Rayquaza (Japanese: レックウザ Rayquaza) is a dual-type Dragon/Flying legendary Pokémon.

It is not known to evolve into or from any other Pokémon.

In Pokémon Emerald, it served to end the conflict between Groudon and Kyogre when Team Magma's leader Maxie and Team Aqua's leader Archie awakened them.

Rayquaza is the version mascot of Pokémon Emerald, appearing on the boxart.

Contents

Biology

Physiology

Rayquaza is a large, green, serpentine creature with rudder-like wings. Yellow rings run across the length of Rayquaza's body and it has an additional yellow ring on top of its head. Rayquaza has two limbs with three-clawed carpals, and two long, flat, horn-like structures on its head, with two smaller horns below them. Its eyes and markings resemble those of both Groudon and Kyogre.

Gender differences

Rayquaza is a genderless species.

Special abilities

Rayquaza is capable of using various elemental attacks. It is also unable to be affected by weather conditions. Since Rayquaza is a "true" Dragon-type Pokémon, it can learn Draco Meteor.

Behavior

Rayquaza constantly flies around the globe in the ozone layer, stopping and descending only to land on the peak of the Sky Pillar to rest. It is extremely territorial.

Habitat

Rayquaza lives high in the ozone layer, but may rest on Sky Pillar or on Sky Tower Summit.

Diet

Main article: Pokémon food

Rayquaza consumes water particles in the atmosphere.

In the anime

Rayquaza in the anime

Rayquaza appears in Destiny Deoxys. This Pokémon, like most other featured legendary Pokémon, proved to be extremely powerful, and it was possibly one of the most powerful Pokémon ever featured in the history of the anime. It fights against Deoxys because it is seen as invading its territory. After a destructive battle over a glacier witnessed by Professor Lund, Yuko and Lund's son Tory, and although it takes a few Psycho Boosts and is critically hit and falls into the freezing ocean, Rayquaza comes back and defeats Deoxys with a Hyper Beam attack. Four years later, Deoxys manages to regenerate, and it goes to find its friend, a fellow Deoxys, Rayquaza senses its presence and goes to LaRousse City to battle Deoxys again. After LaRousse City has been evacuated, Rayquaza manages to break through Deoxys's city-wide barrier after many failed attempts. Then, Rayquaza and Deoxys have a second spectacular battle that destroys some of the city. After Deoxys finds its friend and helps fight off the malfunctioning security bots, Rayquaza realizes that Deoxys is good and stops attacking. It also has a cameo in the opening to the ninth Pokémon movie and is captured by Team Rocket. Its current status is unknown, possibly flying around in the atmosphere (assuming it managed to escape from Team Rocket).

In Malice in Wonderland, a Rayquaza appeared as an illusion created by Mismagius. When Mismagius fuses with Rayquaza, it becomes the same color as the Mismagius.

Rayquaza appeared in outer space in DP142.

In the manga

In Pokémon Adventures

To stop the battle between Kyogre and Groudon, Wally and Norman trained at the Sky Tower and woke up Rayquaza. Five years earlier, Ruby's victory over a Salamence was the reason Norman was banned from the Gym Leaders test as the wounded Salamence accidentally let Rayquaza, who was in captivity at that time, free.

Other appearances

Super Smash Bros. Brawl

Rayquaza appears in the Subspace Emissary mode of Super Smash Bros. Brawl as a boss. After Diddy Kong lands into a mysterious island, Rayquaza lunges out of the water and snatches him, furious from being distrupted. A ship suddenly crash-lands and smashes onto the beach, and out jumps Fox, who deflects Rayquaza's Hyper Beam back at it. Rayquaza collapses into the water, but not for long until it launches back out, engaging in battle between Fox and Diddy. Later, it is fought in the Great Maze level again and can be fought in the Boss Battles after the storyline is beaten.

Trophy Information

A Sky High Pokémon. It normally resides high up in the ozone layer where it flies endlessly, so it is rarely seen. However, when Groudon and Kyogre began to fight, it appeared to calm them down. It has the ability Air Lock, which blocks all weather-condition effects. It has exceedingly strong abilities, and its attack power is especially remarkable.

Game data

NPC appearances

Rayquaza, as it appears in Super Smash Bros. Brawl
  • Pokémon Pinball: Ruby & Sapphire: Rayquaza is the focus of the third and final Bonus Field. It can only be challenged after capturing Groudon or Kyogre and will then join the circuit of bonus fields. Rayquaza will bounce along from left to right, allowing the ball to roll under it if it is up. It will sometimes use Thunder to paralyze the ball if it is not moving fast enough, though it does stay still while it is unleashing the attack. Rayquaza will also sometimes use ExtremeSpeed to create two tornadoes that cause the ball to fly up into the air for several seconds if contact is made. Rayquaza must be hit 15 times in three minutes to win. After beating the round twice, Rayquaza will be captured.
  • Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Rayquaza acts as final boss, living on the Sky Tower. After the credits roll, the player can re-battle Rayquaza to recruit it.
  • Pokémon Ranger: Rayquaza can be captured in a bonus mission after the credits.
  • Pokémon Mystery Dungeon 2: Rayquaza is the guardian of the Sky Melodica.

Trivia

  • Rayquaza is the tallest legendary Pokémon.
  • Rayquaza is the only legendary Pokémon to learn an HM move by level-up in the same generation that it's an HM.
  • Rayquaza is the only legendary Pokémon that can be captured at a higher level than the Elite Four's Pokémon before becoming the champion. This only happens in Pokémon Emerald.
  • Not counting Hidden Power and Natural Gift, Rayquaza can learn damaging attacks of fifteen of the seventeen types, tying with Togekiss for the most, not counting Mew, Smeargle or Arceus.
  • It is said that Rayquaza will come if Groudon and Kyogre are battling, but it didn't appear in the episodes Gaining Groudon and The Scuffle of Legends.
  • In some depictions, the inside of Rayquaza's mouth has a bluish hue. The official Ken Sugimori artwork shows the inside of Rayquaza's mouth with a red hue.
  • Rayquaza is the only trio master that is actually a member of its own trio.
  • Out of the weather trio, it is the only one of the trio with a secondary type.
  • Rayquaza, along with Kyogre, Groudon and Suicune, are the only legendary Pokémon who are the version mascot of a main game, but lack a signature move.
  • Though Rayquaza can be fought by a Pokémon character in Super Smash Bros. Brawl's Subspace Emissary, it is not fought by any Pokémon characters when it first appears.
  • Rayquaza is currently the only Pokémon with its base stat total that does not share the specific stat numbers with another Pokémon: Mewtwo, Lugia, and Ho-Oh all have a 90-90-106-110-130-154 distribution in different orders, while the dragon trio all have 90-100-100-120-120-150.

Origin

Rayquaza is most likely based on the Hebrew legends of Ziz, the unconquerable primal master of the sky. Its counterparts were Behemoth and Leviathan. Rayquaza's appearance also draws inspiration from a Chinese dragon.

Name origin

Rayquaza's name is likely a combination of ray and quasar. Although Rayquaza's Romanized name suggests its Japanese name is meant to be the same as its English name, it could be a combination of 烈 retsu, violent or furious, 空 , sky, and 座 za, from universe.
