Jaken, Samantha's Sceptile (Japanese: ジャケン、アスカのジュカイン Jaken, Asuka's Jukain) is a Sceptile owned by Samantha. His English voice actor is Bill Rogers and his Japanese voice actor is Kappei Yamaguchi. In flash backs as a Treecko, he was voiced by Tomoko Kawakami in Japanese.

Jaken first debuted in DP147, as a Grovyle after Team Rocket attempted to steal Krystal and Ash's Glalie. Samantha used Jaken to stop Team Rocket with the help of Ash's Grotle.

Jaken was Samantha's starter Pokémon which she recieved in Littleroot Town from Professor Birch a few days after her tenth birthday. Its first battle was against Cody, who also started out that day, and his Mudkip. Because Samantha was more focused on winning rather than skill, Jaken lost. As time went on, Samantha became a better trainer and Jaken became stronger and stronger and eventually evolved into Grovyle.

Samantha used Jaken in the Ever Grande Conference against Harrison and his Blaziken. But the odds weren't in their favor being that there was a type disadvantage and Jaken lost which resulted in Samantha losing the competition.

Cody often said that Jaken would be much stronger if he would evolve. But Jaken, taking that saying as an insult, wanted to prove that he didn't need to evolve to become stronger. He held off his own evolution for years.

Jaken has a scar above his right eye. He got it when he tried to protect Samantha from a group of angry Beedrill. One slashed his eye while trying to get at his trainer. After Cody's Kirlia got rid of the Beedrill, Samantha rushed him to a Pokémon Center. Her worst fear was that Jaken would no longer be able to see out of that eye. Luckily, Nurse Joy said that Beedrill didn't touch his eye. But he still bares the scar of the events that occured that day.

Samantha used Jaken and her Mantine, Tiny, against Paul and his Electabuzz and Honchkrow in DP159. Jaken was already infuriated with Paul after he told Samantha that she was a weak trainer because Jaken was not fully evolved. In the end both he and Tiny were able to beat Electabuzz and Honchkrow which resulted in Paul's loss.

In DP161, Jaken finally evolved into Sceptile while trying to stop Team Rocket from stealing other trainers' Pokémon. During this time, Ash's Grotle also evloved and both Pokémon learned the move Leaf Storm. Later on Samantha and Ash were set to battle in a three round double battle. In the final round, the two trainers were tied and it was Jaken and Krystal against Ash's newly evolved Torterra as well as Glalie. Towards the end of the battle, Jaken and Torterra were left to fight solo after their partners fainted. Both of them showed off powerful Leaf Storm attacks, but in the end, it was Torterra who came up the victor. Still, to Samantha, Jaken was the true victor.

Jaken sometimes feels that he's second best compared to Krystal whom Samantha uses very often. Sometimes he will push himself too hard in order to prove his worthiness.

Trivia

• Jaken would be the second Sceptile that Ash would battle in the finals of a conference. The first of course was Tyson's Sceptile during the Ever Grande Conference in Hoenn.
• Jaken is named after the servant of of Sesshōmaru from the anime and manga, InuYasha. Also Shadow's, Samantha's Absol, Japanese name is derived from Sesshōmaru's name.
