Raticate (Japanese: ラッタ Ratta) is a Normal-type Pokémon.

It evolves from Rattata starting at level 20.

Biology

Physiology

Raticate are much larger than Rattata, and are tawny in color. These rodents have very large teeth that grow quickly. They must often gnaw on things to keep their teeth worn down. They also possess webbed feet, which can enable them to swim.

Female Raticate have shorter whiskers.

Special abilities

Raticate have teeth that are strong enough to gnaw through steel. They can swim, and they also have the ability to intimidate their foes (although they cannot have the actual ability).

Behavior

Raticate are a bit more aggresive then Rattata, due to it's bigger size. They need something to gnaw on or their teeth may grow too much. They are willing to take on larger foes if provoked enough.

Habitat

Grassland Pokémon

Raticate naturally live in plains and savannas, however, like Rattata, it can be found almost anywhere there's food.

Diet

Raticate are omnivores in the truest sense, in that they are able to subsist on almost anything edible. However, they are occasionally found with a Chilan Berry.

Ash's Raticate

On the S.S. Anne, Ash traded his Butterfree for a Raticate in Battle Aboard the St. Anne but traded back as the boat was sinking in Pokémon Shipwreck.

Other

Cassidy has a Raticate that for a time served in her and Butch's motto the role that Meowth serves in the motto of Jessie and James.

In Showdown at Dark City, Raticate is one of the Pokémon belonging to one of the Trainers at Kas Gym.

Mollie has a Raticate she used during the appeals round of the Gardenia Town contest in What I Did for Love.

Butch of Team Rocket used a Raticate of his own in The Ole' Berate and Switch.

Minor appearances

A differently colored Raticate appeared in Poké Ball Peril.

In Chikorita's Big Upset, a Trainer used a Raticate to fight against Ash's Chikorita.

In the manga

In Pokémon Adventures, a Rattata was Yellow's first Pokémon. It later evolved into a Raticate.

Trivia

• In Pokémon Red and Blue, Raticate was classified as a rat Pokémon. However, in from Generation III onward, it is classified as a mouse.
• Though its Pokémon Yellow Pokédex entry states that it can swim in rivers to hunt for prey, it cannot learn the move Surf.
• With the exception of Smeargle, Raticate and its pre-evolution are the only Pokémon that learn Flame Wheel, yet aren't Fire-type.
• Raticate is the only Pokémon whose catch rate has changed. It was 90 prior to Generation III, when it changed to 127.

Origin

Its webbed feet, body shape, and overall design are very similar to the coypu, or nutria, a semi-aquatic South American rodent.

Name origin

Raticate's name seems to be a combination of rat and eradicate, meaning to destroy or exterminate. Ratta seems to be derived from rat alone, although it should be noted that Rattata's Japanese name, Koratta is that of Raticate's with ko (child) in front of it.
