Exit (Japanese: とじる Close) was the final selection in the menu accessed by pressing the Start button (or the X button in Generation IV, though the options can be adjusted to allow Start to bring up the menu as well) in all handheld main series Pokémon games, as well as Colosseum and . The Exit command was always the last selection to appear on the menu, regardless of the game. Due to its redundancy, it was removed in and later games.

Functioning
Generations I-III
When selected, quite simply, Exit closes the menu. However, this is a rather redundant command, because the menu can also be closed by pressing the Start button again, or B.

Generation IV
Exit has the same function in , and is portrayed as a reddish circular arrow. The menu can also now be closed by pressing X instead of Start (however it is possible to allow the Start button to open and close the menu as well in ).

In , the Exit is absent due to the menu being accessible via the touch screen at all times, like the Pokétch in . It doesn't appear either if the player opens the menu with the X button (to use the D-pad to navigate). If the player uses the X button to open the menu but uses the stylus to choose an action, the X button at the top of the menu panel serves as the Exit button.

Generation V
There is no distinct Exit button located in the menu of , however one still exists. Players may tap the red X in the bottom right corner of the screen, or press X or B to exit the menu. This red X is found as a universal button throughout many menus of the game that, when pressed, immediately returns the player to the overworld.

Generation VI
As the menu is once again a permanent fixture on the touch screen, there is not an Exit button. If the menu is expanded by pressing X, the white X in the bottom right corner serves the same function. The red X also makes a return as the Exit button for various menus.

Trivia
*The Exit command was the only command on the menu whose purpose can be served by a means other than actually selecting the command and pressing A. In other words, the Exit command was the only redundant command on the menu, hence its removal in .
*The Exit command was one of the few commands to always be present on the menu from the very beginning of the game, along with Bag, the player's name, Save, and Options.
Mechanics
The final digit of the player's Trainer ID determines which of the five men will initially appear in the Mauville City Pokémon Center. The following list details which number corresponds with which man.
*If the trainer's ID ends in 8 or 9, Giddy will appear.

The storyteller
This man, in his own words, "tells tales of legendary Trainers". He tells the player about records they have set as well as those set with other players they have mixed records with. When approached by the player, he will offer them choices of the records they would like to hear about, and will also add a comment about it.
Magical Pokémon Journey (Japanese: ポケットモンスター ＰｉＰｉＰｉ★アドベンチャー Pocket Monsters PiPiPi ★ Adventures) is a ten-volume shōjo manga series by mangaka Yumi Tsukirino. It was serialized in the shōjo magazine Ciao and then published in collected volumes by Shogakukan in Japan.

The story centers around a girl named Hazel who develops a crush on Almond, a Pokémon Trainer from whom she is constantly rebuffed. To receive a love potion from a scientist named Grandpa and thus gain Almond's affection, Hazel agrees to catch Pokémon for his research.

This series chronicles Hazel's attempts to make Almond like her, as well as her friendship with several Pokémon she meets — mainly Pikachu, Clefairy, and Jigglypuff (Pikachu, Pippi, and Purin, for whom the series was named) — and her rivalry with Grandpa's granddaughter, Coconut. Gradually, the focus of the series shifts away from collecting Pokémon and more to the relationship between Hazel and Almond, as well as the relationships between other human characters, between Pokémon, and the friendships of both humans and Pokémon.

Following the completion of the series, Tsukirino created a sequel set in the same world, entitled Pokémon Chamo-Chamo ☆ Pretty ♪. This manga series features Generation III Pokémon.
English translations
In North America, the first forty-three chapters of the manga were published in monthly issues of two to three chapters each by VIZ Media. These chapters were later re-released into seven collected volumes. VIZ Media's translation of Magical Pokémon Journey was printed in a left-to-right format with reversed artwork, as this was how manga was typically localized to Western countries at the time of its release. VIZ Media's translation of Magical Pokémon Journey was available in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Ireland and South Africa; it is currently out of print.

Chuang Yi has also released a translation of the series, continuing to the end of volume ten, past where VIZ Media ended their translation. Unlike VIZ Media's translation, Chuang Yi's version of Magical Pokémon Journey is still available in print. Like VIZ Media's, Chuang Yi's translation is in a left-to-right format with reversed artwork. Chuang Yi's translation of Magical Pokémon Journey is rare but can be available in Singapore, Malaysia, South Asia, the Philippines, Australia and New Zealand.

