This book follows the plot of the anime episode Bound For Trouble.

Ash and his Pokémon Pikachu, along with Misty and Tracey, are traveling in the Orange Archipelago. Tracey mentions that there are a lot of Rhydon and Pidgeot on the island, and that they grew very big because they had so much to eat. The group notices a basket of fruit in their path and Ash goes to eat it, but Misty stops him and points out that the fruit looks a little suspicious sitting on the path. They decide to pick some apples off a tree instead. As they walk towards the tree, they fall into a hole in the ground. Jessie, James and Meowth from Team Rocket are responsible for the trap. Jessie and James call out their Arbok and Weezing. Ash calls on Pikachu to shock Team Rocket, but they have rubber shields to protect them. Arbok and Weezing attack Pikachu with their Poison Sting and Poison Gas attacks. While Pikachu is hurt, Meowth locks a belt around it, attaching the two Pokémon. Suddenly, a giant Pidgeot swoops down and grabs Meowth and Pikachu by the cable holding them together. As they are carried away, Meowth loses his rubber shield and becomes vulnerable to Pikachu's electric attacks. Pikachu shocks Meowth, and then the Pidgeot which lets go as a result of the blast. As the two Pokémon are falling, they flip each other over to try to get the other to break their fall. Eventually, Pikachu lands on top of Meowth. The Pokémon try to break the cord holding them together but Jessie is the holder of the only key and pulling the cord proves to be useless. Meowth and Pikachu argue over which way to go, but after an electric shock, Meowth, lets Pikachu lead the way. Meowth then tries to trick Pikachu into following him to his boss, by telling it he will bring it back to Ash and his friends. Pikachu, however, sees through his plan and the two begin searching for their Trainers. Pikachu then stops in its tracks to see a giant Rhydon looking down at them. The two Pokémon begin to run and Rhydon chases after them. Eventually they come to a dead end and conclude that they must work together to fight the Rhydon. Meowth tickles the giant Pokémon, and it opens its mouth to laugh. Pikachu then sends a Thunder Wave into its open mouth, causing it to faint. On another part of the island, Tracey's Marill is using its tracking skills to help Ash look for Pikachu. Misty's Togepi notices the footprints of Meowth and Pikachu in the mud. Jessie and James also search for Meowth and Pikachu from their hot air balloon. Meanwhile, Meowth and Pikachu fight over an apple they found growing on a tree. In the end, Pikachu gets the apple but gives half to Meowth. It's already late once they finish eating. Meowth proposes that Pikachu should join Team Rocket with him, and that they could be good friends. Pikachu however, had already fallen asleep. The two wake up the next morning to Pidgeot and Rhydon chasing after them. As they run, they see Ash in the distance, as well as Jessie and James in the air in their balloon. Ash and Jessie call out their Snorlax and Arbok to take on the giant Pokémon chasing Meowth and Pikachu. Arbok chases Pidgeot away while Snorlax uses a Mega Punch, causing Rhydon to faint. Meowth and Pikachu greet their Trainers. While Ash is naturally glad to see that Pikachu is okay, Jessie and James claimed to have found Meowth by mistake while trying to catch a giant Rhydon. They then grab Meowth, trying to pull both him and Pikachu away. As Ash holds onto the cord, he calls out his Bulbasaur to battle with James's Victreebel. Pikachu uses another Thunder Wave on Arbok. As Bulbasaur and Victreebel battle, they get too close to Jessie who drops the key to Pikachu and Meowth's belt out of fear. Ash grabs the key and unlocks Pikachu from the belt. Bulbasaur chases Team Rocket back to their balloon, however they are not prepared to give up the fight yet. Misty calls out her Staryu, but instead, her Psyduck comes out. As Team Rocket try to make a getaway in their balloon, Misty commands Psyduck to use its Confusion attack. But before Psyduck can do anything, Togepi lifts its arms and looks at Team Rocket. Suddenly, their balloon explodes and they are sent blasting off. Misty wonders if Togepi was responsible for the attack. Pikachu and Ash are glad to be finally together again.
