In the anime

What exactly are we looking for to complete the "In the Anime" section. Also, would the tag battle in the beginning of the 12th movie be significant enough? –MasterKenobi 07:30, 23 November 2009 (UTC)

Cheating Pokéfan Bastards

Is it worth note here that Georgia and Jeremy on the S.S. Aqua can team up to have an eight-on-six battle with the trainer? I don't know if this is unique. Colintron 22:24, 2 May 2010 (UTC)

Clair and Lance

I hear it's a one-time deal. Is it? ht14 22:43, 2 May 2010 (UTC)

It seems to be. Who put up the statement that they could be battled multiple times? You should ask that user. CuboneKing 22:49, 2 May 2010 (UTC)
I just looked, it was Dialgafan1... CuboneKing 22:54, 2 May 2010 (UTC)

Sorry, I thought it was more than once but I did some google searching and found out that they can't be battled more than once. Dialgafan1 23:43, 2 May 2010 (UTC)

Cool :D I'll remove "sometimes". CuboneKing 23:46, 2 May 2010 (UTC)

Wait, apparently Clair's page implied that she could be battled with Lance more than once. I don't know what to believe. Dialgafan1 23:48, 2 May 2010 (UTC)

Then don't assume anything. Try for yourself before adding anything. ht14 00:03, 3 May 2010 (UTC)
I'm sure I read elsewhere that it was multiple times. I'm sure I also read that the tag battle affects Silver appearing for battles with the player. Does rebattling the Elite Four change anything? —darklordtrom 10:33, 3 May 2010 (UTC)

Title

According to the first line of this article, the in-game term is "Multi Battle," not "Tag Battle." Why, then, is this page located at the latter? Pumpkinking0192 (talk) 17:31, 7 February 2014 (UTC)

I think it may be at that because whoever named the article didn't attempt using the link battle feature in gen. 3 or 4, and named it with the animé's name. Pikachu Bros. (talk) 22:03, 26 February 2014 (UTC)
As no action had been made for several months, and there was no dissent against making the move, I moved the article and modified its contents accordingly. I also fixed the Battle mode template to avoid the redirect, and a couple other links to the page, but I'm sure there are plenty that still hit the redirect.Satosuke (talk) 00:47, 28 May 2014 (UTC)
For the record, I agree that this page should use the game terminology than the anime one. Though I don't exactly like how this was moved without an admin approval. Next time, wait for an approval. But if it seems like their isn't going to be one, alert an admin.--ForceFire 02:27, 28 May 2014 (UTC)
My appologies – with a perusal of the guidelines pages, I couldn't find any "must be approved by an admin" guideline for moving pages; still I probably should have known better. I figured it could be undone if absolutely necessary, but nobody was doing it and I could save people time and mental energy on something that had bothered me for months now. I will be more orthodox next time I decide to make such a sweeping change.Satosuke (talk) 02:37, 28 May 2014 (UTC)

Two unrelated trainers?

Is it true that two unrelated trainers can see the player at the same time, and it would start a multi battle? I thought all multi battles were specifically programmed into the game as such. And you can face more than 6 Pokemon?

I've never seen this.

Flarn2006 (talk) 22:19, 8 September 2015 (UTC)

I think the "two unrelated Trainers can see the player at the same time" thing mostly happened in RSE or so. At any rate, I think they've pretty much abandoned that sort of situation; I think these days they avoid placing Trainers in positions where that might (theoretically at least) be possible. So in recent games, yes, Multi Battles are generally programmed (i.e., not optional). Tiddlywinks (talk) 22:47, 8 September 2015 (UTC)

Definition

In my opinion, our current definition is way too vague; two Trainers teaming up against one or two opponents would basically involve any battle against Sis and Bro, and I guess those should not be Multi Battles. I've browsed Bulbanews for information about Multi Battles, but couldn't find anything helpful. I found an official definition from pokemon.com, however, that says a Multi Battle is "a variation of Double Battles, where two Pokémon battle at a time for each team, but each Pokémon is controlled by a separate Trainer". So, if there are no counter-arguments/objections, I would like to redifine our definition accordingly (here, at Double Battle, and at Pokémon battle). Notably, this would imply that, opposed to what our page currently says, battles against wild Pokémon and battles triggered when two different Trainers see the player (and only him) at the same time, are actually not Multi Battles (but Double Battles). Nescientist (talk) 14:22, 14 August 2016 (UTC)

