Weedle (Japanese: ビードル Beedle) is a dual-type Bug/Poison Pokémon.

It evolves into Kakuna starting at level 7, who evolves into Beedrill starting at level 10.

Contents

Biology

Physiology

Weedle is a small, yellow larva Pokémon with a segmented body. Weedle has dark, circular eyes, many little pink feet and a pink, round nose. Weedle has a stinger on both its tail and head. Its bright coloration is intended to warn off its enemies.

Gender differences

None.

Special abilities

Weedle isn't very powerful, but it can spit a sticky thread to entangle its foes with String Shot. It can also use one of its stingers to poison a foe with Poison Sting.

Behavior

Weedle generally prefer to remain undisturbed. They live in colonies with their evolved forms, Kakuna and Beedrill, and will recruit them to assist in their revenge if bothered.

Habitat

Weedle can be found in forests, misty wooded areas, and grasslands. Weedle usually hides in grass and bushes, under the leaves that it eats. It is commonly found in Kanto and Johto, although it also can be encountered in Sinnoh on rare occasions.

Diet

Main article: Pokémon food

Weedle primarily eat leaves. They appear to prefer some leaves over others, and they can distinguish between them by smelling them with their big red proboscis, or nose. Weedle eats such a copious amount that it eats its weight in leaves every day.

Trivia

  • Weedle is the only Pokémon incapable of learning Normal moves, if Hidden Power's inability to be a Normal move in practice is not considered in Unown's case.
  • Despite being classified as the Hairy Bug Pokémon, no artwork of it depicts it having any hair at all.
  • Up until Platinum, Weedle was completely incapable of dealing damage to Steel-type Pokémon outside of Struggle. This was because Weedle could only learn Poison Sting, which Steel-types are immune to. In Platinum, Weedle can learn Bug Bite. However, Steel-types still resist moves of its type.
  • Weedle, along with Caterpie and Wurmple, evolves at level 7, the lowest set level in the games (though Pokémon that evolve by level up with another method can evolve as low as level 1).
  • Despite most of its Generation III Pokédex entries mentioning its acute sense of smell, Weedle cannot learn Odor Sleuth.

Origin

Weedle appears to be based on a larva (baby form) of a bee.

Name origin

Weedle's name appears to be a misspelling of weevil, but this is not likely, considering the difference between the two. Its name is more likely a combination of worm and needle, which refers to the stingers on its body. Beedle is similar, but refers to bees instead.

In other languages

  • German: Hornliu - From horn, referring to the stinger on Weedle's head.
  • French: Aspicot - From asticot (maggot), and picot (dot, referring to the circles on its body) or pic (point, referring to the horn on its head).
  • Korean: 뿔충이 Ppulchungi - "Horned Insect' in an affectionate manner ('i' at the end).
  • Chinese (Taiwan): 獨角蟲 Dú Jîau Chóng - "Single-horned bug".
  • Chinese (Hong Kong): 獨角蟲 Dú Jîa Chóng - "Single-horned bug".
