate of Sinnoh varies widely, and most of the region is made of mountainous or hilly areas. Unlike [[Hoenn]], which is located in the south where the climate is warmer, Sinnoh is located on the northern boundaries of the world where the temperature is cooler. It is so cold in the northern part of the region that snow falls constantly. The harsh snow that blows down from the mountain's peaks not only makes the area very cold, but makes the {{rt|217|Sinnoh|routes in the area}} perilous to travel on. Cities such as [[Snowpoint City]] are completely covered in snow, and Pokémon who live nearby have had to adapt to the climate. Recently, the southern side of the region has also become cooler; climate change is taking a toll. Areas such as [[Twinleaf Town]] and {{rt|201|Sinnoh}} now have small amounts of snow on the ground.

However, not all of the northern areas of Sinnoh are covered in snow. Due to the dry environments and mountainous areas such as [[Stark Mountain]], the small island known as the [[Battle Zone]] is subject to warmer climates. A constant sandstorm rages on {{rt|228|Sinnoh}} due to the flow of wind down though the mountains. Some of the southern areas of the Battle Zone are very tropical and contain dense jungles.
[[File:Sinnoh from the sky.png|thumb|right|250px|A part of the Sinnoh region where the city meets the sea]]
The mainland features full land geography, with only five [[water route]]s. Despite this lack of sea routes, in contrast to the [[Hoenn]] region, Sinnoh is known to be rich in water. Rivers that originate from the highlands and mountains in the center of the landmass runs through the region passing many cities, towns, and routes and into the ocean. There are many lakes throughout the region such as [[Lake Acuity]], [[Lake Valor]], and [[Lake Verity]]. All these factors create a tropical climate throughout the mainland. Many large cities settle on or close to the seaside; some of them have large ports.

Further inland, there are many different climates. Due to the mountain zones, different inland areas are subject to rain. This rain creates wetlands. Such areas may also be covered partially or completely by shallow pools of water. The soil in the wetland area is permanently saturated with moisture, which creates swamps, marshes, and bogs. In fact, [[Pastoria City]] was founded on marshy soils that attracted wild Pokémon. Unlike other regions, Sinnoh is sometimes troubled by fog. {{rt|210|Sinnoh}} is often covered in a thick cloud that makes obstacles and Trainers difficult to see; fortunately for travelers, this can be easily cleared.

===Energy sources===
The Sinnoh region is famed for its energy production and conservation via natural resources. Different areas of Sinnoh use different sources of energy for the use of power generation, heating, and transport fuels. The [[Oreburgh Mine]] is one of the main features in Oreburgh City, as well as the city's leading energy source. Its energy is exported to many parts of the region, including its neighbor, [[Jubilife City]], whose large population consumes a lot of energy. The mine is the livelihood of the town. Vents in the town allow steam to escape and fresh air to enter the mine, likely also clearing the mine of any poison gas (which is historically the bane of coal miners). The mine is operated with the utmost care to avoid causing damage to the natural habitats of wild Pokémon. The system of taking coal out of the mine is automated.

Another local energy source is the [[Valley Windworks]]. The Valley Windworks is a large wind farm situated in a windy valley close to Mt. Coronet, so as to generate as much electricity as possible. It is located just off {{rt|205|Sinnoh}}, a short walk east from Floaroma Town. In the area, there are eight tall wind turbines which generate energy that is in turn processed by the power plant in the center of the area. Many towns benefit from the natural renewable energy including [[Floaroma Town]], and [[Eterna City]].

The third and final renewable energy source Sinnoh has to offer is [[Sunyshore City]]'s solar panels, which are ingeniously designed for the use of power and transportation. Because the city is on the coast and gets hit by a lot of sunlight, the solar panels were built to collect energy for little cost, no pollution, and convenience to the city's citizens. It was also built due to the lack of space. However, there is a disadvantage: the solar panel system is often broken, and the city will experience massive blackouts at times. Citizens of and visitors to the city are able to walk around the city on top of the solar panels.

