Samantha (Japanese: アスカ Asuka) is a character in the Pokémon anime and a rival of Ash Ketchum. Her English voice actress is Sarah Natochenny and her Japanese voice actress is Kaori Aso.

Ash and friends first encounter Samantha in DP144 while on their way through the Valor Lakefront where Dawn was to have her next contest. She was in the area because she wanted to watch her friend Cody who was also participating in the contest and also a rival of Dawn. She explained to the group that she was also wanted to participate in the Sinnoh conference. Ash was impressed and challenged her to a one on one battle to see what he was up against. It was Pikachu against her Froslass, Krystal. However Krystal proved too strong for Pikachu to handle and it ended up losing the battle.

In DP147, they met up with Samantha and Cody once more in Sunyshore City. She had just won her eighth badge. This time Ash decided to ask Professor Oak to send over his Glalie so that it could meet Krystal. Glalie was head over heels for Krystal and the feeling was mutual.

In DP159, she was to battle Paul in the fourth round of the Sinnoh Conference. Paul then critizied her saying that she can't be that great of a trainer since her then Grovyle, Jaken, had yet to evolve fully. She as well as Jaken were angered by this. Samantha told him that Jaken refused to evolve for so long in order to prove himself. The double battle then began with Samantha using Jaken, and Tiny, her Mantine against Paul and his Electabuzz and Honchrow. Even though she was at a serious type disadvantage her experiance and patience landed her a win agains Paul. Ash was in great shock. Samantha tried to tell Paul that he did a nice job but Paul quickly turned away and left the arena without saying a word.

In DP161, she was then assigned to battle Ash for the championship. But before there battle started, Team Rocket were stealing Pokémon from the other participants. Ash and Samantha set out to stop them by using Grotle and Jaken, respectively. A battle insued and by some coincidence, both Grotle and Jaken evolved at the same time. Grotle, now Torterra, and Jaken, who evolved into Sceptile, both learned Leaf Storm and sent Team Rocket flying.

After that, Samantha and Ash could finally have there battle. It was a full party double battle that would have three rounds. Who ever won the most rounds would win. The first battle was Ruby, her Vespiquen, and Shadow, her Absol, against Ash's Monferno and Ash's Buizel. It was a win for her but a loss for Ash. The next round had Tiny and Amy, Samantha's Luxray, against Ash's Pikachu and Staraptor. She had a good plan to have Tiny use Protect while Amy used Discharge. This knocked out Staraptor almost instantly. But thanks to Pikachu's new move Feint, it broke Tiny's barrier. Then with the use of Volt Tackle, it managed to knock out Tiny and later defeated Amy as well. It was now 50-50. The final battle came around. Samantha used Crystal and Jaken and Ash used Torterra and Glalie. Off the bat, Samantha told Krystal to use Attract on Glalie leaving it completely immobolized for most of the battle. Later it over came its infatuation. Both Krystal and Glalie fired Ice Beams at one another that resulted in an explosion knocking the two Ice-type Pokémon out. It was now Jaken and Torterra. After an amazing show of strength both decided to finish the battle with Leaf Storm. A barrage of leaves swarmed over the arena leaving the audiance blinded for a second. Both Pokémon stood firm but it was Jaken who fell first. Samantha had lost the battle and Ash had become champion of a conference for the very first time. She congratulated him for his first league championship. Later on Samantha made a deal with Ash that they would meet again someday and shook on it. This caused Ash to blush. However Ash's mouth dropped to the ground when he saw Samantha grab Cody's hand as they walked away. He was a bit sulky for a little bit, but soon got over it.

Samantha is also a rival of Harrison who started on his journey the same time she and Cody did. Harrison chose Torchic, Cody chose Mudkip, and she, who had arrived late, was left with Treecko. Luckly it's what she wanted. Harrison defeated her in the Ever Grande conference who then went on to become the champion. Since the defeat Samantha always strived to become stronger and eventually placed best eight in the Silver Conference and became champion of the Indigo League.

• She is the first female rival that Ash had befriended who he had to face in a Pokémon League competition. This might be a realition to how Cynthia was the first female Champion who the player had to face.
• She is the third rival from Hoenn that Ash had to face in the Pokémon League and the second to have a Sceptile as one of their Pokémon. The first being Tyson.
