User:Missingno. Master/Celebi Glitch
From Bulbapedia, the community-driven Pokémon encyclopedia.
The Celebi Glitch is an error in the programming of early copies of Ruby and Sapphire Versions enabling the appearance of a wild Celebi on Route 121 and Route 123. Due to the small number of games in which the glitch actually occur, as well as the even smaller chance of the glitch happening in the games in which it can occur, it is misconstrued by many fans as false, notably including Serebii, webmaster of Serebii.net. The glitch
It is said that a certain (currently unknown) event triggers the appearance of Celebi on Route 121. Also, Celebi has exactly a 1 in 268,435,456 chance of appearing on Route 123, due to a "floating" code on that route. Both of these instances occur only in early American releases of Ruby and Sapphire. It is unknown if this glitch exists in any other language release of the games. It is, however, completely nonexistant in any known release of Pokémon Emerald.
Apparently, if one has used a cheating device to illegally obtain any items or Pokémon, and have any hacked items or Pokémon upon the glitch activating, a glitched Celebi will appear that will have an adverse effect on gameplay. [2]
Theories
While the 1 in 268,435,456 chance of Celebi appearing on Route 123 is self-explanatory, it is not yet known what triggers its appearance on Route 121.
- Several theories state that it might be a time-triggered event, not unlike the Berry Glitch. This could be related to certain games performing otherwise inexplicable quirks due to their age.
- Another theory claims that the glitch is triggered by a certain HEX event on Route 121, but what the event is (or even if there is one) is currently unknown.
Controversy
Unlike most glitches within the Pokémon games, the Celebi Glitch is often cited as false, for several reasons.
- The fact that the glitch only occurs in early releases of the games in America has led numerous people (namely, just about anyone who didn't buy Ruby and Sapphire Versions as soon as they came out, or else bought non-American versions of the game) to believe that the glitch does not exist.
- There is also the fact that the Celebi in question has a 1 in 268,435,456 chance of appearing, effectively making it noticeably rarer than a shiny Pokémon. This has discouraged numerous people from pursuing such a Celebi, and in turn, convinced some that the glitch does not exist.
- Also, Nintendo sources have denied the existance of the glitch. However, this could easily be due to their determination to keep Celebi as an event-exclusive Pokémon.
Trivia
- One of the most outspoken disbelievers of the Celebi Glitch ironically has Celebi as his favorite Pokémon.
- It is commonly rumored that the Celebi produced by this glitch can run away from the battle. However, this has yet to be proven, due to the fact that the Celebi in question is extremely rare, and that most people will not want to risk testing this, epecially if it means passing up a rare Pokémon.
- The staff of Bulbapedia believes this glitch to be false, which is why this page now resides in the userspace.
