Isaac was a student in [[Kincaid|Mr. Kincaid]]'s class in the [[Ranger school]], where he was allowed to go off to the library to learn on his own due to his IQ of 163. He was next seen with Mr. Kincaid doing an experiment in his secret basement laboratory. After graduation, he went to Pueltown with his sister, {{ra|Melody}}. He seemed to do 8-digit multiplications easily in his mind, which is quite abnormal for an average human. He is also known for his mushroom-like hairstyle.

He began working for [[Altru Inc.]] after graduation. When they first arrived to his workplace, he showed the player and [[Murph]] around the [[Altru Building|building]]. He then leaves with [[Blake Hall]] for work.

He was briefly mentioned when Kincaid was boasting about the [[Miniremo units]], in which Kincaid described him as a little boy who possessed intelligence of the kind that only appears once in a century. He was later seen working for [[Team Dim Sun]] under false promises that their machines make Pokémon and people friends. During his stay with Team Dim Sun, he apparently taught the [[Sinis Trio]] basic programming. A Dim Sun minion could be seen singing the Miniremo production song; he mentioned "The creator of this thing is no hack.. His name rhymes and it is... Whoa! A Ranger?" Isaac's name rhymes with the word 'hack'.

Isaac did not seem to recognize that [[Sven]] considered him a criminal and was happy to see that Sven is going to send him to [[Professor Hastings]]. He also attempted to show the player his experiment with {{p|Skuntank}} and also wondered why the player treats Dim Sun Grunts badly. After learning that the [[Incredible Machine]] is actually a machine to control the Pokémon of [[Almia]], he became worried as Team Dim Sun Admins try to attack him. Fortunately, Sven protected him while the player captured a {{p|Gliscor}} under Kincaid's command.

After that incident, he decided to work at the [[Ranger Union]], when he was offered a deal after telling them the [[Incredible Machine]]'s design disc's password. He attended the meeting to reveal that the [[Altru Tower]] is, in fact, the Incredible Machine.

Later, the Sinis Trio attacked the Ranger Union to take him back. While [[Sinis Trio#Heath|Heath]] distracted the player with an {{p|Electivire}} to capture, [[Sinis Trio#Ice|Ice]] was reminding him of memories of Altru and how they were friends; however, Isaac refused, which forced [[Sinis Trio#Lavana|Lavana]] to interfere. Because she was threatening his sister Melody, he returned to Altru.

He was later seen under pressure from Dim Sun admins programming the Incredible Machine. When the player arrived to this scene, they were eventually tasked to capture Pokémon under their command. Nevertheless, when the player showed up to stop Isaac, it was too late; he had finished the "wicked" program. Isaac accompanied the player to destroy the barriers created by Team Dim Sun by deactivating the program to allow the player to perform a Target Clear, notably doing this to Heath and Lavana's programs in 1.3 and 1.2 seconds, respectively. However, he eventually became trapped by a barrier created by Ice. In the end, [[Barlow]] managed to free him by damaging the generator using his "Trademark [[Field Move]]".

Isaac's sister, Melody, currently lives with their grandparents and a {{p|Buneary}} in a house in [[Pueltown]]. As he is busy with his work, he cannot spend much time with her. However, he loves his sister very much. Her name is Isaac's password in Altru Building's elevator, as well as the Incredible Machine's design disc. At the end of the game, he received a day off and plays the whole day with his sister. However, she recently became too old for the role, and Melody had to reluctantly take over. Melody met {{Ash}}, {{an|Misty}}, {{Tracey}} and [[Maren]] at the docks of [[Shamouti Island]], dressed in casual clothes. It was her turn to lead the annual [[Legend Festival]] as the Festival Maiden, since her older sister [[Carol]] was too old. Melody was not too thrilled to do it, but upon observing Ash and learning he was a [[Pokémon Trainer]], she instantly changed her mind and accepted her role, welcoming Ash with a "traditional welcome kiss", touching a nerve of Misty's. During the festival dinner, Melody later informed Ash of his goal to retrieve three glass balls from the surrounding islands and bring them to the island's shrine.

