Biology

Physiology

Rhydon is a large, gray dinosaur-like Pokémon. It has a long tail with skinny, black stripes. Rhydon has a cream-colored stomach and a ridged back. Rhydon has two horns on its head, with the one on the nose being a metal drill.

Gender differences

A female's drill-horn is smaller than a male's.

Special abilities

Rhydon's drill-horn is capable of crushing uncut diamonds and it can knock down a building with one strike of its tail. Rhydon's rocky hide is strong enough to withstand direct cannonball fire.

A mechanical Rhydon appeared in Island of the Giant Pokémon as a part of Pokémon Land.

Rhydon's true debut episode was Showdown at Dark City, under the ownership of one of the trainers at Kas Gym.

Rhydon's first major role was in Riddle Me This, being one of Blaine's Pokémon. Blaine used a Rhydon against Ash during the first battle for Ash's Volcano Badge. While normally tough against electric attacks, Rhydon was defeated when Ash's Pikachu struck Rhydon's horn, which acted like a lightning rod.

Rhydon also made a cameo appearance in Numero Uno Articuno as one of Noland's Pokémon.

Brock's dad, Flint, has a Rhydon, but was just mentioned. Flint mostly used his Rhydon for helping him decorate the Pewter Gym's battlefield with rocks from mountaintops.

Nurse Joy had a Rhydon to help look for Kabuto fossils.

Ash's Pikachu and Paul's Chimchar battled against a Rhydon and a Magmar in the Hearthome City Tag-Battle Tournament in Tag! We're It...!.

In the manga

In the Pokémon Special manga

Rhydon debuts in the Red, Green & Blue chapter in its own round, Raging Rhydon, as a Koga's Pokémon that is forced to evolve by its trainer with a mysterious injection, being the first evolution showed in the manga.

Rhydon is later seen as one of Giovanni's Pokémon.

In Volume 9, Green captures a Rhydon outside the Viridian Gym. He uses it to defeat Chuck in Volume 13, as well as Oca in Volume 23. Near the end of the FireRed and LeafGreen saga, Green remarks on a footnote Giovanni included in his handbook: Rhydon possibly possessed a stronger form. This is a reference to Rhydon's new evolution, Rhyperior.

Earlier in the same volume, Gold encounters a wild Rhydon during his race with Whitney. The Rhydon in question was hunting down a Sudowoodo hiding from it, and kidnapped Whitney when she interfered with her Miltank. Gold tells Sudowoodo to stand up for itself and, with assistance from his billiard cue, helps Sudowoodo defeat the Rhydon.

Trivia

  • Ash's Pikachu fought Blaine's Rhydon in the anime and defeated it, despite it being a Ground-type immune to Electric attacks. Since then, that battle has been brought up frequently in comparisons between the games and anime and has spawned the popular Pokémon internet meme, "Pikachu! Aim for the horn!"
  • It is one of the only Rock-type and Ground-type Pokémon that can learn Surf.
  • Rhydon also evolves from the famous glitch Pokémon 'M, if the latter grows up one level upon being captured, because Rhydon's index number is 1 in Generation I.
  • A figure very similar to Rhydon is featured on all of the statues in the entry areas of the gyms.
  • Its Generation I sprites are shown having a full length of spines along its back. This was changed to only having three spikes in Generation II.

Origin

It appears to draw much of its inspiration from a rhinoceros and some aspects of various dinosaurs, such as the triceratops.

Name origin

Rhydon's name may be a reference to rhinoceros. The don may have been intended to mean "lord." However, it is also used as a suffix in various dinosaur names, so it could be an reference to those prehistoric creatures as well. Its Japanese name is a combination of 犀 sai, rhinoceros, and the aforementioned don.

In other languages

  • German: Rizeros
  • French: Rhinoferos - Rhinocéros means rhinoceros. The remainder refers to féroce meaning ferocious.
  • Korean: 코뿌리 Koppuri - Nose Horn
  • Chinese: 鐵甲暴龍
