The game was announced worldwide on the {{pkmn|25th Anniversary}} of the release of {{game|Red and Green|s}} on February 27, 2021 at 12 am JST through [[Pokémon Press Conference|Pokémon Presents]]. It was released on the [[Nintendo Switch]] worldwide on January 28, 2022. All copies of the game are playable in nine languages: Japanese, English, German, Spanish, French, Italian, Korean, and Simplified and Traditional Chinese.

==Plot==

The [[player character]] is transported [[Time travel|back in time]] to the [[Hisui]] [[region]] by [[Arceus (game)|Arceus]], who bestows upon them a device called the [[Arc Phone]] and the task of "seeking out all Pokémon". Upon waking up, the player meets [[Professor Laventon]], a [[Pokémon Professor]] working for the [[Galaxy Team|Galaxy Expedition Team]], who tells the player that they fell out of the mysterious space-time rift in the sky above [[Mount Coronet]]. After helping Laventon {{pkmn2|caught|catch}} his three runaway [[starter Pokémon]], they are escorted to [[Jubilife Village]], where they meet {{ga|Rei}}/{{ga|Akari}}, the Professor's [[Professors' aides|assistant]] and a member of the Galaxy Team Survey Corps. Since the player has no place to stay in, the Survey Corps Captain [[Cyllene]] accepts Professor Laventon's request to let them join the organization, offering them a place to stay in and food in exchange for working for them if they pass a trial set up for them. To help them pass the trial, Laventon gives the player one of the starter Pokémon they caught earlier. After passing the trial of catching a {{p|Bidoof}}, a {{p|Starly}}, and a {{p|Shinx}}, the player is formally accepted into the Survey Corps and given the mission of completing the [[Pokédex]].

While exploring Hisui, the player learns that mysterious lightning striking down from the same space-time rift they fell out is causing the [[Noble Pokémon]] around the region to on wild frenzies and attack people. The player is given the mission to visit each of these Noble Pokémon, each of which are overseen by a [[Warden]] belonging to one of Hisui region's two clans: the [[Diamond Clan]] led by [[Adaman]], and the [[Pearl Clan]] led by [[Irida]]. Each of these clans worships a deity they refer to as the "almighty Sinnoh", but they disagree upon the other clan's viewpoint whether this deity represents time or space. During their travels, the player also has several encounters with merchant [[Volo]] from the [[Ginkgo Guild]], who likes studying the history of Hisui, and the bandit trio known as the [[Miss Fortunes|Miss Fortune sisters]]. Whenever the player defeats a Noble Pokémon or befriends a rideable Pokémon, they are gifted with a [[Plate]].

After the player has managed to quell the last of the five Noble Pokémon, the space-time rift in the sky suddenly expands even further and the sky above Hisui turns red. Suspecting that the player, who fell out of the same rift, is somehow connected to this, Galaxy Team Commander [[Kamado]] banishes them from Jubilife Village and kicks them out of the Galaxy Team. The player seeks help from both clans, but they refuse to help in order to maintain neutrality with the Galaxy Team. Volo, however, agrees to help the player and takes them to a secret settlement, the [[Ancient Retreat]], where they learn that an artifact known as the [[Red Chain]] could help bind the world back together and make the rift disappear. To find the necessary materials to create the chain, the player visits each of Hisui's three lakes and receives a necessary material from each of the [[lake guardians]]. Once all the materials have been gathered, the lake guardians combine them together to form the Red Chain. With the Red Chain in their possession, the player returns to Jubilife Village, only to learn that Kamado has led the Galaxy Team Security Corps to the [[Temple of Sinnoh]] atop Mount Coronet to deal with a Pokémon sighted at the space-time rift. The player climbs to the summit and defeats Kamado in {{pkmn|battle}}, finally making him see reason and apologize for doubting them.