Melody escorted Misty, and Tracey on her boat to find Ash when a storm hit the island. They located Ash on [[Fire Island]] with {{TRT}}, after which they all witnessed the arrival of {{DL|Legendary birds (M02)|Zapdos}} and its conversation with {{AP|Pikachu}}. Just then, they were kidnapped by [[Lawrence III]]'s airship. After Lawrence III explained his intent to collect all of the [[legendary birds]] and {{p|Lugia}}, Melody began to suspect the legend of the island might be true. This was confirmed later on when {{OBP|Lugia|M02}} appeared to stop the legendary birds as they fought against one another. Ash set out using the remains of Melody's destroyed boat to gain the final treasure ball from Ice Island. However, when Lugia and Ash disappear into the sea, Melody allowed Misty to go out and find Ash. In the process, the two formed a friendship, as Melody had previously joked repeatedly about Misty and Ash being [[PokéShipping|a couple]]. Eventually, Misty became one of the [[Gym Leader]]s of the Cerulean Gym alongside her sisters. She continued following Ash as he headed for [[Pewter City]], telling him in ''[[EP005|Showdown in Pewter City]]'' that she would continue following him until she was paid back for the bike.

Consequently, Misty traveled around the [[Kanto]] [[region]], the [[Orange Islands]], and the [[Johto]] region with Ash. Earlier in the series, she mentioned getting her bicycle replaced several times. By the end of the [[Indigo League]], however, Misty seemed to have forgotten about the bicycle, indicating that her real reason for following along with Ash was that she simply wanted to remain with her friends. While traveling with Ash, Misty often acted as his coach in [[Pokémon battle]]s.

Ash and Misty were later joined by {{an|Brock}}, from ''Showdown in Pewter City'' to ''[[EP083|Poké Ball Peril]]'' and again from the end of ''[[EP116|The Rivalry Revival]]'' to the end of the original series, and {{Tracey}} from ''[[EP084|The Lost Lapras]]'' to ''The Rivalry Revival''. When she and Brock were both traveling with Ash, Misty would pull Brock away by his ear when he approached a beautiful woman. This began in ''[[EP036|The Bridge Bike Gang]]'' and ''[[EP069|Lights, Camera, Quack-tion]]'', and became far more frequent while they were in Johto.

In ''[[EP007|The Water Flowers of Cerulean City]]'', Misty challenged Ash to a [[Gym]] battle after her sisters at the Cerulean Gym nearly gave Ash a {{badge|Cascade}} without a battle and to prove she was as good a Pokémon Trainer as her sisters. Ash and Misty each defeated one Pokémon, but {{TRT}} interrupted the match when they tried to steal the Gym's Water Pokémon. Misty's sisters awarded Ash a Badge when Pikachu saved the Gym with its {{m|Thunderbolt}}, over Misty's objections.

In ''[[EP019|Tentacool & Tentacruel]]'', while waiting for the next ferry to the mainland, Misty saw a large group of {{p|Tentacool}} and a {{pkmn2|giant}} {{p|Tentacruel}} attacking [[Porta Vista]] after human activity destroyed their homes. She convinced the Tentacool and Tentacruel to stop attacking the port, and the humans would no longer occupy Tentacool and Tentacruel's homes in the reef and caught a {{TP|Misty|Horsea}} as well.

Misty became the first main character to look after a [[baby Pokémon]] in ''[[EP050|Who Gets to Keep Togepi?]]'', when the egg that Ash had found in ''[[EP046|Attack of the Prehistoric Pokémon]]'' hatches into a {{TP|Misty|Togepi}}. It imprinted on Misty as its mother when she became the first thing it saw, even after Ash won a tournament to decide who got to keep it. Misty would carry Togepi around without a Poké Ball for the rest of the series.

In ''[[EP103|Misty Meets Her Match]]'', Misty was given a chance to stay in the [[Orange Islands]] when [[Rudy]], the Gym Leader on [[Trovita Island]], offered to let her stay with him. Misty considered the offer, but she ultimately chose to keep traveling with Ash and supported him in his battle against Rudy.

In ''[[EP256|Just Add Water]]'', Misty met a Water-type Trainer named [[Dorian]], after discovering that he is a fan of her sisters, Misty challenged him to a battle. After defeating Team Rocket and ending her battle with Dorian in a draw, Dorian was impressed with Misty's battle skills.

In ''[[EP273|Gotta Catch Ya Later!]]'', Misty returned to the Viridian City Pokémon Center and learned that her bicycle was repaired by the city's [[Nurse Joy]]. Misty was shown to be sad that she no longer had the convenient excuse to travel with Ash — especially when she saw that Ash hadn't learned that and had assumed she followed him because of her bike. In addition, her sisters {{an|Daisy}}, {{ka|Lily}}, and {{an|Violet}}, called Misty at this time to tell her they were going on a world tour, and needed her to return to Cerulean and watch the Gym in their absence. However, Misty saw how Ash truly cared for her when he saved her from a trio of [[Invincible Pokémon Brothers|Pokémon gangsters]]. Misty wanted to stay with Ash, but felt it was her responsibility to take over the Gym, which would be shut down if it was left unattended.

