In order to battle the Gym Leader, Roark, you need to retrieve him from Oreburgh Mine. He can be found on the basement floor, and after he shows you Rock Smash he returns to the Gym and will wait there for you to challenge him. There are two workers for you to battle here and a few items to pick up. You can also find an Onix, which can be a good addition if you can later evolve it into Steelix through trade, but is otherwise probably not worth the effort.
It's now time for your first Gym battle. Oreburgh Gym is pretty straightforward and has no puzzles, though it is possible to take the raised path and avoid the two Trainers present. However, the Trainers are pretty easy, and it's always good to gain some extra money and experience.
Roark leads with a level 12 Geodude which is easily knocked out by any move that is Damage modification against Rock type (e.g. Water, Grass, or Fighting; you should definitely have one). If you don't bring it down, it can use Stealth Rock, which harms Pokémon you switch into battle. His level 12 Onix does have a high Stats stat, so it may take two or three hits unless you are using a Water or Grass-type move, or a Damage modification Special-based attack. Onix has the same moves as Geodude plus Screech, which makes your Stats plummet. Level 14 Cranidos can be a huge problem if you don't outspeed and knock it out very soon. It has a extremely high Stats, plus Headbutt for massive damage and Leer to drop your Stats, making its attacks more damaging. Pursuit is a solid move that can hurt a lot if you switch out Pokémon. However, Cranidos is very fragile, so one or two super-effective hits will bring it down before it can completely destroy your team. Moves like Mega Drain, Mach Punch, Bubble, and Metal Claw work well.

After the battle, Roark gives you the Badge and 76. You can now use Rock Smash outside of battle, and Poké Marts will start carrying more items, such as Potions, Repels, and Escape Ropes. Now head back to Oreburgh Gate, where you meet Barry. He tells you to go back to Jubilife City and go north to Eterna City.

Oreburgh Gate (Basement)
Now that you have the ability to use Rock Smash, you can destroy the rocks to reach Oreburgh Gate's basement. This is the first place in the game to find a Psyduck, as well as 70. This former HM can be used later in the game to light up dark caves, and extra copies can be bought in the Veilstone Department Store.

Later...
Come back after receiving the Bicycle to hop over the dirt mounds to receive 31. Then after beating the Hearthome Gym and Canalave Gym, you can use Surf and Strength to find the Plate and 01.
After the battle, the Grunts run off. Professor Rowan explains that they are part of Team Galactic, a villainous group that seeks power from Pokémon evolution for some nefarious purpose. Rowan explains that Pokémon release some type of energy when they evolve, but he believes it is a "mystic power" beyond human control. After he and Lucas/Dawn leave, a man from Jubilife TV gives you a Fashion Case, which can hold accessories and backdrops, and tells you that the TV station is now open to visitors. If you so desire, you may now explore the TV station and get a mask of your starter Pokémon from the man on the second floor. Head north to 204.
South Route 204
You were able to access the southern part of 204 before going to Oreburgh City, but if you haven't already, pick up the Paralyze Heal and battle the trainers here, whom you should find quite weak. Now that you can use Rock Smash, you can get through the Ravaged Path, which connects the southern and northern parts of the route.

