Slakoth (Japanese: ナマケロ Namakero) is a Normal-type Pokémon.

It evolves into Vigoroth starting at level 18, which evolves into Slaking starting at level 36.

Biology

Physiology

Slakoth are brown, sloth-like mammalian Pokémon with shaggy coarse fur and brown stripes on its back. It has a scruff of fur on the top of its head and a large, pig-like pink nose. Its eyelids, usually visible in a sleepy expression, its underbelly and the paw pads of its back feet are also pink in coloration. Slakoth has long arms with two sharp claws which it uses in its aboreal lifestyle.

Special abilities

Slakoth's most notable feature is the fact that it is extremely slow. Its heartbeat is unique as it only beats once a minute, and it can sleep for 20+ hours a day. Slakoth also has the unique ability of making those who see it sleepy.

Behavior

Slakoth will spend its whole life in the same tree. However, Slakoth are known for being good swimmers, traveling far during floods to reach a new tree.

Habitat

Slakoth are often found living in forests.

Diet

Major appearances

Norman's Slakoth appeared in Love, Petalburg Style and also in Balance of Power where it battled Ash's Pikachu and Ash's Torkoal. It proved to be a strong battler against Pikachu with its powerful Blizzard attack, but it lost to Torkoal.

In The Garden of Eatin', there were many Slakoth who lived in the Slakoth Banana Garden. A Snorlax was eating all the bananas in the garden and no one was able to stop it until one of the Slakoth in the garden evolved into Vigoroth and defeated it.

Minor appearances

Slakoth first appeared in Max's flashback in Having a Wailord of a Time.

A Slakoth appeared in The Ribbon Cup Caper at the ship's Pokémon Center.

A Slakoth appeared in Camping It Up!.

In the Pokémon Adventures manga, Norman has several Slakoth that he used to try and stop Rayquaza from fleeing from its confines to little effect.

In the Pokémon Ruby-Sapphire manga

In the Pokémon Ruby-Sapphire manga, Norman owns a Slakoth. In There's Someone More Important Than Clefairy?!, it swallows the Balance Badge and Isamu Akai's Clefairy helps to retrieve it from its stomach.

Slakoth lolls around for over twenty hours every day. Because it moves so little, it does not need much food. This Pokémon's sole daily meal consists of just three leaves.

Origin

As its name implies, it appears to have been based on sloths, specifically two-toed sloths.

Name origin

Slakoth's name is a combination of slack, meaning to be lazy, and sloth. It is also a play on the slang phrase "to slack off".

Namakero is based on 樹懶 namakemono, sloth.
