I think the page should maybe include an explaination of the different 'battle styles'. Basically, 'shift' is the standard setting, where after you defeat each of the oppont's pokemon, you're asked if you'd like to switch pokemon, whereas with 'set' you keep playing with the same pokemon until it's KO'd or you switch it out, etc. I'm sure someone else can put it more eloquently.--Oatzy 22:21, 9 April 2010 (UTC)

In Pokémon Ranger, Professor Hastings makes a joke about the Options menu in Pokémon games. Something about how they need to reconsider their options, and then he clarifies he's not talking about things like text settings. He even calls it an "inside joke". Is this notable in any way to mention here, or is it too minor? 1337star (talk) 04:29, 11 January 2013 (UTC)

Wild Pokémon (Japanese: 野生ポケモン wild Pokémon) are any Pokémon that are not currently owned by a Pokémon Trainer. They are encountered in most parts of the Pokémon world, most commonly outside of cities and towns, often in tall grass, in caves, or on water. Typically, a Trainer will attempt to capture a wild Pokémon with a Poké Ball but it is also common for a trainer to run from a Pokémon they are not interested in. There are many instances of wild Pokémon being used for assistance without being caught, such as Pokémon Rangers using them to perform a task by directing them with a Capture Styler.

In the games
In the games, wild Pokémon will appear to the player in a variety of locations, most often by walking through tall grass, but also within caves, abandoned buildings, surfing on water, fishing, Rock Smash, headbutting small trees, using Sweet Scent, or by slathering honey on certain trees. Depending on the location, the Pokémon may be different species, and are typically at higher levels in areas only accessible later in the game.

When encountered, a wild Pokémon's moveset will consist of the most recent four moves its species learns by level-up: that is to say, a level 8 Yanma will know Tackle, Foresight, and Quick Attack when encountered in the wild in Platinum, while one encountered at level 19 will have Quick Attack, Double Team, SonicBoom, and Detect. This is true for even evolved species, such as Raichu, which, if it were able to be encountered in the wild, would always know ThunderShock, Tail Whip, Quick Attack, and Thunderbolt.

There are several ways to alter the wild Pokémon encounter rate. One of these, introduced in Generation I, is the use of Repel, which will avoid encounters with any Pokémon of a lower level than the party's lead Pokémon. The Out-of-battle effect item was introduced in Generation II, which lowers the encounter rate. Pokémon March and Pokémon Lullaby in Generation II, played on the Pokégear, will raise or lower the encounter rate respectively, while Abilities that affect appearance of wild Pokémon and the White and Black Flutes do the same in Generation III onwards.

In some instances, two wild Pokémon will appear at once. In Generation IV, this occurs when the player travels in a specific region with another Pokémon Trainer. They battle in the double battle method introduced in the third generation. In Generation V, there is the chance of two Pokémon appearing at once in Tall grass. In both instances, one of the Pokémon will have to be defeated before the other can be caught.

In the anime
Typically, wild Pokémon are not a central feature of the anime, which focuses mostly on the Pokémon belonging to Ash, his friends and other Trainers he encounters. Most of the Pokémon belonging to the group were shown in the wild at some point, but are usually captured at a later point in the same episode, most often at the end. Despite this, there have been several recurring wild Pokémon who appear over a length of time and are not captured. Of all of these Pokémon, only an Aipom that stole Ash's hat went on to be captured several episodes after it appeared.

There are however numerous examples of wild Pokémon being featured in the anime in debut episodes that introduce their species, such as Clefairy in Clefairy and the Moon Stone and Sudowoodo in Type Casting.

