Sunkern (Japanese: ヒマナッツ Himanuts) is a Grass-type Pokémon.

Biology
Physiology
Sunkern is a seed with a small sprout growing out of its top. It already contains the nutrients it needs to evolve into Sunflora, and needs only to take in water. It is quite weak, and defends itself by thrashing its sprout at enemies.

In Volume 8, Gold encounters a herd of Sunkern escaping from a Skarmory. He captures one of the Sunkern to help defeat the Skarmory. Later, in Volume 14, she evolves into Sunflora.

Trivia
- By statistical average, Sunkern is the weakest Pokémon. However, it does have higher stats in some areas than other Pokémon, and a much greater movepool than others.
- In Generation II, Sunkern's sprite was green colored and different from the sprites in the later generations.
Origin
As its name indicates, it is based on a sunflower seed.
Name origin
Sunkern's name is a combination of sunflower and kernel. Its Japanese name may be a combination of 向日葵 himawari, sunflower, and the English word, nuts.