When you first reach 202, Professor Rowan's assistant (Lucas/Dawn) will give a demonstration on how to catch Pokémon by catching a wild Bidoof. The assistant then gives you five Poké Balls. The Pokémon that Lucas/Dawn has is the starter Pokémon that neither you nor Barry choose earlier. Before departing, Lucas/Dawn will mention that it is easier to capture a wild Pokémon if you lower the Pokémon's Stats more, and even easier if you inflict a status ailment. Now that you can capture Pokémon, you can also trade between games through the Union Room.
Now that you can now use Poké Balls, it is recommended that you start catching a few Pokémon, such as Starly or Shinx. You will be facing Barry soon and his starter Pokémon will be at the point where it will have a move of its own type in its arsenal, so your stater may need the extra backup.
Then you are off, having some of your first battles in the game. This is the first route where you can battle Trainers. There are three Trainers here, none of which have a Pokémon stronger than level 5.
Catching Bidoof and evolving it into a Bibarel (a Normal/Water-type Pokémon) is probably the best HM slave in the game. Shinx is a good pickup as a solid choice that evolves into Luxio and then Luxray. Shinx helps against Water and especially Flying types if you picked Turtwig or Chimchar, and helps Piplup out as well, but Shinx's evolutionary line focuses on Stats instead of Stats, so moves like Discharge that it learns quite late will not deal much damage. Shinx and its evolutions can learn some Physical-based Electric-type moves such as Spark and Thunder Fang, and two Dark-type moves, Bite and Crunch. Kricketot is hard to use even when it evolves into Kricketune. Starly is one of the best Flying-type Pokémon in the game, especially when it evolves into Staravia and then Staraptor, getting Close Combat and Brave Bird, plus being able to learn Fly and having very high Stats.
Continue on to Jubilife City, where Lucas/Dawn is waiting to tell you that your rival Barry is at the Trainers' School. Until you complete your missions here you cannot go east to 203. However, you can go north to 204 to face more wild Pokémon and catch a Budew, which can help a little with your first gym match, especially if you chose Chimchar.
The building southwest of the Pokémon Center is the Trainers' School. Here, you meet Barry and give him the List of key items in Generation IV, which contains two Town Maps. Barry gives you one of them then leaves for Oreburgh City. There are two Pokémon Trainers that can be fought here, in the northeast corner of the school. After you beat them, you will receive a TM10 (Hidden Power).
DPcity
DPcity
DPcity
DPcity
The Pokétch makes a new appliance called the Pokémon Watch, or Pokétch for short. After you receive the Town Map, the owner of the company, who is in the center of town, will approach you. He tells you to bring him three Coupons from the clowns around the city, and he will give you a Pokétch. The clowns ask simple questions about Pokémon (and the answer is always "Yes"). When you get the question correct, you receive the Coupon. After you get all three Coupons, return to the man to receive the Pokétch.

The Pokétch building is the northwest corner of the city. If you return after you receive an odd-numbered badge (i.e., the Coal Badge, Cobble Badge, Relic Badge, and Icicle Badge), you can talk to the owner inside the building to receive a new application for your Pokétch. Out of those you can receive from him, the Pokétch is the most useful because it can be used to track Roaming Pokémon.

Later......
Global Trade Station
The building in the south western area is the Global Trade Station, where you can connect with other players worldwide. However, to enter the building you need to have the Badge.

Jubilife TV
DPcity
DPcity
DPcity
DPcity

The building that is west of the northern exit to 204 is the Jubilife TV station. You may enter after receiving the Coal Badge and the Fashion Case. This building is where the daily lottery is held, where you can receive prizes if one of your Pokémon's Trainer ID numbers matches the random number drawn. On the second floor, you can dress up your Pokémon with accessories. On the third floor, you can access your game records.

Additionally, there is always a Trainer in the lobby that you can battle once per day, but the trainer that appears depends on the day of the week. There are therefore seven different trainers that may appear. (See the Jubilife TV article for trainer information.)

Additional Items
Inside the building west of Jubilife City that leads to 218, you can receive the Fishing from a Fisherman, who also offers to teach you how to fish. You can't do anything on Route 218 but fish until you get Surf, but you can catch a Magikarp here with your Old Rod. This is a useful Pokémon if you have enough patience, because while Magikarp is the weakest Pokémon ever, it evolves into the brutally powerful Gyarados, which is a great addition to a team and can learn Surf, Waterfall, Strength, and Rock Climb.

Back in Jubilife City, the apartment east of the TV station has a blond-haired girl on the first floor that will give you a In-battle effect item.

The following items are available in Jubilife City:

Once you have the Town Map and Pokétch, you can head east to 203, though you may want to head north to 204 and catch some more Pokémon first.

Route 204
Here, you can catch some Pokémon and battle some Trainers, but you can't continue through the Ravaged Path until you get Rock Smash and the Coal Badge. (See Section 3.)

Budew is a Grass/Poison-type Pokémon. It evolves into Roselia if leveled up when its happiness is high, and will evolve again into Roserade when a Shiny Stone is used. Roselia's evolutionary line has very high Stats. Budew has Absorb, which isn't very good to attack, but the healing is good to have. It learns Growth at Level 4 to raise its Special Attack, and it learns Stun Spore at Level 10, which inflicts paralysis and helps when you are catching Pokémon. Budew learns Mega Drain, the stronger version of Absorb, at Level 13, but then it doesn't learn any good moves after unless it evolves. Try to let Budew evolve at or before Level 19, because that's when Roselia learns Magical Leaf, a Grass-type move that never misses like Aerial Ace. Roselia learns Giga Drain, the strongest version of Absorb, at Level 25, then learns Petal Dance, a Grass-type Thrash, at Level 40. It also learns Aromatherapy, which cures all status ailments of your team, and Synthesis, which heals itself for a variable amount of HP depending on the weather, at Levels 43 and 46 respectively. When Roselia evolves into Roserade, it doesn't learn any moves afterwards, but its Special Attack will skyrocket. Roserade can also relearn Weather Ball, an attack that the type changes according to the weather. Roselia's evolution line can also learn SolarBeam and Sludge Bomb, which has high base power, through TMs, making use of their high Special Attack.