International translations
In the Greater China region, Magical Pokémon Journey was translated to both Traditional Mandarin as 皮卡丘大冒險:我愛PiPiPi and to Cantonese as PiPiPi寵物小精靈大追逐 by Da Ran Culture. The simplified Chinese version was translated by Yuanfang Publishing House and was based on the Cantonese version.

Magical Pokémon Journey were translated into France by Glénat under the title Pikachu Adventures!. Only the first five volumes were translated. This translation was based on the original Japanese version, however, the artwork was still printed in reverse from the original for publication in France.

In Indonesia, two different editions of Magical Pokémon Journey were released. The first edition was published by m&c! with the title Pokémon PiPiPi Adventure. It is based directly on the Japanese version. Another translation was released by a different publisher, Panda Books. The Panda Books edition was based on Chuang Yi's English translation and was released under the Indonesian title Petualangan Ajaib Pokémon.

Magical Pokémon Journey (Il magico viaggio dei Pokémon) was translated into Italy by Planet Manga, a subsidiary of Panini Comics. Only the first two monthly issues were translated into Italian, based on VIZ Media's first edition.

Magical Pokémon Journey was also translated into Latin America by Toukan Manga. This release is a direct translation of VIZ Media's version, using the same English title "Magical Pokémon Journey" and with all artwork printed in reverse from the original Japanese version.

In Thailand, Magical Pokémon Journey has been translated to Thai with the title โปเกมอน ผจญภัย. All ten volumes have been translated into Thai.
Trivia
*Unlike most Pokémon canon, many Pokémon in Magical Pokémon Journey can speak the human language.
*Ash, Misty, Brock, Tracey and Ash's Pikachu make cameo appearances in bonus chapters.
*Most of the human characters in Magical Pokémon Journey have names based on nuts. Hazel's name is likely based on a Hazelnut. Almond, Peanut, Cashew, Pistachio, and Walnut all have nut-related names, and although Coconut's name is not an actual nut, it is still a reference to the theme of nut-based names in this manga series.
**Apricot and Plum also have similar names, as they are both based on pitted fruits.
*Magical Pokémon Journey is the first Pokémon manga that was aimed at teenage readers in the 13-to-18 age bracket. The later two Pokémon manga whose sharing this target audience are Pokémon Chamo-Chamo ☆ Pretty ♪ and Pokémon RéBURST.
**Additionally, despite these Pokémon manga are aimed at teenage readers, they are serialized in different manga magazines due to slightly different target audience. Magical Pokémon Journey and Pokémon Chamo-Chamo ☆ Pretty ♪ were serialized in Ciao, while Pokémon RéBURST was serialized in Weekly Shōnen Sunday.
Team Dim Sun uses Altru Tower as a cover for their ultimate weapon, the Incredible Machine. The weapon is a giant Gigaremo that is powered by the Shadow Crystal.

The tower's interior is made up of seven floors. The second, third and fourth floors play host to three generators for creating a barrier to guard the tower's peak. The generators, colored respectively in yellow, red and blue, are guarded by the members of the Sinis Trio. On the fifth floor, special black Gigaremo units restrain a mysterious shadow that is actually Darkrai. The sixth floor only contains a Save Machine and the stairs to the roof.

Altru Tower's roof is where the Shadow Crystal is located and is where the final battle against Blake Hall takes place.

There are lots of bosses here. There is a Rhyperior (which cannot be found after capture), Magmortar, Gallade, Dusknoir and Darkrai (which can only be captured again if the player talks to the Drowsy Guy on the top level).

After Team Dim Sun disbands Altru Tower, it is renamed Peace Tower and opens to the general public. If the player returns to its top, the Drowsy Guy can allow them to replay the final battle against Darkrai.

In the Special Mission, Liberate the Tower!, Team Dim Sun's remnants reform under Kincaid's leadership to form Team Debonairs and retake control of the upper floors of the Tower, with the top floor of the Altru Building sealed off by vigilant employees. With Darkrai's help—who stayed behind at the Tower to protect the Luminous Crystal—the player must get rid of Kincaid's followers and capture his Drapion and Gliscor to clear the mission.
Captain Stern (Japanese: クスノキ館長 Captain Kusunoki) is an oceanographer who lives in Slateport City in Hoenn.

