An inexperienced young Trainer mistakenly scares off his own Farfetch'd. Ash and friends are happy to help, but will have to find it before Team Rocket, their stomachs as empty as their piggy bank, can get their hands on this savory Pokémon.

==Plot==
{{an|Brock}}, with a map in hand, guides {{Ash}} and {{an|Misty}} through the [[Ilex Forest]]. The group soon comes across a boy commanding his {{p|Farfetch'd}} to use "cutting attack", but Farfetch'd [[obedience|disregards]] its {{pkmn|Trainer}} completely. Ash steps in and informs the boy that "{{m|Cut}} attack" is the correct name. The embarrassed boy then tells Farfetch'd to use "Cut", but even so, Farfetch'd refuses to obey. The boy, who introduces himself as {{OBP|Sylvester|EP145}}, explains that he is a beginning Trainer and sometimes has trouble remembering the names of attacks. He wants to be able to make "purifying [[charcoal]]" like his father does. Brock explains to Ash and Misty that purifying charcoal is {{wp|Charcoal|burnt wood used for fuel}} that can also purify water and air. The Ilex Forest is world-famous for its purified charcoal; in fact, Brock even uses it for a recipe he calls "Brock's Rockin' Rice". Sylvester says that he needs to teach Farfetch'd how to cut wood into perfect blocks. Farfetch'd, however, doesn't look happy to be working with Sylvester. It appears to think very little of its Trainer. Ash can empathize with Sylvester and admits that he and {{AP|Pikachu}} initially struggled to work together before they became best friends. Sylvester and Farfetch'd are persuaded by Ash's words to try again.

At the local [[Pokémon Center]], Ash reports to {{an|Professor Oak}} that he has [[EP143|safely delivered]] the [[GS Ball]] to [[Kurt]] in [[Azalea Town]]. Ash also tells Oak of his [[Lure Ball]], which he received from Kurt as a gift, and his {{Badge|Hive}}, which he [[EP144|won]] from [[Bugsy]], the [[Gym Leader]]. [[Ash's Muk]], {{AP|Kingler}}, {{AP|Snorlax}}, and {{AP|Tauros}} squeeze into the screen to wish Ash luck and the video call ends. Ash then sits down with his friends and learns that [[Goldenrod City]] is the location of the next Gym. Suddenly, Sylvester runs into the Center and asks [[Nurse Joy]] if she has seen his Farfetch'd; apparently, it has run away after Sylvester forgot a few attack names again. Nurse Joy suggests looking for Farfetch'd at [[Yosaku|his father]]'s house, since Farfetch'd went there the previous time it ran away. Ash cheers up the despondent Sylvester by volunteering to accompany him to his house, and to search the forest if Farfetch'd cannot be found there.

At Sylvester's house, his father [[Yosaku]] works alongside his {{p|Magmar}} at a hearth to make purifying charcoal. Yosaku receives the news that Farfetch'd has run away again and begins berating his son for being such a bad Trainer. Ash, feeling sorry for Sylvester, steps in and tells Yosaku that his son is trying his best and should not be pushed so hard. Sylvester's father is not impressed; he orders his son and his new friends out into the forest to look for Farfetch'd. Meanwhile, as {{TRT}} continues to trudge through the forest, {{MTR}} suddenly smells food and leads his teammates to a [[Ilex Forest shrine|forest shrine]] with some offerings. [[Jessie]] and Meowth eat the buns before [[James]] can get a bite. Then, Farfetch'd walks out from behind a bush, unaware of Team Rocket. The trio corners the valuable Pokémon and decides to capture and sell it, using the money to buy lots of food.

Elsewhere, Ash and the others soon reach the shrine, dedicated to the {{p|Celebi|spirit that watches over the forest}}, and try to call out to Farfetch'd, to no avail. They decide to use all of their Pokémon, minus [[Misty's Goldeen]] and {{TP|Misty|Staryu}}, to search for Farfetch'd. Brock, however, is forced to recall his {{TP|Brock|Pineco}} before it {{m|Self-Destruct}}s. Though Sylvester is concerned by Ash's Pokémon who seem to be too preoccupied to help with the search. Just as Misty is about to scold Ash for his misbehaving Pokémon, she spots her {{TP|Misty|Psyduck}} fast asleep on {{TP|Misty|Poliwag}}'s tail. The Pokémon manage to organize themselves and the group agrees to meet back at the shrine within the next hour before splitting off to search for Farfetch'd.