==Sinnoh League==
{{main|Sinnoh League}}
[[File:Sinnoh Elite Four.png‎|thumb|right|250px|The current members of Elite Four]]
The regional Pokémon League in the Sinnoh region is known as the Sinnoh League. The Sinnoh League is composed of eight [[Gym Leaders]] and four [[Elite Four]] members, along with the {{pkmn|Champion}}. Pokémon Trainers who earn eight [[badge]]s by defeating the Gym leaders of the Sinnoh League qualify to challenge the Elite Four located in the {{si|Pokémon League}} building. Gym Leaders are located in different cities and towns, each with their own specialty type. It is the Gym leader's job to be the protector of their respective town or city, as they should be the strongest Trainer residing there. Once all Gym Leaders have been defeated, Trainers may face the Elite Four and its Champion. To defeat the Elite Four, all five Trainers must be defeated in succession.
==Trivia==
[[File:Shinnoh DP Map.jpg|thumb|right|250px|Sinnoh map from Diamond and Pearl]]
* If one were to draw lines to connect the three lakes of Sinnoh, they form a big triangle with [[Mt. Coronet]] at the center. This is the same formation that {{p|Uxie}}, {{p|Mesprit}}, and {{p|Azelf}} make on the top of [[Spear Pillar]] with {{p|Dialga}} or {{p|Palkia}} in the middle, as well as the same formation put in areas relating to the [[Sinnoh myths]].
* Sinnoh is the only region of the main series games that has more than five letters in its name, having six.
* Sinnoh is also the only area traveled through where all the Gym Leaders that have been featured have appeared in an episode before Ash battled them.
* If a Pokémon hatches in an area exclusive to Platinum, then subsequently traded to Diamond and Pearl, its met location will display as "[[Faraway place]]", despite the fact that these areas (with the exception of the Distortion World and the Battle Frontier) are all within the Sinnoh region.
* Interestingly, Sinnoh has an [[List of locations by index number (Generation IV)|index number location]] programmed into [[Generation IV]] for it, despite the fact that all Sinnoh locations are programmed into the games already. This index location is at #2006, while coincidentally, was the Japanese release of Sinnoh's first games, {{game|Diamond and Pearl|s}}. This does not happen for the other three regions programmed in (i.e. Kanto is 2003, not 1996, Johto is 2004, not 1999, and Hoenn is 2005, not 2002). This data is unused during normal gameplay (i.e. without hacking); Pokémon from Sinnoh traded to a game taking place in Johto display their normal "met at" area, much like Pokémon from [[Kanto]] do when traded to Emerald.
* Sinnoh has the most places to fly out of all regions so far, having eighteen.
* Sinnoh is tied with [[Unova]] for having the most [[Gym|Pokémon Gyms]] in cities, all eight of them. [[Kanto]] comes in second with having Gyms in seven cities ({{isl|Cinnabar}} does not count because it is considered as an island, as opposed to a city). And both [[Hoenn]] and [[Johto]] are tied at six gyms in cities.
* Sinnoh has been shown to have more {{Shiny}} Pokémon inhabiting it than any other region featured in the [[List of alternately colored Pokémon in the anime#Shiny Pokémon|anime]] with a total of seven; {{p|Dustox}}, {{p|Metagross}}, {{p|Ditto}}, [[Legendary beasts (movie 13)|Raikou, Entei, Suicune]], and {{p|Ariados}}.
She appeared as a speaking character during the beginning sequence that was originally cut from ''[[Mewtwo Strikes Back]]'', but later featured on the ''[[Mewtwo Returns]]'' DVD as "The Uncut Story of Mewtwo's Origin". She also appeared in ''[[The Birth of Mewtwo]]'' CD Drama.

==History==
Fuji's despair at losing his daughter led him to dedicate most of his life to research into cloning, with the belief that he would be able to create a clone of Amber if he discovered the secrets of recreating life. This, of course, led [[Giovanni]] to fund him, with the condition that he would also clone {{p|Mew}}, creating [[Mewtwo (anime)|Mewtwo]].

Both Mew and Amber were cloned, and while they were both growing inside test tubes on [[New Island]], Mewtwo communicated with Amber telepathically. Unfortunately for Fuji, Mewtwo's genetic makeup (as a [[Pokémon]]) and sheer force of power kept him alive, and Amber (or the clone of the same) died (again). Fuji was heartbroken, but continued his work on Mewtwo with the hope that another try at cloning Amber would be more successful.

