Gengar (Japanese: ゲンガー Gangar) is a dual-type Pokémon.

It evolves from Haunter when traded. It is the final form of Gastly.

Biology
Physiology
Gengar is a dark purple, furred Pokémon with a roundish body. Gengar's hands now connect to the rest of its body. In addition, it now has a List of Pokémon by body style. Gengar has a spiky fur-covered back. Gengar's eyes are now red, and its mouth is usually curled into a sinister grin.

Gender differences
None.

Special abilities
Gengar have the ability to hide perfectly in the shadow of any object, granting it exceptional stealth. However, Gengar's body acts as a heat sink; its presence cools the temperature of the surrounding area by nearly 10°F, because it took the warmth. In addition, Gengar possesses the ability to fly through the air, as demonstrated by Morty's Gengar. Since Gengar is a fully evolved Pokémon, it can use Hyper Beam and Giga Impact.

Behavior
Gengar are very mischievous, and at times, malicious. They enjoy playing practical jokes, such as pretending to be one's shadow, then behaving erratically. When the quarry notices, the Gengar takes delight in its victim's terror. However, Gengar have been known to be loyal to Trainers that treat them well; the smile is less mischievous and friendlier in this case. Gengar may also cast curses.

Habitat
Gengar live in shadows of rooms, caves, and dark places where shadows form, especially in urban areas such as cities and back alleys but only during the night. Gengar are also known to live in mountains. It normally shares its range with Gastly and Haunter, but reports of wild Gengar are not unheard of.

Diet
Pokémon food
Gengar drains the life force from its victims. It may also Dream Eater. Like its pre-evolution, Haunter, it may lick its prey to drain the life force.

In the anime
Major appearances
Gengar first appeared in the opening of the first episode, Pokémon - I Choose You!, where it and a Nidorino battled in a Colosseum on TV.

Ash first saw a Gengar in person in Lavender Town in The Tower of Terror while searching for a Ghost Pokémon to fight Sabrina with. Due to a close call, Ash got to spend some unexpected time with the ghostly trio, Gastly, Sabrina, and Gengar. It, along with Haunter, seemed to have a fondness for Tsukkomi, and attempt to (unsuccessfully) amuse Ash by acting as a pair of performers. It reappeared in a flashback in the following episode.

In The Ancient Puzzle of Pokémopolis, a giant Gengar was awakened near the ancient city of Pokémopolis where it battled an equally large Alakazam.

Drake of the Orange Islands used a Gengar in his battle with Ash in Hello, Pummelo! and Enter The Dragonite. His Gengar managed to confuse Ash's Tauros before he returned it and instead tried with Ash's Lapras.
In the Pokémon Adventures manga
In Pokémon Adventures, Agatha has two Gengar on her team, and many in her Ghost army. One of them was used to attack Blue and Koga from the shadows, draining the latter's life force as it possessed his shadow. Eventually, it was taken down when Koga used the tail that the old woman's Arbok bit off his own to distract it long enough for Blue's Porygon to deal the finishing blow.

Another Gengar was seen at the beginning of the FireRed and LeafGreen saga in 23. It was used by a kid from Pallet Town in an attempt to capture a Nidorino, thus replicating the opening sequence of the Generation I video games (and their FireRed and LeafGreen).

In the Pokémon Pocket Monsters manga
Blue's Gengar debuted in Get Rid Of The Ghost Pokémon!! as a Haunter. There it evolved while battling Red.

Green caught a Gengar prior to PM054 but officially debuted in PM055.

In the Pokémon Gold & Silver: The Golden Boys manga
In A Promise Given to Miltank, Morty called out Gengar to stop a Spearow from stealing the satchel that contained berries collected by Gold.