Upon the return of her sisters, Misty remained the sole Cerulean [[Gym Leader]]. Since their return, only Daisy appears to spend a significant amount of time at the Gym. While working in the Gym, Misty sometimes receives help from Tracey when he is either visiting or running an errand for {{an|Professor Oak}}.

It was revealed in ''[[HS02|Cerulean Blues]]'' that Misty feared {{p|Gyarados}}, having climbed into one's mouth as a baby, and that she doubted her own ability to run Cerulean Gym alone. Whilst Brock remained at the Pokémon Center, Misty accompanied Ash and the others to [[Treasure Island]], where they enjoyed [[Mantine Surf]]ing and playing with the Pokémon before the villainous obstacle Team Rocket trio attempted to steal the {{p|Mantine}}. However, with the help of Gyarados and several [[Z-Move]]s, she and the others managed to blast Team Rocket off, foiling their every plan.

Afterward, Misty decided to rejoin Ash on his journey. She also explained that she decided to go on a new journey, and left the gym under the care of her sisters.

After everything was resolved, Brock joined the group and they said goodbye to Cilan who went back to travel alone.

In ''[[JN143|Ride, Lapras, Ride!]]'', Misty joined Ash to rescue a {{p|Wailmer}} that was trapped in a mountain. During the rescue, the Pokémon evolved into a {{p|Wailord}}, which made everything more difficult. With Ash's Pokémon, Misty, and Brock, and their respective Trainers working together, they were able to rescue the huge Pokémon.

In ''[[JN144|Getting to the Heart of it All!]]'', Misty joined Ash to give {{p|Banette}} a new heart-shaped hair tie. Ash decided that Misty should give her heart-shaped hair tie to Banette, and she agreed. After a long search for Banette, Ash gave Misty's heart-shaped hair tie to {{p|Banette}}. However, Ash and his friends decided that he and his friends should look for its owner. They scattered around with no hope, leading them to become tired and decide to continue the search the next day. But when Brock realized that Banette's owner was Nurse Joy, they organized a reunion that finally happened.

In ''[[JN145|Rocket Revengers!]]'', Misty attempted to aid [[James's Mime Jr.]], who seemingly defected from its Trainer, in locating [[Officer Jenny]] to refer their latest plot. She held off [[James's Yamask]] and [[Jessie's Frillish]] with her Staryu and Psyduck to allow Ash, Pikachu, and Mime Jr. to continue onward. Soon afterward, however, she and the others deduced something was off and then discovered Mime Jr.'s defection was faked as part of a trap against Pikachu. She eventually witnessed {{an|Latias}}' appearance, recognizing it from what Ash relayed to her and Brock about his earlier encounter with her. She also witnessed her psychic vision of her friend {{p|Latios}} escaping confinement.

Misty also tended to get very angry whenever {{Ash}} got their party lost, especially in forests. She is very extreme in most of her moods, and she abruptly switches between her emotions. However, as time went on, Misty mellowed and her hyperactive personality was reduced significantly by the end of the [[original series]]. In the Japanese version, she uses the pronoun Atashi in reference to herself.

She is also picky, sensitive, nosy, and grumpy about love. There are many episodes where she is seen getting along with the younger siblings of the family, namely [[Mikey]], [[Sakura]], and [[Max]]. This stems from the fact that she understands what it's like to be the youngest because she has three older sisters.

She is shown to have a somewhat vain side to her, often referring to herself as an "internationally known beauty" ('''世界の美少女''' ''the world's most beautiful girl'') in introductions to others. It is implied that this trait was a result of her inferiority complex towards her older sisters. However, this trait was mostly excluded from the [[dub]] until {{aniseries|SM}}.

[[Fishing]] is one of her hobbies, and she even has a {{TP|Misty|special lure}}, which she designed to look like herself. Misty has developed a more rounded battle strategy since becoming the full-time Cerulean Gym Leader, mirroring many of Ash's methods. During {{aniseries|RS}}, Misty was shown to become increasingly confident and focused on her role as the Cerulean [[Gym Leader]]. ''[[HS02|Cerulean Blues]]'' saw her overcome her fear and help calm a raging {{TP|Misty|Gyarados}} which now serves as one of her main Pokémon, while Misty learned about the Gym Badge-making process and began to appreciate her role in ''[[HS05|The Blue Badge of Courage]]''. She continues to improve her Pokémon as seen with {{TP|Misty|Psyduck}}'s mastery of {{m|Water Gun}} and her {{TP|Misty|Corsola}}'s strong defenses make for a tireless battle.

