Flying?
According to trivia Gyarados has been seen flying in the anime. What episode/movie was this? -- Nepse 04:11, 27.02.12 (UTC)

Why not part Dragon?
I think it's best to bring it up here, where the issue would be relevant, than elsewhere. We all know Gyarados is Water/Flying, and that Dragon was a type in Generation I. However, I read somewhere (I forget where exactly) that there were only 13 types in the original Red and Green, and that Ice and Dragon were added in Blue. Of course, I theorize that any Ice Pokémon were Water, since that's what they use in the TCG, and that any Dragon Pokémon were Normal. Since the Base Set came out only ten days after Blue was released in Japan, it would make some sense.

After all, look at how many Pokémon from Gen I are Ice only. None. There are several Water/Ice (which I think was because the type was added as an afterthought), and Articuno's the only one where missing the Ice-type would really matter (since there's NEVER a pure Flying-type). Heck, if Articuno was originally Water/Flying (which I suspect), both the beasts and birds would be the same types. The Dratini family were the only Dragon-types, so they could have used Normal instead.

But I do suppose that they wanted Gyarados to have at least something different from Magikarp in Red/Green (if the "Ice and Dragon came later" story is true), so they gave it the Flying-type as its secondary type, and just never changed it because it would alter a lot (and maybe because Kingdra was already in the works). As for why Magnemite and Magneton got Steel? Eh, they're magnet-based. If they didn't get the Steel-type when it was introduced people would be thinking "wow, that was dumb". And they needed to give Jasmine more than just Steelix. Sure, there'd be Skarmory, Forretress, and Scizor otherwise, but jeez. Two are Bug, and one of those is evolved from something Bugsy has, and Skarmory's known to have been a good choice for a long time; they can't make the Gyms too hard.

...yeah. So if the thing I read was correct, to trivia with that tidbit. If it wasn't, well... I dunno. TTEchidna 04:36, 19 August 2007 (UTC)
:I always just figured it was because a Water/Dragon type would be too hard to beat with the sparse moves in Gen I. Dragon Rage was, like, the only Dragon move, and it only did 40 damage. So there'd be nothing super-effective against it. --DarkfireTaimatsu 05:24, 19 August 2007 (UTC)

I think its inaccurate to say they never learn any Flying moves, I'm pretty sure I recall using my Gyarados for Fly in the original Red back in the day. Also, while the entire arguement is stupid because none of us had anything to do with actually making the game or Gyarados, it is my opinion that it is not Dragon type because it would be fairly unbalancing. Gyarados is an incredibly powerful Pokemon and has been in my main line up in every game, it is also very easy to get, get a Magikarp and level it up, on the other hand I recall spending quite alot of time trying to catch a Dratini in the Safari Zone, that was around level 15 as I recall, and then I had to level it up alot to even make it useful to me. Even a Dragonair's stat's are pitiful compared to a Gyarados, training up 40 levels just to make something useful to me when I could be training things already useful is annoying. Lowlandlord 11:49, 9 March 2008 (UTC)
: Also consider that there were very few Dragons in the original games, 3, all in the same family, Dratini, Dragonair and Dragonite. They obviously wanted to make them very rare and unique. Lowlandlord 12:43, 9 March 2008 (UTC)
When did Gyarados become a common pokemon?
After playing through the sinnoh generation games, I noticed that gyarados started to appear more often as the game went on. In fact, pretty much any trainer with a fishing rod had a gyarados on their team. There are 29 gyarados in the game owned by trainers as far as I counted including the routes, victory road, and gyms. In past games, gyarados was a power house (and still is), but you would only battle one when fighting the elite four or strong trainers on victory road. It just seems strange that one of the strongest Pokémon in the games became so common with trainers. Route 213 has a total of 5 gyarados you have to battle. What happened? Darkcloud1111 18:52, 2 August 2008 (UTC)Darkcloud1111
:I could have sworn I have fought a fisherman or someone swimming in a water route that has a Gyarados in Ruby or Emerald. Yes, Gyarados is indeed strong, but don't forget that Magikarp is a very common Pokémon and will evolve at a low level (20 to be exact) so there is no surprise to be that several trainers have it. Besides, thunder can beat it easily. TheBlazikenMaster 19:25, 2 August 2008 (UTC)
::Well, Gyarados is still easy to defeat with thunder. Yeah, D/P is supposed to be harder than the previous games. In the part where it says that its Flying Type may be a reference to the karp kites, wouldn't it make more sense to say that it's a reference to Chinese dragon kites?
this should really be in the trivia, Gyrados was origonally intended to be a dragon type rather than a flying type but due to its typing and the only gen I dragon type move being a set damage move gyrados woukd have had no weakness so they changed it to a flying type Piexd