In the Pokémon Zensho manga
Agatha's Gengar went up against Satoshi's Alakazam and lost in Indigo Plateau.
* Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Red Rescue Team and Blue Rescue Team: Gengar is the leader of Team Meanies. While often accompanied by Ekans and Medicham, Gengar will often act alone and spends much of the game causing trouble, even convincing the village to exile the hero, blaming him or her for the natural disasters. ==Trivia==
* In the Pokémon Red and Blue beta, Gengar was originally known as "Phantom".
* Gengar, along with Nidorino, with whom it battles in the beginning of , originate from the Capsule Monsters manga, which is considered the precursor to the Pokémon franchise.
* Gengar can be caught in the wild in Generation IV through the dual-slot mode, as can another Pokémon previously obtainable only via trading, Steelix, though Steelix can be battled normally.
* Even though Gengar is part Poison, like its pre-evolutions, it cannot learn any Poison-type moves via level up.
* Gengar is tied with Froslass for the fastest Ghost Pokémon, with a base Speed of 110, and has the highest base Special Attack stat of any Poison Pokémon at 130.
* When being escorted through Mt. Freeze and Murky Cave in Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Red Rescue Team and Blue Rescue Team, it knows Leer, Scratch, and Quick Attack, although it cannot learn those moves by any means in any generation.
* Gengar is shorter than its pre-evolution, Haunter. The same thing happens to Dragonite, Bellossom, and Porygon2.
* Gengar is the same height as Ethan. While many other Pokémon share this distinction, Gengar comes the closest to also weighing the same (Gengar weighs 89.3 lbs, the Trainer weighs 88.2 lbs).
* Although it has the Ability Levitate, it can be heard landing on the floor when sent out of its Poké Ball. It shares this trait with Eelektross.

Origin
It seems to be simply based on general cartoonish ghosts, cats, or Cheshire Cat and possibly on a distorted shadow of a human being like shadow people.

Name origin
Gengar and Gangar are possibly a shortening of doppelgänger, a double of a person, which is fitting for a Pokémon with a habit of pretending to be a person's shadow. The kanji 幻 maboroshi can also be read as gen and is used in words meaning phantom or illusion. There is also a striking pronunciation similarity to the Danish word gjenganger.
Gengar's front sprite uses a different coloration in HG/SS than it does in D/P/Pt. However, only one back sprite is shown here, and it uses the same colors as the D/P/Pt front sprite. Did they change the colors of Gengar's back sprite in HG/SS? It would seem odd to me if they didn't, but if they did, maybe a note to that effect should be added?
----- is a Normal glitch Pokémon in . It has been dubbed DPBox by gamers due to its appearance and the games it was discovered in. It is also often referred to as invisible Shiny Bulbasaur when appearing on the opponent's side due to having the cry of Bulbasaur, always being Shiny, and seemingly having no sprite.

Properties
It doesn't show up on the Pokémon screen and has no usable attacks. It is always male, Shiny, at level 0, and has 0/0 HP. It has the cry of Bulbasaur. After every attack animation, its HP bar disappears. In Double Battles, it copies the Speed of its ally. It can only appear on the player's side of the field without cheating, and can only be used temporarily.

If it is attacked in a Single Battle or a Double Battle with no ally, the game will assume there is no target, then end the battle unless it is a Trainer battle and the opponent has more Pokémon. In Double Battles, if a move is used that would hit ----- and other Pokémon, the game simply skips it getting hit.

Controlled by the player
When a Pokémon is used in battle, there is usually a message saying 'What will <Pokémon's name> do?' but when ----- is in battle, the message is 'Wh t ll do?' with small bits of glitched characters in the first two spaces.

If the player's party only contains ----- or Eggs, the game will detect that the player has no Pokémon left after that turn ends and cause them to black out.

In Double Battles, if accompanied by another Pokémon (other than another -----), it will always automatically use Struggle without allowing the player to select an action.

In Double Battles, when selecting an enemy to attack, the button on the touch screen representing ----- has no sprite or name. However, the icon shown next to the fight button is 000.

If ----- is the last Pokémon in the party, and the player tries to add a Pokémon to said party, the Pokémon from the Box will have a party sprite with a different color palette. Then when the Box is exited, the Pokémon will loom over the Box and disappear from the party.

