Along with {{p|Chikorita}} and {{p|Cyndaquil}}, it is one of the three [[starter Pokémon]] available at the beginning of the [[Generation II]] games. It is also available in {{game|Emerald}} as an award for catching the first 200 Pokémon in the [[Hoenn]] Pokédex.

Totodile comes with the [[ability]] {{A|Torrent}}, which increases the power of Water-type attacks by 50% once the Pokémon has less than one-third of its maximum HP.

Totodile evolves into {{p|Croconaw}} starting at Level 18, then into {{p|Feraligatr}} starting at Level 30.

==Biology==
Totodile is the first form of the Feraligatr evolutionary line. Despite their small size, Totodile are very powerful, especially underwater. Immediately upon hatching, the mother will take her newborn brood down to the water to swim and hunt. Despite their strength, young Totodile stay close to their mother for quite some time.

Totodile look like small blue alligators with red spines. They are bipedal and have sharp claws. Their large jaws are very strong and filled with sharp teeth.

Totodile have a powerful set of jaws for a Pokémon its size. Just a playful nip can be painful. Like the other Water-typed Starter Pokémon, the power of Totodile's Water-type attacks get stronger when it is in a pinch.

Totodile have a habit of {{m2|Bite|biting}} anything it sees. Because of this, you should never turn your back on it.

== Synopsis ==
{{Ash}} and friends, training for the Pokémon League, are jogging on a cliffside road. Ash, decked out in his white and orange shirt, is ahead of Misty (in her blue suit) and Brock (in his basketball jersey). However, Ash's progress has stopped when a truck passes by, spewing its exhaust in its wake. Blinded, Ash does not see that he is in the path of another truck heading in his direction. Misty and Brock look in horror as Ash is seemingly hit by the truck. Fortunately, the truck had swerved out of the way, leaving Ash unharmed, but it has created a large pileup behind him. [[Officer Jenny]] quickly arrives to defuse the volatile arguments caused by Ash and the drivers, who quickly speed off. As Ash wonders why the road would be so crowded, Officer Jenny tells them that it is the surfing season, and that the famous wave, Humunga-Dunga, is coming. Surfers from all over have tried to ride the Humunga-Dunga, which only appears once every 20 years, and plant their flag at the top of a rock, much like a famous surfer named Jan had done some 40 years ago.

Ash decides to also try surfing out, but his first go-around does not bode well. He wipes out often, and when on one occasion his foot cramps up, he is saved by an older man and his Pikachu. As Ash recovers, Misty and Brock introduces him to Victor and his [[Puka|Pikachu]], who had help saved him from drowning. As {{AP|Pikachu}} meets Puka outside and watch the sea together, Team Rocket, in the [[Gyarados submarine]], plots to steal both.

In the mean time, Victor's past is revealed: 40 years ago, he had been a young surfer, who had tried to emulate Jan. Although his skills were not good, Jan eventually took him under his wing, teaching him all about surfing. After Jan had conquered Humunga-Dunga and planted his flag atop the rock, he had given his own surfboard to Victor, simply saying "You can do it, too". With that, Jan had left to see the world. 20 years later, the Humunga-Dunga had arrived, but he had failed. Discouraged, he was about to give up on surfing, but he then saw a [[Puka|Pikachu]] that had been cast away in a box out at sea. This was when he first met Puka, and since then, the two have worked as a team: Puka had the ability to sense the waves, emitting a bluish glow when a big wave had approached, and it had helped the two conquer many big waves on the island - Humunga-Dunga was the only one that they have yet to conquer.

However, Victor's reverie is interrupted by Team Rocket, who have kidnapped both Pikachu and Puka. Diving down to make their getaway (with Pikachu straining to break himself and Puka out of their glass cage), Team Rocket encounter some real {{p|Gyarados}} in its mating season. The Gyarados is none too pleased, attacking the submarine and finishing off with a {{m|Hyper Beam}}, causing the submarine to launch into the air and sending Team Rocket flying, but freeing Pikachu and Puka.

Chasing after them on a boat, Ash manages to have {{AP|Bulbasaur}} catch Pikachu, but Puka falls into the water. Victor himself dives into the water, and using Jan's surfboard, manages to rescue Puka. However, the waves become more fierce, and Brock (now driving the boat) is forced to retreat, leaving Victor and Puka alone in the water. Just then, Puka begins to glow - a sign that Humunga-Dunga is coming.

Worried about Victor and Puka's safety from atop a nearby cliff, they are relieved when they find Victor and Puka riding the wave. As for the two, they manage to position themselves close to the rock, and manage to plant their flag atop the rock, next to Jan's. Back on shore, as Ash congratulates Victor for achieving his lifelong goal, Victor turns to a small group of young surfers, simply saying to them what he had been told so long ago: "Hey, you can do it, too."