In the games
Captain Stern is very popular in Slateport City. Due to his occupation, he is responsible for a lot of the town's livelihood. He constructed the S.S. Tidal, a ship transporting people to and from Lilycove City and Slateport City. He also built the Oceanic Museum, and runs Stern's Shipyard.

He ordered the III from Rustboro City. Team Magma or Team Aqua will threaten him in the Oceanic Museum to try to recover the Devon Goods, which are plans for a new submarine engine for Stern's next project— Submarine Explorer 1.

After gaining access to the HMs Dive and Surf, the player can go to the Abandoned Ship in hopes of finding a Scanner. In exchange for that item, Captain Stern will offer either the Evolution-inducing held item or Evolution-inducing held item in return, both of which are required for Clamperl to evolve into Gorebyss and Huntail, respectively.
In the anime
Captain Stern's only anime appearance came in The Spheal of Approval.

Captain Stern is the curator of the Oceanic Museum. He was introduced to Ash and Max when Marius battled them and lost; Captain Stern stepped in and mentioned he had been looking for Marius. As the curator of the Oceanic Museum, which Ash and Max attempted to enter, he offered to give Ash and Max a tour. The museum had many sculptures of Water Pokémon and models of submarines.

Captain Stern used underwater exploration vessels to explore the ocean, gather rare artifacts, and study sea Pokémon in their natural habitats. Captain Stern then showed off his latest find, a volcanic rock formed by underwater volcanoes, supposedly created by the legendary Pokémon, Groudon.

While the kids went to go get ice cream, members of Team Magma broke in and stole the stone.

Ash had confronted the member of Team Magma when Captain Stern caught up to them, and he sent out his Sealeo, which used an Aurora Beam. The blast caused the thief to drop the case and Marius caught it. Captain Stern told Max and Marius to run for it, and they escaped via the sea using Spheal. Ash, however, refused to run and continued to fight. After another flurry of attacks, the case opened and the stone broke. Team Magma got half of the stone; Pikachu got the other.

Later, Ash apologized to Captain Stern for letting Team Magma escape, but Stern was grateful to just keep half of the stone so he could study it.
In the Pokémon Adventures manga
In the Pokémon Adventures manga, Captain Stern appears in a supporting role. Ruby came to Slateport to enter a Pokémon Contest when Team Magma attacked, looking for Captain Stern. They kidnapped Stern, Ruby, the Pokémon Fanclub President, and Dock.

Team Magma wanted to use Submarine Explorer 1 to reach the Seafloor Cavern, the deepest part of Hoenn's ocean. However, a special starter developed by the Devon Corporation and transported in the Devon Goods was needed. Ruby saved Captain Stern but ended up drifting away in the submarine. During the conflict, Stern ended up being poisoned by a Torkoal.

Later, Captain Stern was able to inform Norman, and Gabby and Ty of Ruby's location.

When Kyogre flooded half of Hoenn, Stern helped evacuate the people of Slateport into ships.

Captain Stern is apparently friends with both Steven Stone and Wallace.

Ghosts (Japanese: ゆうれい Yūrei) are disguised Pokémon, and in one case, the soul of a deceased Pokémon, that live in Lavender Town's Pokémon Tower.

In the core series games
In the Generation I games and FireRed and LeafGreen, before getting a Silph Scope, several unidentified ghosts (in reality, wild Gastly, Haunter, or Cubone) appear in the Pokémon Tower. Another stronger ghost is revealed to be a mother Marowak, which haunts the tower as a result of her death at the hands of Team Rocket.