Route 203
The only new finds are Zubat and Abra. Zubat is basically useless, and Abra will only be powerful if you evolve Kadabra into Alakazam through trade. Additionally, Abra is difficult to catch because it will always use Teleport unless you use Taunt, which Chimchar will learn at level 9. However, if you are unable or too impatient to catch Abra, a woman in Oreburgh City will trade you one for a Machop.

To avoid wild Pokémon, you can use the Repel found on the north bank of the pond. In the future, you will be able to buy Repels from Poké Marts.
Then fight the two Trainers inside the cave. There is nothing to do here until except fight the two trainers and catch a Geodude or Zubat until you have your first badge. When you enter the city, a Youngster shows you to the Oreburgh Gym. You meet your rival Barry, but he tells you that you are too late to battle the Gym Leader, Roark. He mentions that Roark has left for the Oreburgh Mine.

If you explore around town, you can find someone in a condominium west of the Poké Mart that will trade you an Abra for a Machop. If you want an Abra but unable to catch one on 203, you can find a Machop on 207 (directly north of Oreburgh City) to trade. You can also find different types of Poké Balls from different people around town. One of these, a Poké Ball, can be obtained in the same building as the woman who wants a Machop by showing the man on the second floor a Zubat.
The only important building in Oreburgh City is the Oreburgh Mining Museum. When you retrieve a fossil from the Underground, you can talk to the man at the counter in the building to revive the fossil and retrieve whichever Pokémon is associated with that fossil. Each version determines what kind of fossil is commonly found, aside from the Old Amber.

Oreburgh Pokémon Center
Though all Pokémon Centers have a Wi-Fi Club in their basements, Oreburgh's is the first one you can access. An attendant named Teala will give you a Pal Pad and explain how it works the first time you enter. You can now battle and trade with other players using their Friend Code. Additionally, a Psychic on the ground floor will ask you which kind of trainer you want to be, presenting you with four options to choose from. This becomes your Trainer class while you are in a Union Room, and is otherwise assigned randomly.

Now head north to 207 to catch a Machop and grab a couple Poké Balls, or just continue south to the Oreburgh Mine.
In the Beginning...
When you first turn on the game, Professor Rowan introduces himself and but says to just call him the Pokémon Professor. He then asks if it is your first adventure and is willing to give advice as needed such as the basic control and adventure information. Then, he talks and asks you to touch the button in the middle circle of the Poké Ball. A Munchlax then appears from the Poké Ball, and Rowan goes on to speak about the human relationship alongside Pokémon as friends. He then states that his job as a professor is to conduct research on these Pokémon.

You are then asked if you are a boy or a girl, so choose wisely as you will be unable to change gender once you have started your adventure. You then choose a name, which will also stay with you for the remainder of the game. You are than asked what your friend's name is, and he will be your rival for the game.

Your adventure now begins, so it's time to jump into the world of Pokémon!

Twinleaf Town
The journey begins at your home in Twinleaf Town. You are watching the television special report titled "Search for the Red Gyrados!" when a news broadcast describes a team searching for a red Gyarados in a far-off lake (presumably the Lake of Rage in Johto). The broadcast states that the team has not observed the Pokémon in question.

On your way out of the house, your mother will tell you that your rival Barry wishes to see you as it is an emergency. She also warns you to stay out the tall grass as wild Pokémon may attack. Just as you enter his house, Barry bumps into you. He tells you to come with him to the lake and says that he is fining you PDollar1 million if you aren't there. As he is about to leave, Barry says he has forgotten something and runs back inside the house. Head inside and upstairs, where Barry is deciding what to bring. Barry then notices you and rushes out of the house. Barry will now wait for you on 201.

Lake Verity
After you reach Route 201, Barry tells you about the news report on TV about the Red Gyarados. He wants to go to the local lake to see if there is a similar Pokémon, and he will now follow you. The only place you can walk to is Lake Verity. Upon your arrival, you see Professor Rowan, and either Lucas or Dawn (whichever is the opposite gender of your selected player character). The two are searching the lake for something and discuss Rowan's return to Sinnoh after four years. They push past you, and Lucas/Dawn apologizes. Barry goes to investigate the briefcase Rowan left behind, but when you enter the long grass you are each attacked by a wild Starly. You then open the briefcase to find three Poké Balls, containing Piplup, Chimchar and Turtwig.