As the episode closes, Team Rocket is seen being surrounded by Gyarados, atop a rock with half of their submarine.

Since only one member was involved, which is rather unlike most of Team Rocket's plots, it is possible that this was a semi-independent member that did not hear of Giovanni's fall.

===In the Sevii Islands===
In FireRed and LeafGreen, Team Rocket had a branch in the [[Sevii Islands]], searching for the [[Items#Ruby|Ruby]] and [[Items#Sapphire|Sapphire]] gems. This branch was based in the [[Rocket Warehouse]] in [[Five Isle Meadow]] on [[Chrono Island]]. In the end, the games' hero/heroine defeated the Admin there, making him realize that with Giovanni defeated in Kanto, all is lost for the Sevii branch. The team subsequently pulled out of the Sevii Islands. It has not been seen there since.

===In Johto===
In the [[Generation II]] games, three years after the aforementioned events, a new Team Rocket focused its attention on [[Johto]], starting off by kidnapping [[Slowpoke (Pokémon)|Slowpoke]]s from [[Azalea Town]] to [[Slowpoke Well]] and cutting off their tails to sell on the black market. Eventually they set up another base underneath a shop in [[Mahogany Town]] and built a machine that emitted high-frequency sound waves, enraging the {{p|Gyarados}} in the [[Lake of Rage]] north of Mahogany Town. With the help of [[Lance]], the [[League Champion]] from [[Indigo Plateau]], the games' {{ga|Gold|hero}}/{{ga|Kris|heroine}} foiled the team's operations. In a final and desperate attempt to contact their former leader, [[Giovanni]], members of the team attacked the [[Johto Radio Tower|Radio Tower]] in [[Goldenrod City]], but were ousted by the hero/heroine yet again.

The members involved in the Johto plots may have some connection with the Sevii Islands branch of Team Rocket, as one of the computers there indicates a plan to use ultrasonic waves on Pokémon to make them evolve.

In the anime, Team Rocket is based in Kanto, with many smaller branches reaching out in Kanto and Johto. Giovanni is the Gym Leader of Viridian City during the early part of [[Ash Ketchum|Ash]]'s journey. There is also an underground school for training aspiring Team Rocket members. In addition, Team Rocket had its headquarters near [[Pallet Town]] and [[Viridian City]], but this was destroyed by {{an|Mewtwo}} in its rage; it is unknown where the headquarters are now. All that is known is that the headquarters are now in a large building built at the end of a canyon and guarded by many grunts, seen when Jessie, James, and Meowth returned from the [[Hoenn]] region to report back to Giovanni.

===The trio===

A trio of members, [[Jessie]], [[James]], and a talking {{MTR}}, were defeated when on assignment to steal Pokémon from the Viridian City [[Pokémon Center]] by [[Ash Ketchum]], and since then have been following him everywhere on his journey, attempting to steal the {{AP|Pikachu}} that defeated them and any other Pokémon, items, and money that happen to appear on the way. After following the boy throughout the Kanto and Johto regions, coming in contact with other Team Rocket members, they continued after him to the [[Hoenn]] region under the direction of Giovanni, who assigned them to establish a branch of Team Rocket there (in reality only a simple ploy to get them out of his hair). When Ash returned from Hoenn after competing in its [[Ever Grande Conference|regional League Conference]], the trio followed him, again returning to their boss empty-handed. After once again following him through Kanto as he competed in the [[Battle Frontier]], they again followed him to Sinnoh with the same goal as before: to establish a Team Rocket branch there.

It is unknown why they have not simply given Giovanni some of the Pokémon that they have managed to capture along the way in [[Poké Ball]]s, such as {{TP|Jessie|Seviper}} or {{TP|James|Cacnea}}. Meowth often [[Boss fantasies|fantasizes]] about pleasing "The Boss" with some hairbrained scheme where, as a result he would replace {{TP|Giovanni|Persian}} as Giovanni's favorite pet. In Giovanni's opinion, however, they are "a bumbling trio" that "can't do anything right," and as of yet, they have failed to come up with a single thing that is acceptable to give to him while eating up the organization's funding with their many robots and schemes. Occasionally, the trio is also forced to work with Ash and company in certain extreme circumstances.