Meanwhile, Farfetch'd momentarily evades Team Rocket by flying up on a tree branch, cutting several smaller branches with its leek, and causing them to fall on Team Rocket's heads. Jessie tosses Meowth upwards in frustration, but Farfetch'd easily hits him on the head, sending Meowth back down on Jessie's own head. Jessie then sends out her {{TP|Jessie|Arbok}} and {{TP|Jessie|Lickitung}}; Farfetch'd blocks Arbok's {{m|Poison Sting}} with its leek. Arbok dives for the leek, but misses. Finally, Lickitung uses its giant tongue to grab the leek before Jessie snatches the leek from it. Without its leek, Farfetch'd tries to run away, but Meowth captures it with a lasso. With Farfetch'd now secured in a net, James tries to eat the leek, but Jessie swipes it away and Meowth reminds him that the leek will make Farfetch'd complete, meaning more money could be made.

{{AP|Heracross}} spots Team Rocket with Farfetch'd and reports back to Ash. Having been discovered, Team Rocket performs their {{motto}} for Ash and Sylvester. Jessie sends out Arbok and Lickitung while Meowth kicks at Sylvester, allowing the trio to make a run for it. However, {{AP|Bulbasaur}} and {{AP|Chikorita}} use {{m|Razor Leaf}} to cut the bag, freeing Farfetch'd. Before it can fly back to Sylvester, though, Farfetch'd is grabbed by Lickitung. James sends out his {{TP|James|Weezing}} and {{TP|James|Victreebel}}, and orders the former to fire {{m|Sludge}} at Ash and his Pokémon, immobilizing them. As Arbok's Poison Sting heads straight for the helpless group, [[Brock's Onix]] erupts out of the ground and blocks the attack. Brock and Misty hurry towards them with their Pokémon, and Misty has Poliwag wash away the Sludge attack with its {{m|Water Gun}}. Weezing and Victreebel then use {{m|Smokescreen}} and Razor Leaf respectively, but Ash orders {{AP|Squirtle}} to use {{m|Hydro Pump}} to blow away Weezing's smoke. While Ash's Pokémon attack together, Sylvester expresses his wish to work with Farfetch'd the way Ash works with his Pokémon. Brock explains that Ash's [[Party|team]] acts with one mind. Heracross {{m|Tackle}}s Team Rocket, sending the leek spinning up in the air. Jessie and Sylvester both dive for it, and Sylvester grabs it. This causes Farfetch'd to realize that he isn't such a bad Trainer after all. Sylvester promptly throws the leek to Farfetch'd, who goes onto free itself from Lickitung's grasp with a powerful {{m|Peck}}. In a last-ditch attempt, Team Rocket dives toward Farfetch'd, but Sylvester orders Farfetch'd to use {{m|Fury Attack}}, which leaves Team Rocket completely worn out. Before they can run far, Farfetch'd uses Cut to down two big trees in front of Team Rocket's path. Then, Ash has Pikachu use {{m|Thunderbolt}}, sending Team Rocket blasting off.

Ash congratulates Sylvester for getting Farfetch'd to use Cut, and Misty and Brock comment on how well the pair worked as a team. Encouraged by Ash and the gang, Sylvester asks Farfetch'd to cut one of the trees into blocks for charcoal. After pausing to orient itself, like a true Cutting master, Farfetch'd executes a series of slashes, creating several perfectly-shaped blocks of wood. Later, Sylvester's father admits that he is proud of his son's growth. Yosaku also gives Ash and his friends some charcoal as a show of his gratitude. The group says their goodbyes before setting off for Goldenrod City.

* The plot of this episode, focused around recovering a lost Farfetch'd in Ilex Forest for a charcoal maker's son, appears to be based around a similar event in the games. Both also feature the move Cut.
* In the Japanese version, {{OBP|Sylvester|EP145}} tells {{p|Farfetch'd}} to use 居合い抜き (iainuki) instead of the correct いあいぎり (iaigiri). The former is the Japanese term for quickly drawing one's sword, slashing, and then sheathing the sword, on which the move name いあいぎり is based.

==Blurb==

Near Mr. Coronet, Ash and his friends come across Pokémon Hunter J's goons trying to snag a group of wild Shieldon. Ash is about to come to their rescue, but his old friend and rival Gary gets there first with his Electivire. Once the men are gone, Gary explains that he's here in Sinnoh as part of a project to turn the area into a nature preserve for the Shieldon. Now that J's men are looking to kidnap them, Gary decides to move all the Shieldon to a safer location, and our heroes decide to help.

Pokémon Hunter J's minions aren't about to leave a valuable prize alone, and it's not long before they show up again to capture the Shieldon. Ash is ready to give J's men the battle of their lives, but Gary doesn't want to risk getting into a fight that could injure the Shieldon. Instead, Gary stirs up a Beedrill nest, and the angry Beedrill keep the minions distracted so our heroes can make a getaway.

