User:Kenji-girl/Anime Pokémon Gender Theories
From Bulbapedia, the community-driven Pokémon encyclopedia.
There has been A LOT of controversy around Bulbapedia about what the genders are of many of the anime characters Pokémon. I'd like to share my insight to what I believe to be the true genders of the characters Pokémon and my reasons for believing it. Keep in mind that I will mark some of them with a ? mark meaning that they have really shown no personallity traits that might make me believe what their gender is.

The Heroes Pokémon
Ash Ketchum's Pokémon
Original series
| Pokémon | Gender |
|---|---|
![]() Pikachu | ♂ |
I think I speak for everyone when I say that Ash's Pikachu is male. No it's not that Pikachu lacks the indent in the tail, it's because Pikachu shows many male mannerisms. The times that Pikachu would dress up, except that time where Misty imagined it in a dress, it would usually wear male clothing such as a tuxedo and top hat. Also Dawn's Buneary, who shows many female mannerisms, is in love with Pikachu. Not saying that it couldn't be possible that Buneary is a lesbian, it's just what I think.

→ → ![]() Caterpie → Metapod → Butterfree | ♂ |
It's not because it lacks the black part on its wings. In Bye Bye Butterfree, it fell in love with a pink, usually a color associated with girls, Butterfree. At first it rejected it in the ususal mannerisms of a female. Brock said that he could relate to Butterfree because of all the rejections he got from women. Eventually the pink Butterfree excepted Ash's Butterfree and the two flew away together. The lesbian theory can be completely thrown out on this one because they were migrating in order to mate. Two girl Butterfree can't do that.
| Pokémon | Gender |
|---|---|
→ ![]() Pidgeotto → Pidgeot | ? |
I really can't determine this one. It really hasn't shown any gender specific mannerisms so I'm stumped.
| Pokémon | Gender |
|---|---|
![]() Bulbasaur | ♂ |
The main reason that I believe this is that Bulbasaur's mannerisms indicate that its a male. Mostly because of its toughness and its eagerness to battle. Not saying that girl's wouldn't do the same. Also Bulbasaur fell in love with a Gloom in Make Room for Gloom that seemed to be female. Going on game statistics, there is a bigger chance that a Bulbasaur that one encounters would be male rather than female.
| Pokémon | Gender |
|---|---|
→ → ![]() Charmander → Charmeleon → Charizard | ♂ |
Again, it shows mannerisms that are seen in males. Plus it is in love with a Charizard that wears a giant pink bow on its head. Also the game statistics factor in as well.
| Pokémon | Gender |
|---|---|
![]() Squirtle | ♂ |
Same as Charizard and Bulbasaur. It has male mannerisms, so therfore I'm assuming it is male.
| Pokémon | Gender |
|---|---|
→ ![]() Krabby → Kingler | ? |
Same as Pidgeot, it did not show enought of its personallity in order for me to determine its gender.
| Pokémon | Gender |
|---|---|
![]() Primeape | ♂ |
It seemed to have male mannerisms. I'm guessing that it's male.
| Pokémon | Gender |
|---|---|
![]() Tauros (x30) | ♂ |
No argument here. Tauros is a MALE ONLY species.
| Pokémon | Gender |
|---|---|
![]() Muk | ♂ |
This was a tough one. Despite it loving to get on top of and give massages to human males, I still believe its male. The only female character I can recall Muk smothering was Jessie. I know the evidence might point to female, but I truely believe its a male that loves guys and evil women.
| Pokémon | Gender |
|---|---|
![]() Lapras | ? |
Though it had a personality, none of its mannerisms seemed to be gender specific so I have no idea.
| Pokémon | Gender |
|---|---|
![]() Snorlax | ♂ |
I'm only assuming because of the game machanics factor. Snorlax is a mostly male species.
| Pokémon | Gender |
|---|---|
![]() Heracross | ♂ |
I can't be for certain on this one. Other than its horn is the shape of male Heracross that's all I really have. Yes, I know all Heracross looked like that prior to Gen IV. But heard there is other evidence that it is male.
| Pokémon | Gender |
|---|---|
→ ![]() Chikorita → Bayleef | ♀ |
FINALLY! A female Pokémon. My reason's for believing that Bayleef is female is because of its relationship-like love for Ash. It becomes extremely jealous when Ash would pay attention to his other Pokémon, mainly Pikachu, rather than pay attention to it. It also seems to ride on its emotions the same way girls do. (Not trying to be sexist).