The next thing to happen to Fuji and his team of [[scientist]]s was just as tragic. The last incarnation of Amber died as Mewtwo destroyed the laboratory on New Island, as well as any hopes of seeing her alive again.
=Synopsis=
[[Giovanni]], the leader of [[Team Rocket]], has managed to create an enhanced clone of {{p|Mew}}. In this, he has created [[Mewtwo (anime)|Mewtwo]]. As the story begins, a confused Mewtwo asks himself who he is, what he is, and where he came from. Just then, Mewtwo wakes up in a test tube in one of Team Rocket's laboratories, where the scientists study him. Mewtwo breaks out of his test tube, as the head scientist, [[Dr. Fuji]], tells Mewtwo that he was made by humans and is a clone. Mewtwo is angry that he was created by humans, not by natural causes, so he destroys the lab and kills all the scientists. Dr. Fuji says to himself that he regrets playing God before dying at the hands of Mewtwo. Then, Giovanni arrives in his private helicopter and offers to help give some value to Mewtwo's life. Mewtwo takes up the offer, and is put in a suit of armor to prevent him from rebelling against Team Rocket.

Over the next few weeks, Mewtwo does most of Team Rocket's dirty work, capturing wild Pokémon and beating any Trainers that come into the gym in Viridian City. Mewtwo has had enough and blasts off out of Team Rocket HQ and back to the island where he was born.

Upon returning to the island where he was born, Mewtwo vows to get revenge on those who created and tried to enslave him, and more importantly, to prove his worth as a living being by finding and beating his original, Mew.

Meanwhile, [[Ash Ketchum|Ash]], [[Misty]], and [[Brock]] are preparing for lunch until a Pokémon Trainer known as [[Raymond]] shows up and challenges Ash, who is happy to oblige, since he enjoys one or two battles before lunch. With Pikachu jumping into battle, Ash easily beats the Pokémon Trainer. What he doesn't know is that he's being watched, not only by Team Rocket, but by a mysterious third party. [[Jessie]], [[James]], and [[Meowth (Team Rocket)|Meowth]], who were also watching the battle, don't have any food. Suddenly, a Dragonite flies in with a letter for Ash and friends. It projects a hologram of a mysterious woman who tells the Trainers to head to a pier in order to get to an island fortress called New Island.

Later, the gang arrive at the Pokémon Center and discover that the [[Nurse Joy]] who works there has been missing for quite a while. [[Miranda (Mewtwo Strikes Back)|Miranda]], the pier master tells them that she has lived on the pier all her life and that the storm is the most fierce she's ever seen.

Soon, most of the other Pokémon Trainers take off for a place called New Island. Team Rocket give Ash and friends a boat ride, but the storm proves too much for them, so they have to use Ash and Misty's Water Pokémon to get all the way to New Island.

As the heroes barely arrive at New Island, the mystery woman from the hologram letter greets them and takes them to the dining room to meet the other Trainers who arrived safely.

Meanwhile, as Team Rocket try to get inside the fortress, Mew can be seen flying around without a care in the world.

As they arrive in the dining room, Ash and friends meet three Pokémon Trainers named [[Neesha]], [[Fergus]], and [[Corey]]. Just then, the mystery woman introduces everybody in the room to her master, who is revealed to be none other than Mewtwo! Then, the woman faints, Brock quickly catches her, and it is revealed that the mystery woman is the missing Nurse Joy. Mewtwo starts telling the Trainers that humans are weak and cruel, and the world will fall into ruin because it is controlled by them. He also says that Pokémon are no better off, since they choose to associate with humans.

As Team Rocket get into the fortress and make their way into a laboratory, they come across a weird-looking machine, a computer, and Pokémon sleeping in giant pods. Jessie accidentally sits on the computer controls which play back a recorded message from Dr. Fuji about the fossilized eyelash of Mew that was created to form Mewtwo. Suddenly, the machine takes a piece of hair from Meowth to create a clone of him.

Mewtwo leads Ash and the other Trainers into the stadium part of the fortress and suggests that they should battle Pokémon to see who is the strongest, the clones vs. the originals. [[Ash's Charizard]], Corey's {{p|Venusaur}}, and Neesha's {{p|Blastoise}} are no match for Mewtwo's clones, and he claims the originals with his invention called Shadow Balls.

As Misty hides [[Misty's Togetic|Togepi]], Ash tries to get his Pokémon back in their Poké Balls, but that move is all in vain since Mewtwo's Shadow Balls can also penetrate them, as well as capture [[Ash's Pikachu|Pikachu]]. Ash quickly follows the Shadow Balls back to Mewtwo's cloning laboratory and destroys the cloning machine, rescuing his Pokémon in the process.

