Trivia
- Relicanth is one of the essential two Pokémon to unlock the caves of the Regis; the other is Wailord.
- Relicanth, along with Zigzagoon, are the two Pokémon left out of the Hoenn Pokérap.
- Relicanth shares its types with four of the five original fossil Pokémon, Kabuto, Kabutops, Omanyte, and Omastar, furthering its link to them as a living fossil. It also shares its type with Corsola.
- Relicanth is the only Water-type to learn Head Smash, as well as the only one to not receive recoil damage from it, due to its ability.
- In fact, its one of three Pokémon that gains STAB and protection from a recoil-damage-giving move. The other two are Clefable with Magic Guard and the Aron family with Rock Head (as of HG/SS).
- Relicanth is one of only three Pokémon with its gender ratio that has been able to be caught from the wild in every generation since its introduction, alongside Munchlax/Snorlax and Combee, and one of only five to ever be catchable in the wild (Eevee and Togepi can be caught in Generation IV).
- Relicanth can be either one of two colors; its regular form is brown, while its shiny form is blue. Its real-life counterpart, the coelacanth, can be either of these colors, as well.
Origin
Relicanth are based on the modern Latimeria Chalumnae, a coelacanth species that was thought to be extinct. They are considered living fossils, because they are virtually unchanged from their prehistoric forms. Like in real life, Relicanth was thought to be extinct 100 million years ago, until it was recently rediscovered in a submarine exploration.
Name Origin
Relicanth's name seems to be a combination of relic, meaning "something old that has survived the passage of time," and coelacanth. Its Japanese name is based on 爺 jī, old man, and coelacanth.
In other languages
- German: Relicanth
- French: Relicanth
- Korean: 시라칸 Coeracan