| Pokémon | Gender |
|---|---|
![]() Cyndaquil | ♂ |
Going on the game mechanics again. Cyndaquil are mostly male.
| Pokémon | Gender |
|---|---|
![]() Totodile | ♂ |
Besides game mechanics, Totodile has other evidence that it's male. In Love, Totodile Style, Totodile fell in love with an Azumarill, which wore a bow on its tail. Brock tried to get Totodile and Azumarill together so that he could score with Azumarill's trainer. Too bad for Totodile that Azumarill didn't like it and she ended up with a Golduck. No need to fear. Totodile then falls in love with a Quagsire that wore a bow on its head.
| Pokémon | Gender |
|---|---|
![]() Noctowl | ? |
No gender specific mannerisms.
| Pokémon | Gender |
|---|---|
→ Phanpy → Donphan | ♂ |
I'm only guessing this because Donphan's voice in Japanese sounds male. Usually the seiyūs can detetermine gender. Especially if the voice is male-sounding. Which is another reason why I thought Muk is male.
Advance Generation
| Pokémon | Gender |
|---|---|
→ Taillow → Swellow | ♂ |
Meh... Only because its seiyū is male. I don't know.
| Pokémon | Gender |
|---|---|
→ → ![]() Treecko → Grovyle → Sceptile | ♂ |
No other Pokémon has shown more male mannerisms than this one right here. In The Odd Pokémon Out, Grovyle fell in love with what seemed to be a female Meganium. It even fought a Tropius to win its love. Unfortunately for it, the Meganium loved the Tropius. Grovyle was so mad that it evolved? Then it forgot its moves for a little bit then remembered them again. Hey, does anyone think that Sceptile and Bayleef should get together? I mean she might evolve into Meganium and then... (Barry White).
| Pokémon | Gender |
|---|---|
![]() Corphish | ♂ |
In Once in a Mawile Corphish had a crush with a Mawile that seemed to be female. However that Mawile was in love with Brock's Lombre and smacked Corphish away with its hair-mouth thing.
| Pokémon | Gender |
|---|---|
![]() Torkoal | ? |
Not really sure about this one.
| Pokémon | Gender |
|---|---|
→ ![]() Snorunt → Glalie | ♂ |
I don't know. I only like to think its male cause I think its gonna get with a certian Froslass some day. It's just a fan thing.
Diamond & Pearl
| Pokémon | Gender |
|---|---|
→ ![]() Starly → Staravia | ♂ |
Male seiyū usually is a give away for male Pokémon. Also the spot on its head would determine that it is male.
| Pokémon | Gender |
|---|---|
![]() Turtwig | ♂ |
Gender ratio leans to it being male. Plus male seiyū.
| Pokémon | Gender |
|---|---|
![]() Chimchar | ♂ |
Gender ratio... But I don't know. It maybe a girl cause of its seiyū. I might change my mind on this one.
| Pokémon | Gender |
|---|---|
![]() Buizel | ♂ |
If it acts like a guy, has patterns of a guy, has a guy seiyū, then guess what? IT IS A GUY.
| Pokémon | Gender |
|---|---|
![]() Gligar | ? |
Not very sure right now.
Misty's Pokémon
| Pokémon | Gender |
|---|---|
![]() Goldeen | ♀ |
I guess its female. I always thought of Goldeen has a female Pokémon anyway.
| Pokémon | Gender |
|---|---|
![]() Staryu | × |
WHAZ DIS! NO GENDER! But it sounds like a man.
| Pokémon | Gender |
|---|---|
![]() Starmie | × |
ACK! NO GENDER AGEEN! But it sounds like a woman.
| Pokémon | Gender |
|---|---|
![]() Horsea | ♀ |
Seemed girly to me. Poor Horsea... Misty forgot about you once she got Togepi.
| Pokémon | Gender |
|---|---|
![]() Psyduck | ♂ |
Didn't that Wigglytuff fall in love with it in Lights, Camera, Quacktion!? And since Wigglytuff are a female dominated species, there's a good chance that Psyduck is male.
| Pokémon | Gender |
|---|---|
→ ![]() Togepi → Togetic | ♂ |
I've always thought of it as male. Game mechanics factor in as well. Togepi and Togetic are a male dominated species.
| Pokémon | Gender |
|---|---|
→ → ![]() Poliwag → Poliwhirl → Politoed | ♂ |
I don't know... I feel that its male.
| Pokémon | Gender |
|---|---|
![]() Corsola | ♀ |
Cause Corsola is a female dominated species.
| Pokémon | Gender |
|---|---|
![]() Gyarados | ? |
Umm... I have no clue. It doesn't have a gender specific behavior. It behaves just like any other Gyarados which is mad as hell.
| Pokémon | Gender |
|---|---|
![]() Caserin | ♂ |
Its been confirmed by Misty as being male. Good enough evidence for me.
| Pokémon | Gender |
|---|---|
![]() Azurill | ♀ |
Again, female dominated species. Educated guess.