When you choose one, that Pokémon will become your starter Pokémon, and Barry will automatically select the one with a type advantage over yours. Choosing the correct starter Pokémon for your playstyle can be an important choice in the game.

Turtwig, the Turtle Pokémon, is a solid choice. Turtwig evolves into Grotle, and then Torterra at level 32. Turtwig is a Grass type Pokémon, and Torterra gains a Ground type. Torterra has great Attack and Defense, but low Special Attack and Speed. It gets Razor Leaf and Crunch pretty early on, and Earthquake eventually. Torterra also gets Wood Hammer from the Move Tutor. Another good move for Torterra is Curse, which boosts its Attack and Defense, its two best stats, while decreasing its Speed, which is already very low. It also gets Synthesis for healing itself. For TM moves it gets Bullet Seed, Return, Giga Impact and so on. Also it gets TM Rock Polish to sharply boost Speed every time it uses it, which helps patch up its horrific speed. Swords Dance is also good to sharply boost the Attack stat, but you should choose to use either Curse or Swords Dance. It can learn Cut, Strength, Rock Smash, and Rock Climb for HM move. Torterra does have a 4x Ice weakness, so be wary of that. It any case Turtwig does good at the gyms for the most part and is a good choice for your starter.

Chimchar, the Chimp Pokémon, has high speed and high attacking stats, but at the cost of being quite fragile(having low defenses). It can use physical and special moves well. It evolves at Level 14 into Monferno, a Fire/Fighting-type Pokémon, and gains a ton of power, such as immediately learn Mach Punch after evolving(assuming you let it evolve at Level 14) and learning one of the second strongest Fighting-type move, Close Combat, at Level 36, which Monferno will start evolving into Infernape. If you make sure Chimchar evolves before or in the first Gym, you shouldn't have trouble with the Rock-type Pokémon. Chimchar and its evolution line focus primarily on offense and speed, having very high Attack, Special Attack and Speed. Its Defense and Special Defense are low, but it has the power to take out most Pokémon in the game with 1 hit or 2 hits before they even get a chance to strike, so it's not really that bad unless there is a type disadvantage. Some good moves Chimchar gets are Flame Wheel, Close Combat and Flare Blitz. Chimchar can also learn Flamethrower at Level 41 if you don't evolve it until then, but if you evolved it, Monferno and Infernape can still learn it by TM, which can be obtained before the sixth Gym. Brick Break, Focus Blast and Fire Blast are some TM moves to consider, although it learns many, many more, even learning Rock Slide, Stone Edge, Earthquake and Dig. It gets the HMs Cut, Strength (a good attacking option as well), Rock Smash and Rock Climb. In comparison to the other two starter Pokémon, Chimchar is probably the best.

Piplup, the Penguin Pokémon, has high defenses and special attack. Its attack is not good and its speed is also not good. When it becomes Empoleon, it gains the Steel type. The addition of the Steel-type will give it a wide variety of resistances, making it take very little damage from quite a few attacks. Pretty much, only Electric-, Fighting-, and Ground-type attacks are what you need to worry about — nearly everything else is resisted. Unfortunately, this good typing comes at a high cost: a bad movepool. Basically its best level up moves are Metal Claw, Aqua Jet, Peck, and Drill Peck and with Empoleon's sub-par Attack stat, it is better off using Special-based attacks such as Bubblebeam, which Prinplup learns at Level 24. If you are fine using TMs and HMs on Empoleon, Surf (HM03) and Flash Cannon (TM90) are both very powerful attacks for Empoleon to learn. Also Empoleon does eventually get Hydro Pump at level 59, but surf is preferred for general utility. In comparison to the other two starters, Piplup is probably the hardest to use. It will struggle with sub-par moves until you get the HM for Surf (right before the 5th Badge), but will then become much more useful, and very powerful after getting Flash Cannon.

All of the starters are good choices and it is down to your preference and playstyle. In any case, time to move on.

Battle the Level 2 Starly, and defeat it to give your new Pokémon 16 experience points. Suddenly, Lucas/Dawn returns and remarks that Rowan would be very angry if he/she forgot the briefcase. When Lucas/Dawn realizes that you have used the Pokémon from the briefcase, he/she takes the briefcase and hurries off.

