Trivia
- The only time that Swinub's eyes have been seen open was during the battle between Pryce and Erika in Round 163 of Pokémon Special when Pryce ordered his to dodge Erika's Skiploom's attack.
- Swinub is one of the few Pokémon with the same sprite in both Gold and Silver.
- Before the introduction of Mamoswine, Swinub and its evolved form Piloswine were very similar to Mankey and Primeape. Both are the combination of a pig and another animal, had only two evolutionary stages, the final form's English name began with "P", and both are the pigs of their generations followed by Spoink and Grumpig.
- Swinub's shiny form has changed frequently; it was blue in Generation II, gray in Generation III, and green in Generation IV.
- As part of a very obvious April Fool's Day joke in 2009, Bulbanews reported that a Swinub was found in Kelang, an island off Indonesia. It was then taken to Area 51.
Origin
Swinub's size/appearance seem to be based off a mix of a Peruvian guinea pig, and a wild boar piglet. It may also be based on wordplay of the groundhog. Both are similar in characteristics and behavior, and the two words that make up Groundhog can be broken down to describe Swinub. Ground is Swinub's type, and Hog is another word for pig.
Name origin
Swinub's name is a combination of swine and nub, referring to its lump-like nose. Its Japanese name may be a combination of 瓜坊 uribō, a wild boar piglet, and ぶう ぶう bū bū, an onomatopoeia for oinking.
In other languages
- German: Quiekel - From quieken (sounds that pigs make) and Ferkel (piglet).
- French: Marcacrin - From marcassin (wild boar piglet) and crin (horse hair).
- Korean: 꾸꾸리 Kkukkuri
