Priority

Priority is a property of several moves that deals with the order of moves used in a turn. While the order of moves used in a turn are normally determined by the Speed stat of each Pokémon, priority-based moves ignore this rule.

Increased priority moves are moves that force the user to go first. Damaging moves with increased priority generally offer greater speed at the cost of lower power, such as Quick Attack and Aqua Jet. An exception to this rule is ExtremeSpeed, which has higher priority over other damaging moves with increased priority. Non-damaging moves with increased priority are often used to parry or sustain damage, such as Protect or Endure. Non-damaging moves with increased priority always go before damaging moves with increased priority. In the event that both Pokémon use damaging moves with increased priority, then the order is normally determined by their Speed. Likewise, if both Pokémon use non-damaging moves with increased priority, the order is normally determined by their Speed.

Decreased priority moves are moves that force the use to go last, such as Counter and Magic Coat. Moves with decreased priority are typically used in response to other Pokémon moves. In the event that both Pokémon use a decreased priority move, the order is normally determined by their Speed.

Held items can be used to change the priority of moves. Items such as Quick Claw occasionally allows the user to move first while Lagging Tail and Full Incense forces the user to move last.