As the opponent
When appearing on the opponent's side of the field, it seems invisible, but actually uses the same sprite as seen in its back sprite, only moved up off the top of the screen. The corners of the sprite become visible when it uses Struggle, and its full sprite can be seen when it falls due to fainting. Its shadow appears off far to the right of where it would be expected to be.

When encountered or sent out, its name appears as "dl dl..." appearing several times; a message displaying its name will have a glitched transition into the next message.

If caught when there are five or less Pokémon in the party, it will take up the next empty slot in the party permanently. If the player tries to withdraw a Pokémon into that space, it will vanish. The only known way to get rid of it is to use a cheat code to replace the ----- with another Pokémon.

Japanese version
On very early versions of Japanese Diamond and Pearl, this glitch Pokémon could be seen when the player has an Egg as the first Pokémon in the party and any ordinary Pokémon in the second slot and then enters a Double Battle.

When the battle starts ----- will be visible and when attacked the game will give the message "But there was no target..."

It will also appear in a player's party when attempting to enter a Double Battle with two fainted Pokémon, an Egg, and a healthy Pokémon in that order in the party. The glitch does not work when using a Vs. Seeker to enter the Double Battle. When sent out, it will have Bulbasaur's cry and will sparkle as if it were a Shiny Pokémon.

Through the Pomeg glitch
In , ----- can be sent into battle by battling a Trainer in the Battleground, Pokémon League, or Seven Stars Restaurant while the player's only Pokémon are fainted or Eggs. This is possible through use of the Pomeg glitch.

Performing the glitch
This glitch can be performed against the Elite Four, in the BattlegroundPt, or at the Seven Stars Restaurant if the last conscious non-Egg Pokémon in the player's party is a Pokémon whose level is above 40 but less than 100 with a high amount of HP EVs, whose remaining HP is the same as below.

<code>Remaining HP = (HP lost through use of a Pomeg Berry) - (HP gained through use of a Rare Candy after using a Pomeg Berry)</code>

Then a Pomeg Berry must be used, which makes the Pokémon's HP roll over to a very high number. Then a Vitamin must be used to level up the Pokémon, causing it to faint. The player does not black out.

By battling at the Pokémon League or Battleground, the player will send out a -----.

At the Seven Stars Restaurant, the player can perform the glitch in a Double Battle. Once the battle starts, the player will send out two -----. Due to being unable to target -----, opponents will target their ally.

This can be performed with one or more Pokémon, as long as all of them are fainted or Eggs. If performed with more than one Pokémon, the second Pokémon will appear in the first slot on the party screen, the third in the second, etc.

During the battle, if the game checks to see if either player has no Pokémon left (whenever a Pokémon takes damage and at the end of each round), the player will automatically black out if the only Pokémon they have are -----. If performed the glitch with a fainted Pokémon in the second party slot or further and a Revive or Herbal medicine is used to revive it mid-battle, the player will not lose; however, at the end of the round the player will be forced to switch it in. If this happens in a Double Battle under this glitch, the Pokémon will replace the left -----; the right -----'s sprite will remain, but its turn will always be skipped.

xBgXbAErIRI

Through cheating
Glitched partner Trainer
It can appear when the player "recruits" a partner Trainer or has a following Pokémon from Amity Square (which the game considers to be the same thing) and leaves the area the partner is "supposed" to be by using a walk through walls cheat. The player must then trigger a wild battle. This results in the partner being replaced by a placeholder partner when the player leaves the "recruitment area", making their back sprite identical to the player's and their only Pokémon -----. The reason for this is that when the player leaves the area, the game assumes that the player is no longer traveling with the partner and it changes all of the partner's data back to placeholder data. When triggering a battle, the partner will send out ----- as a placeholder Pokémon. ----- will be one of the two wild Pokémon.

Encounter cheat
Due to having the index number 0000 appear, ----- will appear if a Pokémon with that index number is forced to be encountered. If attacked, the game will say that there is no target and the battle will end. It can easily be caught with any Poké Ball, but will not appear in the party or PC.

Instant Egg cheat
If a cheat used to instantly receive an Egg from the Day Care Center is used, and there are no Pokémon in Day Care, the Egg received will hatch into ----- in 255 steps. As an Egg, it will also not show up in the party either.