As Gary and Ash lead the Shieldon on a perilous escape route across nearby cliffs, Pokémon Hunter J figures out where they're headed and shows up on her Salamence to steal the Shieldon herself. Despite Gary and Ash's best efforts to hold her off so Dawn and Brock can get the Pokémon to safety, J still manages to snag one Shieldon and escape. Determined to put a stop to her crimes, Gary and Ash sneak back to her base and bust their way through in order to get Shieldon back. J is about to take them on when she gets word that her original client no longer wants to purchase the Shieldon; with no money on the line, she's no longer interested in the Shieldon and immediately leaves. The Shieldon are safe again, but who knows where J will strike next?

==Plot==
At [[Mount Coronet]], {{Ash}}, {{an|Dawn}}, and {{an|Brock}} encounter a {{p|Shieldon}}. Just then, a vehicle containing [[J's henchmen]] appears. Ash tells his {{AP|Pikachu}} to use {{m|Thunderbolt}}. The henchman responds by sending {{p|Golbat}} which avoids Pikachu's attack and hits him with {{m|Wing Attack}}.

Suddenly, {{Gary}} appears with his {{TP|Gary|Electivire}}, who hits J's henchmen with an {{type|Electric}} attack. Electivire picks up Shieldon and runs away along with Gary and the group. As they are running, Brock explains to Dawn that Gary was a [[rival]] of Ash’s. They soon arrive at a hidden area, where they are greeted by other wild Shieldon. Gary explains that he is part of a project that aims to make a part of Mt. Coronet a Pokémon preserve. He gets his laptop out of his [[bag|backpack]] and contacts [[Professor Rowan]], telling him about the Pokémon hunters. The Professor orders Gary to escort the Shieldon to a specified location, depicted on a digital map, where they will meet up. Ash offers to help and Gary agrees, thanking him.

Meanwhile, {{TRT}} plots their revenge on J by stealing her collection of Pokémon. Suddenly, the same vehicle appears, and Electivire picks the Shieldon up and rushes off with them into the forest. Gary sends out his {{TP|Gary|Blastoise}}, which uses {{m|Water Gun}} on the vehicle. Pikachu uses Thunderbolt and stops the vehicle. The same henchman from earlier emerges and sends out Golbat, which knocks out Blastoise. Gary sends out {{TP|Gary|Umbreon}} which uses {{m|Sand Attack}} on Golbat. It responds by using {{m|Air Cutter}}, but Umbreon dodges the attack which instead hits a tree, causing a swarm of angry {{p|Beedrill}} to come out. Gary [[recall]]s Umbreon and Blastoise, and the Beedrill head for the henchmen while the group escapes.

Later, J talks with a client about the Shieldon and she gives instructions to move on out and surround the area. Ash and the group are forced to hide among the shrubs from the henchmen. Ash suggests they attack, but Gary calls this idea reckless and suggests they focus on protecting the Shieldon. Gary takes his laptop out to plan a new route. They traverse a steep mountain trail by walking along the rock face. One of the Shieldon panics and almost falls down dragging the others with it before Ash quickly grabs them by their rope. With the help of the others, they manage to pull the Shieldon back up.

Meanwhile, Team Rocket is sneaking into J's base when a surveillance camera spots them. They start to recite their {{motto}}, but the henchman interrupts when he activates some trap walls. J, meanwhile, flies down on her {{TP|J|Salamence}} and greets her goons on the ground. From the base, one of her henchmen alerts J through her headset that a vehicle, carrying Professor Rowan and his lab assistants, has been spotted near Mt. Coronet. J deduces that it must be an arranged meeting, and promptly flies over to the vicinity. Having just received an update from Rowan that he and [[Officer Jenny]] are close by, Gary is taken by surprise to see Hunter J. She attempts to use her capture device but Pikachu stops her with {{m|Iron Tail}}. She responds by sending out {{TP|J|Drapion}} which uses {{m|Cross Poison}} on Pikachu. Gary sends out Blastoise again which uses {{m|Hydro Cannon}}, but Salamence counters with {{m|Hyper Beam}}. As Dawn and Brock are escaping with the Shieldon, one of the Pokémon slips and falls, leaving it exposed to J, who uses her capture device on it. After witnessing this, Ash orders Pikachu to use Thunderbolt but Drapion blocks it. J orders Drapion to use {{m|Pin Missile}} and Salamence to use Hyper Beam. Ash responds by ordering Pikachu to use Thunderbolt while Gary has Blastoise use {{m|Hydro Pump}}, but J's Pokémon's attacks overwhelm theirs.

