A player character in the world of Pokémon is the protagonist of the games, the avatar of the player. Player characters are usually remarkably silent, only able to answer yes and no to questions. This is so that the player can "fill in" what they imagine the character is thinking, feeling and acting, thus immersing the player within the world of the game.

Gameplay
Main series
In the mainstream games, they are always Pokémon Trainers. At the conclusion of their journey, most will have conquered a Pokémon League's eight Gym Leaders and Elite Four, and become the Champion.

Those who do the above will most often start their journey in their hometown by getting, or shortly before getting, a starter Pokémon, a Pokémon that appears very early in their native region's Pokédex, and is of the Grass-, Fire-, or Water. The region's native Pokémon professor will always give them this, as well as a Pokédex.

In Crystal, and each game in the main series which followed it, players were also able to pick the gender of the lead, more often than not to match their own.

Aside from the standard that many of the games' player characters take in their journey, there are also several other ways in which other player characters complete their journey, such as Wes and Michael who must defeat Cipher and free all of their snagged Pokémon from their Shadow state.

To date, only one player character has reappeared from an older generation. In Generation II, when Gold or Kris travels to Mt. Silver and reaches the deepest point of the cave, Red is found, utterly silent as he was under the player's control, to challenge to the second highest-leveled Pokémon battle that has appeared in the series (it eventually was surpassed by Pearl in Platinum). The original games from Generation I also got remakes in Generation III, with Red as the male protagonist. Red is assumed to also appear in HeartGold and SoulSilver, serving the same role as he did in Generation II.

Side series
In the Pokémon Ranger series, Solana, Lunick, Kellyn, and Kate are not Pokémon Trainers, but instead Pokémon Rangers. They use the Pokémon they have captured with the Capture Styler to help them along the way. They also have partner Pokémon that follow them wherever they go.

In the Mystery Dungeon series, players play as actual Pokémon for the first time. Unlike most other Pokémon games, the player actually talks, but is given pre-generated phrases to say to questions.

In the Card GB series, Mark and Mint do not use actual Pokémon themselves, but cards instead.

Others
In Snap, Todd Snap must strive for something different from Trainers. He must capture all the Pokémon on Pokémon Island — on film.

In Pokémon Trozei!, players control Lucy Fleetfoot.

In the anime
In the anime, five of the player characters have been given major roles, three of them in the main anime series. Ash and Ritchie represent Red, being based on him in appearance as well as basic history. At the beginning of Advanced Generation, May was introduced in order to better represent Generation III to viewers, as both Misty and Brock are characters native to Generation I. Likewise, at the beginning of the Diamond & Pearl, Dawn joined Ash.

Jimmy and Marina appeared in The Legend of Thunder! special, taking a similar role to Ash and his companions, fighting Team Rocket members to protect legendary Pokémon. While the protagonists of Generation II were not represented in Ash's party, these two filled the roles as the anime counterparts to Gold and Kris.

So far, Brendan has only made a few select cameo appearances in the anime, while Lucas made a cameo at the beginning of Giratina and the Sky Warrior battling Brendan.

Trivia
* All of the female player characters from the main series who have been in the anime are Pokémon Coordinators either full-time or part-time.
* None of the male player characters from the main series (or their counterparts) have encountered Ash. Jimmy was the only one besides Ash to have more than merely a cameo. The only male player character in all of the Pokémon games to have encountered Ash is Kellyn of Ranger: Shadows of Almia.
* Leaf is the only player character from the handheld games so far not to appear in the anime either through a cameo or a counterpart.
* Kellyn, Kate, Todd, and Wes are the only player characters who do not wear any sort of headgear.
* Red's dialog during his appearance as an NPC in Generation II references the Pokémon games' player characters' status as silent protagonists. In those games, his dialog with the player character(s) of those games consists only of ellipses.
Pyramid King Brandon (Japanese: ピラミッドキング ジンダイ, Pyramid King Jindai) is the Frontier Brain and chief of the Battle Frontier's Battle Pyramid.

In the anime
Brandon's Japanese voice actor is 小室正幸 Masayuki Komuro, his English voice actor is Craig Blair, his Latin-American Spanish voice actor is Rolando del Castro and his Dutch voice actor is Frank Verkerk.

He is shrouded in mystery for most of the Battle Frontier saga. Unlike the other Brains, his silhouette is not shown on its own during the opening and is only seen in the center of the group shot. Trainers will only find out the location of the Battle Pyramid after they have collected the other six symbols. This may mean that Brandon ranks higher than the rest of the Frontier Brains, although in the video games and manga this position belongs to Anabel. When Ash finally gets his sixth Frontier Symbol in Second Time's the Charm, he learns that it is located near Pewter City.

The first battle with Brandon occurred in Battling the Enemy Within. However, Ash was possessed by an ancient king of the Pyramid who battled Brandon's Regirock with Ash's Sceptile. Sceptile unfortunately was defeated, though Ash eventually regained control of his body and the Pyramid was moved to an area near the Indigo Plateau.

For their second battle in Overjoyed!, Ash's Torkoal squared off against Brandon's Registeel. But it too was defeated by Brandon's Legendary Pokémon.