The one Pokémon [[type]] that Misty cannot stand are {{type|Bug}}s, as shown in ''[[EP003|Ash Catches a Pokémon!]]'' and more recently in ''[[JN141|A Squad’s Worth of Passion!]]''. The only Bug-type Pokémon Misty is not afraid of are the kinds that she deems "cute" or "pretty", like {{p|Ledyba}} and {{p|Butterfree}}, some belonging to her friends, like [[Tracey's Venonat]], or ones that don't look like bugs, such as {{p|Pineco}}. However, Bug Pokémon are only one of three things Misty strongly dislikes, the other two being {{wp|carrot}}s and {{wp|Bell pepper|peppers}}. When asked how she feels about dual-typed Bug/Water Pokémon, such as {{p|Dewpider}}, Misty replied "that's a tough one".

Her catchphrase when sending out a Pokémon is ('''いくわよ！マーイステディ！''' ''Go! My Steady!''). Like her "beauty" title, this was not carried over into the dub until ''Sun & Moon''.

Early into the series, she was shown to have a more pragmatic view on battling, which is best demonstrated in the third episode where she agreed to Ash fighting against Team Rocket despite the specific battle technically being illegal because it ultimately had the best chances of Ash not losing quickly, and also her disappointment that Ash proceeded to forfeit against Brock instead of taking the lucky advantage against him during his rematch.

Either through the tradition of her family's Gym or merely her love of them, Misty prefers to train {{type|Water}} Pokémon. She usually bases her choice of Pokémon to train by looks, preferring Pokémon that she thinks of as "cute" over ones that she thinks are "ugly," but is willing to overcome such differences.

Her love of Water Pokémon stems from the fact that they are extremely flexible in battle, meaning that they can easily adapt to the opponent, as she stated in ''[[EP240|Some Like It Hot]]''. Since becoming a Gym Leader, she has overcome her fear of {{p|Gyarados}} and continues to learn more about caring and battling with Water Pokémon as challengers come to the [[Cerulean Gym]].

As an experienced Water-type Pokémon Trainer, Misty has access to many powerful Pokémon and mechanics such as [[Mega Evolution]]. This allows her to be able to battle other powerful Trainers like [[Dorian]], [[Trinity]], or Ash in equal conditions.

She travels with Ash for the following chapter, ''[[ET02|Play Misty For Me]]'', expecting Ash to repay her for her bike. Later, when Ash arrives in [[Cerulean City]], he battles her instead of the [[Sensational Sisters]]. Misty awards Ash the {{Badge|Cascade}} when his {{AP|Fearow}} takes back his {{AP|hat}} from Misty's head.

For instance, she would use her {{TP|May|Combusken}}'s {{m|Fire Spin}} and her {{TP|May|Squirtle}}'s {{m|Bubble}} to create a combination of fire and water, dubbed "Fire and Water Whirlwind" by [[Lilian Meridian|Lilian]], after witnessing [[Tucker]] use it against Ash with a combination of {{m|Water Pulse}} and {{m|Fire Blast}}. This even made a [[Harley|rival]] of hers angry, thinking she thought he was not worthy of the move as May did not use it against him.

She also developed a love for making her own [[Pokéblock]]s with recipes that she thought up, including ones called "May's Purple Surprise" and "May's Pink Surprise" (Japanese: ''Haruka's Delicious'' and ''Haruka's Delicious 2''). Unfortunately, the only ones who liked her "Purple Surprise" were her {{TP|May|Munchlax}} and [[Jessie]]. Her "Pink Surprise" came from the recipe {{an|Professor Oak}} uses to make [[Ash's Snorlax]]'s {{pkmn|food}}. Thus, after May [[AG118|first fed]] it to her Munchlax, it was automatically made full. During her journey, she found a [[rival]] in [[Drew]], a skilled and sometimes arrogant Coordinator. Drew became one of her main inspirations to try harder to sharpen her skills as a Coordinator. At first, Drew had claimed that May had "no style" as a Coordinator, but by the end of May's second Contest campaign, when she defeated him in the [[Kanto Grand Festival]], he recognized her growth and skill. Another rival of hers, [[Harley]], is a flamboyant man who goes to extremes to beat May and has no qualms about cheating or using unfair tactics. An example of Harley's depravity was seen in ''[[AG103|A Cacturne for the Worse]]'', when he recorded Max telling him a story from May's childhood. May had been wearing a blue swimming cap in the ocean, and her mother had mistaken her for a {{p|Tentacool}} from afar and attempted to {{pkmn2|caught|catch}} May with one of her {{i|Poké Ball}}s. Harley played the recording of this story during the [[Izabe Island]] Pokémon Contest to embarrass May into losing. May was able to beat Harley in the end, but she claimed that she had never been more humiliated. At the Kanto Grand Festival, May also competed against [[Solidad]], an experienced Coordinator to whom she lost in the semifinals. At the end of ''[[Pokémon the Series: Ruby and Sapphire]]'', she left to compete with Drew, Harley, and Solidad in the [[Johto]] [[region]], aiming to find her own battling style. The decision to stop traveling with Ash was an important one for May's character. Because Ash played the role of a mentor to her through most of the series, she was largely influenced by his offensive battle style. By the end of their journey through Kanto, May had realized that an offensive style was not necessarily the best for her and for Contests. May's harsh words to Max made him declare that he hated May and he ran away for a portion of the episode. Even though she had been angry, May quickly felt guilty for hurting Max's feelings and became very worried that he would be hurt on his own. As she, Max and Ash were hungry, she was the one who asked Brock if he could prepare some food for them. If a person or a Pokémon were to steal her food she would become extremely angry, which was demonstrated numerous times. Food was one of the few things May would become angry about, so it was an important tool to show a different side to her usually cheerful character. When May returned for ''Pokémon the Series: Diamond and Pearl'', she expressed excitement over the chance to eat at the [[Seven Stars Restaurant]], but having her meal stolen made her enraged. She was later shown enjoying a large cookie, once again affirming her love of food and sweets.