The identity of the ghosts can be revealed with a key item called the Silph Scope; without the device, battle the ghosts is impossible. Although the ghosts do not have a cry in the Generation I games, they emit the cry of the undercover Pokémon in Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen. Whenever the player orders a move against an unknown ghost, the player's Pokémon will be too scared to move. Instead of being attacked, the ghost will say:

;Japanese
<blockquote>ゆうれい『タチサレ&#8943;&#8943;　タチサレ&#8943;&#8943; (Ghost: Get out&hellip; Get out&hellip;)</blockquote>

;English
<blockquote>GHOST: Get out&hellip;&hellip; Get out&hellip;&hellip;</blockquote>

Before the battle against Marowak's ghost, a similar message appears, saying:

;Japanese
<blockquote>&#8943;　タチサレ！ (Begone!)<br>&#8943;　ココカラ　タチサレ&#8943; (Leave this place...) </blockquote>

;English
<blockquote>Be gone&hellip;<br>Intruders&hellip;</blockquote>

In addition, ghosts cannot be caught without being identified first. If one tries to throw a Poké Ball at a ghost, it dodges, and the message comes up:

;Japanese
<blockquote>よけられた！ (It dodged!)<br>こいつは　つかまりそうにないぞ！ (There is no chance of catching this guy!)</blockquote>

;English
<blockquote>It dodged the thrown Ball!<br>This Pokémon can't be caught!</blockquote>

Even Master Balls fail to capture the ghosts. Although most ghosts can be captured with the help of the Silph Scope, the Marowak's ghost cannot; this includes its unmasked state.

During the course of the game, the player must obtain the Silph Scope and battle the undead Marowak to calm its spirit. After the three Team Rocket Grunts who killed the Marowak are defeated, Mr. Fuji will express his gratitude to the player.

The Pokédex in the Generation I games still records the Pokédex of the wild Pokémon in spite of its disguise as a ghost.

If the Generation I games are played on a Super Game Boy (or on a Game Boy Color, in the case of the international releases of Yellow), the ghost has the same color palette as that of the Pokémon it is hiding. This means that a ghost can be seen with two different and legitimate color palettes: that of Gastly and Haunter, and that of Cubone and Marowak. If the ghost appears due to a glitch, a third palette is used. Furthermore, players can exploit the List of glitches in Generation I to make the ghost reveal itself by viewing the stats of any Pokémon in the player's party, and then returning to the battle. However, this glitch is only graphical as it is still impossible to battle or caught a ghost. Also in Generation I is a glitch to allow players get past the mother Marowak without the Silph Scope; if the player encounters the ghost and uses a Escape item, they will be free to advance.

One of Missingno.'s forms in Generation I uses the ghost's front sprite.

In the anime
In The Tower of Terror, a Sabrina takes Ash's and Pikachu's souls out of their bodies after they have been struck by a chandelier. Here it is shown that ghosts can fly around and remain in the form they took while living; however, living beings cannot see them.

Other ghosts appeared in The Ghost of Maiden's Peak, including the titular character. The ghost of an Orange League Champion, Captain, was featured in A Shipful of Shivers. A ghost girl was featured in Ghoul Daze!. Both of these ghosts had malicious intent, and were portrayed, in contrast to the Ghost Pokémon that Ash met in Lavender Town, as villains.

Trivia
*Ghost has been the first no-Pokémon creature you cant fight with before Pokémon Black 2 and White 2
*Ghost's original name was Spectre
After arriving in Lavender Town and healing his Pokémon at the Pokémon Center, Red overhears two people saying that the Pokémon Tower, the town's Pokémon graveyard, is haunted. Red asks if this is true; they insist it is. One of the people, a woman, asks Red if he believes in ghosts; he says that he doesn't think they exist. The woman says that the white hand on his shoulder must be fake too, then; Red turns around and sees nothing; when he turns back around, he finds that both people are gone, as if they had never even been there.

The Pokémon Center Nurse asks Red if he plans to visit the Pokémon Tower; he says yes, and she says that he should go to the Pokémon House first. When Red arrives at the house, he is greeted by one of the volunteers there, Reina. She shows him around, and she explains that the house was founded by an elderly man named Mr. Fuji and takes in orphaned and abandoned Pokémon to take care of them; Red comments that all of the Pokémon in the house look happy - all except an angry baby Cubone. Reina explains that the Cubone only gets along with Mr. Fuji but is hostile toward anyone else. Red asks why, to which Reina responds it is Team Rocket's fault.

Reina then explains Cubone's story to Red: A trio of Team Rocket Grunts was poaching Pokémon near town, and almost captured a Mankey, a Raticate, a Sandshrew, and a Sandslash. One Grunt noticed Cubone attempting to run away, and the others almost netted it, in hopes of selling it for a high price; however, an unknown Pokémon tackled them to protect it. The Pokémon was soon revealed to be Cubone's mother, Marowak, who told her child to run. Cubone was hesitant at first, but soon ran off. One of the Grunts, infuriated by Marowak's intervention, pulled out a stun baton and beat her to death. Cubone, now orphaned, was found by Mr. Fuji and given a loving home.