In HG-SS
If the player uses a walk through walls cheat to sikp getting a starter and goes into the grass, the player will have a ----- at
lvl.0.
It will faint after the first turn.

In Generation V
A Pokémon with the same name is present in Black and White; however, it is a completely different Pokémon. It can be encountered the same way as ??????????—by using an Action Replay code for a Pokémon that doesn't exist (similarly, the sprite resembles that of ?????????? as well).

rDf9HuVrREQ&NR

Trivia
* ----- has been found to display a long name, repeating the last letter that appeared and overlapping three times as its name, before the player's Pokémon is sent out.
<!--* It is also possible to clone items with -----. (Removed until we have proof on this.)-->
Gengar (Japanese: ゲンガー Gangar) is a dual-type Pokémon.

In the collision between Night Shade and Ice Beam, both Lapras and Gengar fainted.

A Gengar appeared under the ownership of Ecruteak City Gym Leader Morty in A Ghost Of A Chance, From Ghost to Ghost, and For Ho-Oh the Bells Toll!.

Agatha used a Gengar to battle Ash's Pikachu in The Scheme Team. The Ghost Pokémon defeated Pikachu.

Gengar was the leader of "Team Meanies" in Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Team Go-Getters out of the Gate!.

A Gengar appeared in Ghoul Daze! together with its pre-evolutions, Gastly and Haunter.

Minor appearances
A group of Gengar, along with a group of Haunter, was creating illusions within a forest in Illusion Confusion.

A Gengar appeared under the ownership of a trainer in Celebi: Voice of the Forest.

A Gengar appeared in One Team, Two Team, Red Team, Blue Team!.

A Gengar under the ownership of Hearthome City's Gym Leader Fantina appeared in a flashback in Playing the Leveling Field!, and appeared in A Shield with a Twist where it was defeated by Ash's Buizel.
Pokémon Adventures

While often accompanied by Ekans and Medicham, Gengar will often act alone and spends much of the game causing trouble, even convincing the village to exile the hero, blaming him or her for the natural disasters. However, it is later revealed that he is the cursed human.
Trivia
* Gengar is shorter than its pre-evolution, Haunter. The same thing happens to Dragonite, Bellossom, and Porygon2.
* Gengar is the same height as Ethan. While many other Pokémon share this distinction, Gengar comes the closest to also weighing the same (Gengar weighs 89.3 lbs (40.5 kg), the Trainer weighs 88.2 lbs (40 kg)).

Origin
It seems to be simply based on general cartoonish ghosts, cats, or Cheshire Cat and possibly on a distorted shadow of a human being like shadow people.

Name origin
Gengar's name is possibly a shortening of doppelgänger - a ghostly double of a person, which would be a fitting name for a Pokémon with a habit of pretending to be a person's shadow. The kanji 幻, which can be read "gen", can be used for words meaning "phantom" or "illusion". There is also a striking pronunciation similarity to the Danish word genganger - a person who returns as a spirit after death.

A Bad Egg (Japanese: ダメタマゴ Bad Egg), stylized Bad EGG in Generation III, is a phenomenon present in the Generation III and Generation IV Pokémon games that results from a corruption of Pokémon data so that the checksum does not match up with the data's calculations. In Generation IV, sometimes Bad Eggs can hatch into the previous Pokémon, or -----.

Bad Eggs are not really Pokémon Eggs, and may possibly never have been, but instead the default message returned by the game if the checksum is off (which happens only if data is altered badly). Bad Eggs rarely hatch and cannot be released, merely taking up space, though there are methods of removing them—it is possible to trade a Bad Egg away into another game, or remove it by cheating.

Game data
Like a normal Egg, Bad Eggs appear with a type of ???, as well as have the same Pokémon status screen as an Egg would. Despite this, the similarities end there, as Bad Eggs can be holding items (such as Poké Balls, which cannot be taken), be placed within types of Poké Balls aside from the standard kind, and have seals attached—which prevents them from being deposited in the PC. It is thus possible for all party slots to be taken up by Bad Eggs. If this occurs, battles cannot be fought at all. Some may be reported to have Pokérus or be cured of it, and may be fainted.