Depending on whether the player went to look for the Red Chain materials with Adaman or Irida, either {{p|Dialga}} or {{p|Palkia}} appears at the temple. However, when the player tries to use the Red Chain on it, the artifact is broken to pieces, forcing the player to confront the [[Legendary Pokémon]]. Although the player manages to catch it, the other Legendary Pokémon then appears as well, forcing everyone to retreat. Using a clue given by the Legendary Pokémon the player caught, Laventon crafts the [[Origin Ball]], a one-of-a-kind [[Poké Ball]] created out of the Red Chain fragments and a sample of the [[Origin Ore]], which they decide to use to stop the Legendary Pokémon at Mount Coronet. The player returns to the Temple of Sinnoh, where the Legendary Pokémon transforms into its {{form|Dialga and Palkia|Origin Forme}}, destroying the temple in the process, before challenging the player and its counterpart. After defeating it, the player uses the Origin Ball to catch the Legendary Pokémon, causing the space-time rift to disappear and returning the sky back to normal. With the appearance of both Dialga and Palkia, the Diamond and Pearl Clans realize neither of them was worshipping a false deity and set aside their differences.

After a feast to celebrate the player's success, Volo asks them to investigate the Plates and collect the ones they don't own yet. The player travels around Hisui and collects Plates from various sources, most commonly receiving them from the Legendary Pokémon of Hisui. Once the player has collected 17 of the 18 Plates, Volo tells them of {{p|Giratina}}, a Legendary Pokémon just as powerful as Dialga and Palkia, which was banished to [[Distortion World|another world]] due to its cruelty. He takes the player to the ruins of the Temple of Sinnoh, where he reveals that he was the one who caused the space-time rift to appear by seeking out Giratina, in the hopes that Dialga and Palkia's appearance would make Arceus appear and allow him to use its power to create a new world. He challenges the player to a battle, but once he's defeated, Giratina appears by his side and challenges the player, transforming into its own {{form|Giratina|Origin Forme}} midway through the battle. Once Giratina is defeated, Volo hands the player [[Spooky Plate|the final Plate]], at which point the player's [[Celestica Flute]] transforms into the [[Azure Flute]]. Volo is surprised by Arceus having chosen the player instead of him and leaves in anger, swearing to one day conquer Arceus and create a new world, even if [[Generation IV|it will take him centuries to do so]].

Once the player has caught at least one of every non-{{pkmn2|Mythical}} Pokémon species, they return to the Temple of Sinnoh and play the Azure Flute, granting them access to the [[Hall of Origin]], where Arceus challenges them. Once the player has emerged victorious, Arceus willingly sends a fragment of itself to join them and grants them the [[Legend Plate]], which allows the [[Mythical Pokémon]] to change its [[type]] mid-battle.