When Ash and co. met up with Brandon in a forest, in Gathering the Gang of Four, Brandon and Ash fought in a 4 vs 4 battle, in which Ash's Charizard, Squirtle, Bulbasaur, and Pikachu were pitted against Brandon's Dusclops, Ninjask, Solrock, and Regice, Ash deciding to bring back his oldest and most powerful Pokémon for this challenge. Although Charizard was defeated by Dusclops in the first round, Bulbasaur, Squirtle and Pikachu were able to overcome the rest of Brandon's Pokémon, Ash finally winning the Battle Frontier.
In the games
Any trainer arriving at the top of the pyramid just after Brandon must battle this Pyramid King for the status of the pyramid's conqueror.

Brandon appreciates the grand life of the explorer. He recalls the passion, danger, and desperation of his death-defying and life-affirming adventures. When defeated in battle, he'll praise the grandness of the match and hand over the Brave Symbol.
*First battle:
"Young adventurer… Wouldn’t you agree that explorations are the grandest of adventures? Your own wits! Your own strenght! Your own Pokémon! And, above all, only your courage to lead you through unknown worlds… Aah, yes, indeed this life is grand! Grand, it is! Eh? I’m Brandon. I’m the Pyramid King, which means I’m in charge here. Most people call me the chief! You coming here means you have that much confidence in yourself, am I right? Hahahah! This should be exciting! Now, then! Bring your courage to our battle!"

"That’s it! You’ve done great! You’ve worked hard for this! Hahahah! Grand it was! Grand, yes, indeed! Well done! You’ve earned recognition! Your Frontier Pass, please! Young explorer! I look forward to our next meeting! "

*Second battle:
"…You’ve finally returned, young explorer… Your love for adventure seems to come deep from within your heart… Yes… You are exactly as I was in my own youth… … … …Ah… The passionate! The dangerous! The desperate! Those days of death-defying, life-affirming adventures are back… Now, then! I sense my courage is off the meter! Everything you have! I’m braced for it all!"

"That’s it! You’ve done it! You kept working for this! Hahahah! Remarkable! Yes, it’s grand, indeed! Young explorer! You’ve dested me through and through! Here! I want you to have this! Ah, yes! It just goes to show that I have much to learn still! My our paths cross again! Farewell for now, young explorer!"
In the Pokémon Special manga
Brandon took witness to Emerald's battle with Noland and immediately refined his facility for him, just in case. He seems to carry a special dislike for Emerald, but treats him fairly - explaining the rules of the Battle Frontier and showing off his Pokémon to the boy before the challenge. He expects Emerald to be tired out during their confrontation, but is surprised to see that Emerald used a Phanpy's Pick Up ability to collect enough items to keep his team refreshed. Brandon says he favors one-hit KO moves like Explosion.

Pokémon

Ash's Pidgeot (Japanese: サトシのピジョット Satoshi's Pigeot) was the third Pokémon obtained by Ash Ketchum during his travels through the Kanto region. Its voice actor as Pidgeotto and Pidgeot in both Japanese and English is 林原めぐみ Megumi Hayashibara.

Ash caught it as a Pidgeotto in the Viridian Forest. It was Ash's first Flying-type Pokémon, but it was not used much; when it was, it was often to blow away Smokescreens and pop holes in Team Rocket's balloon.

After Ash returned to Pallet Town following the Indigo League, Ash encountered an old enemy. The Spearow Ash had tried to catch the first day of his journey had evolved into Fearow and was leading other wild Spearow in harassing the local Pidgey flock.

Pidgeotto evolved into Pidgeot and defeated the Fearow and Spearow, and Ash left it behind to guard the wild Pidgey. He promised to return for it after he was finished in the Orange Islands, a sentiment that he still hoped he could do in Fighting Flyer with Fire. However, Ash has yet to fulfill that promise.
Pokémon: Battle Frontier is the ninth season of the Pokémon anime and the final season of the Advanced Generation English-language dub. It is comprised of episodes 146-191 of the original Pocket Monsters Advanced Generation series. It follows Ash Ketchum as he continues to collect symbols from the Kanto Battle Frontier while May participates in Pokémon contests. It began with Fear Factor Phony, which originally aired on September 8, 2006 in the United States, and ended with Home is Where the Start Is, which originally aired on March 3, 2007.

The dub underwent many changes at the start of the season. 4Kids Entertainment's licensing rights to the dub expired and in an agreement with Pokémon USA they decided not to renew, resulting in a recasting controversy among some fans. Meanwhile, Kids' WB! (a broadcast network) dropped all anime from its lineup leading to Cartoon Network (a cable network) picking up the series.

It is preceded by Pokémon: Advanced Battle and is succeeded by Pokémon: Diamond and Pearl which starts the saga based on the upcoming Diamond and Pearl games. It should be noted that the concept of seasons does not exist in Japan. An invention of the American animation and television industry, a season is the only way to differentiate one story arc, such as Advanced Battle, from any other in the Pocket Monsters Advanced Generation series. Unlike in Japan, where episodes are aired almost every week of the year, in America episodes are aired in usually 52-episode blocs, or "seasons," for several months before taking a break of several months to allow production on the next batch of episodes to begin.

See the list of Advanced Generation episodes for a list of Pokémon: Battle Frontier episodes.