Mewtwo demands to know what happened in the explosion, and Ash emerges from the smoke with his and every Trainer's Pokémon. Ash tries to punch Mewtwo, but Mewtwo's forcefield sends him flying. Just then, after hearing all the commotion, Mew flies down to encounter his clone and tell him that the originals will never be defeated by their copies when they fight without special powers. Thus, Mew and Mewtwo have a big battle that follows, which is about Pokémon fighting for the meaning of their lives, since (as Mewtwo sees it) clones have no value, and whoever wins will be the "real" Pokémon, not the worthless clone.

Ash is horrified to see all the Pokémon fighting their clones, especially Pikachu getting slapped to death by his clone. He eventually falls back down to the stadium floor, causing Misty and Brock to come to his aid. They and Nurse Joy talk about how Mewtwo and all the clones are living beings with value, as well as how when one animal invades the territory of another animal, it doesn't give up until it's driven the trespasser away. And then everyone expresses fear that the originals and clones will never give up, resulting in their deaths.

As Team Rocket also look on in horror, Meowth talks with his clone about philosophy and the moon, and how tasteful it is to be talking about the moon at a time like this.

Just as Mew and Mewtwo are about to finish each other off with huge energy blasts, Ash runs out into the crossfire and gets turned to stone after getting killed in the blast.

Pikachu tries to revive Ash by using Thunderbolt, but has no luck. This saddens Pikachu and everybody in the stadium, as well as leave Mewtwo amazed by Ash's sacrifice. All the tears of Pikachu, the other Pokémon, and the clones magically revive Ash and bring him back from the dead.

After witnessing all of this, Mewtwo states that it does not matter who is more powerful, that the clones and originals both have value, and nothing else about the matter. He also says that it would be best if no one knew about what happened. When Mewtwo flies off, he tells Ash that he will find a place where clones can live in peace. As a result, all the memories of this event are erased from the Trainers' minds.

Ash, Misty, and Brock instantly finds themselves back at the pier with no memory of their adventure on New Island.

Meanwhile, Team Rocket lay dormant on the empty New Island as the credits begin to roll.
=Trivia=
*This is the first time in the anime that a move from a game not yet released was used. The move in question was Mewtwo's {{M|Shadow Ball}}, which did not become an in-game move until [[Generation II]].
*When Meowth goes into the cloning machine, a silhouette of him appears. Jessie and James quip, "Who's that Pokémon?" This is most likely a reference to the "Who's that Pokémon?" segments between commercial breaks in the anime series.They do the same thing for [[Ash's Pikachu]].
*[[Misty's Togepi]] was the only Pokémon that wasn't cloned. She was able to hide her {{p|Togepi}} in her bag, and unlike [[Brock's Vulpix]], it didn't get captured.
*While Team Rocket (as Vikings) is giving [[Ash]] and co. a ride to New Island, [[Brock]] comments that he didn't know that [[wp: vikings|vikings]] still existed. Ash then says that they come from [[wp:Minnesota|Minnesota]], a reference to the [[wp:Minnesota Vikings|Minnesota Vikings]] football team (English dub only).
*[[Corey]]'s {{p|Venusaur}}, [[Ash's Charizard]], and [[Neesha]]'s {{p|Blastoise}}, the three final forms of the [[starter Pokémon]] of [[Kanto]], fight against Mewtwo's clone Venusaur, Charizard, and Blastoise before any other Pokémon fights its clone.
*The movie had two VHS releases in Japan. The second release reanimated some background effects, such as water and clouds, with CGI effects. This version was then used for the dub.
*Some of the Pokémon appearing on the front didn't appear in the actual movie itself.
*This is the only movie that Ash is not seen on the cover. Interestingly, Pikachu does appear.
* Early in the film, Ash engages in a battle with another Trainer. In one battle, the opponent's Golem, a Ground-type Pokémon, was defeated by Ash's Pikachu's Electric attack. In the games, Ground-types are immune to Electric attacks, no matter how much stronger the Electric-type Pokémon is.
* The official Normal and Psychic Pokédex book says that Ash was knocked out by Mew and Mewtwo, although he was really killed.
* The movie was re-released on DVD in Japan and contained the Japanese and US audio tracks along with the complete 'Origin of Mewtwo' short.
* The VHS release of the film had a trailer of Pokémon 2000 and came with a free trading card. The DVD release came with a Mewtwo promotional card.
* For two weeks until Toy Story 2 opened, it was the largest opening for an animated feature.
* In the laboratory destruction scene, the scientists (except for Dr. Fuji) scream when Mewtwo uses his powers to destroy the lab. The last scientist emits a lower-pitched-than-usual [[wp:Wilhelm scream|Wilhelm scream]].
* The Pikachu segment is the first appearance of {{p|Snubbull}} and {{p|Marill}}, and the feature film is the first appearance of {{p|Donphan}}. All three Pokémon species would eventually be main characters.
* This is the only film that is confirmed as canon to the anime; in episodes 60-62 of the Pokémon TV series, scenes of Mewtwo breaking out the lab and battling at Giovanni's gym can be seen. Furthermore, the film used footage of Gary Oak battling Mewtwo. The director's commentary jokes that they had to get a 'stand-in' for Gary because his agent was asking for too much.
* The other three Trainers in the movie have the evolved forms several of Ash's, Misty's, and Brock's Pokémon. These are [[Ash's Bulbasaur|Venusaur]], [[Ash's Squirtle|Blastoise]], [[Brock's Vulpix|Ninetales]], [[Misty's Psyduck|Golduck]], and [[Ash's Pidgeot|Pidgeot]].