Red soon finds out that Team Rocket has taken over Pokémon Tower as their base. Mr. Fuji had gone to the tower to tell them to leave days ago, but had not returned. Red volunteers to find him, and says that he is more than capable due to having three badges. Blue, however, overhears the whole conversation and decides to do the same thing as Red so that he will be the hero.

That night, Team Rocket is in the tower. One of the Grunts says that there are rumors of the tower being haunted. Another hopefully says that they are just Ghost Pokémon. The Grunt says that the weird part is that they are actually real ghosts. The other is worried; the same Grunt who killed Marowak tells him to stop being a baby, as they have the Silph Scope, which can identify ghosts.

Red, also now in the tower, finds a young lady who is there to see her Nidoran's grave. She informs him that the ghost only appears towards the top. As he proceeds, he does not realize that Blue is ahead of him. Blue sees the ghost and runs; his screams catch the attention of Team Rocket, several floors above. The same worried Grunt from before thinks that the screams were because of the ghosts. The same Grunt that killed Marowak decides to go investigate.

Below, Blue runs into Red, and warns him about the ghost, which then appears. Blue wants to run, but Red decides to stay and fight. Blue then decides to go find Team Rocket. Red sends out Charmeleon, who attacks several times in a row to no avail. Blue, almost at the top of the stairs, is caught by the Rocket Grunt. He sends out his newly-evolved Wartortle to attack the Grunt himself.

Meanwhile, Cubone is trying to break out of its playpen at the Pokémon House. Reina goes to check on it, but as soon as she unlatches the gate, Cubone runs toward the Pokémon Tower. Reina, worried about the little Pokémon, chases after it. It runs up the stairs in the tower, apparently curious about something, with Reina still trying to catch up to it.

Blue runs down the tower's stairs and gives the Silph Scope, which he stole from Team Rocket, to Red. Red, wondering what it is, puts it on. The ghost is unmasked and revealed to be a Marowak. Red realizes that this is the same Marowak that was killed by Team Rocket. She warns Red not to go further, as Team Rocket is up the stairs. Cubone suddenly runs in, yelling for its mother, with Reina coming in soon after. Cubone hugs the ghost, causing Red to decide not to continue fighting. Marowak, realizing her son is safe, can finally rest in peace, and moves onto the afterlife. Blue then decides to not stay any longer and leaves.

Up the stairs, Team Rocket is confused as to what happened to the Silph Scope. Red, realizing that the Scope is what they were after, throws it to them and tells them to get out. They refuse, and one of the Grunts sends out his Koffing. Red sends out his new Jolteon and battles the Grunt. Koffing covers the field with Smog, causing trouble for Jolteon. However, Cubone then uses Bonemerang to clear the Smog, giving Jolteon the opportunity to defeat Koffing with Thunderbolt. Team Rocket then leaves, while Red and Reina advance to the top floor. There, they find Mr. Fuji tied up. He is relieved to see that Reina and Cubone are alright and quickly becomes acquainted with Red. He soon realizes that Marowak can rest in peace because Cubone is okay.

The next day, at the Pokémon House, Mr. Fuji gives Red a Poké Flute to wake up sleeping Pokémon, as well as a pair of mysterious stones. Red asks if Fuji really wants to give him these valuable gems. Fuji explains that they have no value as gems, but that Red will soon find out what exactly they are.

Cubone is now friendly towards humans and makes fast friends with Reina. As Red leaves Lavender Town to continue his journey, everyone says goodbye, and Mr. Fuji says that Red is welcome back anytime. As Red passes a tree, he hears Blue's voice up in the tree. Blue tries to take credit for the events of the night before, but Red comments that he was screaming the whole time. Blue denies everything as Red rides away on his bicycle. Red then saves his game.
Trivia
* The Pokémon Fan Club Chairman uses the same design as in the Pokémon Adventures manga.
* When Red is talking to the two people at the Pokémon Center, a white hand can be seen over his shoulder, referencing an NPC from Lavender Town in Red and Blue.