:It's unlikely that Gyarados was "originally" intended to be a Dragon-type, since Dragon type seems to have been a late addition to the original Pokémon games. Heck, Gyarados might have even been programmed into the game (as a Water/Flying-type) before the Dragon type itself. If you look at how the type chart in Red/Green/Blue is programmed (using a hex editor and one of the ROMs), every weakness/resistance related to the Dragon type is crammed in at the very end. Fire/Water/Electric/Grass being not very effective vs. Dragon and Ice/Dragon being super effective are the very last entries in the type weakness/resistance data section, rather than being programmed in earlier (such as in the section where they have every Fire weak/resist listed, then every Water, and so on.)
: You'll probably never get an official statement saying "Dragon was a last-minute addition" (though I could be wrong, they have admitted that Mew was basically stuck into the first empty Pokémon data slot at the last second before release! XD), but the evidence for it is right there in the game. That's probably why Gyarados was never Water/Dragon, more so than "it wouldn't have any weaknesses." I mean, Psychic-types essentially had no weaknesses in the 1st-gen games due to how weak Bug attacks were back then, and if the Ghost-types weren't part-Poison they would only take "super effective" damage from Lick of all things. --FnrrfYgmSchnish (talk) 23:02, 10 July 2013 (UTC)

:I could have sworn I have fought a fisherman or someone swimming in a water route that has a Gyarados in Ruby or Emerald.

"The most spectacular behavior of the Charizard occurs during the breeding season. In the wild, a male in control of a territory will send blasts of fire-breath into the sky. This is a signal to females and rivals alike that the resident male is fit, strong, and confident enough to use his fire for a mere display. When a female accepts the male, the two fly high into the sky, lock talons and plummet into a dizzying dive. They break apart only a few meters from the ground, combining the passion of mating with the thrill of freefall. After the female lays her eggs, the two parents take turns guarding them and keeping them warm with their flame."
How is it fail? I did just say that not all Pokemon are introduced in the next generation following when they were designed... The same is true for Trapinch, which was originally intended to be the pre-evolution of Charizard, but was discarded and reintroduced later on as a Bug type.
:The thing is, they said so in an interview that Shellos and Gastrodon were initially to be in Gen III. Nothing at all indicates Trapinch is related in any way to Charizard, especially considering the fact that, as the starters, it's highly likely they were among the first evolutionary lines finalized. Pokémon Red and Green came out in 1996, and were being worked on for six whole years beforehand. Ruby and Sapphire came out in 2003. Sure, there's possibility that maybe Trapinch was intended for Gen I, but there's possibility Ambipom was too. There's possibility that Mewthree really exists, and that Missingno. is really a SUPER HYPER LEGENDARYYYYYY. Except not. We didn't even acknowledge Giratina as part of the dragon trio until shortly before Platinum.
I was just thinking that th "noby" part of it's name may be a corruption of the word nobility. It makes a connection with the general theme of royalty in this family of Pokémon. At the very least it makes as much sense as the canopy theory above. --EpicShadow 21:55, 15 September 2010 (UTC)
In the anime
Beautifly first appeared in a picture as a Wurmple in A Trainer and Child Reunion!. Aaron explains that when he was younger, he loved going in the forest. One day he climbed up the tallest tree in the forest, but then, it was too tall to climb down. A wild Wurmple helped him climb down the tree and they then became best friends since then. However, Aaron lost his temper at it when they lost a battle, claiming that Wurmple was too weak, and he left Wurmple at the park. Aaron began to regret doing this and then went back to the park at night to see if Wurmple was still there, but it wasn't. Aaron regrets doing this.

In the same episode, when Aaron and the others' Pokémon were stolen by Team Rocket near the tree where they met, it came to their rescue in its fully evolved form by using SolarBeam. They were unsure where the attack came from until Beautifly appeared. After looking at it, Aaron realized that it was his Wurmple. It just wanted to be more powerful for Aaron, so Wurmple evolved into Silcoon, then Beautifly. It then remained with Aaron and the rest of his Pokémon.

In Aiding the Enemy!, Beautifly, along with Aaron and his Drapion, were seen again on the television at a Pokémon Center, battling Cynthia's Cynthia and Gastrodon. * Aaron does not possess a Beautifly in Platinum, but this episode first aired after Platinum's Japanese release. This is similar to the case of Cynthia, which also premiered after the release of Platinum despite being replaced with Togekiss.
* Oddly, Beautifly's wings in the anime suggest that it is a female, however, in the games, it is a male.
A rival (Japanese: ライバル rival) is one of the main characters in the Pokémon games that is well known to the protagonist and has similar skills, goals and achievements. Rival characters appear frequently during the hero's quest, having a role in several of the games' events, and often challenges him or her in battles. Defeating a rival may be a primary or necessary goal of said character.