Next, Brock, Dawn, and the Shieldon meet up with Professor Rowan, his assistants, and Officer Jenny. They inform the Professor that one of the Shieldon was captured by J. Meanwhile, J takes possession of the captured Shieldon and enters the vehicle while Ash and Gary hold onto the undercarriage. The vehicle arrives at the base, and Ash sends out {{AP|Staravia}} which flies away, unseen by J, to find the others. The vehicle enters the base while J's client in a helicopter is seen preparing to land. Inside the base, Ash and Gary use their Pokémon to sabotage the base freeing Team Rocket in the process. An explosion occurs and Ash jumps out of the smoke grabbing Shieldon and unfreezing it. As J prepares to call out one of her Pokémon, the client informs her the deal is off to avoid being arrested, as Officer Jenny is nearby. J and her henchmen also withdraw. Rowan, Jenny, Brock, and Dawn arrive. Officer Jenny is glad the Shieldon are now safe and adds that she will launch a full investigation into Hunter J. Gary thanks Ash for his help, telling him that they'll be friends to the end. Later, the group says goodbye to Gary, Jenny, and Rowan as they depart on their road.

Our heroes must help prepare an insecure Bellossom dance troupe for their upcoming exhibition—a chore that's further complicated when Team Rocket attempts to steal the show with their raucous act.

==Plot==
{{Ash}} and {{ashfr}} make it out of a forest and arrive in [[Florando]]. As they enter the city, a local girl hands them a pamphlet advertising Florando's annual [[Pokémon Exhibition]], an outdoor performance festival. Excited, the trio makes their way to a giant square where the exhibition is held, and are particularly interested by a pair of acrobatic and dancing {{p|Bellossom}}. One of the Bellossom is asked to do a trick, but it fails to complete it and lands in Ash's arms, knocking him to the ground. The girl commanding the Bellossom rushes over to Ash, asking him if he is alright. He says he is and hands Bellossom back to her.

Over some drinks, the girl introduces herself as [[Bailey]] and her two Bellossom as Bella and Belle, and thanks Ash for catching her Bellossom. After Ash and his friends thank her for the show, Ash asks Bailey if they are going to perform the same trick tomorrow at the show. Bailey says it was their intent, but reveals that Bella is having trouble performing her special move.

Meanwhile, {{TRT}} enters the exhibition with the hopes of making money. They quickly set up a stage and use {{MTR}}'s rare gift of speech to attract a crowd. People start to gather around, but Meowth gets stage fright and disappoints the audience. A frustrated [[Jessie]] gives Meowth some jokes to tell and orders him to make the people laugh. Meowth does so, surprising the crowd, but all of the jokes are terrible and the crowd starts booing and leaving. Jessie tries telling them it is not a free show, but the crowd refuses to pay out of disappointment from Meowth's performance. [[James]] whispers a joke to Meowth in desperation and Meowth tells it, but he messes it up, and the last of the onlookers leave. Jessie says that she and James could have done better with a dancing routine, but their enthusiasm worries Meowth.

Later, Team Rocket commandeers a bulldozer and drives through Florando's streets, performing their {{motto}}. Ash is about to blast them off using {{AP|Pikachu}}, but Bailey and the other performers want to do it themselves; Team Rocket accepts their challenge. A performer uses his {{p|Alakazam}}'s {{m|Psychic}} to knock them off their feet. Jessie and James quickly stand up and send out {{TP|Jessie|Arbok}} and {{TP|James|Victreebel}}. Bailey uses her two Bellossom and has them dodge the attacks using their dancing moves before spraying Team Rocket with {{m|Sleep Powder}}, forcing the trio to quickly leave. The crowd mistakes the events for a performance {{pkmn|battle}} and gives Bailey a round of applause. Later, as Team Rocket mopes about their latest defeat, they find a flyer advertising the Florando Exhibition, and the trio decides to steal all of the performing Pokémon.

Meanwhile, at Bailey's van, her Bellossom play with Pikachu and {{TP|Misty|Togepi}} while Ash and his friends talk things over with Bailey, who says that her dream is to be the best performer ever. Ash wants to know how her Bellossom were able to dodge Team Rocket's attacks, and Bailey says that dancing is similar to battling because of the movement of the Pokémon's feet. She suggests that Ash and his friends should watch her practice. The next day, Bailey teaches Bellossom's routine to Pikachu so he can use it in battle. After a shaky start, Pikachu proves to be a natural. Bailey starts practicing her special move, "Bell-oop-de-loop", but again it fails. As a result, Bailey decides not to do it in the show.

The Florando Exhibition begins, with Team Rocket posing as the show's announcers, with the real ones tied up and held backstage. They bring all of the contestants and their Pokémon onstage, where Meowth drops a net from above and steals the performing Pokémon. Team Rocket starts to leave in their [[Team Rocket's mechas|Meowth balloon]], but Ash has {{AP|Heracross}} throw Pikachu into the air. Pikachu soars past the trio, grabs the balloon, and uses {{m|Thunderbolt}} to pop it. Ash, his friends, and Bailey rush to the crash-site nearby, but Jessie and James are unfazed and call for a battle. Team Rocket sends out Victreebel, who latches onto James's head, and Arbok.