* The game features {{p|Rowlet}}, {{p|Cyndaquil}}, and {{p|Oshawott}} as [[starter Pokémon]], and {{ga|Rei}} and {{ga|Akari}} as [[player character]]s. Other NPCs include the members of the [[Galaxy Team|Galaxy Expedition Team]]. The player character that is not selected appears in the story as an NPC.
* The game takes place in the [[Hisui]] region, a past version of [[Sinnoh]].
* All standard wild encounters are now [[symbol encounter]]s. Pokémon may exhibit different behaviors, such as fleeing, sleeping/waking, emoting, or becoming aggressive. These behaviors may differ depending on the in-game weather or time of day.
* The player may catch Pokémon from the overworld directly by throwing a [[Poké Ball]]. An aiming reticle appears on-screen during this. Hitting a Pokémon from behind with a Poké Ball when it has not yet seen the player greatly increases the likelihood of capture.
* Poké Balls have an "old-fashioned" appearance in this game, with a wooden bottom half, a buckle-shaped metal-colored implement instead of a button, and a valve on top that puffs out steam on a successful catch.
* To battle a wild Pokémon, the player must throw one of their own Pokémon's Poké Balls nearby. Hitting the wild Pokémon with the ball while it is unaware of the player will surprise it, causing it to skip their first turn.
* In the overworld, the player has access to action-related elements such as rolling and diving leaps.
* A feature similar to Ride Pokémon is present, with Hisuian Braviary shown representing flying/soaring, Basculegion representing surfing, Ursaluna representing finding hidden items akin to a [[Dowsing Machine]], and Wyrdeer representing fast overworld movement.
** Some unique actions are shown during this, such as having Hisuian Braviary change its flight {{wp|Aircraft principal axes|pitch}} angle, Basculegion leaping over an land obstruction in the water and down a waterfall, and Wyrdeer jumping.
* Particularly strong Pokémon with angry red eyes, known as [[Alpha Pokémon]], can be found in the overworld and in battle. These Pokémon may be caught, but are far stronger than others of their species and may possess moves they might not be able to learn normally.
*[[Noble Pokémon]], Pokémon sacred to the people of Hisui that have become frenzied through unknown causes, act as boss battles. To defeat a Noble Pokémon, players must throw special Balms to calm it down while avoiding its attacks. Occasionally, the Noble Pokémon will drop its guard and allow the player to engage it in a Pokémon battle; upon reducing its HP to 0, the Noble Pokémon will be temporarily stunned, making Balms more effective and allowing the player to throw them without any risk of being attacked.
* Pokémon can be sent out of their Poké Balls outside of battle; while this can be done no matter what the situation, specific uses include using them to gather materials from trees and mineral deposits, which gives the Pokémon used a slight amount of EXP (depending on the area) and increases their [[friendship]].
* Outside of [[Jubilife Village]], [[Pokémon Center]]s have been replaced by base camps, which allow healing, item purchasing, and the new item [[crafting]] feature.
* The player's [[Bag]] is now referred to as a "satchel". Similar to the bag of [[Generation I]] games, there are a fixed amount of "slots" for items, though the space can be increased by paying a member of the Galaxy Team at the base.
* Completing a Pokédex entry now requires more than just catching a certain Pokémon once, with other requirements varying from multiple catches to seeing a Pokémon use certain moves multiple times.
* The player receives a device called the [[Arc Phone]] early in the story, whose design distinctly resembles Arceus. Using it allows the player to see the area map as well as objectives.
* [[Time]] does not pass according to the [[Nintendo Switch]] clock, and the game uses its own system in which time passes. Players can also skip to a later time by resting.
** Every minute corresponds to an hour in-game. It takes 24 minutes to for an in-game day to pass.
** Every other night that passes changes the [[moon phase]], which is used for the evolution of {{p|Ursaring}} and one side quest involving {{p|Clefairy}}.
* Similar to [[Pokémon: Let's Go, Pikachu! and Let's Go, Eevee!]], EVs and IVs have been replaced by [[effort level]]s.
* The game uses a revised and simplified battle system:
** Moves can be "mastered" by leveling up. A mastered move may be used in the strong style, which increases that move's power but lowers action speed, or in the agile style, which decreases that move's power but raises action speed. Both styles use two [[PP]] instead of one, unless the move has only one PP left.
** The concept of turns has been replaced with an Action Order showing which sides are to get the next six turns.
*** Depending on speed, the use of strong style moves or agile style moves, as well as other factors, one side may get multiple turns in a row.
*** Moves such as {{m|Hyper Beam}}, which in other games require skipping a turn, and moves which have non-standard [[priority]] in other games, affect the Action Order instead.
*** The player is only presented with a menu, and thus has an option to run, switch Pokémon, or use an item, when it is their turn.
** The Freeze and Asleep [[status condition]]s have been removed; they are replaced by the new status conditions Frostbite and Drowsy. Drowsy make the Pokémon less likely to attack instead of preventing them from attacking entirely, as Paralysis does, while Frostbite damages the Pokémon, similar to Burn and Poison.
** Status conditions usually categorized as "non-volatile" expire on their own after several turns. Moreover, a Pokémon that already has such a status condition is not immune to other status conditions, the new condition replaces an existing one instead.
***Burn, Poison, and Frostbite damage after each action by the affected Pokémon, due to the replacement of turns with Action Order.
** Offensive and defensive [[stat]] buffs or debuffs cover both physical and special stats, expire after several turns, and don't stack (using a stat-reducing move several time merely restarts the counter of turns).
** Buffs to evasion and debuffs to accuracy are replaced with a volatile status condition Obscured, which makes the Pokémon harder to hit.
** The following mechanics from previous versions are absent:
*** The ability to [[recall]] Pokémon upon defeating an opposing one (the switch battle style).
*** [[Held item]]s.
****Because of this, all [[evolution items]] that once required being held have become usable items like [[evolution stone|stones]]. This applies to both items that required leveling up while being held (e.g. the [[Razor Claw]]), and that required the Pokémon to be traded while being held (e.g. the [[Metal Coat]]).
*** [[Ability|Abilities]].
**** There are in-game mechanics to simulate {{p|Cherrim}}'s {{a|Flower Gift}}, {{p|Regigigas}}'s {{a|Slow Start}}, and {{p|Arceus}}'s {{a|Multitype}}.
*** [[Entry hazard]]s, with {{m|Spikes}} and {{m|Stealth Rock}} now causing direct damage along with further damage over later turns, similar to {{cat|binding moves}}.
*** [[Double Battle]]s. While the player may battle multiple Pokémon at once, they can never use more than one Pokémon at a time. In addition, they may throw a Poké Ball at any time without having to knock out all but one Pokémon.
*** [[Terrain]]s.
*** [[One-hit knockout move]]s.
*** In-battle bonuses due to [[friendship]] or [[affection]].
* The conditions and mechanics of [[black out|blacking out]] have been changed:
** Pokémon may attack the player in the overworld, and the player may also take damage by falling from high places. Taking too much damage will cause a black out, upon which the player will lose items from their inventory (and none of their money) and return to the last visited camp.
** Blacking out does not occur after losing a Pokémon battle:
*** If the player's entire party is knocked out during a Pokémon battle against a Trainer, the game allows the player to restart the battle, without any penalty.
*** If the player's entire party is knocked out during a wild Pokémon battle, the battle stops and the game continues, with the player unable to defend themselves against aggressive wild Pokémon until at least one of their own Pokémon is revived.

