A '''player character''' in the world of [[Pokémon]] is the protagonist of the {{pkmn|games}}, the avatar of the player. Player characters are usually remarkably silent, only able to answer yes and no to questions. This is so that the player can "fill in" what they imagine the character is thinking, feeling and acting, thus immersing the player within the world of the game.

===Main series===
In the mainstream games, they are always [[Pokémon Trainer]]s. At the conclusion of their journey, most will have conquered a [[Pokémon League]]'s eight [[Gym Leader]]s and [[Elite Four]], and become the {{pkmn|Champion}}.

Those who do the above will most often start their journey in their hometown by getting, or shortly before getting, a [[starter Pokémon]], a Pokémon that appears very early in their native [[region]]'s [[Regional Pokédex|Pokédex]], and is of the {{t|Grass}}-, {{t|Fire}}-, or {{type2|Water}}. The region's native [[Pokémon professor]] will always give them this, as well as a Pokédex.

In {{game|Crystal}}, and each game in the [[main series]] which followed it, players were also able to pick the [[gender]] of the lead, more often than not to match their own.

Aside from the standard that many of the games' player characters take in their journey, there are also several other ways in which other player characters complete their journey, such as [[Wes]] and [[Michael]] who must defeat [[Cipher]] and free all of their [[snagged Pokémon]] from their [[Shadow Pokémon|Shadow state]].

To date, only one player character has reappeared from an older generation. In [[Generation II]], when {{ga|Gold}} or {{ga|Kris}} travels to [[Mt. Silver]] and reaches the deepest point of the cave, {{ga|Red}} is found, utterly silent as he was under the player's control, to challenge to the second highest-[[level]]ed [[Pokémon battle]] that has appeared in the series (it eventually was surpassed by {{ga|Pearl}} in {{v2|Platinum}}). The [[Pokémon Red and Green Versions|original games]] from [[Generation I]] also got [[Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen Versions|remakes]] in [[Generation III]], with Red as the male protagonist. Red is assumed to also appear in {{game|HeartGold and SoulSilver|s}}, serving the same role as he did in Generation II.

In the {{ga|Pokémon Ranger}} series, [[Solana]], [[Lunick]], [[Kellyn]], and {{ra|Kate}} are not Pokémon Trainers, but instead {{OBP|Pokémon Ranger|Ranger series}}s. They use the Pokémon they have captured with the [[Capture Styler]] to help them along the way. They also have [[partner Pokémon]] that follow them wherever they go.

In the [[Pokémon Mystery Dungeon|Mystery Dungeon series]], players play as actual Pokémon for the first time. Unlike most other Pokémon games, the player actually talks, but is given pre-generated phrases to say to questions.

In the Card GB series, [[Mark]] and [[Mint]] do not use actual Pokémon themselves, but cards instead.

In the {{pkmn|anime}}, five of the player characters have been given major roles, three of them in the main anime series. {{Ash}} and [[Ritchie]] represent {{ga|Red}}, being based on him in appearance as well as basic history. At the beginning of {{series2|Advanced Generation}}, {{an|May}} was introduced in order to better represent [[Generation III]] to viewers, as both [[Misty]] and [[Brock]] are characters native to [[Generation I]]. Likewise, at the beginning of the {{series|Diamond & Pearl}}, {{an|Dawn}} joined Ash.

{{jo|Jimmy}} and {{jo|Marina}} appeared in ''[[The Legend of Thunder!]]'' special, taking a similar role to Ash and his companions, fighting [[Team Rocket]] members to protect [[legendary Pokémon]]. While the protagonists of [[Generation II]] were not represented in Ash's party, these two filled the roles as the anime counterparts to {{ga|Gold}} and {{ga|Kris}}.

So far, {{ga|Brendan}} has only made a few select cameo appearances in the anime, while {{ga|Lucas}} made a cameo at the beginning of ''[[Giratina and the Sky Warrior]]'' battling {{ga|Brendan}}.

==Trivia==
* All of the female player characters from the main series who have been in the anime are [[Pokémon Coordinator]]s either full-time or part-time.
* None of the male player characters from the [[main series]] (or their counterparts) have encountered {{Ash}}. {{jo|Jimmy}} was the only one besides Ash to have more than merely a cameo. The only male player character in all of the Pokémon games to have encountered Ash is [[Kellyn]] of {{g|Ranger: Shadows of Almia}}.
* Leaf is the only player character from the handheld games so far not to appear in the anime either through a cameo or a counterpart.
* [[Kellyn]], {{OBP|Kate|Ranger}}, [[Todd]], and [[Wes]] are the only player characters who do not wear any sort of headgear.
* {{ga|Red}}'s dialog during his appearance as an NPC in [[Generation II]] references the Pokémon games' player characters' status as silent protagonists. In those games, his dialog with the player character(s) of those games consists only of ellipses.

He is shrouded in mystery for most of the Battle Frontier saga. Unlike the other Brains, his silhouette is not shown on its own during the opening and is only seen in the center of the group shot. Trainers will only find out the location of the Battle Pyramid after they have collected the other six symbols. This may mean that Brandon ranks higher than the rest of the Frontier Brains, although in the video games and manga this position belongs to [[Anabel]]. When [[Ash Ketchum|Ash]] finally gets his sixth Frontier Symbol in ''[[AG170|Second Time's the Charm]]'', he learns that it is located near [[Pewter City]].