Errors
* In one scene, Mankey's right leg is completely brown.
* When Cubone was running away from the Team Rocket Grunts, one of Cubone's dorsal spikes on its back is briefly colored the same way as its skull. The same error repeats only twice.
* When Red is looking at the Poké Flute, the bottom of the Poké Ball is at the bottom of the flute, but in the next shot, it's the other way around.

Dub edits
* In the original Japanese version, Reina directly states that Marowak was killed; in the English dub, she says that Cubone lost its mother.
* Marowak's scream when it is killed by Team Rocket is toned down in the dub version.

The Italian dub kept the original text.
* Marowak's scream when it is killed by Team Rocket is toned down in the dub version.
File 1 - Red (Japanese: レポート1 レッド Report 1 - Red) is the first episode of Pokémon Origins. It was first broadcast in Japan on October 2, 2013 and was released on Pokémon TV on November 15, 2013. The English version was made available on Hulu on January 30, 2014.
spoilers

Plot
Similar to Red and Green, this episode begins with Professor Oak introducing himself as well as the world of Pokémon. He explains that the world is inhabited by creatures known as Pokémon and that people use them as pets and for fights. After releasing an Eevee from its Poké Ball, he invites the audience to the world of Pokémon.

The scene changes to a battle between a Gengar and Nidorino that is being watched by Red. His mom tells him that Professor Oak wants to see him in his lab. Excited, Red falls down the stairs but quickly gets back up and runs over to Professor Oak's lab. In front of the lab, Red meets up with Blue, Professor Oak's grandson and Red's rival, who also was called down to the lab. They race in as Professor Oak greets them. He hands them both a Pokédex, a high-tech encyclopedia of Pokémon, which he's been working on. He asks them both to fulfill his dream of making a complete guide on all Pokémon.

In addition to doing this, Professor Oak allows the boys to pick one of the three Starter Pokemon: Charmander, Squirtle, or Bulbasaur. Blue lets Red pick first. Red picks Charmander as his first Pokémon and Blue goes with Squirtle to have an advantage over Red. Professor Oak asks if they would like to nickname either of their Pokémon, but they both decline. Blue teases Red about wanting his first battle to be memorable instead of battling a novice like Red. Blue goes on to explain how he wants to be the greatest Pokémon Trainer in the world. Red begins his journey shortly afterward.

Walking down the road, Red encounters a Pidgey. He starts to battle it but is quickly overwhelmed and fails to capture it. However, his next battle against a Rattata is successful and he catches the Rattata, as well as a Spearow, Caterpie, and a different Pidgey. The scene moves to him battling a Youngster Trainer in a forest. The Youngster sends out a Nidoran♀. After attacking, Red tries to capture the Nidoran♀, but the Poké Ball is rejected. The Youngster explains that Red can't just catch other people's Pokémon and points him in the direction where the Nidoran♀ was found.

Red makes it close to Viridian City, where he runs into Blue. Blue challenges Red to a battle and, after some hesitation, Red accepts the challenge. Blue sends out Squirtle and Red sends out Charmander. Charmander is at a disadvantage from the beginning as Squirtle dodges every attack and overpowers Charmander. The battle finishes with Blue as the clear victor as he tells Red to get stronger or he'll never finish the Pokédex.

Stressed on his defeat, Red sits down next to a lake and thinks to himself that he and Blue should be at the same level, due to the fact that they both started their Pokémon journey at the same time. Brock, who had watched Red's battle with Blue the entire time, states that Red is wrong, and that Blue was far more experienced than Red was during the battle. Additionally, Brock states that Red and his Charmander are not in sync. Brock asks Red what Pokémon battles are about and then leaves.

Later in the Pewter City museum, Red sees two people talking about the Pewter City gym leader. Then he is running to the gym. When Red gets there two people state that Red is weak and is light years from facing Brock. Then from behind, Brock says that he invited Red there. Then Brock asks if Red has an answer to the question he asked him. Red says no but that he went there for answers. In the battle Brock sends out Geodude and Onix. During the battle Red realizes that Pokémon aren't tools for battle but instead partners. After the battle red receives a Boulder and 34.

