A '''novelty Pokémon''', also referred to as a '''gimmick Pokémon''', is a term for a [[Pokémon]] species without evolutions, little use in battle, and/or a limited movepool. Such Pokémon usually possess some novel quality about them that makes them unique or interesting but lack the ability to be readily shaped up for battle, causing them to be underused or overlooked. Although nearly all Pokémon can be used in a battle effectively, novelty Pokémon appear to be more added to flesh out the Pokémon world than to be actually used or as fodder for potential evolutions later.

Many of these Pokémon became viable participants in Pokémon Contests after they were introduced in Generation III.

==List of novelty Pokémon==
* With many other Pokémon sharing its type and most of its abilities, {{p|Farfetch'd}} was a novelty Pokémon in the first generation due to the fact it was rare and could only be acquired by trading. Farfetch'd itself is likely a reference to trading; its habit of playing fetch is similar to trading. Farfetch'd also gets its own unique item, the Stick.
* {{p|Ditto}} only has one move — {{m|Transform}} — which lets it copy the appearance, types, and moves of its opponents, but not its stats. It is not very useful in battle, but invaluable in breeding.
* Capable of learning only {{m|Hidden Power|one move}}, {{p|Unown}}'s main purpose in the games is to be collected, a sidequest that consists of finding its 28 [[form differences|forms]].
* {{p|Shuckle}} has very high Defense and Special Defense, making it quite difficult to weaken and good for holding up many attacks. However, it has very low HP, Attack and Special Attack, and, tied with {{p|Munchlax}}, the lowest Speed of any other Pokémon. It is capable of creating valuable [[Rare Candy|Rare Candies]] if one has it hold an [[Oran Berry]].

Unlike other games, Yellow was inspired by the {{pkmn|anime}}, and thus, instead of having a choice between {{p|Bulbasaur}}, {{p|Charmander}}, and {{p|Squirtle}}, players are forced to start off with a {{p|Pikachu}} that [[Professor Oak]] caught on {{rt|1}}. With the {{ga|Blue|rival}} beginning with an {{p|Eevee}}, the player now journeys from Pallet to go through an all-new experience—with no {{t|Grass}}-, {{t|Fire}}-, or {{type2|Water}}s to fall back on until each member of the Kanto starter trio is given to the player later on, about a quarter of the way through the game.

Much like before, players journey across [[Kanto]] from their hometown of [[Pallet Town|Pallet]], defeating the eight [[Gym Leaders]] ([[Brock]] and [[Misty]] do not join the player, unlike in the anime) and eventually the [[Elite Four]].

As well as reprising the ability to allow players to trade Pokémon between two cartridges via a [[Game Boy]] [[link cable]], Yellow also debuted a new link battle mode, Colosseum 2. While battling another player's Pokémon team had been possible since the release of {{game|Red and Green|s}} two years before Yellow's release, Yellow introduced several regulations in Colosseum 2 mode. ==Plot==
Red and Green began the Pokémon series in the region of [[Kanto]], where players became a ten-year-old [[Pokémon Trainer]] just starting off a journey from their home of [[Pallet Town|Masara Town]], on the same day as their {{ga|Blue|rival}}. After obtaining a [[starter Pokémon]] (a choice of the {{type2|Grass}} {{p|Bulbasaur|Fushigidane}}, {{type2|Fire}} {{p|Charmander|Hitokage}}, or {{type2|Water}} {{p|Squirtle|Zenigame}}) from [[Professor Oak|Dr. Okido]], the local authority on Pokémon (and with their rival choosing the Pokémon whose type weakens that of the player), players would journey across the region, defeating the eight Gym Leaders: [[Brock|Takeshi]], [[Misty|Kasumi]], [[Lt. Surge|Matis]], [[Erika]], [[Koga|Kyo]], [[Sabrina|Natsume]], [[Blaine|Katsura]], and [[Giovanni|Sakaki]]. After all eight have been defeated, the player goes on to challenge the Elite Four, [[Lorelei|Canna]], [[Bruno|Shiba]], [[Agatha|Kikuko]], and [[Lance|Wataru]], and finally, in their last battle, the current champion, their rival.

==Connectivity==
The two games introduced the ability to allow players to [[trade]] Pokémon between two cartridges using a [[Game Boy]] [[link cable]]. To take fullest advantage of this feature, several Pokémon are exclusive to each game of the pair, making it required that a person trade with others in order to complete their [[Pokédex]]. The link cable also makes possible battles with another player, allowing one to pit their Pokémon against equals when their Pokémon are as powerful as they can be, at level 100.

Trades done between Pokémon games in different languages are impossible in this generation, and will always result in corruption if it is attempted. This is due to the fact that the games cannot automatically translate the Pokémon as there is not enough room on either cartridge for all of the text in so many languages (a feature that would later become possible).