He brought along a pile of {{Berries}}, which attracted the {{p|Zigzagoon}}'s attention. They got angry when Max ran out of Berries; and Ash, May, {{an|Brock}}, and Nicholai arrived to save Max. When Nicholai led the Zigzagoon away from the group, Max apologized for his actions earlier.

Max took a liking to {{OBP|Katrina|AG011}}'s {{p|Poochyena}} in ''[[AG011|A Bite to Remember]]''. Seeing that Katrina owned three {{p|Mightyena}}, Max attempted to get Poochyena to [[Evolution|evolve]]. He {{pkmn|training|trained}} it with May's Torchic, but was unsuccessful due to Torchic attacking both Max and Poochyena. Max then ran off with Poochyena after Ash told him that some Pokémon are happy the way they are. When Poochyena was caught by Team Rocket, Max encouraged it to bite through the net to free itself and the other Pokémon as well. Afterwards, Poochyena was able to evolve into Mightyena.

In ''[[AG015|Gonna Rule the School!]]'', Max spent a day at [[Roxanne]]'s {{pkmn|Trainers' School}}, where he battled {{OBP|Tommy|AG015}}'s {{p|Magby}} using a {{p|Poliwag}}. He used the strategy in increasing Poliwag's defense as much as possible with {{m|Defense Curl}}, but this backfired when Magby's repeated attacks began to wear Poliwag down.

In ''[[AG046|Candid Camerupt]]'', Max borrowed [[Ash's Corphish]] during the battle with [[Winstrate family|Vivi]], who had a crush on him. Since Corphish was Ash's Pokémon, Corphish recklessly attacked {{p|Marill}} even though Max wanted Corphish to go easy on Marill. This victory caused Vivi to no longer be interested in him.

Max met [[Doppelgänger|a lookalike]] with the [[Max (AG049)|same name]] as him in ''[[AG049|Maxxed Out!]]''. Both of them were fighting when the brown-haired one criticized the blue-haired Max about how only skilled Trainers can handle {{TP|May|Skitty}} as he thought that the Skitty was his. Max met up with the brown-haired Max by the lake when a {{p|Surskit}} was dancing around there. May suggested to both Maxes that they should be friends but it resulted in them fighting. When Team Rocket arrived with their goal in catching Surskit for their {{an|Giovanni|boss}}, the blue-haired Max and the brown-haired one went off and found Surskit as it ran away. They found it in a new water spring located in the forest. When Team Rocket returned to capture the Surskit, both Maxes worked together to take on the trio and Surskit finished them off. After Team Rocket's defeat, both Maxes became friends and the brown-haired Max promised the blue-haired one that he will become a Trainer someday.

In ''[[AG081|Take This House and Shuppet]]'', Max and {{ashfr|the gang}} went to a mansion. He separated from the group after he got into a sibling rivalry with May when they both accused each other of ending up in the mansion. When Max was still upset about May, a {{p|Shuppet}} covered him with red aura and Max noticed it. They played with each other and Shuppet showed Max a secret room containing a playground. Still mad about May, Max had Shuppet play a prank on Ash, May, and Brock by lifting up items in the kitchen when the three were headed there. When Team Rocket was about to get May's Torchic, Max blocked their way until May arrived. Max stood back as May took things from there with her Torchic and was about to get crushed by a falling shelf until Shuppet saved them by lifting the shelf.

