Topps Pokémon Trading Cards were a series of anime-based cards. Each card featured either a Pokémon, an anime episode, or an anime character. In the later sets, and evolutionary path cards were introduced. Each set also had a specific checklist card. In some sets, some of the cards could be arranged so that their backsides formed a larger image.

Much like in the current Pokémon Trading Card Game boosters, in every booster there was a special holofoil version of a random card.

Pokémon cards

Original series cards

The front side of the card features a Pokémon. This image is either taken from an anime episode or is original art. At the bottom, the number and name of the Pokémon are shown. The card has a specific background depending on the first type of the Pokémon.

The other side lists again the number and name as well as the first type of the Pokémon. On the left side is another image of the Pokémon, again either from an anime screenshot or as original art. On the right side some details of the Pokémon, including its major roles in anime episodes, are listed. The first episode the Pokémon appeared in is also listed. Finally, the bottom-left corner features a Who's That Pokémon?-style silhouette with the number of that Pokémon listed.

Johto series cards

Like the original cards, these cards have also a generic picture of the Pokémon, its number and name, and a background defined by the first type on their front side. The types are now written on the front side.

The back of the card shows another image of the Pokémon, lists its number, name and types and has some general information about the Pokémon.

Anime episode cards

The front side of the card has a screenshot of the episode, and its name and unofficial episode code are also written on it. The other side has another shot of the episode and a short synopsis of the events during it.

Character cards

Movie scene cards

Much like anime episode cards, these cards also have a screenshot on each side of the card as well as a short synopsis of the said scene.

Trivia

  • Two cards from the first set misspelled two Pokémon names; Ninetales was called Ninetails while Victreebel was called Victreebell.
  • Although every set had a checklist card, only some sets' checklist cards actually included itself as a card in that set.
    • Strangely, some of these checklist cards do not list all cards in the set.
  • For some reason, the episode cards in the Johto League Champions set have different titles to what the episodes actually had.