A Bad Egg placed in the first slot of the party will, rather than having a normal Egg menu sprite, have a differently colored version of the menu sprite of the Pokémon following it, such as a golden Bulbasaur, a blue Marowak, or a brown Ho-Oh. It is unknown exactly why the sprite retains the last Pokémon's sprite, but the color change is because of the use of palette 0 for this sprite—this is why Pokémon with palette 0 do not change color.

If it is forced to hatch through use of a cheat code, a ? will come out and the game will immediately freeze.

Appearances of Bad Eggs
Generation III
When using the GameShark code for quick Daycare level-up, an invisible Bad Egg will appear in the party, which can be switched around using the PC and used in battle. Sometimes, the Bad Egg will take form of the silhouette of a Pokémon in the PC Box. However, attempting to view its summary screen will cause a game freeze.

Alternatively, by using codes to capture wild Pokémon instantly, reducing their HP to 0 yet keeping the battle going, it will be sent to the PC instead as a Bad Egg. This Bad Egg can be removed from the game by picking up another Pokémon while it is held, then setting it back down. This Bad Egg appears differently; instead of an Egg in its status box, it is the "unseen Pokémon" image used in the Pokédex and by ??????????. Like ??????????, using it in battle will cause an instant white out (if used without any other Pokémon in the party).

Bad Eggs can also occur if the player attempts to hack a Pokémon which has an illegal moveset, as the checksums will not add up correctly (as the checksum would use the Pokémon's normal moveset at that level as a check).

Generation IV
Index number 495
In addition to forcing an ordinary Pokémon to have an invalid checksum, it is possible to encounter a Bad Egg in the wild by using an Action Replay on Diamond and setting the wild Pokémon modifier code to 495 (an identifier of Manaphy Egg, although a Manaphy Egg is rendered as a Bad Egg in battle). The game will freeze instantly on capture when the game attempts to show the Pokédex entry. A normal Egg captured this way (using an identifier of 494) will hatch into a random Pokémon, including Pokémon that do not normally hatch from eggs like legendary Pokémon and evolved Pokémon, or may hatch into ----- or, like its Generation II counterpart, another Egg (which will then go on to hatch into a ----- itself). Due to being incorrectly generated, whatever is hatched may eventually turn into a Bad Egg itself, and then subsequently hatch yet again. The use of an Action Replay with a "1 hit kill" cheat in Double Battles will often result in a Bad Egg appearing. If the player sees a Bad Egg, the game will occasionally freeze. If Transform is used against a Bad Egg, its backsprite will be exactly the same as its front sprite. Also, if Transform is used, the only move it knows is Splash.

From catching other Trainers' Pokémon via cheat
If the cheat to catch other Trainers' Pokémon is used, often the Pokémon caught, if following moving after another Pokémon, will either be named the same as the previous Pokémon or Bad Egg, or no letters whatsoever. There are no other side effects.

Hacked data in Pokémon Battle Revolution
In Pokémon Battle Revolution, some Pokémon that are hacked may become Bad Eggs when they are copied from . A common example of a Bad Egg replacing a Pokémon is when that Pokémon has more than 510 effort values. Bad Eggs are unable to battle in Pokémon Battle Revolution.

If the player has a hacked Pokémon, although it won't appear to be a Bad Egg on a DS game, it will show up as a Bad Egg on Pokémon Battle Revolution if used in a DS battle.

Generation V
Generation V Action Replay code
In Generation V, if a wild Pokémon modifier code is used to encouter a Pokémon with a National Pokédex number greater than 649, a Bad Egg may appear as a result. The Egg will flee from battle. Catching the Egg will result in the message for a successfully caught Pokémon, but the data of the Egg will be deleted after the battle. The Egg does not have a Pokédex entry or any status information. The player's Pokémon will not earn any experience after the battle. Due to the removal of seals as a game mechanic, Generation V Bad Eggs cannot have seals.