Thanks to Bailey's training, Pikachu is able to dodge Arbok's {{m|Poison Sting}} and Victreebel's {{m|Take Down}} with ease. As the two try to use {{m|Tackle}}, Pikachu jumps up, causing Arbok and Victreebel to collide into each other. At James's insistence, Victreebel uses {{m|Wrap}} to grab Pikachu's feet, and Arbok tries to use {{m|Bite}}. However, Bailey is able to free Belle and Bella during the chaos, and tells them to use their special move. Their move is a success and the Bellossom successfully hit Arbok out of the way. Jessie recalls Arbok before Pikachu lands a Thunderbolt on Victreebel. Next, Bellossom use their "Tornado Twister" dance move, which sends Team Rocket blasting off. The other performers are reunited with their Pokémon, and the Florando Exhibition goes on. Bailey has Belle and Bella perform the "Bell-oop-de-Loop" successfully onstage.

Poncho is a {{p|Diglett}} rancher, meaning he uses Diglett to round up different Pokémon. When {{Ash}} and {{ashfr}} met him, he was trying to round up multiple {{p|Voltorb}} and {{p|Electrode}} who had been scaring people away from a small town. Poncho would use his Diglett to {{m|dig}} tunnels underneath the Pokémon that lead to another island, where the Voltorb and Electrode could live in peace without people.

Unfortunately for Poncho, the mayor felt that he was taking too long in removing the Electrode, so she hired {{TRT}} to get rid of them instead. Team Rocket's solution was to force the Electrode to use {{m|Self-Destruct}} and {{m|Explosion}}, and then taking them all for themselves.

Angered, Poncho sent out his {{p|Dugtrio}}, which helped get rid of Team Rocket, and, along with all his Diglett, move the remaining Electrode to the island. With that, Poncho had successfully moved all the Electrode away from the town, and it was allowed to reopen once again. As a result, the mayor rehired (and promoted) him and gave the Diglett rancher the key to the city.

==Blurb==

While riding around the Orange Islands on his Lapras, Ash finds a mysterious message in a bottle, which leads the gang on a new adventure. Ash, Misty and Tracey travel to Sunburst Island, which is famous for its artists and glassblowers. They meet a struggling young shopkeeper who's seeking inspiration from a legendary crystal Onix. Having been unable to find this special Pokémon, the shopkeeper turns to our heroes. With Tracey and his observational Pokémon on board, they set out to fire up a new friend's creative drive!

==Plot==
While riding around the [[Orange Islands]] on his {{AP|Lapras}}, {{Ash}} finds a message in a bottle from [[Marissa]] of [[Sunburst Island]], who is looking for someone who knows about a Pokémon called the [[Crystal Onix]], which {{Tracey}} is aware of. Ash and {{ashfr}} travel to Sunburst Island, where they overhear an argument between a rival shopkeeper and a young girl, and go to intervene. The young girl is revealed to be Marissa. They then meet her older brother, a struggling young shopkeeper named {{OBP|Mateo|EP087}}, who is seeking inspiration from the legendary Crystal Onix. He smashes one of his Pokémon statues out of frustration and complains they are lifeless compared to [[Mateo and Marissa's grandfather|his grandfather]]'s works. Mateo tells the group that his grandfather once saw the actual Crystal Onix and shows them his grandfather's Crystal Onix statue. Ash and his friends decide to help him in his search.

{{TRT}} arrives on Sunburst Island as well, and are in awe of the glass shops. [[Jessie]] and [[James]] start picking up various pieces and admiring them. {{MTR}} yells at them to knock it off, causing Jessie and James to break the glass items they were holding. The shopkeeper hears this, and tells them about the "You break it, you bought it" rule before he puts them to work, since they don't have the money to pay him back for the items they ruined. While they are chopping and carrying wood, they overhear the shop owner and another employee mocking Mateo for searching for the Crystal Onix. Team Rocket becomes interested and they leave in search of it.

Tracey sends out {{TP|Tracey|Venonat}} to help find the Crystal Onix. Mateo holds up the Crystal Onix statue and Venonat scans the image. The group is led to a series of rocks that are shaped like the body of an Onix. Disappointed, Tracey recalls Venonat and sends out {{TP|Tracey|Marill}}, noting that its large and sensitive ears may prove useful. Tracey plays Marill a recording of Onix's cry and Marill quickly detects something. It leads them to a body of water and points across the water to a small island with a cave. The water begins to part, revealing a land-bridge. However, the group suddenly falls into one of Team Rocket's pitfall traps. After reciting their {{motto}}, Team Rocket runs off to find the Crystal Onix. Ash and his friends climb out of the hole and run after them. Once they get to the opening of the cave, they discover Team Rocket, caught in their own traps. Misty refuses to help them and they all enter the cave by themselves.