==Errors==
* In the English dub, three Pokémon are referred to by the wrong name. {{p|Pidgeot}} was called {{p|Pidgeotto}}, {{p|Scyther}} was called {{p|Alakazam}}, and {{p|Sandslash}} was called {{p|Sandshrew}}. In the audio commentary, [[4Kids|4Kids Entertainment]] stated that they decided to leave the Alakazam error when they noticed it as something for the children watching to notice and because they felt it was plausible in context that Team Rocket could make a mistake. (A September 8, 2007 Cartoon Network airing left this error for all three)
* In the beginning of the feature film, the Trainer's Machamp is shown coming out of the Poké Ball twice.
* One scene where Fergus releases his Gyarados in the water to ride on its back, the Gyarados' lips were blue instead of the normal yellow. It is later seen with normal yellow lips.

==Dub edits==
*The plot in the dubbed English version contains a "fighting is wrong" moral and portrays Mewtwo as a cold heartless villain who just wants to take over Earth.
*During the battle between the Pokémon and their clones, the music that plays in the background is different in both versions: the Japanese version plays instrumental music very softly, while the English version plays ''[[Brother My Brother]]''.
*When Pikachu is repeatedly shocking Ash to try and bring him back to life, Misty says "Pikachu..." in the Japanese version, and "Please, no..." in the English version.

Keeping Bulbagarden online costs a significant amount, and it is only by [[Bulbapedia:Benefactors|generous]] [[Bulbapedia:Site support|donations]] that we are able to foot the bill. We hope to decrease our reliance on charity by publishing advertisements on Bulbapedia, which is the single largest site on the server in traffic terms. Specifically, we are proposing the publication of [[wp:Google|Google]] [[wp:AdSense|AdSense]] advertisements in the site-wide notice area.

We have refrained from doing so in the past because people are not drawn to Bulbapedia for its community, as is the case with the [[Bulbagarden forums]], but for its content. Bulbapedia is a [[wp:Web 2.0|Web 2.0]] site, therefore its content is created by its users - and to that degree it is also owned by its users, as opposed to other reference sites like Veekun or Smogon, where content is created by the staff. To monetize user-created content can be considered unethical - as one cynic put it, "Web 2.0: you make all the content, we make all the money."

Therefore, we have decided to consult you, the creators of content, on this matter. Naturally, votes will be weighted to reflect the number of edits the voter has made. Please cast your vote by adding your signature (<nowiki>~~~~</nowiki>) to the end of the signature lists below. All registered users may vote '''once''' to:
* Support the publication of Google AdSense advertisements on Bulbapedia
* Reject the publication of Google AdSense advertisements on Bulbapedia
* Abstain

Users may change their vote at any time until this poll is closed.

{{Recasting controversy series}}
On March 21, 2006, it was discovered that [[Pokémon USA]] was going to recast the voices for the English-language dub of the [[Pokémon anime]], from season nine onwards. [[Pokémon USA]] used the special that will aired on April 29, ''[[The Mastermind of Mirage Pokémon]]'', as a testing ground for the new voice actors. This caused a controversy in the Pokémon fan community, and many flame wars.