Max found an injured {{p|Ralts}} in ''[[AG109|Do I Hear a Ralts?]]''. He took it back to the campsite where {{AP|Snorunt}} successfully cheered it up using [[Ash's hat]] and Max's glasses. Max took Ralts to a [[Pokémon Center]] after Brock pointed out that Ralts was running a {{DL|Illness in the Pokémon world|fever}}. While Ash, May, and Brock were battling Team Rocket when they were attempting to steal Ralts for their boss, Max made a run for the Pokémon Center with Snorunt tagging along. Along the way, Max dealt with Team Rocket again but they were stopped by Ralts's friends, a {{p|Kirlia}} and a {{p|Gardevoir}}. Max explained to them about Ralts's condition but Kirlia was about to attack him until Ralts protected him with {{m|Safeguard}} despite being in worse condition. In ''[[AG171|Pokémon Ranger - Deoxys' Crisis! Parts 1]]'' and ''[[AG172|2]]'', Max went with the group and [[Solana]] to a cave where they found out about a meteorite relating to {{an|Deoxys}}. Max was willing to communicate with it and Deoxys took him and {{MTR}} to [[Deoxys's unnamed world|another dimension]]. Deoxys possessed Meowth as it explained to Max that it was scared during the space flight. Deoxys then explained to Max about the meteor landing and outer space, and that it was alone without a friend to hangout with. When Ash and his friends arrived in the cave again, [[Ash's Swellow]] and {{AP|Sceptile}}, [[May's Combusken]], and [[Brock's Marshtomp]] signaled their arrival and Max was happy to see them again. When Deoxys battled the group outside the cave, it caused some friction inside the alternate dimension that made Max and Meowth bounce around. However, they were able to get out with the help of May and [[Jessie]]. After the battle, Deoxys possessed Meowth again where it thanked Max for everything and fled off, wanting to explore the planet even more.

At the end of {{aniseries|RS}}, May announced that she wished to travel to the [[Johto]] [[region]] alone. This initially upset Max but Ash cheered him up with the promise of a battle between the two when Max becomes a [[Pokémon Trainer]]. In his debut episode, Max was a bit of a know-it-all who was proud of his book smarts. For example, in ''[[AG005|In the Knicker of Time!]]'', Max did not approve of how {{Ash}} had used {{AP|Pikachu}} in {{pkmn|battle}} and spent a portion of the episode lecturing him on what he thought was a better way to command the Pokémon. He can also be quite petty and vindictive, going out of his to try and ruin [[Nicholai]]'s attempts on catching a {{p|Zigzagoon}} simply because he felt insulted when Nicholai claimed that defeating [[Norman]] would be easy based on {{an|May}}'s lack of battling experience since she is his daughter. But despite this attitude, Max was not a close-minded person and was always eager to learn about Pokémon first-hand. He would become particularly excited when he could experience a {{OBP|Pokémon|species}}'s [[move]] or [[Ability]], such as {{an|Jigglypuff}}'s {{m|Sing}} or {{p|Sharpedo}}'s {{a|Rough Skin}}.

Over the course of ''[[Pokémon the Series: Ruby and Sapphire]]'', Max went under {{an|Brock}}'s tutelage for real-world knowledge of Pokémon and how to [[Pokémon training#Caretaking|care]] for them. He developed a friendly relationship with Brock, though he did adopt {{an|Misty}}'s habit for yanking him by the ear whenever Brock saw a pretty woman, particularly after meeting Misty himself. Despite getting off to a rocky start with Ash, Max truly admires him as something akin to the big brother he never had and has proven it on numerous occasions. Over time, Max saw how Ash's unorthodox battle strategies could be beneficial, and by the end of his travels through [[Kanto]], Max was no longer criticizing Ash's battling style.

He shares a deep bond with his older sister, May, and their bond only grew stronger while they traveled together through Hoenn with Ash and Brock. He is very proud of May's accomplishments as a [[Pokémon Coordinator]] and is always cheering for her when she takes part in a [[Pokémon Contest]]. However, the siblings were occasionally aggressive towards each other, like when Max told [[Harley]] embarrassing stories about May.

Another example occurred in the {{pkmn|movie}} ''[[M06|Jirachi: Wish Maker]]'', when May asked {{OBP|Jirachi|M06}} to "get rid of the problem," referring to the large pile of candy in the room. Jirachi, who was reading Max's thoughts, {{m|teleport}}ed May away, which suggests that Max had been thinking that May was the real problem. Despite their arguments, the two siblings care for each other very much.