In the games
In the main series, a rival is a recurring opponent to the player throughout the game. This class of characters has appeared beginning in Generation I, and in every main series game since. Typically, rivals will be met by the player early in the game, usually around the time the player receives their starter Pokémon. In most games, the rival will also obtain a starter Pokémon, and will usually participate in the player's first Pokémon battle against a Trainer. From then on, rivals will appear frequently throughout the player's journey, always being one step ahead of the player as the player moves through the region, meeting and battling the player at various points in the game with a progressively stronger and diversified party. Usually they must be defeated in order to continue the game; the most important of these battles happening either right before or during the player's challenge to the Elite Four. After the defeat of the Elite Four and the Pokémon Champion, the rival can usually be battled at the player's leisure, but only at certain times with increasingly powerful Pokémon. More often than not, they will have the starter Pokémon of their home region that weakens the one the player chose at the beginning of the game, though Wally, Bel, and Blue in Pokémon Yellow are exceptions.

The following are the characters considered to be rivals in the games. It should be noted, though, that only Blue and Silver have ever received the Rival trainer class; all others have been referred to as Pokémon Trainers.
In the manga
In the Pokémon Adventures manga
section
In Pokémon Adventures, Red's first rivalry blossomed when, just as their game counterparts did, he and Blue were each given the first two Pokédex, as well as starter Pokémon to compliment their already growing parties (somewhat unlike in the games). Red received Bulbasaur, while Blue acquired the starter that weakens his, and both times his Charmander evolved before Red's. As would become a tradition in the manga, Green, hearing of these two fellow Pallet Town Trainers' big send offs on journeys, stole a Squirtle (weakened by Red's) and proved to be a somewhat irritating obstacle for Red at times, stealing two of his badges and shrewdly taking his Moon Stone for later use before using the boy as a pawn to gather the seven known badges at the time to create Zapmolcuno (not knowing at the time that it would create a three-headed bird monster, a kind which she fears above all else). She also competed in the Pokémon League after Red's excursions in the Viridian Gym against Giovanni, as well as his capture of Mewtwo. She finally faced the then-disguised Professor in the semi-finals, but after her phobia of bird Pokémon was exploited, she lost, and after Oak's forfeit, Red defeated his rival in the final match.

Yellow, who took over as the protagonist two years later, had no real rival, but as both she and Lance of the Elite Four had the psychic healing powers of Viridian Forest, he would most closely match this description.

One year later, the tradition of the rival character acquiring a starter that weakens the protagonist's would again be revisited when Silver steals his Totodile while Gold took a Cyndaquil. Once again, the rival would evolve his starter before the boy when his Totodile became a Croconaw before Gold's evolved to Quilava, but after they were horribly defeated and narrowly saved by Entei, they would fall into a coma lasting for several weeks, during which a third protagonist, Crystal, is given a Chikorita, the last remaining starter (along with the final Pokédex), and it too evolved to a Bayleef. The three then were reunited in the Whirl Islands, and evolved to the final stages simultaneously.

Years after the Masked Man's defeat, Ruby and Sapphire would be given opposite starters, but unlike before (possibly attributed to the fact that Sapphire is female), Ruby would now acquire a Mudkip and Sapphire would be given the disadvantaged Torchic. Both evolved to their final stage similarly, though again the rival of the main playable character, Ruby, would evolve hers first both times.

Ironically, Treecko would again meet the fate of being partnered after its chums when it at last becomes Grovyle with Wally, and is revealed to have been smuggled into the Battle Factory after evolving to its final stage in the wild. As originally intended, it ended up with Emerald.

The protagonists for the Diamond & Pearl received the same type starters as the RGB seniors years before, when Diamond (based on Lucas) ended up with a Turtwig, Pearl (based on the rival character) with a Chimchar, and Platinum (based on Dawn) was given a Piplup. However, unlike the first protagonists, their starters evolved almost exactly at the same time, with Diamond and Pearl's starters evolving simultaneously both times.

Trivia
* Ash has at least one species of Pokémon each of his major rivals own. Gary captured a Krabby, Paul uses a Torterra and Gliscor, Barry uses a Staraptor and Heracross, and Shooti uses a Snivy.
* Almost all of the rivals in the games are from the protagonist's hometown. Only Silver and Wally come from other places, with Silver's hometown being unknown and Wally hailing from Petalburg City.