Brock's Pokémon
| Pokémon | Gender |
|---|---|
![]() Geodude | ♂ |
Guessing because both of its voice actors, English and Japanese, are male.
| Pokémon | Gender |
|---|---|
→ ![]() Onix → Steelix | ♂ |
Again, male seiyū. Also it has two fangs which are seen in male Steelix. Though... all Steelix looked like that prior to Gen 4.
| Pokémon | Gender |
|---|---|
→ → ![]() Zubat → Golbat → Crobat | ♂ |
Because of Hassle in the Castle. Brock once again uses his Pokémon to try to have something in common with a girl. Dr. Anna had what appeared to be a female Zubat named "Mimi" who wore a white bow around her neck. I think Brock wanted his Zubat to get with Mimi so he'd have an excuse to stay with Anna.
| Pokémon | Gender |
|---|---|
![]() Vulpix | ♀ |
Because of game mechanics again. Plus I always thought of it as femle
| Pokémon | Gender |
|---|---|
→ ![]() Pineco → Forretress | ♂ |
Male seiyū.
| Pokémon | Gender |
|---|---|
→ → ![]() Lotad → Lombre → Ludicolo | ♂ |
In Once in a Mawile, a female Mawhile fell it love with it when it was a Lombre. Yet again, Brock tries to use a Pokémon to get to second base with a girl. Once it evolved Mawile wasn't attracted to it anymore and then fell in love with Georgio's Psyduck. Damn what is it with all these females falling in love with the Psyduck family? First the Wigglytuff, then Misty falls in love with that Golduck, Totodile loses its first love to a Golduck, and now this! Obvious Psyduck knows how to win a woman's heart.
| Pokémon | Gender |
|---|---|
→ ![]() Mudkip → Marshtomp | ♂ |
It fell in love with what seemed to be a female Flaaffy.
| Pokémon | Gender |
|---|---|
→ ![]() Bonsly → Sudowoodo | ♂ |
Umm seems clingy like a female -shot- but... I still think it's an over emotional male.
| Pokémon | Gender |
|---|---|
![]() Croagunk | ♂ |
I think it's a guy. Some think it's jealous female who doesn't want to flirt with other girls, but I just think he tries to prevent Brock from making a fool of himself.
| Pokémon | Gender |
|---|---|
![]() Happiny | ♀ |
It's a given.
Tracey's Pokémon
| Pokémon | Gender |
|---|---|
![]() Venonat | ? |
Umm, yeah... No mannerisms what so ever.
| Pokémon | Gender |
|---|---|
![]() Marill | ♀ |
I know it's pretty much unconfirmed if Marill was the one who bore the egg, but I still think it's female. I've always felt that Marill had that motherly quality about it. You know, when it let Togepi play with its tail. And its usually, in the animal world, the female parent who would stick by the baby.
| Pokémon | Gender |
|---|---|
| Scyther | ♂ |
I've disputed this one a couple of times myself. Its mannerisms say that it's male, no doubt about that. But in the real insect world, it's usually the female who rules. I mean it could be possible considering that his Scyther was the leader of a swarm. However, praying mantises are solitary insects and don't stay in swarms. Well if it's a male, than it should stay away from a female Scyther to avoid getting its head bit off.
May's Pokémon
Dawn's Pokémon
| Pokémon | Gender |
|---|---|
![]() Piplup | ♂ |
Seems to have an attitude of a guy. But it does dress in a cheerleader outfit. Maybe it has gender confusion.
| Pokémon | Gender |
|---|---|
![]() Buneary | ♀ |
Who ever thinks this is not a girl is out of their mind.
| Pokémon | Gender |
|---|---|
![]() Pachirisu | ♂ |
I don't know. Seems male. The stripe on its head.
| Pokémon | Gender |
|---|---|
→ ![]() Aipom → Ambipom | ♀ |
Still wondering why this was desputed for so long. It was confimered by two different characters to be female. Not to mention it likes to wear dresses and flowers. People love to use the excuse that the two hairs on Aipom's head are not long enough to be female. Talk about n00bish. Well now that it evolved, its hairs look like the female Ambipom's.