====How I met Pokémon====
I started playing Pokémon when I was seven, I played Fire Red on an emulator, the next year I got Alpha Sapphire, but I lost the card - and I would only play it recently in 2020. In 2016 my father gifted me Pokémon Sun for christmas , and the next year, Ultra Moon, these were the games that really made me go in the community. I can't afford a Switch, so I play Switch games on emulator, I've played Sword, Brilliant Diamond and Legends: Arceus.

The '''Kanto''' region (Japanese: '''{{tt|カントー地方|カントーちほう}}''' ''Kanto-chihō'') is a [[region]] of the [[Pokémon world]]. It forms a joint landmass with the contiguous region of [[Johto]], and (as revealed by the {{DL|Pokégear|radio}} show {{DL|Pokémon Music Channel|Sinnoh Sound}}) are located south of the [[Sinnoh]] region. It was the first region to be introduced. It is the setting of the [[Generation I]] games, {{2v2|FireRed|LeafGreen}}, and [[Pokémon: Let's Go, Pikachu! and Let's Go, Eevee!|Let's Go, Pikachu! and Let's Go, Eevee!]]; it is also accessible in {{game5|Gold|Silver|Crystal|HeartGold|SoulSilver}} after the quest in Johto is completed.

All cities in Kanto are named after colors ([[Viridian City]], [[Lavender Town]], [[Indigo Plateau]], etc.), with the exception of [[Pallet Town]], which is also a reference to color. However, it is not the primary region in the Generation II and IV games it appears in, in which players explore the neighboring Johto region before exploring Kanto.

The artwork of Kanto in [[Generation I]] and [[Generation II]] depict Kanto as grassland, with very few trees. In [[Generation III]], [[Generation IV]], and [[Generation VII]], Kanto is seen with more trees, making it less like grassland.