In the first anime episode, Ash's Pokédex states that wild Pokémon tend to be jealous of human-trained Pokémon, this being one of the reasons that the Spearow Ash hit with a rock attacked Pikachu instead.
Kanto

In the manga
As Pokédexes prior to the arcs in Hoenn typically needed the Pokémon to be captured in order for data to be gained, capturing wild Pokémon has been a long-standing point for every Pokédex Holder save Gold and Silver until the Ruby & Sapphire. The first wild Pokémon to be captured was a wild Nidorino by Red, and even legendary Pokémon were seen as soon as the first round, though the one in question (a Mew appearing near Pallet Town) was not captured. Pokémon that have been released, unlike in the games, do sometimes appear in the wild and can be re-caught or controlled by another Trainer, such as Emerald's Sceptile and Mewtwo, and again unlike in the games, where identical Trainer ID means that high-level Pokémon can be controlled by its Trainer, several Pokémon such as Pika and Zelhiko were disobedient and likely to even attack its Trainer on a whim.
The Official Pokémon Handbook #3 edited by Josh Izzo and Stephanie Howze is a handbook that was published in September 2001, and is one of the sequels to The Official Pokémon Handbook. It served as a paper form of the Johto Pokédex. It contained an entry for all the Generation II Pokémon, excluding Celebi.

Entries
Each Pokémon with an entry either shares a page of the book with one other Pokémon or has a page to itself.

Name
Each entry is topped with a large, odd-shaped box. It has the Pokémon's name, Pokédex number, and its species (e.g. Aqua Rabbit Pokémon for Azumarill). On the side of the page is a section that has many facts about the Pokémon itself. Other features include a summary, a picture of the Pokémon, and various sprites of that Pokémon.

Stats
On the side of the pages, the entries list the following stats:
# Name pronunciation
# Type
# Height (in inches and feet)
# Weight (in pounds)
# Techniques (the basic and most commonly used moves of that Pokémon)
# Evolution (either "_____ evolves into _____" or "None")

Techniques and other techniques are not listed with the levels at which they are learned, and not all the moves the Pokémon can learn appear.

Image and other information
Each Pokémon has a picture on its page and some pages also feature a "Pokédex Pick," with extra facts about the Pokémon that will cross over in the anime or sometimes have helpful information.

Evolution chain
At the very bottom of the entry there are pictures with arrows between them to show what the Pokémon evolves into. Pokémon that do not evolve do not have an evolution chain.

Other content
Besides the entries on each Pokémon, the book includes A word from Professor Oak, similar to his speeches that welcomed players into games, but has an extended duration. It also features a Johto region map with a brief summary about the region. There are also Johto and Indigo League comparisons that compare Badges, amount needed etc. There are also a couple of pages in it to read up about Pokémon types, that show the types of all Generation I Pokémon and Generation II Pokémon. At the end of the book, it has pictures and scenes from the Pokémon anime. The last three pages have a Pokémon checklist, and a brief story about unrevealed, at the time, missing Pokémon not featured in the book, Celebi.

Errors
*The book refers to Grampa Canyon as "Grandfather Canyon."
*In the section that explains Pokémon types, Qwilfish is misspelled as "Qwillfish."
**In this same section, Cleffa and Heracross are not listed at all.
*Ledian has Submission listed among its attacks, but it cannot learn Submission.
**Oddly enough, Forretress has this exact same error.
*Rock Slide is misspelled "Rock Side" in Sudowoodo's listing.
*For Sunkern's Pokédex entry, Sunkern's height is listed as 0'01" when it is actually 1'00".
*Gligar has the non-existent attack "Sand Throw", presumably a misprint of Sand-Attack, and Bite, which it cannot learn, listed among its attacks.
*Mantine's Pokédex Pick says it is the heaviest Johto Pokémon, though Steelix is in fact the heaviest, nearly twice the weight of Mantine.
**Also, its move listing is messed up. It reads "Wing, Bubble Beam, Ray Attack, Confuse" when it should read "Wing Attack, BubbleBeam, Confuse Ray".
*Porygon2 has the non-existent move Cannon listed among its attacks. Similarly, Blissey has the move Slap listed, and Ho-Oh has Normal.
Currently, the section that shows the arrangement of the Pokémon in the trap for Gen II is wrong, or at least for Crystal anyway. It's not the same as HG/SS as the article implies. For one, the trap is only five tiles wide as opposed to the six the image shows. And secondly, the arrangement of the Pokémon is completely wrong. For instance, I just encountered a Voltorb one step under a Geodude, impossible if the Pokémon are arranged like they are on the diagram. I'm not really in a position to check out every tile and still make it through the HQ (and I've cleared too many that I don't remember what they were anyway), but if someone could look into this, that'd be nice. Breloom (Japanese: キノガッサ Kinogassa) is a dual-type Pokémon.