At the end of the cave, they come across a lake. Marill dives in and then, followed by the Crystal Onix. Mateo calls on his {{p|Cloyster}}, thinking it has the type advantage. However, its {{m|Water Gun}} attacks prove to be useless. The Crystal Onix retaliates and knocks Cloyster out with one headbutt. Just then, Team Rocket shows up, having freed themselves from their traps. Jessie and James send out {{TP|Jessie|Arbok}} and {{TP|James|Victreebel}} in an attempt to catch the Crystal Onix, while Ash and Misty send out {{AP|Pikachu}} and {{TP|Misty|Staryu}} to counterattack. Staryu and Pikachu attack Team Rocket, then the Crystal Onix smacks them into a blastoff.

Seeing as Cloyster's {{t|Water}} attacks proved to be useless against the Crystal Onix, Mateo sends out his {{p|Charmeleon}}. It dodges a {{m|Rock Throw}} and uses {{m|Flamethrower}}, which engulfs the Crystal Onix in flames. Onix glows a brilliant red and Charmeleon fires its {{m|Fire Spin}}{{tt|*|Dub incorrectly referred to this as Ember}} attack. Mateo and the Crystal Onix then stare at each other. At that moment, Mateo sees [[wikipedia:Droste effect|duplicates of himself]] in Onix's glass facets. The Onix then faints and falls into the water. Ash calls out for Mateo to catch it, but Mateo says he doesn't need to, since he has found inspiration through the Crystal Onix. It promptly dives back into the water. Back at his shop, Mateo and Charmeleon are busy making a glass figurine while Marissa is happy to see her brother working again. Ash and his friends wave goodbye to Mateo and Marissa, wishing the pair all the best with their glass shop. On their trek to the water, Ash admires Mateo's handcrafted and lifelike glass Pikachu sculpture.

Ritchie first appeared in ''[[EP078|A Friend In Deed]]'' and quickly befriended his fellow [[Indigo Plateau Conference]] competitor, [[Ash Ketchum]], in an elevator. When the elevator went out, he plugged in a device to [[Ash's Pikachu]] and got the elevator running again. Ritchie met up with Ash again outside. While {{TRT}} had {{pkmn|Trainer}}s put in their [[Poké Ball]]s in a sack, Ritchie discovered their scheme and he and Ash went after them. While Ash and Ritchie chase Team Rocket he runs to recklessly causing Ritchie to stop Ash from going over a cliff after which Ash pushes him to which he apologizes to Ritchie later on. The two were unable to catch up to Team Rocket and camped out until the next day. Ritchie saw tire tracks and led them to Team Rocket's van. When he went inside, he was spotted by Team Rocket and the trio trapped him and Ash in the van. They were able to escape with the Poké Balls retrieved from Team Rocket.

Their friendship led to problems in ''[[EP079|Friend or Foe Alike]]'', since the two were pitted against each other in the next round. Ritchie waited for Ash on the battlefield even though Ash was unable to get there right away due to Team Rocket's meddling. Their match began when Ash was able to finally arrive. Ritchie won the match, since at the very end [[Ash's Charizard]] refused to fight [[Sparky]] and took a nap on the battlefield instead. Even though he lost in the next match to [[Assunta]], Ritchie made it to the Top 8 position in the League.

Sometime after the League and when Ash and {{ashfr}} went to [[Johto]], Ritchie became fascinated with a mysterious {{OBP|Pokémon|species}} that can be found [[Whirl Islands]], which turned out to be a {{an|Lugia}}.

Ritchie met up with Ash and friends again on [[Ogi Isle]], starting in ''[[EP220|The Mystery is History]]''. After spotting a [[Silver (Lugia)|baby Lugia]] named Silver with {{jo|Oliver}}, [[Butch]] and [[Cassidy]] attacked with their Pokémon and Ritchie and Ash defended Silver with their Pokémon. Their actions caused Butch and Cassidy to retreat until later when a submarine was dispatched to capture Silver.

In ''[[EP221|A Parent Trapped!]]'', Ritchie told the parent Lugia about what happened to Silver which caused it to briefly attack them. Ritchie and the group later found Silver in a cage on a base. Ritchie and Ash battled Butch and Cassidy in an attempt to stall them. They were badly beaten and the parent Lugia was captured.