Regardless of their proximity, the people of Johto and those of Kanto are set apart by many cultural differences. Kanto is based on the real {{wp|Kantō region}} in Japan. Compared to the traditional {{wp|Kansai region}} (where Johto is based), Kanto is modern and technological, which is reflected in the look of the cities and the buildings like the Pokémon Lab of Cinnabar Island and the Power Plant. This fact is also reflected in Kanto being the only Pokémon region without any legends, myths, or traditions related to Pokémon, and being the centerpoint for innovation, with the Poké Ball's ultimate upgrade, the [[Master Ball]], being recently invented by Silph Co. The soil of the Kantō region is volcanic, referencing the in-game Kanto region's inability to maintain a [[Berry]] crop in [[Generation II]], [[Generation III]], and [[Generation IV]]. People from Kanto are considered to be sophisticated, reserved and formal. Kansai and Kantō, however different, are the two most populous areas of Honshū, the largest island in Japan, and, much like Johto and Kanto, represent a harmony of contrasting cultures living together. The cultural divide is most noticeable in the games, as the player talks to and learns about the denizens of both regions.

Tokyo, which the commercial Celadon City and the financial Saffron City are based on, is the most important commercial and economic center of Japan. Yokohama, which Vermilion City is based on, is the main and largest seaport of Japan.

The Kanto region is home to a lot of Pokémon and has a rich history of creating Pokémon with technology.

Researchers of Kanto have been great at their job. [[Mr. Fuji|A researcher]] once cloned {{p|Mew}} through its genes and created the Genetic Pokémon {{p|Mewtwo}}. {{p|Porygon}}, the Virtual Pokémon, was also created by humans in Kanto.

In contemporary history, {{ga|Red}}/{{ga|Leaf}} is given a Pokémon by [[Professor Oak]] for personal safety. Professor Oak also gives his grandson, {{ga|Blue}}, a Pokémon and asks Blue and Red/Leaf to help him fill the Pokédex, a complete encyclopedia on Pokémon. Thus, the journey of Red/Leaf begins. Red/Leaf travels across the Kanto region and collects all eight Gym Badges. During their journey, Red/Leaf comes across [[Team Rocket]], an evil organization behind wrongdoings about Pokémon. Red/Leaf stops Team Rocket and defeats [[Giovanni]], their boss as well as the Gym Leader of [[Viridian Gym]], who then disbands Team Rocket. In the meantime, Blue, who has also collected all of the Kanto Gym Badges, defeats the [[Elite Four]] at the [[Indigo League]] and becomes the champion of the Kanto region. Finally, Red/Leaf makes it up to him and defeats him to gain the title of the Indigo League Champion.

Three years later, {{ga|Ethan}}/{{ga|Kris}}/{{ga|Lyra}}, a Trainer from Johto, comes to Kanto and collects all eight Kanto Gym Badges. Ethan/Kris/Lyra is the current Indigo League Champion and has also met and defeated Red.

The Kanto region has a very temperate climate and not many notable landscape features, though this may be due to the region's origins in the [[Generation I]] games.

The majority of the Kanto region are forests and plains. Many of the major Kanto cities are in the center of the region, with close access to virtually every environment such as the sea, mountains, forests, etc. Kanto is mostly dominated by land, but has a large bay in the middle which opens to a sea in the southwest. Kanto has a contrast between urban cities and rural towns. Kanto has several mountain ranges, which are mostly in northern and western Kanto. [[Indigo Plateau]] and {{ka|Victory Road}} mountain range divides Kanto from the neighboring [[Johto]] region.

Including all the cities and towns in the Kanto region, the total population in [[Pokémon Red and Blue Versions|Red, Blue]], [[Pokémon Yellow Version|Yellow]], {{2v2|FireRed|LeafGreen}} is 391, while in [[Pokémon Gold and Silver Versions|Gold, Silver]], [[Pokémon Crystal Version|Crystal]], {{2v2|HeartGold|SoulSilver}}, the population is 364.

===Notable locations===
The Kanto region features ten [[List of cities and towns|towns and cities]]. There is a wide variety of towns and cities throughout the region; from the large, urban [[Saffron City]] to the quiet, quaint town of {{to|Pallet}}. Kanto features a [[Pokémon League]], like most other regions in the [[Pokémon world]]. However, since Kanto shares its borders with [[Johto]], it also shares the same Pokémon League. Kanto and Johto are the only known regions that can be crossed with relative ease. Even though Kanto and Johto are culturally and socially different, the two regions are actually very similar in terms of geography.