The first battle with Brandon occurred in ''[[AG177|Battling the Enemy Within]]''. However, Ash was possessed by an ancient king of the Pyramid who battled Brandon's Regirock with [[Ash's Sceptile]]. Sceptile unfortunately was defeated, though Ash eventually regained control of his body and the Pyramid was moved to an area near the [[Indigo Plateau]].

For their second battle in ''[[AG185|Overjoyed!]]'', [[Ash's Torkoal]] squared off against Brandon's Registeel. But it too was defeated by Brandon's [[Legendary Pokémon]].

When Ash and [[Ash's friends|co.]] met up with Brandon in a forest, in ''[[AG188|Gathering the Gang of Four]]'', Brandon and Ash fought in a 4 vs 4 battle, in which Ash's {{AP|Charizard}}, {{AP|Squirtle}}, {{AP|Bulbasaur}}, and {{AP|Pikachu}} were pitted against Brandon's {{p|Dusclops}}, {{p|Ninjask}}, {{p|Solrock}}, and {{p|Regice}}, Ash deciding to bring back his oldest and most powerful Pokémon for this challenge. Although Charizard was defeated by Dusclops in the first round, Bulbasaur, Squirtle and Pikachu were able to overcome the rest of Brandon's Pokémon, Ash finally winning the Battle Frontier.

He is shrouded in mystery for most of the Battle Frontier saga. Unlike the other Brains, his silhouette is not shown on its own during the opening and is only seen in the center of the group shot. Trainers will only find out the location of the Battle Pyramid after they have collected the other six symbols. This may mean that Brandon ranks higher than the rest of the Frontier Brains, although in the video games and manga this position belongs to [[Anabel]]. When [[Ash Ketchum|Ash]] finally gets his sixth Frontier Symbol in ''[[AG170|Second Time's the Charm]]'', he learns that it is located near [[Pewter City]].

The first battle with Brandon occurred in ''[[AG177|Battling the Enemy Within]]''. However, Ash was possessed by an ancient king of the Pyramid who battled Brandon's Regirock with [[Ash's Sceptile]]. Sceptile unfortunately was defeated, though Ash eventually regained control of his body and the Pyramid was moved to an area near the [[Indigo Plateau]].

For their second battle in ''[[AG185|Overjoyed!]]'', [[Ash's Torkoal]] squared off against Brandon's Registeel. But it too was defeated by Brandon's [[Legendary Pokémon]].

When Ash and [[Ash's friends|co.]] met up with Brandon in a forest, in ''[[AG188|Gathering the Gang of Four]]'', Brandon and Ash fought in a 4 vs 4 battle, in which Ash's {{AP|Charizard}}, {{AP|Squirtle}}, {{AP|Bulbasaur}}, and {{AP|Pikachu}} were pitted against Brandon's {{p|Dusclops}}, {{p|Ninjask}}, {{p|Solrock}}, and {{p|Regice}}, Ash deciding to bring back his oldest and most powerful Pokémon for this challenge. Although Charizard was defeated by Dusclops in the first round, Bulbasaur, Squirtle and Pikachu were able to overcome the rest of Brandon's Pokémon, Ash finally winning the Battle Frontier.

It should be noted that the concept of seasons does not exist in Japan. An invention of the American animation and television industry, a season is the only way to differentiate one story arc, such as ''Advanced Battle'', from any other in the [[Pocket Monsters Advanced Generation (series)|Pocket Monsters Advanced Generation]] series. Unlike in Japan, where episodes are aired almost every week of the year, in America episodes are aired in usually 52-episode blocs, or "seasons," for several months before taking a break of several months to allow production on the next batch of episodes to begin.

* May participates in the Kanto [[Grand Festival]] located at the [[Indigo Plateau]]. She ends up in the top four after defeating [[Harley]] and [[Drew]], and then losing to [[Solidad]].
* Ash and his friends learn about [[Sinnoh]], a region located north of [[Kanto]].
* Ash completes the Battle Frontier with his victory at the [[Pyramid King Brandon|Battle Pyramid]]. He is offered a position as a [[Frontier Brain]], but he declines.
* May decides to compete in Pokémon contests in the [[Johto]] region after leaving Kanto.
* The group parts ways. Ash returns to [[Pallet Town]] and meets up with [[Gary]], who came from [[Sinnoh]]. Ash and Gary battle, with [[Ash's Pikachu]] losing to Gary's {{p|Electivire}}.
* Ash decides to follow Gary back into [[Sinnoh]], and leaves all his Pokémon, except [[Ash's Pikachu|Pikachu]], at [[Professor Oak]]'s ranch. However, [[Dawn's Aipom|Aipom]] quickly follows Ash and rejoins him.
* [[Team Rocket]] continues to follow Ash into [[Sinnoh]].
* [[Brock]] travels home to [[Pewter City]] before later meeting up with Ash and [[Dawn (anime)|Dawn]] in [[Sinnoh]].