In ''[[EP222|A Promise is a Promise]]'', Ritchie and the group was freed from a cage by Oliver. Ritchie and Ash took on Butch, Cassidy, and some {{tc|Team Rocket Grunt}}s with their Pokémon and easily swept through them. They went to the room where Silver was being held, but were stopped by [[Dr. Namba]]. Ritchie and Ash battled him with their Pikachu. Ritchie was also able to destroy the controller of the rage machine that was powering Dr. Namba's {{p|Electabuzz}}, defeat the Team Rocket scientist and take Silver away from him. With both Lugia reunited, Ritchie remained on the island with Oliver, to continue exploring the Whirl Islands, while Ash and his friends departed to [[Olivine City]].

Ritchie visited [[Professor Oak's Laboratory]] in ''[[HS08|Oaknapped!]]''. He and {{Tracey}} found out that {{an|Professor Oak}} had disappeared from the {{an|Seafoam Island}} TV station where he was supposed to have his live TV appearance. They later found him in an abandoned warehouse with the help of Ritchie's {{p|Taillow}}, Rose. They battled Butch and Cassidy and when [[Tracey's Scyther]] was beaten by Butch's {{p|Mightyena}}, Ritchie took care of the two Team Rocket agents and won. Professor Oak was grateful and even asked Ritchie to come back to [[Pallet Town]] to help install a security system in his lab.

In ''[[HS13|Celebi and Joy!]]'', Ritchie was passing through [[Marion Town]] when he saw some [[Demolition crew|construction workers]] demolishing an old [[Pokémon Center]]. He sent out [[Zippo]] and [[Sparky]] to prevent them from damaging the Pokémon Center any further, and the resident [[Nurse Joy]]s were grateful. They invited Ritchie inside, revealing the Center's history, including the passing of the elder Nurse Joy's childhood friend {{OBP|Nick|HS13}}. The Center also had an association with {{p|Celebi}}, who later appeared before Ritchie and [[Time travel|took him back in time]]. Ritchie arrived in a forest where he saved a young Nurse Joy from falling off a cliff. He and Nurse Joy then arrived in the Marion Town of the past. Ritchie discovered the same Celebi from before. He also met Nick and [[Nick's father|his father]].

Nurse Joy went missing during a storm, and Ritchie went with Nick to find her. Ritchie soon found Nurse Joy by the Celebi shrine lying down unconscious. Just as a lightning bolt was about to strike, Celebi appeared and protected Ritchie, Nick, and Nurse Joy. The next day, Ritchie went after Nick and his father on Nurse Joy's {{p|Ponyta}} which was the day that a rock slide would have killed them. However, as Ritchie convinced the two to come back to Marion Town to be there for a party held by Nurse Joy, the rock slide that occurred passed right behind Ritchie.

With that done, Ritchie was sent back to the present with the timeline altered. He saw the same construction crew from before, who were now restoring the Pokémon Center instead of demolishing it. Nick was also alive and now the mayor of Marion Town.

Ritchie's final speaking appearance was in ''[[HS18|The Search for the Legend]]'', where he was aboard the [[S.S. Anne]] when he met {{OBP|Silver|HS18}} and a pair of mysterious doctors who were actually Butch and Cassidy. During a pit stop at [[One Island]], he learned more of the trio's plan to see a {{p|Moltres}}, and climbed to the summit of [[Mt. Ember|Mt. Magma]] with them. When Moltres revealed itself the following day, the doctors revealed their true identities, and attempted to nab Moltres. Ritchie and Silver battled together and defeated the duo. After Silver battled with Moltres, Mt. Magma erupted and when he had Silver's {{p|Salamence}} fly him and Ritchie out of there, Moltres flew off. Silver was willing to wait a little longer until Moltres came back. Ritchie parted ways with Silver on a boat while Silver stayed behind on One Island.

In ''[[JN116|Pride of a Champion!]]'', Ritchie appeared in a brief cameo, along with Sparky, watching the [[Masters Eight Tournament]] match between {{an|Lance}} and [[Diantha]] on TV.

Ritchie is a kindhearted and sincere boy. His courageous actions helped him to develop bonds and gain respect from other characters, including {{an|Professor Oak}} and [[Marion Town]]'s [[Nurse Joy]]. He values his friendships, even waiting for {{Ash}} despite his delayed arrival for their [[Indigo Plateau Conference]] match in ''[[EP079|Friend or Foe Alike]]''.

Ritchie balanced out Ash's more reckless approach with his cautious manner in ''[[EP078|A Friend In Deed]]''. He thinks ahead, as seen when he packs extra supplies, and his problem-solving skills lend themselves well to his traveling lifestyle. After his Indigo League loss to [[Assunta]], Ritchie noted that defeats were invaluable and this helped Ash to overcome his own sadness after his loss.