=Introduction=
Early in 2006, [[4Kids Entertainment]] let their merchandising rights laspe to dub any more Pokémon episodes. Instead, dubbing was handed to [[TAJ Studios]], which worked on the Pokémon series before. There was a catch, however: the voice actors to be replaced were to sound like the old voices. The special episode, which aired on April 29 was used as a testing ground for the new voices. Because of this, and the discontinuation of anime in their block as they were planning to move to [[Wikipedia:The CW Television Network|The CW Network]], [[Kids WB]] decided not to renew the series, and [[Cartoon Network]], the sibling cable network owned by Kids WB's owners, [[Wikipedia:Time Warner|Time Warner]], started to air the series as of September 8, 2006.

= E-mails =
Members from various Pokémon forums sent emails to the actual voice actors who dubbed the Pokémon series formerly.
This was sent by a staff member of Serebii Forums:

Thanks for your very kind letter. There's very little I'm permitted to say on the subject other than what you've already stated in your e-mail.
On a personal note, I'm very saddened by this development as I'm quite close to Ol' Meowth. The only thing I can tell you is I'm not leaving the VA business by any stretch of the imagination, and I hope to (like all cats) land on my feet

Thanks again and I'll be sure to pass your note onto my fellow VAs
Pokémon USA has decided that it's too expensive to use 4Kids and the actors that have made Pokémon the TV show such a success for the last 10 years. They have 'behind our backs' re-cast the show with 'sound-a-likes' to try to save money. They actually believe the fans don't care. They are starting with the 10 year anniversary special - starring all new voices. The main cast, me included, has taken a lot of pride in the characters we have helped to create. To change now, on the last season, based on greed is a sad example of what big business kids marketing really is.

Please spread the word - maybe some fan buzz can stop this tragedy.
=== From Scott===
Hey Scott-
Unfortunately, this is very real. We have been informed that Pokémon USA has already made plans to do the Anniversary special with substitute voices. Apparently, they haven't made a firm decision on the next season yet. None of us have been formally asked to do the show, we've simply been told we'll be replaced. Pokémon USA has made no effort to negotiate with 4Kids, simply feeling that getting a cheaper rate to dub the show is enough. They care nothing for the quality. They will be using new script writers, voices, music, etc. We (the voice actors and those at 4Kids who work so hard on the show) are all extremely upset as we care very much for Pokémon and what we've worked to create. However, there is nothing that we can do. It seems that the only recourse is for fans to write to Pokémon USA and tell them how wrong their decision is and how it will adversely affect the show.

Thanks for your concern. Please spread the word and let's all try to work together to right this wrong before it's too late.

hey Steve-

Thanks for your note. Unfortunately this is all too true. Pokemon USA recently informed us that they are dubbing the Anniversary special with sound alikes. They are not sure about the next season. None of us (actors, script writers, etc.) have even been asked to continue working on the show. They have not even attempted to negotiate with 4kids. They say that the show will be exactly the same even though they are replacing all the elements and using all new people totally unfamiliar with the project. We are all extremely upset about this turn of events as we care so much about the show and have no say in the matter whatsoever. I am hoping that if enough people write to Pokemon USA and express their dismay, we may right this wrong before it is too late!

Spread the word!

Thanks for your concern.
= Fan reaction =
Many fans were upset and opposed the idea of recasting the voice actors with new ones. Some liked the idea because they did not like the old voice actors. Some wanted to see the special episode before making a comment.

Some fans who opposed the idea of recasting decided to send letters to Pokémon USA by mail and e-mail. An [[Save Our Voice Actors|online petition]] has also been made by online members.

However, on April 29, 2006, after the special aired, many Pokémon fans disliked the new voices. According to a [http://bmgf.bulbagarden.net/poll.php?do=showresults&pollid=364 Bulbagarden Forums poll], one person liked the special, 17 people said it was OK, 15 people hated most of the voices, and 30 hated the new voices altogether (as of April 30th at 1:19 PM ET). Some Pokémon fans planned to boycott merchandise from Pokémon USA, and many started to write complaint letters to Pokémon USA.

== PUSA's Reaction to Complaints ==
After many complaints from the fans about Ash's voice, which was done by [[Kayzie Rogers]] (as "Jamie Peacock") they recasted the voice actor for Ash. It was announced at Comic Con International that [[Sarah Natochenny]] will do the voice of Ash. Also, "[[The Mastermind of Mirage Pokémon]]" special was redubbed and improved slightly. Sarah Natochenny's performance of Ash is still a controversy for some in the Pokémon Community up to this day.
