Biology

Physiology

Wobbuffet is a tall, cyan-colored blob-like creature with a black tail that has two eye-spots on it. Wobbuffet has flipper-like arms and a crooked expression on its face as a opposed to the perpetual smile that its un-evolved form has.

Gender differences

Female Wobbuffet appear to be wearing lipstick.

Special abilities

Wobbuffet is only capable of countering enemy attacks.

Behavior

When two Wobbuffet meet, they usually try to test each others' endurance. Even though Wobbuffet are classified as "Patient" Pokémon, a Wobbuffet belonging to a Pokémon Trainer often finds that his or her Wobbuffet tends to pop out of its Poké Ball by itself, shouting out in agreement of something someone said.

Habitat

Wobbuffet live in dark caves to keep their tail hidden.

In the anime

Jessie and Wobbuffet
Jessie and Wobbuffet

Jessie has a Wobbuffet that frequently emerges from its Poké Ball to shout its name or cause what Jessie considers to be trouble. It has appeared in almost every episode since she accidentally traded her Lickitung for it in Tricks of the Trade.

Wobbu-palooza featured a town in which everyone owned a Wobbuffet.

In the manga

In the Pokémon Special manga

Wobbuffet first appeared in Volume 11 under the ownership of Crystal's mother.

Other appearances

Super Smash Bros. Melee

When released from a Poké Ball, Wobbuffet will stand on the stage in one place. Anyone attacking or running into it will be damaged by its Counter, including the player who threw the Poké Ball.

Wobbuffet is also a Pokéfloat. It appears on its side and never fully reveals itself. When it first appears, it will quickly return off-screen but will then come back and remain to allow for fighting to take place on top of it.

Trophy information

A Patient Pokémon, Wobbuffet lives in darkness to hide its mismatched black tail. Even for a stoic Pokémon, this creature is a testament to self-control; it will not actively attack an opponent. Its Counter and Mirror Coat moves are solely used for reflecting attacks directly back at its antagonist.

Trivia

  • Its name, when paired with the Japanese name of its pre-evolution, Wynaut, ソーナノ Sohnano, makes for a potential perpetual conversation of "that's the way it is" followed by "really?", and so on, as seen in Camp Pikachu.
  • Wobbuffet is the one of the two non-legendary Pokémon to be considered "uber" in the metagame due to its HP stat, attacks, and ability overcentralizing the game completely. All its trainer needs to do when using Wobbuffet is predict whether the opponent's next attack will be physical or special to deal double damage. They can also use Encore and instantly apply the previous move. In addition, because of its ability, a Mirror Match or a Wynaut Vs. Wobbuffet in a 1-on-1 battle can instantly lock the game for more than 70 turns or permanently if both Pokémon are equipped with Leftovers. This was fixed in the Generation IV games to prevent such an event; Pokémon with Shadow Tag can freely switch out of other Pokémon with Shadow Tag.
  • Wobbuffet has the third highest base HP stat in the game, after Blissey and Chansey.
  • Wobbuffet is one of fourteen Pokémon that one could collect foreign Pokédex entries for.

Origin

It is based on the late Japanese comedian 林家三平 Sanpei Hayashiya, who was famous for repeatedly touching his hand to his forehead while saying one of his trademark lines, そうなんす、奥さん sō na-n-su, okusan, "That's the way it is, ma'am."

In addition, its form and available moves are based on a punching bag; that is, when it is hit, it bounces back.

Name origin

Wobbuffet's name is a combination of wobble and buffet, meaning to strike repeatedly, possibly referring to its action of slapping its own forehead. Its Japanese name is homophonous with the interjection そうなんす sō na-n-su, which roughly means "that's the way it is."

In other languages

  • German: Woingenau - Means "Where to, exactly?"
  • French: Qulbutoke - A play on Culbuto and the expression OK.
  • Korean: 마자용 Majayong - A play on Majayo, which means "That's correct/That's right".