Then there is a change in scenery to Professor Oaks Lab. One of Prof.Oaks assistants asks him why he chose Red. Prof.Oak says that although Red is clumsy ever since he was a young boy he has hated to lose. But that Red is honest and he will learn from others around him and grow stronger. And he also says that he hopes Blue will grow along with Red.

* Clefairy
* Clefable

Trivia
* The beginning of the episode features sound effects from the original Game Boy games, drawing from the opening animation from Red and Green (with a Gengar battling a Nidorino). The main Pokémon anime had also animated the same opening animation in a similar fashion in the beginning of its own first episode, Pokémon - I Choose You!.
* In the Japanese version of this episode, Red initially considers nicknaming his Charmander Sepultura (meaning "grave" or "burial" in Spanish) prior to his decision of refraining from nicknaming Charmander at all. "Sepultura" is a nickname that was given to a Charmander that appeared in a screenshot on the back of the Japanese box packaging of Red and Green.
* When introducing the starter Pokémon, Professor Oak called Bulbasaur a "plant Pokémon" instead of a Grass Pokémon, with the terms referring to the types. Despite this apparent oversight, this usage is consistent with Professor Oak's dialogue from Red and Blue if the player is about to choose Bulbasaur as their starter Pokémon.
** Furthermore, the Gym guide in Cerulean Gym also refers to Pokémon of the Grass type as "plant Pokémon" in the English Generation I games. In the Japanese versions, he instead refers to the Grass type itself, calling it the "Plant type" (Japanese: しょくぶつタイプ).
* Before Red challenges Brock, the female trainer at the entrance believes Red is "light years away from being ready from that", a rough quote from the first Jr. Trainer encountered in the Pewter Gym from Red and Blue.

Dub edits
* The timeline for all of the games prior to Professor Oak's introduction has been removed from non-Japanese versions. It was re-added when the English dub was released on Hulu.
* In the dubbed version, Professor Oak asks if Blue would choose Squirtle because its color matches with his name, to which Blue replies that he would never choose his Pokémon for "such a ridiculous reason", but still chooses Squirtle, due to its type advantage over Red's Charmander. In the Japanese version, Professor Oak instead asks if Blue is going to choose Bulbasaur as his starter Pokémon because its color matches his Japanese name, Green, but he says that he doesn't pick his Pokémon for such a girlish reason, and instead chooses Squirtle to counter Red's Fire type.
* When Red is pondering over the matter of giving his Charmander a nickname, no actual name suggestions are said aloud prior to Red's decision of leaving Charmander's name unaltered. In the Japanese version, Red had mentioned "Sepultura" as a possible nickname for Charmander. Sepultura is actually a nickname given to a Charmander seen in the back of the Japanese box of Pokémon Red and Green.
* Charmander's scream when it is bitten by Squirtle is toned down in the dub version.
*Holo Caster announcement
:"We're bringing you this special bulletin. The Poké Ball Factory in the area around Laverre City has been attacked. The identities of those involved are unknown. However, this is not expected to have any effect on the sales of Poké Balls..."
Pokémon League
* First time entering
:"You're the illustrious <player>, are you? Welcome at last to the Pokémon League. I am one of the Elite Four. People know me as the Fire-type-Pokémon user, Malva. Here in the Pokémon League, you'll encounter the four of us--the Elite Four--and our Champion. If you hope to meet the Champion and challenge her here, you must first defeat the four of us. Do your best, because if you can't impress us with your real strength, you'll never get to battle her. But it should be a walk in the park for you, right? The "hero"/"heroine" who destroyed big, bad Team Flare."

* Before battle
:(First time) "Welcome, challenger, to my Blazing Chamber! I am Malva, and I shall be your opponent today."

:(After beating the Champion) "Oh, I can't tell you how happy I am to meet you again... I feel like my heart might just burst into flames. I'm burning up with my hatred for you, runt!"

* Being defeated
:"What news... So a new challenger has defeated Malva of the Elite Four!"

* After being defeated
:"Fantastic. Utterly fantastic. I'll report to all the world the news of you and your Pokémon dominating the Pokémon League! I AM a Holo Caster star, after all. Heh, I'm such a busy woman... "
: (After beating the Champion) "Oooh, you wicked little Trainer! You're just too much, you know? You're so amusing that I just want to burn you up where you stand! But I'll let you live.... After all... If you want your dreams to come true, you have to be strong enough to force them to happen. Team Flare wasn't strong enough to do that, but I can see that you are. Beat the last <number> members of the Elite Four, and you can face the champion. "

* General afterword
:"<Number> more members of the Elite Four stand between you and the Champion. Take that elevator there to return to the main hall if you're ready for them."