It evolves from Shroomish starting at level 23.

Biology
Physiology
In sharp contrast to the diminutive Shroomish, Breloom sports an agile shape, similar to a kangaroo or a theropod. It has a mushroom-like green "cap" on its head with visible gills and a round, somewhat berry-like or oak gall-like portion on one side. Breloom’s head, neck, and tail are tan in coloration. Breloom’s mouth is somewhat beak-like in shape, and there is a petal-like arrangement of extensions from its shoulders. Breloom’s chest and lower body is green, and its feet have two red claws. Breloom has seed clusters made of hardened toxic spores on the end of its tail, which it uses to slam into its foe. Its arms appear to be short and of little use, but they can stretch surprisingly far to deliver punches. Its red foreclaws are ideal for slicing.
Gender differences
None.

Special abilities
Like Shroomish, Breloom can store up Effect Spore that causes several status ailments, and especially notable among these are the toxic spores on its tail, which are horrible to eat. They are also physically very strong, much like most Fightings, and extremely fast. Some of its unique moves depends on these two factors; Sky Uppercut, and the other Mach Punch.

Behavior
Breloom come in groups along with other Shroomish and partake in tasks for their survival like foraging for food and defending their kind from enemies and predators. Once threatened, Breloom will not hesitate to fight and will not cease until their enemies have been warded off or beaten. Breloom are formidable combatants in battle and will take on almost any Pokémon who poses as a threat to their kind, especially their young. Breloom’s fighting technique consists of closing in on its foe with light and sprightly footwork before punching with its stretchy arms. Breloom also scatters spores from holes in the mushroom cap on its head.

Habitat
Breloom prefers warm and humid climates.

Diet
Pokémon food
Breloom feeds on trees and plants in fields and forests. Breloom can also occasionally be found with the Kebia Berry.

In the anime
Breloom's first appearance was a cameo in the first Advanced Generation movie, Jirachi: Wish Maker. The Mushroom Pokémon was one of the residents of Forina, Jirachi's home.

The first major role Breloom had was in A Shroomish Skirmish. Ash and friends were being attacked by Breloom that had evolved from Shroomish that were mad at them for stealing their food. May's newly evolved May defeated the Breloom in a vicious hand to hand fight and saved the day.

Breloom had another cameo in Numero Uno Articuno as a Pokémon belonging to Factory Head.

A Breloom appeared in Pasta la Vista, under the ownership of the Fighting Dojo.

Kenny has a Breloom that appeared in Journey to the Unown! and Team Shocker!.
Trivia
* No other Pokémon has the same type combination as Breloom.
* Breloom has the highest Attack out of all Grass Pokémon.
** Breloom is tied with Machamp for having the highest Attack stat out of all Fighting Pokémon.
* Despite being called the Mushroom Pokémon and some Dex entries mentioning its spores, Breloom does not learn Spore via level-up. However, it can have the ability Effect Spore.
** Its pre-evolution Shroomish does, however.
* In Generation III, Breloom did not learn any Grass moves by level up after evolving.
* Breloom's petal-like appendages adorning it's neck are noticeably longer in the 3rd Generation. Breloom also seems to have smaller 'hands' in the 3rd Generation as well.
* Breloom can learn False Swipe through breeding, but not by TM.
