Both May and Jessie each captured a Wurmple in All in a Day's Wurmple. May's Wurmple evolved into Silcoon in A Corphish Out of Water while Jessie's evolved into a Cascoon in the same episode (though she originally thought it to be a Silcoon).

NPC appearances

  • Pokémon Mystery Dungeon 2: Wurmple is one of the members of Team Tasty, alongside Swellow. A running joke is that Wurmple is terrified that Swellow is going to eat him, and that's why he named their team that.

Pokédex entries

Gen Game Pokédex entry
III Ruby Using the spikes on its rear end, Wurmple peels the bark off trees and feeds on the sap that oozes out. This Pokémon's feet are tipped with suction pads that allow it to cling to glass without slipping.
Sapphire Wurmple is targeted by Swellow as prey. This Pokémon will try to resist by pointing the spikes on its rear at the attacking predator. It will weaken the foe by leaking poison from the spikes.
Emerald It sticks to tree branches and eats leaves. The thread it spits from its mouth, which becomes gooey when it touches air, slows the movement of its foes.
FireRed It lives amidst tall grass and in forests. When attacked, it resists by pointing its venomous spikes at the foe.
LeafGreen It lives amidst tall grass and in forests. When attacked, it resists by pointing its venomous spikes at the foe.
IV Diamond It loves to eat leaves. If it is attacked by a Starly, it will defend itself with its spiked rear.
Pearl It spits a white silk that turns sticky when it contacts air. It is used to immobilize foes.

Trivia

  • Wurmple is the only regional caterpillar-based Pokémon (the other two of which are Caterpie and Weedle) that learns a move by leveling up without evolving.

Origin

Wurmple is based on a caterpillar. It also appears to resemble an earwig somewhat.

Name origin

Wurmple's name is a combination of worm and rumple, referring to the wrinkled texture of its skin. Its Japanese name is derived from 毛虫 kemushi, caterpillar.