In that case, I believe this page should be adjusted to fit the official definition, and any information that needs to be removed should be relocated to the Double Battle article. --SnorlaxMonster 14:30, 14 August 2016 (UTC)
I don't really like moving battles between the player and two separate Trainers to Double Battle. Frankly, the same Pokemon.com page defines Double Battle as "each team [battling] with two Pokémon at a time". Admittedly, this isn't quite as clear as Multi Battle, but the player vs two separate Trainers is still, at best, somewhere between those two strict definitions. And IMO it's better described as a Multi Battle instead of a Double Battle.
As far as Double Battle Trainer classes, I think we could refine the definition of Multi Battle (or make a point of clarifying) to talk about the parties that each side draws from. Double Battle Trainer classes still only have one party, and the player has one party: that's a Double Battle, at least in the storyline of the games. You'll still never be able to wipe out "one opponent" in a Double Battle Trainer class before the other (i.e., while the other person still has more than one Pokemon they can send out).
I suppose I can see, from a sort of high-level view, how, in battling against a pair of siblings, you "should" consider them "separate" Trainers (each controlling Pokemon in the battle separately), but those Double Battle Trainer classes are still fundamentally different than what we currently call Multi Battles... (There may not actually be an entirely pretty way to resolve this. I tend to think that the mechanical differences should "win" out, though; i.e., how you can't just target and exhaust a specific "Trainer" in Double Battle Trainer classes.) Tiddlywinks (talk) 17:47, 14 August 2016 (UTC)
According to their definitions, battles against two separate Trainers are Double Battles, but they are not Multi Battles. (And also not between the lines.) Who are we to define? The parties idea is good for the Trainer classes, but those should be just like two different cases of Double Battles then (one where you can wipe out one Trainer/party, one where you cannot). Also, battles against two wild Pokémon should still be Double Battles, just sayin'. Nescientist (talk) 18:08, 14 August 2016 (UTC)
You may be right. (Multi Battles are a subset of Double Battles.) I don't like the idea that it takes away some granularity from how we could use "Multi Battle", but it appears we already just refer to those two-Trainers-vs-the-player situations as Double Battles (so at least we wouldn't have to go "fixing" all that).
...Is there actually even any place we've called a battle between one Trainer on one side and two on another a Multi Battle, or is that problem just in the definition/intro? Tiddlywinks (talk) 18:22, 14 August 2016 (UTC)
As I said, I searched tha 'news, where we have not. For the games, I tend to believe no, as there are no prominent examples on this page (and I cannot think of any that's just missing here). For the anime, this page seems to imply that Jessie and James initiate Tag Battles all along, or at least at their first appearance, when they see Ash or someone. From a brief look, the episode articles (and EP002 in particular) seem not to say so, unless it really is a proper Tag/Multi Battle. Maybe someone who has the episode at hand could clarify whether Misty says something like "Hey, TR, these Tag Battles are against the rules", or just "Hey, TR, this is against the rules" (and we've just called it a Tag Battle on sight). Nescientist (talk) 18:56, 14 August 2016 (UTC)
I like how Double Battle starts off the anime section with "While Team Rocket had conducted "illegal" Double Battles since the third episode, the first official Double Battle occurred in...", and believe that (or similar) should be used as the wording here. Ash's first Multi Battle should then be in The Bicker the Better, as mentioned on the page.
(Side note: EP108's Japanese title seems to refer to a Double Battle with タッグバトル, but also might just refer to nothing, or to something else.) Nescientist (talk) 12:09, 18 August 2016 (UTC)
I've changed it (but I decided not to actually quote the glossary, as its scope is limited to video games). I also noted that the quotes in this article support the redefinition. And I moved "Team Battle" out of here as well. Nescientist (talk) 13:07, 21 August 2016 (UTC)

Revisiting this topic… Twins Harper and Sarah (Lana's sisters) call their Double Battle (3 trainers total; 2-on-1) a Multi Battle. I think it's safe to say then that the terminology is in fact a Multi Battle for all battles that include multiple trainers on either side, regardless of whether it's 2-on-1 or 2-on-2. The 2-on-1 trainer battles should be returned to this Multi Battle article. Satosuke (talk) 00:24, 13 December 2016 (UTC)

Could you quote them? In the text dump, I can't find it. (But if they said so, that would be a contradiction to what the glossary says.) Nescientist (talk) 18:22, 17 December 2016 (UTC)
Unfortunately, I'm well past that point in the game. Maybe there's a let's play or something that could provide video evidence? I wrote this message last month right after I beat them because I was surprised that they called it that, given the way Multi Battle is defined here. Satosuke (talk) 12:35, 3 January 2017 (UTC)
Then I wanna have a battle! Let's do a moldy battle! It's not a moldy battle! / It's a Multi Battle! We'll have a Multi Battle! [1] --Abcboy (talk) 23:33, 3 January 2017 (UTC)
...that's actually easy to find. I don't recall, but I imagine I searched the Japanese directly!? Because that gives
だったら わたし あれ!まるちばとるが いいでーす! いいね! いいね!まるちばとるに きまりでーす!
where the Japanese term of Multi Battle listed on this page (in katakana) is not included. However, "Multi Battle" is there in hiragina for whatever reason. Nescientist (talk) 16:02, 4 January 2017 (UTC)