The Kanto region includes 28 different routes, which act as roads to cities and towns or points of interest. The Johto region follows Kanto's route number which ends at {{rt|28|Kanto}} in the Kanto region and begins with Johto's {{rt|29|Johto}}. Unlike other regions, Kanto does not have routes featuring any sort of weather conditions, such as [[Hoenn]]'s {{rt|119|Hoenn}} which rains and thunders constantly and [[Sinnoh]]'s {{rt|217|Sinnoh}} in which hail regularly falls. The Kanto region seems to have the most temperate climate of the [[Region|eight main regions]].

The connecting landmass between Kanto and Johto does not appear to be a fine line, but more or less a blurry one. Route 28 is technically owned by Kanto; however, it bridges the border between the two regions, making it the only route in history that enters two regions at one time. This is similar to Routes 26 and 27, that are strictly Kanto locations; however, they are able to be transported to via {{HM|02|Fly}} from Johto in Generation IV.

According to [[Professor Oak]], a stone tablet was discovered in Kanto, like the one that is able to summon {{p|Shaymin}} on {{rt|224|Sinnoh}} in [[Sinnoh]]. This is mentioned during the event in which {{player}}s {{pkmn2|caught|catch}} {{p|Shaymin}} in {{game2|Diamond|Pearl|Platinum}}, but the Kanto stone tablet is not seen in any game.

===Differences between generations===
Between Generation I and Generation III, Kanto is very much the same with some alterations in respect to the improved graphics and gameplay in the remakes. Additionally in FireRed and LeafGreen, a chain of islands known as the [[Sevii Islands]], located far south of mainland Kanto, are unlocked throughout the {{player}}'s quest, with the first three accessible once Blaine is defeated on Cinnabar Island. Becoming the [[Pokémon Champion]] and getting the [[National Pokédex]] unlocks the other islands which make up this archipelago.

In the Generation II games as well as {{2v2|HeartGold|SoulSilver}}, Trainers may travel from Johto to Kanto and notice that changes have occurred as a result of three years having passed since the time of the Generation I games and {{2v2|FireRed|LeafGreen}}:

* The Safari Zone has closed as a result of [[Baoba|the warden]] taking a trip. In Generation II, it is simply inaccessible during normal gameplay while it has been relocated to Johto in Generation IV, with the original area now housing a [[Pal Park]].
* [[Cerulean Cave]], also known as "Unknown Dungeon" has collapsed in [[Generation II]], but in [[Generation IV]], however, it has re-excavated.
* Cinnabar Island has been destroyed by an eruption of the volcano, and its Gym has been relocated to the Seafoam Islands.
* In Generation II only, Viridian Forest became drastically smaller and was a part of [[Kanto Route 2|Route 2]].
* Mt. Moon has greatly decreased in size due to rock slides.
* The Power Plant has become functional.
* The Pokémon Tower has become a radio tower. The Pokémon graves it housed have been moved to the [[House of Memories]].
* Blue has taken over Viridian Gym since Giovanni's retreat for training and remodeled the Gym to suit his tastes.

The Sevii Islands follow a trend set by {{game|Gold and Silver|s}}, and provide most of the post-Pokémon League plot in {{game|FireRed and LeafGreen|s}}. The Sevii Islands sideplot actually begins as soon as the {{player}} has defeated the [[Cinnabar Gym]] and obtained the {{Badge|Volcano}}. The first three islands, {{isl|One}}, {{isl|Two}}, and {{isl|Three}}, are the only ones that are initially accessible, but the plot here is important for continuing the game. By obtaining the [[National Pokédex]] (and subsequently retrieving the {{i|Ruby}}), the later islands are unlocked.

There is also a plot by [[Team Rocket]] based in the Sevii Islands. It deals with Pokémon evolution, and appears to be the prelude to a plot that is [[Pokémon HeartGold and SoulSilver Versions|launched three years later]]. Only when the Team Rocket members realize that the player has already defeated Giovanni, who subsequently disbanded Team Rocket, do they give up.