Twinleaf Town
On the way back to Twinleaf Town, you meet Lucas/Dawn and Professor Rowan, who takes a look at the Pokémon you and Barry have and returns to his lab. Rowan's assistant mentions that you should stop by Rowans's lab and then hurries off.

After that, you will automatically return to your house in Twinleaf Town. You explain the situation that occurred at the lake, and Mom gives you a pair of Running Shoes and asks you to visit Professor Rowan in Sandgem Town.
Route 201
Once you are on Route 201, head east, through the tall grass. Two Pokémon, Bidoof and Starly, can be found here, but they cannot be caught yet.

If you head west to Verity Lakefront after the first patch of grass, you can find a Potion near the flowers nearest to the lake's entrance. Back to the east, head north through another patch until you reach a woman. She works for the Poké Mart and will give you another Potion for free. Continue east until you reach Sandgem Town.

Upon reaching Sandgem Town, Professor Rowan's assistant will stop you and have you go with him/her. You are then shown the Pokémon Research Lab, the largest building in town. As you are about to enter, Barry zooms out and says that Rowan isn't as intimidating as he first seemed, and then departs for Jubilife City. After entering the lab, Professor Rowan examines the Pokémon you chose at the lake and lets you keep it as a gift. You will then be given the option to give it a nickname. The professor formally introduces himself, and entrusts you with a Pokédex to record the data of all the Pokémon that are found throughout the Sinnoh region. Lucas/Dawn also says that he/she is on a Pokédex quest and mentions the first Pokémon that he/she used, which happens to be the one not chosen by you or your rival at the lake.

Upon leaving the lab, Lucas/Dawn will give you a tour and show you the Pokémon Center and Poké Mart. He/she then insists that you tell your mom that you are leaving on a journey and leaves to 202, where he/she won't let you pass until you complete your mission in Twinleaf Town.
Barry's mother then stops by and admits that Barry left so fast that he forgot the List of key items in Generation IV, but your mother suggests that you can delivery this to Barry personally. Barry's mom mentions that Barry should be in Jubilife City right now.
Leave Twinleaf and return to Sandgem Town. Head south to 219 to pick up a Status ailment healing item, but you cannot explore the rest of this route until you can use Surf. Head north of Sandgem Town to reach Route 202.
Anyone knows about the rain? Thought it was Acid Rain when I tried to solve the problem, it didn't work! --The Bulb&#39;s Master 12:23, 9 August 2009 (UTC) Master of Bulbasaur and Turtwig♀
:Rain happens here from time to time. Kinda like Diamond Dust sometimes happens at Snowpoint City. It's not a problem. &mdash;<span style="font-family:Verdana"><span style="color:#000">darklord</span><span style="color:#0047AB">trom</span></span> 23:34, 9 August 2009 (UTC)
Trivia
<blockquote>Like Route 11 in Kanto, Route 43 in Johto and Route 123 in Hoenn, Route 213 and its associated lakefront use the theme from the first meeting with the professor of each region as its theme.</blockquote>
What is this supposed to mean? -- Hohoo 19:28, 24 September 2009 (UTC)
:It means that Routes 11, 43, 123, and 213 reuse the music first heard when the player meets Professor Whatsisname. &mdash;<span style="font-family:Verdana"><span style="color:#000">darklord</span><span style="color:#0047AB">trom</span></span> 06:42, 25 September 2009 (UTC)

:: I think the trivia is wrong in all ways save for the route 123 music. The actual routes that shares the Professor <Tree> music are the routes 24 and 25; 30, 31, 32, 33 and 34; 123 and some others that i don't remember in Hoenn; and Sinnoh don't have one.
Suite Key
Shouldn't this mention that you find the Suite Key here, and can exchange it to the girl in Valor Lakefront? ~ Backgammon 23:18, 30 April 2011 (UTC)
:No the Suite Key is actually found in Hotel Grand Lake. It is mentioned on that article. <span style="color:Blue;">--Pokemaster</span><span style="color:Blue;">97</span> 23:25, 30 April 2011 (UTC)
::I see. The area the Suite Key is located is still technically Route 213, but I didn't see the link to the Hotel Grand Lake page above the items. However, searching "Suite Key" brings you to the List of key items in Generation IV, and it links to Route 213 under Locations. Perhaps this should be changed to Hotel Grand Lake or Hotel Grand Lake (Route 213) for clarity? Thanks, Backgammon 02:16, 1 May 2011 (UTC)