The question of Max's [[first partner Pokémon]] was raised a number of times while he was traveling in Hoenn. Among the Hoenn first partner Pokémon, he said that he would have chosen a {{p|Treecko}}. However, in ''[[AG034|Having a Wailord of a Time]]'', he commented that he could really receive anything and imagined himself receiving a {{p|Slakoth}} from his father. Not knowing who his first partner Pokémon would be led to some of the conflict with his [[doppelgänger]], whose name was also {{OBP|Max|AG049}}, in ''[[AG049|Maxxed Out!]]''. At the end of that episode, he stated that Max is lucky that he already knows the Pokémon he will start his {{pkmn|training}} with.

Max finally did meet his future partner in ''[[AG109|Do I Hear a Ralts?]]'' when he befriended a weakened {{p|Ralts}}. Wanting to demonstrate that he could be responsible for a Pokémon, he took care of it and brought it to a [[Pokémon Center]] with a little help from {{AP|Snorunt}}. When Max and Ralts parted ways at the end of the episode, they promised to meet up again when Max was eligible to be a Trainer.

Due to not being a [[Pokémon Trainer]] yet, Max is unable to {{pkmn|training|raise}} his own {{OBP|Pokémon|species}}. Nevertheless, he has befriended a variety of Pokémon during his travels. He has also occasionally borrowed [[May's Munchlax]], such as in ''[[AG159|Off the Unbeaten Path!]]'' when he needed a Pokémon to take part in the [[Pokémon Orienteering]] being held in [[Potpourri Island]].

Despite this, Max has been in a couple of [[Pokémon battle]]s, such as the ones with {{OBP|Tommy|AG015}} and [[Winstrate family|Vivi Winstrate]]. When he battles, he focuses on [[Status move|defensive moves]] such as {{m|Protect}} or {{m|Defense Curl}} instead of offensive, [[damage]]-dealing moves.

Max wanted to feed it and make friends with it, so Ash gave Max some Pokémon food to feed it. Shroomish was suspicious and used Stun Spore, causing Ash and Max to quickly back away in surprise.

Ash and Max noted that Shroomish was in the city instead of the forest, where its kind normally would live. Figuring that it might have been separated from its Trainer, they decided that they should take it to a [[Pokémon Center]]. Max took out a handkerchief and tied it around the top of Shroomish's head as a gift. The gift made Shroomish very happy. Max picked up Shroomish and they headed off.

After another failed [[Ash's Pikachu|Pika]]-{{TRT}} plan, Shroomish, still in Max's arms, got very distressed and ran off. Ash and Max followed it. Shroomish went into the mansion through a broken window. In the end, Shroomish stayed in the mansion with {{OBP|Alex|AG009}} who promised to replant the forest.

She is an energetic girl who loves cooking, but her sense of taste can be peculiar. Her energetic behavior is often demonstrated either in battle and offering the player some encouragement before their trial. In relation to her cooking, she appears to have a taste for certain ingredients such as [[Moomoo Milk]]. Her own dishes can are often considered to be delicious, with the Mallow Special being her signature dish. This dish, while enjoyed by many, can be seen as rather unfavorable to others. It is enjoyed by both people and Pokémon. In [[Pokémon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon]], she can be seen enjoying {{m|Aromatherapy}}. Mallow has a habit of using cooking-related terms in her dialogue. Mallow is great friends with Lana, as seen in Lana's concept art, they are seen doing delieveries together. She admires to be a great chef like [[Siebold]].

Mallow resides in [[Konikoni City]] on Akala Island, along with her father [[Abe]] and older brother [[Ulu]]. She works at her family's restaurant in the city, helping to gather ingredients for the restaurant by finding them at the Lush Jungle trial site. She also helps the business with deliveries. Mallow has plans to take over her family's business. Mallow is a young girl standing at a height of 5'3" (1.60 m). Her hair is a deep green color. A set of bangs, that split into two at their tips, curls down and back up above her forehead. She has two long pigtails hanging from the bottom of her head, reaching down to the bottom of her back. She wears a thin dark-green headband that ties around her forehead. The headband has a green "x" shaped decoration resembling thorns that rests above her curled bangs. Also on the headband, is a giant, pink, flower-like ornament. Mallow has thin green eyebrows matching her hair color. Mallow's large, round eyes contain one eyelash on each, and her irises are the same green color as her hair.

Mallow's outfit is rather simple, being mostly a pair light blue-gray overalls resembling an apron. The overalls have a pair of shoulder straps that go over her shoulders and cross at the back, ending at her lower back. Aside from the shoulder straps, the back of the outfit is mostly open, revealing a pink tube-top. The bottom half of her overalls resembles a pair of shorts that have a strap tying around her wait giving her bow that originates at the connecting seams of her shoulder straps. The pant legs have white frills, looking as if they were purposely cut. At the top of her chest, her overalls contains a single pocket with a white flap, where she hold small items such as berries. She wears a pin on her right hip, resembling the sigil that all captains wear somewhere around their body to indicate their position. This sigil resembles a four-leaf clover with the top leaf colored green. A similar marking is found underneath and imprinted on her right pant leg and colored all white.