Many members of Team Rocket besides Giovanni and the trio have appeared. Notably, these include a recurring rival duo to Jessie and James made of [[Butch]] and [[Cassidy]], who report to [[Dr. Namba]] instead of Giovanni himself, [[Attila]] and [[Hun]], who are antagonists to {{jo|Jimmy}}, {{jo|Marina}}, and [[Vincent]] as Jessie and James are to {{Ash}} and [[Ash's friends|his friends]] in ''[[The Legend of Thunder]]'', [[Tyson (Team Rocket)|Tyson]], who was in charge of the Pokémon evolution experiment conducted by Team Rocket at the [[Lake of Rage]], and [[Domino]] and [[Vicious]], high-ranking agents who work individually and are seen in a [[Mewtwo Returns|long special episode]] and the [[Pokémon 4Ever|fourth movie]], respectively. [[Professor Sebastian]] seems to be a high-ranking Rocket scientist, developing both Attila and Hun's and Tyson's devices. Jessie's mother, [[Miyamoto]], was once a member before she disappeared on an expedition to capture {{p|Mew}} while serving under [[Madame Boss|Giovanni's mother]]. Seemingly, all Team Rocket members who are Agents or above, up to Elite Officer, come in pairs.

Team Rocket has attempted to do many major and potentially globally-altering operations, including cloning DNA of Mew and altering it to create {{an|Mewtwo}}. This stemmed out of a desire of Giovanni to appease his mother's obsession with Mew. When Mewtwo finally finished developing, he deceived Mewtwo into working for him, using him in Gym Battles against such Trainers as [[Gary Oak]], who lost miserably. Team Rocket also attempted to capture and control a {{p|Lugia}} and {{p|Celebi}}, and it also created a device that could force Pokémon to evolve.

They have various means of [[Transportation in Pokémon|transportation]], such as boats, submarines and helicopters.

Although the grunts are first seen in ''[[PS001|Glimpse of the Glow]]'' searching for {{p|Mew}} in [[Pallet Town]], Team Rocket as an organization was not introduced until ''[[PS006|Gyarados Splashes In!]]'' in the same chapter, [[Red, Green & Blue chapter (Special)|Red, Green & Blue]]. Here they are mentioned by [[Professor Oak]] as an evil syndicate that use Pokémon for their evil purposes, mostly experiments.

However, Giovanni returned to the [[Viridian City]] Gym, as he was also the legitimate [[Gym Leader]] there, but the hero/heroine defeated him there, too. Then, Giovanni, acknowledging him/her as the better trainer, disappeared without a trace.

Three years later, Team Rocket returned to Kanto to steal a critical part from the [[Power Plant]], but this plot was on a small scale and was ultimately the last chronological appearance of Team Rocket in the games. Since only one member was involved, which is rather unlike most of Team Rocket's plots, it is possible that this was a semi-independent member that did not hear of Giovanni's fall.

===In the Sevii Islands===
In FireRed and LeafGreen, Team Rocket had a branch in the [[Sevii Islands]], searching for the [[Items#Ruby|Ruby]] and [[Items#Sapphire|Sapphire]] gems. This branch was based in the [[Rocket Warehouse]] in [[Five Isle Meadow]] on [[Chrono Island]]. In the end, the games' hero/heroine defeated the Admin there, making him realize that with Giovanni defeated in Kanto, all is lost for the Sevii branch. The team subsequently pulled out of the Sevii Islands. It has not been seen there since.

===In Johto===
In the [[Generation II]] games, three years after the aforementioned events, a new Team Rocket focused its attention on [[Johto]], starting off by kidnapping [[Slowpoke (Pokémon)|Slowpoke]]s from [[Azalea Town]] to [[Slowpoke Well]] and cutting off their tails to sell on the black market. Eventually they set up another base underneath a shop in [[Mahogany Town]] and built a machine that emitted high-frequency sound waves, enraging the {{p|Gyarados}} in the [[Lake of Rage]] north of Mahogany Town. With the help of [[Lance]], the [[League Champion]] from [[Indigo Plateau]], the games' {{ga|Gold|hero}}/{{ga|Kris|heroine}} foiled the team's operations. In a final and desperate attempt to contact their former leader, [[Giovanni]], members of the team attacked the [[Johto Radio Tower|Radio Tower]] in [[Goldenrod City]], but were ousted by the hero/heroine yet again.

The members involved in the Johto plots may have some connection with the Sevii Islands branch of Team Rocket, as one of the computers there indicates a plan to use ultrasonic waves on Pokémon to make them evolve.

==In the anime==

In the anime, Team Rocket is based in Kanto, with many smaller branches reaching out in Kanto and Johto. Giovanni is the Gym Leader of Viridian City during the early part of [[Ash Ketchum|Ash]]'s journey. There is also an underground school for training aspiring Team Rocket members. In addition, Team Rocket had its headquarters near [[Pallet Town]] and [[Viridian City]], but this was destroyed by {{an|Mewtwo}} in its rage; it is unknown where the headquarters are now. All that is known is that the headquarters are now in a large building built at the end of a canyon and guarded by many grunts, seen when Jessie, James, and Meowth returned from the [[Hoenn]] region to report back to Giovanni.