* Being defeated
:"You have secured a noble victory over Malva of the Elite Four!"

* After being defeated
:"Hmph!"

* After being defeated
:"Enough for now. I brought you here for a reason. The first issue is the identity of the Trainer called Essentia. In truth, she is simply a girl called Emma, wearing a piece of special technology dubbed the Expansion Suit. The Expansion Suit was created by Dr. Xerosic. I can see that name means something to you. You remember him, I take it. ...One of Team Flare's scientists. This brings me to my request, young Calem/Serena. Make sure Xerosic disappears. I don't care how. If you need a reason, call it honor among thieves. Even we in Team Flare had our sense of pride. You may have disagreed with us, but we doing what we thought right. I won't let him sully our honor now. The hero of Kalos would hardly wish for that girl Emma to keep staining her hands with these crimes as Essentia. If you want to help the girl, you need to put an end to Xerosic. And that I can help you with! If we leave now, we can find him at Lysandre Café. Don't dawdle. Be ready to face death if you go. Prepare well if you want a shot at surviving."

Lysandre Café
:"Oh my. Aren't you a speedy one? Score one for you. I do so hate to be kept waiting. Come on. I'll show you the way."

Lysandre Labs
:"You'll find Xerosic in the lab. It's a secret floor that only certain admins know about."

:"You'll need to take the elevator. I'll just enter the special password on this panel here... And voilà! Now you have access to the secret floor of Lysandre Labs. You should find Xerosic and his Essentia there. The rest I leave to you. The secret floor has the same layout as this one. You defeated Team Flare once, right? Then this should be a piece of cake. Oh. And one last thing... Tell that partner of yours... Tell that infuriating man... Yes, tell him I fulfilled my end of the bargain. And he should keep in mind what will happen to him if he doesn't do the same. Good day."
*Holo Caster announcement
:"We're bringing you this special bulletin. The Poké Ball Factory in the area around Laverre City has been attacked. The identities of those involved are unknown. However, this is not expected to have any effect on the sales of Poké Balls..."

Pokémon League
* First time entering

* Before battle

* Being defeated
:"What news... So a new challenger has defeated Malva of the Elite Four!"

* After being defeated

* General afterword
:"<Number> more members of the Elite Four stand between you and the Champion. Take that elevator there to return to the main hall if you're ready for them."

Battle Chateau
* Before battle
:"I am the Duchess Malva, and I shall be your opponent today."

* Being defeated
:"You have secured a noble victory over Malva of the Elite Four!"

* After being defeated
:(if she gives the player an item) "Take this with you when you go. I selected it particularly for you."
:"Hmph!"

* After being defeated

Good day."
Poké Ball Factory
*Holo Caster announcement
:"We're bringing you this special bulletin. The Poké Ball Factory in the area around Laverre City has been attacked. The identities of those involved are unknown. However, this is not expected to have any effect on the sales of Poké Balls..."

Pokémon League
* First time entering

* Before battle

* Being defeated
:"What news... So a new challenger has defeated Malva of the Elite Four!"

* After being defeated

* General afterword
:"<Number> more members of the Elite Four stand between you and the Champion. Take that elevator there to return to the main hall if you're ready for them."

Battle Chateau
* Before battle
:"I am the Duchess Malva, and I shall be your opponent today."

* Being defeated
:"You have secured a noble victory over Malva of the Elite Four!"

* After being defeated
:(if she gives the player an item) "Take this with you when you go. I selected it particularly for you."
:"Oooh, you wicked little Trainer, you! I will definitely remember this battle!"

Hotel Richissime
:"Took you long enough, <player>. It may happen that I am in need of your services, but I expect you to keep in mind how valuable my time is! Oh, never mind! Just fight me! I can't possibly have a reasonable discussion when my emotions are so inflamed!"
::Yes: "I'm burning with rage!"
::No:<!-- ""-->

* Being defeated
:"Hmph!"

* After being defeated

Good day."