He is passionate about {{OBP|Pokémon|species}}, and like Ash, he dreams of becoming a [[Pokémon Master]]. Ritchie and Ash are often compared to each other, and in ''[[HS08|Oaknapped!]]'', Ritchie joked that he and Ash tend to catch many of the same Pokémon. Ritchie's battling strategy focuses on his Pokémon's stamina, and he uses attacks like [[Zippo]]'s {{m|Flamethrower}} and {{p|Pupitar|Cruise}}'s {{m|Sandstorm}} to repel his opponent's Pokémon away before attacking. Ritchie's Pokémon coincidentally tend to be similar to {{Ash}}'s first captures, either in [[Kanto]] or [[Hoenn]]. Despite this, Ritchie is also seen battling with a few different Pokémon, such as {{p|Pupitar}} and others shown during his [[Full Battle]] with [[Assunta]]. Also, Ritchie's Pokémon tend to be more obedient to their Trainer, largely due to Ritchie being a little more experienced than Ash at that time. [[Zippo]], for example, was shown to be more obedient to Ritchie than other {{p|Charmeleon}} shown in the {{pkmn|animated series}}, such as [[Ash's Charmeleon|Ash's]] and [[Trevor's Charmeleon|Trevor's]].

Ritchie is a character in [[The Electric Tale of Pikachu]]. {{OBP|Ash Ketchum|EToP|Ash}} first met Ritchie in ''[[ET12|Welcome To The Big Leagues]]'' at a diner while noticing that his {{AP|Pikachu|Pikachu (EToP)}} was with Ritchie's Pikachu. Ritchie was also a competitor in the Pokémon League and even though he saw Ash win his match with {{AP|Kingler}}, Ash missed out on his. The next day, Ritchie has moved on from the third round. During the fourth round, he was paired with Ash's rival, {{Gary}}. After Ash defeated [[Jeanette Fisher]], he ran to see if Ritchie won or not, and was surprised to find out that he had actually beaten Gary.

Ritchie was then paired with Ash in the fifth round. They battled with {{p|Butterfree}} and {{AP|Squirtle}} first, which resulted in a tie. The two sent out their Pikachu and tied again. When Ritchie sent out [[Zippo|Charley]] against [[Ash's Charizard]], but his Pokémon was badly hurt by Ash's. Unable to stop his Charizard's violent behavior, Ash was forced to recall it and surrender the match, making Ritchie the winner. Ritchie apologized to Ash for challenging him. Even though Ash felt bad for allowing his Charizard to be uncontrollable, he supported Ritchie on his further matches.

Eri seems to serve as a "big sister" figure of Team Star. When Team Star was created one year and a half prior to the beginning of the [[player character]]'s journey, she helped the other bosses train their Pokémon and acted as a mediator when arguments broke out. Eri is an athlete, and her diligence and experience with personal discipline helps her to lead Team Star's training regimen. The reason why she joined the team in the first place is due to the other students at [[Naranja Academy]]{{sup/9|S}}/[[Uva Academy]]{{sup/9|V}} choosing Eri as the target of their harassment and bullying due to their jealousy after she had become the new class queen; Eri was deemed by her peers as a great Trainer, very athletic, and pretty. Despite the cruel nature of the bullies, Eri shows her soft side by befriending the instigator of the rumors, [[Carmen]]. Carmen was the former queen of the class and started the rumors to reinstate her position, but was instead targeted next by the bullies. Eri helped Carmen by explaining her empathy as a former victim of bullying and inviting Carmen to join Team Star as a grunt. As a result, Carmen began to appreciate Eri's kind nature and accepted Eri's invitation.

[[Atticus]] gave Eri the title, '''the great Infernal Eri''' (Japanese: '''地獄のアイドル''' ''Hellish Idol ''), in a flashback, and Carmen calls her '''Riri''' as a nickname.

When Eri is first encountered guarding the entrance to the [[Caph Squad's Base]], she wants to fight the [[player character]] herself, but has to be convinced by Carmen to defend the squad from the inside. Eri appeared in ''[[PPW03|Take a Breath]]''. [[Hohma]] headed to [[Caph Squad's Base]] in order to interview Eri for a scoop, but instead ended up having a training session with her. When Caph Squad's {{p|Revavroom}} got out of control, Eri stepped forward and calmed the Pokémon down with a [[Lum Berry]], preventing it from causing damage and unknowingly changing Hohma's perception about [[Team Star]].

Despite her intimidating stance, Eri is a kind and friendly person, to the point of putting herself in danger to protect her friends from the Caph Squad and welcoming Hohma without any questions. According to her, it is her friends from Caph Squad who give her strength.