===The trio===

A trio of members, [[Jessie]], [[James]], and a talking {{MTR}}, were defeated when on assignment to steal Pokémon from the Viridian City [[Pokémon Center]] by [[Ash Ketchum]], and since then have been following him everywhere on his journey, attempting to steal the {{AP|Pikachu}} that defeated them and any other Pokémon, items, and money that happen to appear on the way. After following the boy throughout the Kanto and Johto regions, coming in contact with other Team Rocket members, they continued after him to the [[Hoenn]] region under the direction of Giovanni, who assigned them to establish a branch of Team Rocket there (in reality only a simple ploy to get them out of his hair). When Ash returned from Hoenn after competing in its [[Ever Grande Conference|regional League Conference]], the trio followed him, again returning to their boss empty-handed. After once again following him through Kanto as he competed in the [[Battle Frontier]], they again followed him to Sinnoh with the same goal as before: to establish a Team Rocket branch there.

It is unknown why they have not simply given Giovanni some of the Pokémon that they have managed to capture along the way in [[Poké Ball]]s, such as {{TP|Jessie|Seviper}} or {{TP|James|Cacnea}}. Meowth often [[Boss fantasies|fantasizes]] about pleasing "The Boss" with some hairbrained scheme where, as a result he would replace {{TP|Giovanni|Persian}} as Giovanni's favorite pet. In Giovanni's opinion, however, they are "a bumbling trio" that "can't do anything right," and as of yet, they have failed to come up with a single thing that is acceptable to give to him while eating up the organization's funding with their many robots and schemes. Occasionally, the trio is also forced to work with Ash and company in certain extreme circumstances.

===Other members===
Many members of Team Rocket besides Giovanni and the trio have appeared. Notably, these include a recurring rival duo to Jessie and James made of [[Butch]] and [[Cassidy]], who report to [[Dr. Namba]] instead of Giovanni himself, [[Attila]] and [[Hun]], who are antagonists to {{jo|Jimmy}}, {{jo|Marina}}, and [[Vincent]] as Jessie and James are to {{Ash}} and [[Ash's friends|his friends]] in ''[[The Legend of Thunder]]'', [[Tyson (Team Rocket)|Tyson]], who was in charge of the Pokémon evolution experiment conducted by Team Rocket at the [[Lake of Rage]], and [[Domino]] and [[Vicious]], high-ranking agents who work individually and are seen in a [[Mewtwo Returns|long special episode]] and the [[Pokémon 4Ever|fourth movie]], respectively. [[Professor Sebastian]] seems to be a high-ranking Rocket scientist, developing both Attila and Hun's and Tyson's devices. Jessie's mother, [[Miyamoto]], was once a member before she disappeared on an expedition to capture {{p|Mew}} while serving under [[Madame Boss|Giovanni's mother]]. Seemingly, all Team Rocket members who are Agents or above, up to Elite Officer, come in pairs.

Team Rocket has attempted to do many major and potentially globally-altering operations, including cloning DNA of Mew and altering it to create {{an|Mewtwo}}. This stemmed out of a desire of Giovanni to appease his mother's obsession with Mew. When Mewtwo finally finished developing, he deceived Mewtwo into working for him, using him in Gym Battles against such Trainers as [[Gary Oak]], who lost miserably. Team Rocket also attempted to capture and control a {{p|Lugia}} and {{p|Celebi}}, and it also created a device that could force Pokémon to evolve.

They have various means of [[Transportation in Pokémon|transportation]], such as boats, submarines and helicopters.

==In the Pokémon Special manga==
Although the grunts are first seen in ''[[PS001|Glimpse of the Glow]]'' searching for {{p|Mew}} in [[Pallet Town]], Team Rocket as an organization was not introduced until ''[[PS006|Gyarados Splashes In!]]'' in the same chapter, [[Red, Green & Blue chapter (Special)|Red, Green & Blue]]. Here they are mentioned by [[Professor Oak]] as an evil syndicate that use Pokémon for their evil purposes, mostly experiments.

==In the TCG==
Team Rocket has been featured in several expansions of the TCG, most notably in the self-named {{TCG|Team Rocket}} expansion, where {{TCG|Dark Pokémon}} were introduced, and the {{TCG|EX Team Rocket Returns}} expansion, which commemorated the release of [[Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen Versions]]. In addition, there are several Pokémon belonging to Team Rocket in the {{TCG|Gym Heroes}}, {{TCG|Gym Challenge}}, and {{TCG|Pokémon VS}} expansions.