Mallow owns a pair of green slip-on shoes with dark green ties. The soles and toes are both white.

Mallow's concept artwork also displays her wearing the [[Forage Bag]] that she offers to the player, however she is never seen wearing the item in-game. Instead her [[Mallow (anime)|animated series counterpart]] wears it as a school bag. This bag is primarily a yellow sack with a dark brownish-yellow bottom. Two brown straps go around the shoulders and end on the bottom half. The yellow part of the rucksack is crosshatched with darker yellow spots. Curious about whether or not Sun was worthy enough to do the island challenge, Kiawe challenged him to a short battle. Though the match ended without a winner, Kiawe bonded with Sun and accepted him as a trialgoer. Lana was still reluctant and told the others to follow her to [[Brooklet Hill]].

In ''[[PASM09|True Identity and the Totem Pokémon of Brooklet Hill]]'', Sun went to have his trial with Lana while Moon went with Mallow to [[Lush Jungle]] so she could harvest special {{Berries}}. After arriving, they found {{p|Tapu Lele}} under attack by a {{p|Xurkitree}} emerging from an [[Ultra Wormhole]]. Moon tried and failed to capture Xurkitree, allowing it to retreat back into the wormhole and escape. After Tapu Lele angrily flew off, Moon decided to get information about what happened by asking the guardian deity directly. With help from the local wild Pokémon, Moon successfully obtained a [[Mirage Berry]]. Mallow received a call from Kiawe, who was attacked by [[Gladion]], who was looking for the [[Ruins of Life]]. Mallow, Moon, Sun, and Lana went to [[Memorial Hill]], where they found an injured Kiawe. When a group of {{tc|Team Skull Grunt}}s appeared, Mallow and Lana stayed behind to battle them while the others went to protect Tapu Lele from Gladion. After the Grunts were defeated, Mallow and Lana reunited with the others after they successfully helped Tapu Lele.

In ''[[PASM14|Flash and Cosmog's Secret]]'', Mallow summoned a Totem {{p|Lurantis}} so Moon could fight it to train and get stronger. After Lurantis was defeated, everyone met at Mallow's family restaurant, where they talked to [[Professor Kukui]]'s wife, [[Professor Burnet]], over a video phone. After suspecting [[Team Skull]] may be related to the wormholes appearing around Alola, Lana suggested infiltrating Team Skull's base in [[Po Town]] to get answers. Mallow and Kiawe reluctantly agreed, but the former suggested asking [[Ilima]] and [[Acerola]] to help them.

In ''[[PASM17|A Raid and Po Town]]'', Mallow, Kiawe, Lana, Acerola, Ilima, and [[Hau]] arrived at Po Town. Their presence alerted Team Skull's boss, [[Guzma]], who demanded to know why his base was being invaded. When the captains revealed they only wanted to talk, Guzma agreed on the condition they made it to him first. He then summoned a {{p|Pheromosa}}, {{p|Celesteela}}, and {{p|Guzzlord}} and had them attack the captains and Hau. Despite their best efforts, Mallow and the others were completely outmatched by the rampaging beasts.

In ''[[PASM18|Confusion and Monsters from Another World]]'', Sun arrived at Po Town, only to get caught up in the commotion. Annoyed the captains were still fighting, Guzma revealed a {{p|Cosmog}} and had it open more wormholes. Gladion appeared, demanding to know where Guzma got the Cosmog and Ultra Beasts from. Revealing his true aim is to destroy Ultra Beasts, Gladion battled the beasts Guzma summoned with his {{TP|Gladion|Type: Null}}. To everyone's shock, Gladion also revealed the [[Aether Foundation]]'s president, [[Lusamine]], was the one who gave Guzma Cosmog as part of her plan to create a paradise filled with nothing but Ultra Beasts and herself. Eventually, the beasts broke out of Po Town's barrier, allowing them to wreak havoc on all of [[Ula'ula Island]]. Mallow and the other captains headed off to various locations to evacuate any innocent civilians caught in the beasts' attacks.

In ''[[PASM26|Adventure in the Dark Dimension]]'', the captains and [[island kahuna]]s were revealed to have spent six months on [[Exeggutor Island]] {{pkmn|training}} to prepare for another clash with the Ultra Beasts. After their training was finished, [[Sophocles]] and [[Molayne]] took everyone to [[Mount Lanakila]], where a wormhole had opened up earlier. Shortly after they arrived, their ship was attacked by a group of Aether Foundation Employees and their Ultra Beasts.
